exceed RM","content":"

NIO's battery R&D team has now exceeded 800 people, with annual R&D investment expected to exceed RMB 1 billion, according to local media.

NIO is seeking talents for its battery project, poaching former Apple and Panasonic executives, local media 36kr reported today.

Shawn Hao, who worked for Apple's automotive program, and Zack IZAKI, former Panasonic general manager of battery technology in North America, have joined NIO, reporting to vice president Zeng Shuxiang, according to the report.

Hao is a battery industry veteran, having worked at Daimler Chrysler Group before moving into the battery industry with A123, a battery company owned by Wanxiang Group, according to its LinkedIn profile.

Hao joined Apple in 2012 and was initially responsible for battery technology management and supplier quality management for products including phones.

He entered Apple's car project in August 2015 and was a core figure in Apple's car manufacturing engineering, leading a team to build a set of processes, SOPs, quality and other production systems, according to 36kr.

However, Apple's car-building project did not progress smoothly, and Hao ended his 8-year and 7-month career at Apple in October 2020.

Hao worked briefly with CATL chairman Robin Zeng during his early days at Apple, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Izaki, from Panasonic, has extensive experience working in battery engineering and led the engineering of Panasonic batteries in North America, according to the report.

At the Nevada plant jointly built by Panasonic and Tesla, IZAKI was involved in building an engineering team to produce battery packs for the Model 3, the report said.

The Model 3 faced a long period of capacity hell in its early days, and IZAKI was one of the key players along with Elon Musk in pulling Tesla out of that situation, according to the report.

William Li, NIO's founder, chairman and CEO, confirmed in an earnings call on June 9, 2022, that the company would develop its own batteries.

He said at the time that NIO has a battery team of more than 400 people to research areas including battery materials, cells and battery management systems to fully establish battery system development and industrialization capabilities.

Beijing-based Cbea.com, which focuses on the battery industry, reported on February 27 that NIO held a battery partner forum in Hefei, Anhui province, on February 24, where the company announced the start of construction of the first phase of its battery base.

Li said at the time that NIO's battery R&D team has exceeded 800 people, with annual R&D investment expected to exceed RMB 1 billion, according to the report by 36kr today.

The planned investment amount is high, considering that China's third largest battery maker CALB invested less than RMB 300 million in R&D in 2021, and the more aggressive Svolt Energy put RMB 724 million in R&D in 2021, the report noted.

Bringing in senior talents, heavy investment and bold capacity plans show NIO's determination to develop its own batteries, the report said.

On February 24, Reuters reported that NIO plans to build its first battery factory to produce large cylindrical batteries similar to those used by Tesla.

The new plant will have an annual battery capacity of 40 GWh, which could power about 400,000 long-range electric vehicles, the report said.

Moreover, the 36kr report also mentioned that NIO has developed prototypes of large cylindrical cells at its small-scale pilot production line in Anting, Shanghai.

The experimental site, which covers cell and pack trial lines, has seen key equipment manufacturers working there for nearly six months, although it is not yet fully completed, the report said.

NIO's head of battery development, Zeng Shizhe, had assured Li that the company's in-house developed cells would be delivered within the planned time frame, the report said, citing industry sources who had access to the team.

In addition to NIO, there are other new car makers with well-established technical solutions for manufacturing their own batteries, but just haven't decided whether to put them into mass production, the report said.

In Li's view, in-house developed batteries are an important foundation for automakers to get enough gross margin.

He said in an internal speech last November that if NIO wants to achieve a 20 percent gross margin in the mass market, it must produce its own batteries and chips, otherwise, there is no possibility to achieve that goal.

Li listed his calculations:

Batteries currently account for nearly 40 percent of vehicle costs. Assuming that the battery manufacturer's gross profit is 20 percent, if NIO produces its own batteries, then it can get 8 percent more gross profit.

And if NIO produces its own chips, it can get an additional 10 percent gross profit.

Normally, the gross profit of a car is 10 percent, and if you can get 10 percent more you can reach 20 percent. While the extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium recently was a negative event for SoFi’s stock (and EBITDA) outlook, as detailed in "SoFi: Tough Blow", I believe the CEO’s stock buys could help investors regain confidence in the company’s longer term growth prospects!

Insider buys come at a time of increasingly negative attitudes towards FinTechs

Anthony Noto executed three major stock buys for SoFi on Dec. 9, Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 (disclosure). On each occasion the company’s Chief Executive Officer acquired at least 132,600 shares and he paid as little as $4.29 (for the second batch of transactions) for his SoFi shares.

On Dec. 9, Noto purchased 682,500 shares at an average price of $4.36, followed by an acquisition of 132,600 shares bought at $4.29 on Dec. 12. The last transaction was executed on Dec. 13 which was when Noto purchased another 318,965 shares for a weighted-average price of $4.58… which is about the same level SoFi stock closed on Friday.

In total, Anthony Noto spent about $5M for 1.1M shares of SoFi in December which were also the first buys since June 2022. The CEO owned approximately 5.09M shares of SoFi after the last transaction was executed on Dec. 13 which gives the block holding, based off of a current price of $4.64, a total value of $23.6M. In other words: SoFi's Chief Executive Officer has skin in the game which is something that investor would want to see in every company they invest in.

Source: SoFi Disclosure

Investors demand to see profits

The recent extension of the Federal Student Loan Payment has weighed on SoFi’s valuation and pushed shares to new 1-year lows as the extension is set to impact SoFi’s near term EBITDA potential. I estimated that the continued freeze of student loan repayments could reduce SoFi’s EBITDA possibilities by $50M in FY 2023 to just $150M.

The core problem for SoFi, and which is likely the key reason behind SoFi’s down-ward revaluation in FY 2022, is that the company is not profitable, and its growth prospects traded at too lofty a valuation at the beginning of the year. Investors are increasingly demanding FinTechs show a clear path towards profitability.

Although SoFi is still seeing super-strong member acquisition rates -- the FinTech signed on 424 thousand new customers in Q3’22 -- driven chiefly by lending and financial services growth, the market is less willing to assign high valuation factors to FinTech companies that don’t generate significant profits.

Unfortunately, SoFi fits into this category because although revenues are still advancing rapidly, the FinTech is not yet achieving a baseline of profitability. SoFi’s earnings were negative to the tune of $74.2M in Q3’22 while the nine months loss (January through September period) reached $280.4M. SoFi, however, is expected to report its first profit in FY 2024, based on Seeking Alpha-provided estimates.

SoFi’s valuation

SoFi is on track to grow its revenues to $1.52B in revenues in FY 2022 (SoFi's guidance), implying a year over top line growth rate of 50%. Analysts expect $1.53B in revenues, so revenues could be slightly higher than guidance. SoFi is further expected to grow its top line 33% next year to $2.03B, so the FinTech is still projected to see healthy growth in FY 2023.

However, the extended student loan moratorium could hurt SoFi's prospects for valuation growth in the near term, despite shares trading at a P/S ratio well below the 1-year average of 3.3 X.

Data by YCharts

Risks with SoFi

One big risk factor for SoFi is the student loan business and the possibility of a continual freeze of student loan repayments in the middle of next year. At the beginning of the pandemic, student loan repayments were frozen in order to give borrowers financial relief. The Federal Student Loan Payment Moratorium has recently been extended to last through June 2023 which delays the reboot of SoFi’s student loan origination business. Since borrowers have more time to make student loan payments, SoFi is not making any money on student loan refinancings either. The moratorium therefore effectively pushes SoFi's EBITDA growth into the future.

Final thoughts

The insider buys couldn’t come at a better time as the stock is deeply depressed and investors are no longer eager to buy and own FinTech companies. SoFi’s CEO acquired a significant block of shares in the digital personal finance company in December and he did so very close to 1-year lows… which may either be good timing or just a coincidence. I believe SoFi has a lot of potential in the FinTech industry, especially because it keeps growing rapidly, but it may take longer than expected for SoFi to return to the stock highs of 2021!

","source":"seekingalpha_fund","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
SoFi: Aggressive Insider Buys
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nSoFi: Aggressive Insider Buys\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-12-19 20:21 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryMajor insider buys were executed by the firm’s CEO in December.Insider buys are noteworthy as they come at a time of souring investor sentiment regarding FinTechs.SoFi continues to be an ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BK4549":"软银资本持仓","BK4551":"寇图资本持仓","BK4535":"淡马锡持仓","SOFI":"SoFi Technologies Inc.","BK4166":"消费信贷"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4565227-sofi-stock-aggressive-insider-buys","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2292107825","content_text":"SummaryMajor insider buys were executed by the firm’s CEO in December.Insider buys are noteworthy as they come at a time of souring investor sentiment regarding FinTechs.SoFi continues to be an attractive growth play in the digital personal finance space, but prospects for near-term valuation growth are likely limited.ViorikaShares of personal finance company SoFi (NASDAQ:SOFI) soared last week after mandatory disclosures showed that the firm’s Chief Executive Officer, Anthony Noto, executed three blocks of stock buys totaling $5M. (NYSE:PLTR)reported 3Q22revenue of $478 million (+22% YoY), which beat $474 million consensus, while adjusted operating margin of 17% also compared favorably against 11.7% consensus. In Q3, total contract value increased to $1.3 billion and customer count grew 66% YoY. Despite the slower 23% YoY growth in U.S. government revenue, U.S. commercial revenue grew 53% YoY, while the commercial client base increased 124% YoY to 132 customers. Adjusted free cash flow (AFCF) was $37 million in Q3 for an adjusted FCF margin of 7.7%. Management was proud to highlight that this was the 8th consecutive quarter of positive AFCF.

ConsensusGuru

For Q4, management expects revenue of $504 million at the midpoint (+16% YoY) vs. $506 million consensus. This includes a $5 million FX impact, which seems rather minimal compared to most tech companies that derive a substantial portion of revenues from overseas. Palantir's revenue is largely U.S.-based, hence it is relatively safe from FX headwinds. Q4 adj. operating income is expected to be $79 million at the midpoint, implying an adj. EBIT margin of 15.7% vs. 12.4% consensus.

While most companies are either reducing outlooks or not providing forward guidance, Palantir actually reiterated its full year 2022 revenue guidance of $1.9 billion, including a small $6 million impact from FX headwinds. On the surface, nothing that Palantir said was out of the ordinary, as Q3 results and Q4 outlook were mostly in-line with expectations.

But why doesn't the market care?

Shares of Palantir are down 11% despite the company just delivered everything the Street asked for. Why is this happening? The first issue is that investors are uncertain as to how to value the stock given top-line growth is expected to moderate to 16% in Q4 from 22%/26%/31% in Q3/Q2/Q1. Remember that one year ago, Palantir was a company growing its quarterly revenue at well over 40% YoY in an environment where GAAP (growth at any price) was the dominant theme for the investment community. This is no longer the case as the Fed has said many times that rates will stay high until inflation drops to the 2% policy target.

The recent post-earnings price action (-18%) from another high flyer like Cloudflare, Inc. (NET) has also introduced a spillover effect on many fast-growing yet unprofitable names like Palantir. When earnings are non-existent, there's really no way of judging the potential price levels at which markets will find valuation support when top-line growth slows down.

This is where Palantir's history of zero (or negative) profitability becomes a major problem, as the company has struggled to make money over the past 19 years. While management talked about terms like adjusted operating margin and free cash flow, these figures appear positive only because management wants analysts to add back a list of financial shenanigans. Stock-based compensation (SBC) is the magic number that could make the company "profitable."

Company data

In the first 9 months of 2022, Palantir's reported an actual loss from operations of $143 million (-10% EBIT margin) and net loss of over $400 million (-29% net margin). However, if we simply add back the $450 million in stock-based compensation plus the associated payroll taxes, Palantir is suddenly profitable, with an adjusted operating income of $306 million (22% adj. EBIT margin). Evidently, markets are done with this trick, and it doesn't require much for investors to understand that SBC is arguably the best way to dilute their financial interest in any business.

What to do with the stock?

Avoid Palantir at all costs. I maintain my Sell rating following my last article published in September. Management was proud to highlight that this was the 8th consecutive quarter of positive AFCF.ConsensusGuruFor Q4, management expects revenue of $504 million at the midpoint (+16% YoY) vs. But why doesn't the market care?Shares of Palantir are down 11% despite the company just delivered everything the Street asked for. Stock-based compensation (SBC) is the magic number that could make the company \"profitable.\"Company dataIn the first 9 months of 2022, Palantir's reported an actual loss from operations of $143 million (-10% EBIT margin) and net loss of over $400 million (-29% net margin). What to do with the stock?Avoid Palantir at all costs. I maintain my Sell rating following my last article published in September. This is a structurally unprofitable business that will do investors more harm than good despite how massive the TAM (total addressable market) may be. While the migration of their data into the cloud in recent years helped them to digitize their processes and scale their operations, the changing environment now forces them to look for solutions that would make sure that their businesses could weather any upcoming challenges with relative ease.

That's where Palantir Technologies Inc.'s (NYSE: PLTR) Apollo comes into play. As a standalone product, Apollo is able to autonomously deploy custom-made software and security updates to various environments of different organizations in real time, which ensures the safety and continuous operation of critical systems of Palantir's clients. Thanks to this, Apollo could be considered a one-of-a-kind solution for big organizations that rely on the continuous deployment of software and security updates to run their global operations in challenging environments. As a result, there's a real possibility that as the total addressable market for such a solution increases with each year, Palantir would be able to continue to expand its business even in the current turbulent environment, which could lead to the appreciation of its shares in the long run.

The Power of Apollo

A lot of the discussions about Palantir focus on highlighting the advantages of the company's two major platforms Gotham and Foundry, which could are considered to be operating systems for governmental organizations and commercial enterprises that are used for data integration and big data analytics. While both of those platforms have been major drivers of growth for Palantir's business in recent years, and I have extensively covered them in my other articles in the last few months, Apollo has been considered a silent third platform of the company that wasn't discussed as much as the others. However, there's a possibility that this could change soon, as Apollo has all the chances to scale Palantir's business in the foreseeable future and help it to accelerate the onboarding of new clients.

To understand what Apollo really is it's better to take a look at how Palantir describes itself. In its latest 10-Qreport, Palantir stated the following:

Apollo is a cloud-agnostic, single control layer that coordinates ongoing delivery of new features, security updates, and platform configurations, helping to ensure the continuous operation of critical systems.

At first, Palantir built Apollo for in-house use to help the company to speed up the process of integrating Gotham and Foundry into the organizations of its new clients. As an automated platform for continuous deployment, Apollo evolved to become a standalone product in 2021 and is now able to be used within third-party platforms to provide updates for custom-built software solutions in virtually any environment. As a result, Apollo gives Palantir the ability to substantially increase the number of new clients, as it could successfully deploy custom-built updates with relative ease.

That's why in his letter to shareholders, Palantir's CEO Alex Karp has been stressing the importance of Apollo for Palantir and how it could be as important for the business as Gotham and Foundry are by saying the following:

We believe that the demand from large enterprises for a software delivery and maintenance solution that is platform agnostic will be as significant as the demand for the underlying data integration and analytical capabilities themselves.

One of the biggest advantages of Apollo is that it replaces the need for its potential customers to build in-house continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) capabilities. Instead, the potential customers are able to focus on developing the software itself and then outsource the deployment of that software to Palantir without increasing their headcount whatsoever.

What's also important to mention is that Palantir recently received an impact level 6 accreditation from the Department of Defense, which makes it possible for government contractors to use the company's solutions to store, share and interact with data of the highest level of authorization. Therefore, Palantir is only one of the few companies along with Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) and Amazon.com (AMZN) with the highest clearance level in the world, which gives its platforms, and Apollo in particular advantage against other platforms offered by different businesses in the DevOps and CI/CD space.

What we also know is that Apollo has already been able to deploy software and security updates in over 500 independently-released microservices across over 300 different environments. At the same time, there's also a possibility that those numbers are gradually increasing with each quarter, as Palantir continues to aggressively sign new customers and at the end of Q2 its customer count increased to 304, up from 169 a year ago.

What's Next?

Considering the capabilities of Apollo, the two major questions that investors could have in mind are how much revenue the platform is generating and what is its total addressable market. The first question is hard to answer because Palantir doesn't disclose the exact amount of revenue that each platform generates. However, we do know that aggressive growth in new customers occurred after Apollo has been released as a standalone product in 2021. At the same time, the fact that Palantir's CEO Alex Karp is saying that the demand for a software delivery and maintenance solution will be the same as the demand for a data integration platform could lead us to the conclusion that Apollo is going to have a greater impact on the business in the future.

As for the second question, we do know that Apollo is mostly a deployment solution for organizations that conduct their operations in the cloud. However, Apollo's main advantage is that in essence, it's a cloud-agnostic solution, and as a result, it can deploy software and security updates to entirely different environments that operate within multiple cloud platforms with relative ease. That's why Apollo could be considered a supercloud solution. Wikibondescribessuperclouds as follows:

Supercloud describes an architecture that taps the underlying services & primitives of hyperscale and other clouds to deliver additional value above and beyond what's available from a single public cloud provider. A supercloud delivers capabilities through software, consumed as services, and must span multiple cloud platforms, inclusive of on-prem clouds and edge installations.

Considering that with each year the number of cloud vendors and cloud platforms increases and the overall cloud computing market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.43% by the end of the decade and be worth $1.6 trillion, it's safe to assume that the demand for a supercloud solution such as Apollo is also going to increase. As a result, there's a high possibility that Alex Karp would be right in his belief that there could be a significant demand for a solution such as Apollo in the future.

That's why I decided to slightly update my DCF model. In September, my DCF model showed that Palantir's fair value is $10.03 per share, which represents an upside of ~25% from the current levels. That model assumed that Palantir's top line would grow at 23.5% in FY22 and at 25% Y/Y in the following years, below the management's initial forecast of annual growth of 30% Y/Y through 2025. That model could be considered as a base-case scenario under which Palantir is still undervalued.

However, if Apollo manages to help Palantir aggressively scale its business in the future, then it makes sense to create an additional optimistic scenario under which the company grows at a greater rate. That's why in this new model the revenue is forecasted to increase by 23.5% Y/Y, while in the following years the top-line growth increases to the management's initial forecasts of an annual growth rate of 30%. All the other metrics remain the same as in the previous model where WACC is 8%, while the terminal growth rate is 3%.

Palantir's DCF Model (Historical Data: Seeking Alpha, Assumptions: Author)

According to this more optimistic model, Palantir's enterprise value appears to be $22.6 billion, while its implied share price is $12.08 per share, which represents an upside of ~50% from the current market price and creates a buying opportunity for long-term investors.

Palantir's DCF Model (Historical Data: Seeking Alpha, Assumptions: Author)

Risks

One of the downsides of Palantir is its high level of secrecy. Due to working with governmental agencies, the company can't disclose various contracts and relationships that it has with its clients. As a result, we don't know exactly how much revenue the company generates from each client. However, what's worse is that the company has also been actively investing in various SPACs last year. As a large portion of SPACs depreciated since the beginning of this year due to the worsening macroeconomic environment, there's a risk that Palantir could generate greater than expected losses from them in the foreseeable future. Even though the company closed its SPAC program earlier this year, the lack of transparency prevents investors from knowing how much the investments that were made in 2021 generated returns or lost capital, which could lead to weaker performance of the overall business than previously expected.

The other problem of Palantir is that as a growth stock, there's a real possibility that it could continue to depreciate or trade at distressed levels for as long as the Federal Reserve continues to increase interest rates to tame the rising inflation. As a result, while Palantir is undervalued at the current levels, it could remain to be undervalued for a while due to things that are outside of its control.

The Bottom Line

We've entered a new period of global decoupling in which supply chains are being reorganized at the same time as the geopolitical uncertainties create new macroeconomic risks to organizations and institutions. As a result, in times like these, it becomes crucial to have a solution such as Apollo, which ensures that corporations and enterprises are able to deploy all the necessary software and security updates that make it possible for them to continue to operate in the current challenging environment with relative ease. That's why Palantir's CEO Alex Karp might be correct when he states that the demand for a solution such as Apollo could be as significant as the demand for other data analytics solutions that the company offers.

At the same time, considering that Palantir trades below its fair value both in the optimistic and in the base-case scenarios, long-term investors might use this as an opportunity to increase their exposure to the company at the current levels, as there's an indication that Apollo could greatly improve the business's performance in the foreseeable future.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Therefore, Palantir is only one of the few companies along with Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) and Amazon.com (AMZN) with the highest clearance level in the world, which gives its platforms, and Apollo in particular advantage against other platforms offered by different businesses in the DevOps and CI/CD space. What's Next?Considering the capabilities of Apollo, the two major questions that investors could have in mind are how much revenue the platform is generating and what is its total addressable market. Wikibondescribessuperclouds as follows:Supercloud describes an architecture that taps the underlying services & primitives of hyperscale and other clouds to deliver additional value above and beyond what's available from a single public cloud provider. A supercloud delivers capabilities through software, consumed as services, and must span multiple cloud platforms, inclusive of on-prem clouds and edge installations.Considering that with each year the number of cloud vendors and cloud platforms increases and the overall cloud computing market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.43% by the end of the decade and be worth $1.6 trillion, it's safe to assume that the demand for a supercloud solution such as Apollo is also going to increase. All the other metrics remain the same as in the previous model where WACC is 8%, while the terminal growth rate is 3%.Palantir's DCF Model (Historical Data: Seeking Alpha, Assumptions: Author)According to this more optimistic model, Palantir's enterprise value appears to be $22.6 billion, while its implied share price is $12.08 per share, which represents an upside of ~50% from the current market price and creates a buying opportunity for long-term investors.Palantir's DCF Model (Historical Data: Seeking Alpha, Assumptions: Author)RisksOne of the downsides of Palantir is its high level of secrecy. The Bottom LineWe've entered a new period of global decoupling in which supply chains are being reorganized at the same time as the geopolitical uncertainties create new macroeconomic risks to organizations and institutions. At the same time, considering that Palantir trades below its fair value both in the optimistic and in the base-case scenarios, long-term investors might use this as an opportunity to increase their exposure to the company at the current levels, as there's an indication that Apollo could greatly improve the business's performance in the foreseeable future.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":118,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9917426403,"gmtCreate":1665569998002,"gmtModify":1676537629092,"author":{"id":"3565146699964497","authorId":"3565146699964497","name":"ycwoo","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2f48b4bbc66c0bf509f7199142c1a2f2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1},"themes":[],"htmlText":"K","listText":"K","text":"K","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9917426403","repostId":"1111323512","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1111323512","pubTimestamp":1665571830,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1111323512?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2022-10-12 18:50","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"U.S. Stock Futures Rise Ahead of Key Inflation Data, Fed Minutes","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1111323512","media":"Wall Street Journal","summary":"U.S. stocks were on track for a modest recovery, after turmoil in U.K. government-bond markets helpe","content":"

U.S. stocks were on track for a modest recovery, after turmoil in U.K. government-bond markets helped drag the Nasdaq Composite into a bear market.

S&P 500 futures were up 0.8% Wednesday, while contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.6%.
