studios</p><p>Last February, I wrote a bullish article on Marathon Digital (NASDAQ:MARA) as a proxy play to Bitcoin price movement ahead of the upcoming halving event and presidential election which have resulted in major runs in both Bitcoin and MARA stock. Since my last article, Marathon is down 33% while Bitcoin is up 30%, even reaching new all-time highs during that period. That said, I remain bullish on Marathon thanks to its recent moves to diversify its revenue streams by selling its Bitcoin mining technology.</p><p>In my opinion, this positions the company to benefit from the upcoming Bitcoin halving event as miners look to mine the cryptocurrency more efficiently as a result of the expected increase in mining difficulty. In addition, as Bitcoin’s price increases, Marathon could generate significant recurring revenues thanks to a 2% developer fee it charges users for mining the cryptocurrency using its technology. Given that Marathon’s technology could be attractive to all Bitcoin miners due to their benefits, I’m reiterating my buy rating with a price target of $31.03 per share, implying 73% upside from current levels.</p><h2 id=\"id_2583607952\">Revenue Diversification Could Lead to Industry Domination</h2><p>In late March, Marathon unveiled MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100, an advanced firmware and control board that enhances Bitcoin mining rigs’ performance and efficiency. MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 are compatible with most stock control boards and feature hashrate optimization, auto-tuning, overclocking, underclocking, and intelligent thermal protection.</p><p>Marathon has been working on developing and testing the firmware and control board for the past year and showed positive results while rolling out this technology across its fleet of mining rigs. As a result, it is now offering MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 to the broader Bitcoin mining community. In my opinion, these features could become popular among Bitcoin miners since mining difficulty is expected to increase after the upcoming Bitcoin halving event this month.</p><p>Marathon has 2 pricing tiers for its technology. The first tier is for $125 per unit including a lifetime license and the second tier is for $99 per unit in addition to a 2% developer fee. This means that Marathon will receive 2% of all Bitcoin mined using each miner equipped with its technology, providing an opportunity to generate recurring revenue for the lifetime of the miner. I believe the lifetime license tier is more suited for more established miners with strong liquidity while the tier with the 2% developer fee is more suited for small miners with limited cash.</p><p>Marathon also unveiled a new two-phase immersion cooling system, MARA 2PIC700, that enables 2 to 4 times the power density and can reduce the space requirements for data centers by up to 75%. It can operate in temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius which means that it can operate in harsh climates that usually lead miners to stop operating. Marathon claims that using this system could allow miners to be overclocked by 60 to 100% and can reduce cooling costs by up to 60%.</p><p>As mining costs become more critical for miners after the halving event, I expect these features to attract several suitors since these cost savings will offset the higher costs associated with the expected increase in mining difficulty. At the same time, miners using this system could operate normally during times of extremely low or high temperatures.</p><p>As is, low temperatures can lead to a decrease in electrical conductivity of the silicon used in the ASIC chips which can make it difficult for the miner to reach the temperature at which it operates most efficiently. Whereas during hot weather mining rigs can suffer from thermal throttling without proper cooling which automatically reduces the rigs’ performance to cool down. Given the potential of MARAFW, MARA UCB 2100, and MARA 2PIC700, I believe Marathon is well positioned to benefit greatly from the growth of the Bitcoin mining industry since its technology could be included in most data centers in the future.</p><h2 id=\"id_32173843\">Revenue Forecast &amp; Price Target</h2><p>In my previous article, I forecasted Bitcoin to reach $100 thousand post halving based on its performance following the past 4 halving events and Marathon to produce 10,679 Bitcoin this year based on its expected hashrate. This means that 42 thousand units sold will be equipped to S19 Pro miners and 18 thousand will be equipped to T21 miners.</p><p>According to Minerstat, an S19 Pro miner generates $11.42 worth of Bitcoin per day which translates to $4168 per year. Meanwhile, a T21 miner generates $19.72 worth of Bitcoin per day which translates to $7198 per year. Accordingly, the 42 thousand S19 Pro miners could generate up to $175 million per year and the 18 thousand T21 miners could generate up to $129.5 million per year. That said, Marathon has historically traded at a premium versus its peers mainly due to its Bitcoin stash.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c9ee9ad1bbd7397822a50950d26b1b88\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"456\"/></p><p>Data by YCharts</p><p>According to each company’s March Bitcoin production update, Marathon holds 17,381 Bitcoin while each of Riot and CleanSpark holds 8,490 and 5,021 Bitcoin, respectively, meaning that Marathon holds more Bitcoin than its peers combined. The latter, in my opinion, represents more risk in the short term after the company filed for a new $1.5 billion shelf offering. At the current valuation, Marathon can issue more than 83.4 million new shares under the ATM program which would represent a 31.1% increase in its outstanding shares.</p><h2 id=\"id_3726706886\">Conclusion</h2><p>Following Marathon’s recent strategy to sell its technology to other Bitcoin miners, I remain bullish on its stock in the long-term. As is, the company’s technology has the potential to increase mining efficiency and save costs which will be critical for Bitcoin mining post halving since difficulty is expected to increase. Given that the company’s technology could become an integral part of all data centers in the future, I believe Marathon should trade at a premium compared to its peers, namely Riot and CleanSpark. Since my last article, Marathon is down 33% while Bitcoin is up 30%, even reaching new all-time highs during that period. That said, I remain bullish on Marathon thanks to its recent moves to diversify its revenue streams by selling its Bitcoin mining technology.In my opinion, this positions the company to benefit from the upcoming Bitcoin halving event as miners look to mine the cryptocurrency more efficiently as a result of the expected increase in mining difficulty. In addition, as Bitcoin’s price increases, Marathon could generate significant recurring revenues thanks to a 2% developer fee it charges users for mining the cryptocurrency using its technology. Given that Marathon’s technology could be attractive to all Bitcoin miners due to their benefits, I’m reiterating my buy rating with a price target of $31.03 per share, implying 73% upside from current levels.Revenue Diversification Could Lead to Industry DominationIn late March, Marathon unveiled MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100, an advanced firmware and control board that enhances Bitcoin mining rigs’ performance and efficiency. MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 are compatible with most stock control boards and feature hashrate optimization, auto-tuning, overclocking, underclocking, and intelligent thermal protection.Marathon has been working on developing and testing the firmware and control board for the past year and showed positive results while rolling out this technology across its fleet of mining rigs. As a result, it is now offering MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 to the broader Bitcoin mining community. In my opinion, these features could become popular among Bitcoin miners since mining difficulty is expected to increase after the upcoming Bitcoin halving event this month.Marathon has 2 pricing tiers for its technology. The first tier is for $125 per unit including a lifetime license and the second tier is for $99 per unit in addition to a 2% developer fee. This means that Marathon will receive 2% of all Bitcoin mined using each miner equipped with its technology, providing an opportunity to generate recurring revenue for the lifetime of the miner. I believe the lifetime license tier is more suited for more established miners with strong liquidity while the tier with the 2% developer fee is more suited for small miners with limited cash.Marathon also unveiled a new two-phase immersion cooling system, MARA 2PIC700, that enables 2 to 4 times the power density and can reduce the space requirements for data centers by up to 75%. It can operate in temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius which means that it can operate in harsh climates that usually lead miners to stop operating. Marathon claims that using this system could allow miners to be overclocked by 60 to 100% and can reduce cooling costs by up to 60%.As mining costs become more critical for miners after the halving event, I expect these features to attract several suitors since these cost savings will offset the higher costs associated with the expected increase in mining difficulty. At the same time, miners using this system could operate normally during times of extremely low or high temperatures.As is, low temperatures can lead to a decrease in electrical conductivity of the silicon used in the ASIC chips which can make it difficult for the miner to reach the temperature at which it operates most efficiently. Whereas during hot weather mining rigs can suffer from thermal throttling without proper cooling which automatically reduces the rigs’ performance to cool down. But investing experts say there are more costs to consider before jumping on the robo-investing train.</p>\n<p>“Much like in Vegas, the house generally wins,” said Vance Barse, a San Diego, California-based financial advisor who runs a company called Your Dedicated Fiduciary.</p>\n<p>Although the 35 basis-point price tag is a “loss leader” to Goldman Sachs, he said companies typically make such offers in order to attract clients to cross-sell them banking products.</p>\n<p>“People forget that banks are ultimately in the business of making money,” he said.</p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs declined to comment.</p>\n<p>The company is among other major financial-services firms offering digital advisers, including Vanguard, Fidelity and Schwab SCHW, +1.03% and startups such as Betterment and Wealthfront.</p>\n<p>Fees for robo advisers can start at around 0.25%, and increase to 1% and above for traditional brokers. A survey of nearly 1,000 financial planners by Inside Information, a trade publication, found that the bigger the portfolio, the lower the percentage clients paid in fees.</p>\n<p>The median annual charge hovered at around 1% for portfolios of $1 million or less, and 0.5% for portfolios worth $5 million to $10 million.</p>\n<p>Robo advisers like those on offer from Goldman Sachs and Betterment differ from robo platforms like Robinhood. The former suggest portfolios focused on exchange-traded funds, while Robinhood allows users to invest in individual ETFs, stocks, options and even cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p><b>Robo investing as a self-driving car</b></p>\n<p>Consumers have turned to robo-investing at unprecedented levels during the pandemic.</p>\n<p>The rate of new accounts opened jumped between 50% and 300% during the first quarter of 2020 compared to the fourth quarter of last year, according to a May report published by research and advisory firm Aite Group.</p>\n<p>So what is rob-investing? Think of it like a self-driving car.</p>\n<p>You put in your destination, buckle up in the backseat and your driver (robo adviser) will get there. You, the passenger, can’t easily slam the breaks if you fear your driver is leading you in the wrong direction. Nor can you put your foot on the gas pedal if you’re in a rush and want to get to your destination faster.</p>\n<p>Robo-investing platforms use advanced-trading algorithm software to design investment portfolios based on factors such as an individual’s appetite for risk-taking and desired short-term and long-term returns.</p>\n<p>There are over 200 platforms that provide these services charging typically no more than a 0.5% annual advisory fee, compared to the 1% annual fee human investment advisors charge.</p>\n<p>And rather than investing entirely on your own, which can become a second job and lead to emotional investment decisions, robo advisers handle buying and selling assets.</p>\n<p>Cynthia Loh, Schwab vice president of Digital Advice and Innovation, disagrees, and argues that robo investing doesn’t mean giving technology control of your money. Schwab, she said, has a team of investment experts who oversee investment strategy and keep watch during periods of market volatility, although some services have more input from humans than others.</p>\n<p>As she recently wrote on MarketWatch: “One common misconception about automated investing is that choosing a robo adviser essentially means handing control of your money over to robots. The truth is that robo solutions have a combination of automated and human components running things behind the scenes.”</p>\n<p><b>Robos appeal to inexperienced investors</b></p>\n<p>Robo investing tends to appeal to inexperienced investors or ones who don’t have the time or energy to manage their own portfolios. These investors can take comfort in the “set it and forget it approach to investing and overtime let the markets do their thing,” Barse said.</p>\n<p>That makes it much easier to stomach market volatility knowing that you don’t necessarily have to make spur-of-the-moment decisions to buy or sell assets, said Tiffany Lam-Balfour, an investing and retirement specialist at NerdWallet.</p>\n<p>“When you’re investing, you don’t want to keep looking at the market and going ‘Oh I need to get out of this,’” she said. “You want to leave it to the professionals to get you through it because they know what your time horizon is, and they’ll adjust your portfolio automatically for you.”</p>\n<p>That said, “you can’t just expect your investments will only go up. Even if you had the world’s best human financial adviser you can’t expect that.”</p>\n<p>Others disagree, and say robo advisers appeal to older investors. “Planning for and paying yourself in retirement is complex. There are many options out there to help investors through it, and robo investing is one of them,” Loh said.</p>\n<p>“Many thoughtful, long-term investors have discovered that they want a more modern, streamlined, and inexpensive way to invest, and robo investing fits the bill. They are happy to let technology handle the mundane activities that are harder and more time-consuming for investors to do themselves,” she added.</p>\n<p><b>There is often no door to knock on</b></p>\n<p>Your robo adviser only knows what you tell it. The simplistic questionnaire you’re required to fill out will on most robo-investing platforms will collect information on your annual income, desired age to retire and the level of risk you’re willing to take on.</p>\n<p>It won’t however know if you just had a child and would like to begin saving for their education down the road or if you recently lost your job.</p>\n<p>“The question then becomes to whom does that person go to for advice and does that platform offer that and if so, to what level of complexity?” said Barse.</p>\n<p>Not all platforms give individualized investment advice and the hybrid models that do offer advice from a human tend to charge higher annual fees.</p>\n<p>Additionally, a robo adviser won’t necessarily “manage your money with tax efficiency at front of mind,” said Roger Ma, a certified financial planner at Lifelaidout, a New York City-based financial advisory group.</p>\n<p>For instance, one common way investors offset the taxes they pay on long-term investments is by selling assets that have accrued losses. Traditional advisers often specialize in constructing portfolios that lead to the most tax-efficient outcomes, said Ma, who is the author of “Work Your Money, Not Your Life”.</p>\n<p>But with robo investing, the trades that are made for you are the same ones that are being made for a slew of other investors who may fall under a different tax-bracket than you.</p>\n<p>On top of that, while robo investing may feel like a simplistic way to get into investing, especially for beginners it can “overcomplicate investing,” Ma said.</p>\n<p>“If you are just looking to dip your toe in and you want to feel like you’re invested in a diversified portfolio, I wouldn’t say definitely don’t do a robo adviser,” he said.</p>\n<p>Don’t rule out investing through a target-date fund that selects a single fund to invest in and adjusts the position over time based on their investment goals, he added.</p>\n<p>But not everyone can tell the difference between robo advice and advice from a human being. In 2015, MarketWatch asked four prominent robo advisers and four of the traditional, flesh-and-blood variety to construct portfolios for a hypothetical 35-year-old investor with $40,000 to invest.</p>\n<p>The results were, perhaps, surprising for critics of robo advisers. And in a classic Wall Street reaction, the market “sold the news” after long having “bought the rumor.”</p>\n<p>CCIV was up 500% from when it went public as a blank-check company, and today the stock market has wiped half of what its market value was perceived to be Monday at noon. This is a stock that I had warned about earlier this month as one of the many “Random Number Generators” (RNGs) that should be avoided. People and institutions who had for weeks been buying CCIV at $40, $50, $60 or even $70 per share have suddenly seen a huge wipeout of value.</p>\n<p>They’re now, maybe, looking around at their other RNG SPACs and wondering if they should actually look at the valuations.</p>\n<p>Reviewing this week’s ugly stock-market action in a broader context, you might note that Tesla Inc.&nbsp;at $900 — after the company reported a not-so-great quarter that included some questions about gross margin expansion — is looking like it could have been a top-maker itself.</p>\n<p>Many questionable EV stocks continued to rally for a week or two before getting their comeuppance this week. At least for a day or two. It will be interesting to look back in a month to see what the non-TSLA EV stocks do from here. I expect most to move much lower even than today’s quotes, which are much lower than last week’s quotes.</p>\n<p><b>Piling into ARK</b></p>\n<p>These days everybody wants to be Cathie Wood from ARK Invest. She was an early bull on Tesla and bitcoinBTCUSD,6.03%and some of the the other themes that long-time followers of mine and I got into even earlier than she did. Her actively managed ETF, ARK Innovation ETF&nbsp;being the most famous, has performed very well, and her commentary has been spot on for a couple years now.</p>\n<p>But I have bad news. Even as I am a fan of Cathie’s and wish her and her investors all the best, I can’t help but think of the story of George Gilder, with whom I’ve become friends in the decades since&nbsp;I wrote this in 2001 for TheStreet.com.&nbsp;(I just realized this article was published just two weeks after 9/11.):</p>\n<p><i>“Investors need to heed a few rules when evaluating companies in their portfolio: Cash is king, as cash flow becomes increasingly difficult to judge on an ongoing basis. As such, a simple glance at a company’s balance sheet can tell you a lot about whether it’s worthy of investment. Now that the huge daily run-ups of telco stocks are gone forever, the potential rewards of any business with questionable viability aren’t worth the risk of your capital. Look for real revenue on the books. As tech guru George Gilder and his followers have learned (at least, I hope they have by now), great technology doesn’t translate into a great investment. Companies need sales channels, and they need products for which there are immediate uses. You might be surprised that I didn’t mention profitability in that list. Profitability is naturally important, but even companies like Cisco probably won’t be profitable this quarter and perhaps for several more, as they’ll have to continue aligning capacity, employees and inventory with demand.</i></p>\n<p><i>Let me repeat the caveat here: You’ll never see the type of returns, at least in telecom and telecom-tech stocks, that we saw almost daily in the late 1990s. I think the same can be said of EV stocks and many other of the favorites that Cathie Wood and her crowd of blind followers are these days plowing into as they put their money to work regardless of valuations.</p>\n<p>Here’s what George had to say&nbsp;in 2002:</p>\n<p><i>“In retrospect, it’s obvious that I should’ve subtly said, ‘Hey, things have gotten out of hand at JDS Uniphase, and it’s not worth what you’d have to pay for it,’” he says. And in a classic Wall Street reaction, the market “sold the news” after long having “bought the rumor.”\nCCIV was up 500% from when it went public as a blank-check company, and today the stock market has wiped half of what its market value was perceived to be Monday at noon. This is a stock that I had warned about earlier this month as one of the many “Random Number Generators” (RNGs) that should be avoided. People and institutions who had for weeks been buying CCIV at $40, $50, $60 or even $70 per share have suddenly seen a huge wipeout of value.\nThey’re now, maybe, looking around at their other RNG SPACs and wondering if they should actually look at the valuations.\nReviewing this week’s ugly stock-market action in a broader context, you might note that Tesla Inc. at $900 — after the company reported a not-so-great quarter that included some questions about gross margin expansion — is looking like it could have been a top-maker itself.\nMany questionable EV stocks continued to rally for a week or two before getting their comeuppance this week. At least for a day or two. It will be interesting to look back in a month to see what the non-TSLA EV stocks do from here. I expect most to move much lower even than today’s quotes, which are much lower than last week’s quotes.\nPiling into ARK\nThese days everybody wants to be Cathie Wood from ARK Invest. She was an early bull on Tesla and bitcoinBTCUSD,6.03%and some of the the other themes that long-time followers of mine and I got into even earlier than she did. Her actively managed ETF, ARK Innovation ETF being the most famous, has performed very well, and her commentary has been spot on for a couple years now.\nBut I have bad news. Since my last article, Marathon is down 33% while Bitcoin is up 30%, even reaching new all-time highs during that period. That said, I remain bullish on Marathon thanks to its recent moves to diversify its revenue streams by selling its Bitcoin mining technology.</p><p>In my opinion, this positions the company to benefit from the upcoming Bitcoin halving event as miners look to mine the cryptocurrency more efficiently as a result of the expected increase in mining difficulty. In addition, as Bitcoin’s price increases, Marathon could generate significant recurring revenues thanks to a 2% developer fee it charges users for mining the cryptocurrency using its technology. Given that Marathon’s technology could be attractive to all Bitcoin miners due to their benefits, I’m reiterating my buy rating with a price target of $31.03 per share, implying 73% upside from current levels.</p><h2 id=\"id_2583607952\">Revenue Diversification Could Lead to Industry Domination</h2><p>In late March, Marathon unveiled MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100, an advanced firmware and control board that enhances Bitcoin mining rigs’ performance and efficiency. MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 are compatible with most stock control boards and feature hashrate optimization, auto-tuning, overclocking, underclocking, and intelligent thermal protection.</p><p>Marathon has been working on developing and testing the firmware and control board for the past year and showed positive results while rolling out this technology across its fleet of mining rigs. As a result, it is now offering MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 to the broader Bitcoin mining community. In my opinion, these features could become popular among Bitcoin miners since mining difficulty is expected to increase after the upcoming Bitcoin halving event this month.</p><p>Marathon has 2 pricing tiers for its technology. The first tier is for $125 per unit including a lifetime license and the second tier is for $99 per unit in addition to a 2% developer fee. This means that Marathon will receive 2% of all Bitcoin mined using each miner equipped with its technology, providing an opportunity to generate recurring revenue for the lifetime of the miner. I believe the lifetime license tier is more suited for more established miners with strong liquidity while the tier with the 2% developer fee is more suited for small miners with limited cash.</p><p>Marathon also unveiled a new two-phase immersion cooling system, MARA 2PIC700, that enables 2 to 4 times the power density and can reduce the space requirements for data centers by up to 75%. It can operate in temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius which means that it can operate in harsh climates that usually lead miners to stop operating. Marathon claims that using this system could allow miners to be overclocked by 60 to 100% and can reduce cooling costs by up to 60%.</p><p>As mining costs become more critical for miners after the halving event, I expect these features to attract several suitors since these cost savings will offset the higher costs associated with the expected increase in mining difficulty. At the same time, miners using this system could operate normally during times of extremely low or high temperatures.</p><p>As is, low temperatures can lead to a decrease in electrical conductivity of the silicon used in the ASIC chips which can make it difficult for the miner to reach the temperature at which it operates most efficiently. Whereas during hot weather mining rigs can suffer from thermal throttling without proper cooling which automatically reduces the rigs’ performance to cool down. Given the potential of MARAFW, MARA UCB 2100, and MARA 2PIC700, I believe Marathon is well positioned to benefit greatly from the growth of the Bitcoin mining industry since its technology could be included in most data centers in the future.</p><h2 id=\"id_32173843\">Revenue Forecast &amp; Price Target</h2><p>In my previous article, I forecasted Bitcoin to reach $100 thousand post halving based on its performance following the past 4 halving events and Marathon to produce 10,679 Bitcoin this year based on its expected hashrate. MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 are compatible with most stock control boards and feature hashrate optimization, auto-tuning, overclocking, underclocking, and intelligent thermal protection.Marathon has been working on developing and testing the firmware and control board for the past year and showed positive results while rolling out this technology across its fleet of mining rigs. As a result, it is now offering MARAFW and MARA UCB 2100 to the broader Bitcoin mining community. In my opinion, these features could become popular among Bitcoin miners since mining difficulty is expected to increase after the upcoming Bitcoin halving event this month.Marathon has 2 pricing tiers for its technology. The first tier is for $125 per unit including a lifetime license and the second tier is for $99 per unit in addition to a 2% developer fee.
