KONG/BEIJING, Jan 6 (Reuters) - China is in talks with Pfizer Inc to secure a licence that will","content":"

HONG KONG/BEIJING, Jan 6 (Reuters) - China is in talks with Pfizer Inc to secure a licence that will allow domestic drugmakers to manufacture and distribute a generic version of the U.S. firm's COVID-19 antiviral drug Paxlovid in China, three sources told Reuters.

China's medical products regulator - the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) - has been leading the talks with Pfizer since late last month, one of the sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Beijing is keen to finalise licensing deal terms before the Lunar New Year which begins on Jan. 22, the source said.

Chinese hospitals are under intense pressure after the government abruptly abandoned its "zero-COVID" policy last month, sending infections soaring. The surging wave of infections across the country has overwhelmed hospitals, emptied pharmacies of medicines and caused international alarm.

Paxlovid, found to have reduced hospitalisations in high-risk patients by around 90% in a clinical trial, is in high demand with many Chinese attempting to get the drug abroad and have it shipped to China. Beijing has been largely resistant to western vaccines and treatments. Oral treatment Paxlovid is one of the few foreign ones it has approved.

In February last year, China approved Paxlovid, which was supposed to be largely available via hospitals, to treat high-risk patients in several provinces. Pfizer last month reached an agreement to export Paxlovid to China through a local company to make the medicine more widely available.

The NMPA and the State Council Information Office, which handles media queries for the government, did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.

A Pfizer spokesperson said the company is actively collaborating with Chinese authorities and all stakeholders to secure an adequate supply of Paxlovid in China.

All the sources declined to be identified as they are not authorised to speak to media.

The NMPA held a meeting with several Chinese drugmakers in late December to discuss preparations needed to make a generic version of Paxlovid hoping it would be able to secure the licence in the near future, two of the sources said.

Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical, which signed a deal with Pfizer in August to produce Paxlovid only for use on the mainland, and CSPC Pharmaceutical Group, a developer of a potential mRNA COVID vaccine, are among those that attended the meeting, the first source said.

The second source said the NMPA has also advised firms to prepare to register with the regulator to produce the generic version of Paxlovid.

GENERIC DRUGMAKERS

Prospective candidates including Huahai and CSPC have in recent weeks been conducting "bioequivalence tests", which are required by Chinese regulators before generic drugs can be launched, the two sources and another source with direct knowledge of the matter said.

For a generic drug to be deemed equivalent to a branded medicine, such tests are required to make sure they work the same way in the body.

Both Huahai and CSPC expect to submit the tests results to the NMPA later this month, one of them added.

Huahai and CSPC did not respond to a request for comment.

In March, 35 generic drugmakers around the world including five Chinese firms agreed to make cheap versions of Paxlovid for 95 poorer countries through a licensing arrangement with the U.N.-backed Medicines Patent Pool (MPP). That licence does not allow the companies to sell generic Paxlovid in China.

The MPP licensing arrangement is royalty free for Pfizer, while COVID-19 remains classified as a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Following the pandemic period, sales to low-income countries will remain royalty free, lower-middle-income countries and upper-middle-income countries will be subject to a 5% royalty for sales to the public sector and a 10% royalty for sales to the private sector, MPP said at that time.

Due to severe shortages of antivirals as 1.4 billion Chinese battle infections, many have turned to underground channels to secure Paxlovid and other drugs, according to domestic media. Scalpers charge as much as 50,000 yuan ($7,260) for a box of Paxlovid, more than 20 times its original price of 2,300 yuan.

China has also pressed Pfizer to lower the price of Paxlovid as the government aims to include the drug in the national medical insurance scheme which could cover part of the cost, the three sources said.

($1 = 6.8875 Chinese yuan)

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
China in Talks With Pfizer for Generic COVID Drug
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nChina in Talks With Pfizer for Generic COVID Drug\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Reuters
\n
2023-01-07 07:15
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

The surging wave of infections across the country has overwhelmed hospitals, emptied pharmacies of medicines and caused international alarm.Paxlovid, found to have reduced hospitalisations in high-risk patients by around 90% in a clinical trial, is in high demand with many Chinese attempting to get the drug abroad and have it shipped to China. The NMPA and the State Council Information Office, which handles media queries for the government, did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.A Pfizer spokesperson said the company is actively collaborating with Chinese authorities and all stakeholders to secure an adequate supply of Paxlovid in China. All the sources declined to be identified as they are not authorised to speak to media. The NMPA held a meeting with several Chinese drugmakers in late December to discuss preparations needed to make a generic version of Paxlovid hoping it would be able to secure the licence in the near future, two of the sources said.Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical, which signed a deal with Pfizer in August to produce Paxlovid only for use on the mainland, and CSPC Pharmaceutical Group, a developer of a potential mRNA COVID vaccine, are among those that attended the meeting, the first source said. The second source said the NMPA has also advised firms to prepare to register with the regulator to produce the generic version of Paxlovid.GENERIC DRUGMAKERSProspective candidates including Huahai and CSPC have in recent weeks been conducting \"bioequivalence tests\", which are required by Chinese regulators before generic drugs can be launched, the two sources and another source with direct knowledge of the matter said. For a generic drug to be deemed equivalent to a branded medicine, such tests are required to make sure they work the same way in the body. Both Huahai and CSPC expect to submit the tests results to the NMPA later this month, one of them added.Huahai and CSPC did not respond to a request for comment. The MPP licensing arrangement is royalty free for Pfizer, while COVID-19 remains classified as a \"Public Health Emergency of International Concern\" by the World Health Organization (WHO).Following the pandemic period, sales to low-income countries will remain royalty free, lower-middle-income countries and upper-middle-income countries will be subject to a 5% royalty for sales to the public sector and a 10% royalty for sales to the private sector, MPP said at that time.Due to severe shortages of antivirals as 1.4 billion Chinese battle infections, many have turned to underground channels to secure Paxlovid and other drugs, according to domestic media. the nati","content":"

BALMORAL, Scotland, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, the nation's figurehead and a towering presence on the world stage for seven decades, died peacefully at her home in Scotland on Thursday aged 96.

"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family," the new king, her eldest son Charles, said.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world," the 73-year-old said in a statement.

News that the queen's health was deteriorating emerged shortly after midday on Thursday when her doctors said she was under medical supervision, prompting her family to rush to Scotland to be by her side.

Thousands gathered outside Buckingham Palace, in central London, and there was a stunned silence when the flag was lowered to half-mast. The crowd surged to the gates as the notice announcing the death of the only monarch most Britons have ever known was attached to the black iron gates.

Royal officials said King Charles III and his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, would remain at Balmoral Castle, where the queen died, before returning to London on Friday, when he is expected to address the nation and meet Prime Minister Liz Truss. Details of the funeral have not been confirmed.

On Elizabeth's death, Charles automatically became monarch of the United Kingdom and the head of state of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. He is expected to visit all the nations of the United Kingdom in the coming days.

'HUGE SHOCK TO THE NATION'

The queen, whose husband died last year, had been suffering from what Buckingham Palace had called "episodic mobility problems" since the end of last year, forcing her to withdraw from nearly all her public engagements.

Her last official duty came only on Tuesday, when she appointed Truss prime minister - the 15th of her reign.

"The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a huge shock to the nation and to the world," Truss said outside her Downing Street office where the flag, like those at royal palaces and government buildings across Britain, were lowered.

"Through thick and thin, Queen Elizabeth II provided us with the stability and the strength that we needed. She was the very spirit of Great Britain – and that spirit will endure," said Truss, who was informed of the death at 4:30 p.m. London time.

The news stunned not only people in Britain, with condolences pouring in from leaders around the world.

"Her legacy will loom large in the pages of British history, and in the story of our world," U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement. He ordered flags at the White House to be flown at half-mast

In Paris, the mayor announced the lights of the Eiffel Tower would be turned off in honour of her passing; in Brazil, the government declared three days of mourning; and the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council both stood for a moment of silence.

Even Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country's relations with Britain have plummeted over the war in Ukraine, extended his condolences, calling it an "irreparable loss".

Queen Elizabeth II, who was also the world's oldest and longest-serving head of state, came to the throne following the death of her father King George VI on Feb. 6, 1952, when she was just 25.

PLEDGED TO SERVE

She was crowned in June the following year. The first televised coronation was a foretaste of a new world in which the lives of the royals were to become increasingly scrutinised by the media.

"I have in sincerity pledged myself to your service, as so many of you are pledged to mine. Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust," she said in a speech to her subjects on her coronation day.

Despite reputedly only being about 5ft 3ins tall, she commanded any room she entered. Famed for her bright outfits, she is said to have quipped: "I have to be seen to be believed".

Elizabeth became monarch at a time when Britain still retained much of its old empire. It was emerging from the ravages of World War Two, with food rationing still in force and class and privilege still dominant in society.

Winston Churchill was Britain's prime minister at the time, Josef Stalin led the Soviet Union and the Korean War was raging.

In the decades that followed, Elizabeth witnessed massive political change and social upheaval at home and abroad. Her own family's tribulations, most notably the divorce of Charles and his late first wife Diana, were played out in full public glare.

While remaining an enduring symbol of stability and continuity for Britons at a time of relative national economic decline, Elizabeth also tried to adapt the ancient institution of monarchy to the demands of the modern era.

"She has managed to modernise and evolve the monarchy like no other," her grandson Prince William, who is now heir to the throne, said in a 2012 documentary.

RECORDS

Elizabeth was the 40th monarch in a royal line that followed Norman King William the Conqueror, who claimed the English throne in 1066 after defeating Anglo-Saxon ruler Harold II at the Battle of Hastings.

Her long reign meant she repeatedly broke records for British rulers. When she surpassed the more than 63 years her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria spent on the throne, she said it was not a landmark to which she had ever aspired.

"Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones - my own is no exception," she said.

Her marriage to Prince Philip lasted 73 years, until his death in April 2021, and they had four children, Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward.

She never gave a media interviewand critics said she came across as distant and aloof.

But for the vast majority of her subjects she was a figure who commanded respect and admiration. The "three stocks to avoid" in my column that I thought were going to lose to the market last week -- Coinbase, Despegar.com, and Bowlero -- fell 21%, 12%, and 12%, respectively, averaging out to a 15% plunge.

The S&P 500 experienced only a 0.7% move lower. I was right. I have been correct in 36 of the past 57 weeks, or 63% of the time.

Now let's look at the week ahead. I see Best Buy, Luckin Coffee, and Apple as stocks you might want to consider steering clear of this week. Let's go over my near-term concerns with all three investments.

1. Best Buy

Best Buy's revival a few years ago was a thing of beauty. Now we're seeing that the last major consumer-electronics superstore chain still standing is on wobbly legs.

The retailer reports fresh financials on Tuesday morning, and it won't be pretty. Analysts see revenue clocking in 13% lower than the prior-year's fiscal third quarter. Its profit is expected to be cut in half.

The near-term outlook is uninspiring. Wall Street pros see revenue slipping 11% for the current holiday quarter, as well as the entire fiscal 2023 year that ends in January. Profitability should take a bigger hit. If you're buying Best Buy for that chunky 4.9% yield, that's a dicey proposition when its bottom line is going the wrong way.

Rising costs and the inability of a brick-and-mortar chain to compete on price with bare-boned online merchants are making life hard for Best Buy, again. Now we have a potentially dimming economy setting back demand for consumer electronics.

To be fair, Best Buy's renaissance wasn't that exciting. You have to go back to fiscal 2009 -- 14 years -- to find the last time that this chain delivered top-line gains in the double digits.

2. Luckin Coffee

If you were to construct the perfect stock to avoid in a lab, it would probably look a lot like Luckin Coffee. It's a China-based company at a time when most investors outside of the country are steering clear of the market.

Let's also not forget that Luckin Coffee is a stock that -- like its hot java -- already burned investors before. You surely remember the accounting scandal of 2020.

Have you checked on Luckin Coffee stock lately? The stock is a 20-bagger off its C-suite drama low. The shares ended this past week within 0.5% of a new two-year high, nearly quadrupling from this-year's springtime bottom. We'll get an update on how it's brewing when it pours a cup of third-quarter results on Tuesday.

Luckin Coffee has done a commendable job turning things around. After years of losses, it was profitable in 2021. Revenue continued to grow.

However, Luckin Coffee's top-line gains have decelerated for four consecutive quarters. It also posted a loss in its previous quarter. It's hard to get excited about Luckin Coffee. It may seem like a low-priced indulgence, but it's a luxury that consumers will avoid if they need to save their money for more-pressing expenses.

3. Apple

Let's wrap-up this-week's list by picking on the country's most valuable company by market cap. I'm a longtime fan and investor in Apple, but I can see why it's a scary stock to hold heading into this particular holiday shopping season. The economy is on iffy footing, credit card debit is rising, and Apple isn't going to be immune from consumers steering clear of big-ticket purchases this season.

Apple held up well when most tech stocks got slammed earlier this year, but the class act of Cupertino is finally proving mortal. It doesn't help that its annual refresh of popular products wasn't overly impressive. With money already tight, it's easy to see consumers ride this year out and see what Apple springs on us in 2023.

Analysts aren't excited. They see revenue and earnings per share rising a mere 3% and 2%, respectively, for the new fiscal year.

It's going to be a bumpy road for some of these investments. If you're looking for safe stocks, you aren't likely to find them in Best Buy, Luckin Coffee, and Apple this week.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Stocks to Avoid This Week
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Stocks to Avoid This Week\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-11-22 11:50 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Last week was a letdown for investors long the market after a strong rally the week before. You have to go back to fiscal 2009 -- 14 years -- to find the last time that this chain delivered top-line gains in the double digits.2. Luckin CoffeeIf you were to construct the perfect stock to avoid in a lab, it would probably look a lot like Luckin Coffee. It's a China-based company at a time when most investors outside of the country are steering clear of the market.Let's also not forget that Luckin Coffee is a stock that -- like its hot java -- already burned investors before. You surely remember the accounting scandal of 2020.Have you checked on Luckin Coffee stock lately? The stock is a 20-bagger off its C-suite drama low. The shares ended this past week within 0.5% of a new two-year high, nearly quadrupling from this-year's springtime bottom. We'll get an update on how it's brewing when it pours a cup of third-quarter results on Tuesday.Luckin Coffee has done a commendable job turning things around. After years of losses, it was profitable in 2021. Revenue continued to grow. However, Luckin Coffee's top-line gains have decelerated for four consecutive quarters. It also posted a loss in its previous quarter. It's hard to get excited about Luckin Coffee. It may seem like a low-priced indulgence, but it's a luxury that consumers will avoid if they need to save their money for more-pressing expenses.3. AppleLet's wrap-up this-week's list by picking on the country's most valuable company by market cap. I'm a longtime fan and investor in Apple, but I can see why it's a scary stock to hold heading into this particular holiday shopping season. The economy is on iffy footing, credit card debit is rising, and Apple isn't going to be immune from consumers steering clear of big-ticket purchases this season.Apple held up well when most tech stocks got slammed earlier this year, but the class act of Cupertino is finally proving mortal. It doesn't help that its annual refresh of popular products wasn't overly impressive. With money already tight, it's easy to see consumers ride this year out and see what Apple springs on us in 2023.Analysts aren't excited. They see revenue and earnings per share rising a mere 3% and 2%, respectively, for the new fiscal year. It's going to be a bumpy road for some of these investments. If you're looking for safe stocks, you aren't likely to find them in Best Buy, Luckin Coffee, and Apple this week.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":632,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9906810317,"gmtCreate":1659513155742,"gmtModify":1705981153931,"author":{"id":"3573516985440152","authorId":"3573516985440152","name":"KennethLim","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b14c36aded4c09af72784800119db550","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3573516985440152","idStr":"3573516985440152"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a That's a solid top-line performance for a pharma giant. The drugmaker's adjusted earnings per share for the year increased 20.3% to $12.70. And with an above-average yield of 3.74% and a conservative payout ratio of 42%, AbbVie looks more than able to sustain further dividend increases ahead.

That's just one more reason to purchase shares of this pharma giant. Overall, AbbVie looks like a solid company to hold on to through thick and thin.

2. Apple

Apple's iPhone has been immensely successful since it was introduced in 2007. The company remains a leader in this industry with a 22% share of the smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2021. During its fiscal year 2021 (ended Sept. 25), Apple generated $192 billion in sales from its iPhone segment, 39.3% higher than the previous fiscal year.

Could Apple lose its dominance in the smartphone market?
