If only. It happened—and the ride brings into sharp relief the battle over Tesla’s autonomous driving software and how stockholders need context so they can better assess risks to their Tesla (ticker: TSLA) positions as driver-assistance technology advances.

The bull was Ross Gerber, a Tesla shareholder and CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management. The bear was Green Hills Software founder Dan O’Dowd. The ride happened in Santa Monica, Calif. in Gerber’s Model S equipped with Full Self Driving (FSD).

Gerber wanted to show O’Dowd that FSD was getting better and able to conduct a significant amount of city driving without intervention. O’Dowd is an FSD critic who wants it banned.

Investors can probably guess how it went. Gerber believed things went great with the hour-or-so-long drive requiring just a couple of interventions. FSD is a so-called level 2 autonomous driving system, which means drivers need to stay focused on the road 100% of the time. Drivers can stop paying attention and rely completely on the car in some situations with level 3 and level 4 systems.

O’Dowd felt differently and posted videos and tweets of the Model S approaching a stop sign where it appears Gerber was forced to intervene as his Tesla approached the intersection too fast while another vehicle took the left turn too sharply.

O’Dowd said FSD tried to “kill someone.” After his social media activity Twitter exploded. Videos analyzed the footage like it was the Zapruder film (which captured the assassination of John F. Kennedy). There were maps of the intersection showing the actual line to stop was 30 feet beyond the stop sign, a quirk of that intersection. People zoomed in on Ross’s foot to see if he was on the accelerator, which would automatically disengage FSD. (The car responds to driver input first over the automated system.)

“The results of our leisurely drive corroborate The Dawn Project’s previous findings, which show that Tesla’s Full Self Driving software sometimes does not register basic safety-critical road signs,” O’Dowd told Barron’s in an emailed statement. “Were it not for [Gerber braking] FSD would have put us all in the hospital, turning our one-hour leisurely drive into a tragedy. A product that tries to kill someone every hour should never be sold to consumers, let alone be allowed onto our public roads.”

So, why is the National Highway Traffic Administration letting it happen? For starters, driver assistance systems improve safety. There is a risk that any system is abused—such as drivers failing to pay attention. But NHTSA knows that, which is why it requires auto makers to report any incidents involving advance assistance systems.

Tesla actually reports the most incidents of any auto maker by far—about 800 since July 2021. That’s because the company has the largest fleet of connected vehicles on the road, which tell Tesla what happened automatically. Other auto makers have to rely on word of mouth and police reports.

NHTSA, fortunately, doesn’t rely on Twitter to come up with rules and recalls. It takes complaints, investigates them, and requires recalls if a safety issue is identified. NHTSA is investigating Tesla driver assistance technology. It has mandated changes in recalls. A recall comes after the investigation.

NHTSA didn’t respond to a request for comment about the O’Dowd-Gerber drive.

Gerber doesn’t feel the same way as his passenger. “Dan and I drove on FSD all over Santa Barbara on a perfect ride,” he told Barron’s. “When taking him home this funky stop sign thing happened where I disengaged the car as I anticipated the white car was turning into me making a left. This was a none event and very common when using FSD.”

For investors, it’s about risk and reward. FSD rewards are easy to imagine. ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood says true self-driving is around the corner and sees a fleet of Tesla robotaxis generating $155 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda, a year by 2027. That’s more Ebitda than Apple (AAPL) generates today.

That’s the high-end potential reward. The risk is that FSD doesn’t become truly self-driving and that other systems pass it in capability. That becomes a market share problem for Tesla. There is also a risk that NHTSA does something dramatic and requires FSD to be “turned off.” It’s something to consider, but it appears to be a small risk.

Tesla stock has been relatively unaffected by the incident. Shares are down about 9% over the past five days, but that dip came after they rose more than 50% over the preceding four weeks. Tesla stock is up about 103% so far this year, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have added about 15% and 30%, respectively.

Write to Al Root at allen.root@dowjones.com

","source":"mwatch_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Self-Driving Ride Causes Twitter Storm Over Safety. (The car responds to driver input first over the automated system.) “The results of our leisurely drive corroborate The Dawn Project’s previous findings, which show that Tesla’s Full Self Driving software sometimes does not register basic safety-critical road signs,” O’Dowd told Barron’s in an emailed statement. “Were it not for [Gerber braking] FSD would have put us all in the hospital, turning our one-hour leisurely drive into a tragedy. A product that tries to kill someone every hour should never be sold to consumers, let alone be allowed onto our public roads.” So, why is the National Highway Traffic Administration letting it happen? This was a none event and very common when using FSD.” For investors, it’s about risk and reward. With indexes like the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Dow Jones Industrial Average in correction or bear-market territory, many stocks have been cut in half -- or worse.

Yet, for investors willing to play the long game, opportunities abound. Here, I'll cover five stocks down at least 50% from all-time highs.

These stocks have been decimated, but that doesn't mean they're untouchable. In fact, small, long-term investments in these companies are likely to pay off if you can stomach the volatility.

Snowflake

Out of these five stocks, Snowflake has performed the best recently -- up 23% over the last month. Nevertheless, it's still off its all-time high by 64%.

Snowflake runs a cloud-analytics business that helps companies become more efficient. Others call that wishful thinking, citing complaints about bad service within the current charging systems.U.S. STATES: Quinn said the states now have a \"green light\" to move forward with their plans to award $700 million in federal funds to build up their charging networks.EV CHARGING COMPANIES: Many, including Volkswagen's Electrify America, ChargePoint and EVGo, will accelerate the rollout of chargers due to the federal funding.SKILLED LABOR: The requirement that trained electricians provide installation and maintenance of the charging stations will likely lead to the creation of more higher-paying jobs, said Miles Muller, an attorney in the clean vehicle program at the National Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group. The standards require that all chargers work at least 97% of the time.U.S. STEELMAKERS/SUPPLIERS: The standards immediately require any manufacturing of the chargers' iron and steel enclosures or housing occur in the United States. In addition, at least 55% of the cost of all parts in the chargers must be made in the United States by July 2024.Welding giant Lincoln Electric for instance has announced a new line of fast chargers, while Blink Charging Co will expand its charger manufacturing plant in Maryland and plans to announce another factory this year.U.S. EV AUTO SECTOR: The rollout of more charging stations will encourage EV adoption in the United States. That could potentially boost sales for automakers like Ford Motor Co, General Motors Co, VW as well as startups like Rivian and Lucid.U.S. ELECTRIC UTILITIES: They get to tap the new federal funds to build chargers, and accelerated growth for EVs would boost electricity use.INTERSTATE HIGHWAY REST STOPS: They could see an influx of investment as companies establish charging stations along heavily traveled routes. That could benefit companies like BP and Hertz, which are expanding charging at their gas stations and rental car locations, respectively. Rest stop operators like privately held Pilot Co and TravelCenters of America could also benefit.TESLA: Under the new charging standards, the White House said EV market leader Tesla has agreed to open part of its U.S. charging network to EVs made by rivals. That could help turn Tesla charging sites into the universal filling station of the EV era, analysts said.LOSERSTESLA: However, the opening of Tesla's network also risks eroding the company's competitive edge for vehicles made by the company that currently have exclusive access to the biggest U.S. network of high-speed superchargers, analysts said.EV CHARGING COMPANIES: While the charging companies get financial support in their expansion efforts, only a handful of the dozen who commented to the Biden administration ahead of Wednesday's announcement said that they could meet the \"Buy American\" standards under the proposed timelines.OVERSEAS STEELMAKERS/SUPPLIERS: The requirement on domestic manufacturing will hurt overseas suppliers, although the Biden administration hopes that forces them to open plants in the United States as a result, analysts said.Australia's Tritium on Wednesday announced it will add more than 250 jobs at its Tennessee charger manufacturing plant. Germany's Siemens recently announced its second U.S. charging manufacturing plant in Texas, while South Korea's SK Signet will open a manufacturing plant in Texas, the White House said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":642,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9932015652,"gmtCreate":1662855875077,"gmtModify":1676537149912,"author":{"id":"3573787663016896","authorId":"3573787663016896","name":"Cxxxx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b8baffb4e3d55b59ce44a8635bb42997","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573787663016896","authorIdStr":"3573787663016896"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$ok","listText":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$ok","text":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$ok","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/7a57e61baeabf18176f6c1e21c032059","width":"1125","height":"2184"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9932015652","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":80,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9996104349,"gmtCreate":1661129473783,"gmtModify":1676536457515,"author":{"id":"3573787663016896","authorId":"3573787663016896","name":"Cxxxx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b8baffb4e3d55b59ce44a8635bb42997","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573787663016896","authorIdStr":"3573787663016896"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$Ok","listText":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$Ok","text":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$Ok","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/054b282d06cdc2a19a537a2a2eb83e7e","width":"1125","height":"2184"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9996104349","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":45,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9905657255,"gmtCreate":1659883123578,"gmtModify":1703767319123,"author":{"id":"3573787663016896","authorId":"3573787663016896","name":"Cxxxx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b8baffb4e3d55b59ce44a8635bb42997","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573787663016896","authorIdStr":"3573787663016896"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$ok","listText":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$ok","text":"$GANFENGLITHIUM(01772)$ok","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5b60df899b4febefc97e61d6ee4ace27","width":"1125","height":"2184"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9905657255","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":172,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9947297259,"gmtCreate":1683166324472,"gmtModify":1683166327875,"author":{"id":"3573787663016896","authorId":"3573787663016896","name":"Cxxxx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b8baffb4e3d55b59ce44a8635bb42997","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573787663016896","authorIdStr":"3573787663016896"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9947297259","repostId":"2332900653","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2332900653","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1683162569,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2332900653?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-05-04 09:09","market":"us","language":"en","title":"US Senate Repeals Solar Panel Tariff Suspension, Biden Expected to Veto","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2332900653","media":"Reuters","summary":"WASHINGTON, May 3 (Reuters) -
