Accordingly, investors would have expected the company to have instituted most of its cost-cutting efforts.

However, with Li telegraphing salary freezes and bonus cuts, investors need to parse whether Sea Limited is on track to meet the guidance it proffered at its Q3 earnings call.

As a reminder, the company guided toward adjusted EBITDA breakeven for Shopee (Sea Limited's e-commerce arm) exiting Q4'23. As such, the company is under significant pressure to deliver, even as macroeconomic headwinds in Asia have likely worsened.

Notwithstanding, Li also took the opportunity to calm investors' nerves over its unprofitable business model, as he accentuated: "I want to assure you we will be starting 2023 on stable footing. Most of the big changes we need to make are complete."

Asia's Economies Facing More Headwinds In 2023

Recent cost-cutting measures by Southeast Asia's leading delivery and ride-hailing companies GoTo (GOTO-INDONESIA) and Grab Holdings (GRAB) suggested that all's not well in the region as it grapples with slower growth.

The Asian Development Bank also downgraded Asia's GDP growth outlook for 2023, as the region is impacted by "a global slowdown and the prolonged war in Ukraine."

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong cautioned in his New Year's Eve message to the nation to expect potentially slower growth in 2023, emphasizing that "[Singapore's] economy will be affected."

As such, we believe Sea Limited's near-term challenges have likely intensified as macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds from the US and Europe seep into Asia.

Alibaba-backed Lazada Getting Ready To Strike

However, the silver lining is China's growth algorithm could be improved as it emerges from its post-reopening COVID resurgence, likely to peak during the Chinese New Year. Notwithstanding, that could also intensify Shopee's competition against Alibaba-backed Lazada (BABA).

Notably, Lazada snagged another round of investment from Alibaba in December, as BABA pumped in more than $1.6B to Lazada in 2022. We believe Alibaba is ready to take on Sea Limited more aggressively in 2022 as China emerges from its lockdowns, dealing Forrest Li with another significant challenge.

Chinese authorities have highlighted that the harsh clampdowns on its leading Internet companies could be over as China looks to stoke domestic consumption and industrial growth as export growth is expected to remain tepid in 2023 due to global macro headwinds.

Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang also accentuated his optimism in his New Year message to his employees, as he articulated:

The key word for the new year prospects I wrote down earlier this year is 'firm and stable'... as we begin 2023, I hope the key word for the new year will be 'advance.' As the country enters a new phase of living with COVID, and as the country points out the future direction of the platform economy, we are more convinced that the only way to solve many of the problems we encounter today is to develop ourselves - Nikkei Asia

Hence, we believe it's clear that Sea Limited is under immense pressure to move away from its unprofitable business model, as SE was ruthlessly taken apart by sellers over the past year.

As such, SE nearly round-tripped its COVID gains at its November bottom. However, a robust Q3 release, coupled with Li bringing back Shopee's guidance to reach profitability, likely attracted buyers.

Hence, the critical question facing investors is whether they have firm conviction that Shopee could execute well after the recent measures but impeded by macro headwinds.

Notwithstanding, Garena could have a better year in 2023, as Newzoo estimates suggest that the decline in 2022 in the gaming market should stabilize. Notably, growth is expected to reaccelerate through 2025, as it articulated:

The lockdown years may have pushed the games market to unsustainable levels of revenue, especially in the current economic climate, but the coming years look promising. We forecast the games market to grow from $179.1 billion in 2020 to $211.2 billion by 2025, growing at a +3.4% CAGR. - Newzoo

Takeaway

SE has pulled back more than 30% from its December highs toward its recent lows. As such, we believe the reward/risk has improved as SE moves toward oversold zones.

We were waiting for a deeper pullback but assessed that SE could consolidate constructively here. Therefore, buyers who missed its November lows can consider adding more positions at the current levels.

However, as SE remains unprofitable, any position should be considered speculative.

Rating: Speculative Buy (Revise from Hold)

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Sea Limited: Flirting With A Bottom
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nSea Limited: Flirting With A Bottom\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-01-03 11:46 GMT+8 Seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummarySea Limited's latest cost-cutting measures likely weren't expected and highlighted more challenges in meeting its outlook to take Shopee toward profitability. With Alibaba emerging from China's ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"SE":"Sea Ltd"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4567346-sea-limited-flirting-with-bottom","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"2300174687","content_text":"SummarySea Limited's latest cost-cutting measures likely weren't expected and highlighted more challenges in meeting its outlook to take Shopee toward profitability. With Alibaba emerging from China's Internet companies clampdown and COVID lockdowns malaise, Lazada could become more aggressive in taking on Shopee in 2023.With SE down more than 30% from its recent highs to its December lows, brave investors are given another opportunity to strike.Sea Limited: Cutting Costs AgainSea Limited (NYSE:SE) CEO Forrest Li stunned the market with a pre-Christmas internal memo highlighting more belt-tightening measures were underway. You feel invincible in a bull market, but in a bear market you feel like you'll never make money again. It's been a long fall for many growth stocks in 2022, but keep your head up. Historically, Wall Street has always recovered, and there isn't a reason why this would be any different.

The market will probably rebound at some point, so now is a great time to start thinking about your top investment ideas for 2023. Stocks like Shopify, Workday, and Sea Limited were losers in 2022, but here's why they could be big winners in 2023 and beyond.

Stock up on this e-commerce stock

Will Healy (Shopify): Most long-term Shopify investors probably want to forget 2022. This time last year, it had flirted with all-time highs. However, the bear market hit this one-time high-flyer hard. Since reaching its high, Shopify has lost almost 80% of its value.

Admittedly, the stock price had probably moved ahead of its growth rate. Also, e-commerce growth slowed as consumers emerged from lockdowns, making its price unsustainable. However, the case for Shopify stock may have improved during that time from a competitive standpoint. It has built an ecosystem to address the direct needs (and many of the indirect needs) of e-commerce businesses.

Shopify Plus, its software package designed to attract large and high-growth businesses, continues to gain traction. On the Q3 2022 earnings call, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein revealed that Plus claimed 35% of all point-of-sale pro sales in Q3, up from 14% in the year-ago quarter.

Additionally, the Shopify Fulfillment Network (SFN) facilitates order fulfillment and returns for customers. With Shopify's purchase of Deliverr complete, it can now serve as a one-stop shop for all logistics needs. The fact that Amazon is its only competitor in this area will help Shopify stand out above software-oriented peers.

Still, Shopify has returned to losses as the cost of building the fulfillment network weighs on the bottom line. Also, while Q3 revenue of $1.4 billion rose 22%, that lagged the three-year compound annual growth rate for revenue of 52%.

Nonetheless, for the remainder of 2022, the company predicted slowing operating expense growth and a higher percentage of merchant solutions revenue. Merchant solutions, the segment that includes SFN and other business management services, accounted for 72% of company revenue in Q3. Shopify's revenue also rose 26% year over year, beating the overall average.

Moreover, its stock sells for just 9 times sales, a massive reduction from the 45 P/S ratio it reached one year ago. With the company positioned for increased growth, Shopify stock should experience a recovery in 2023.

Shares of this workforce management company could bounce back in 2023

Jake Lerch (Workday): If you think 2023 can be a bounce-back year for the stock market (and I do), it's worth pondering: Which stocks would benefit the most? For me, Workday is a name that jumps off the page.

The company is a leading provider of cloud-based workplace solutions. It serves over 50% of Fortune 500 companies, supplying cloud enterprise solutions for human resources, financial planning, and analytics.

Like many tech stocks, Workday has been hit hard in 2022, with its share price falling 48% year to date. However, the company's fundamentals remain solid. Workday reported strong second-quarter earnings back in August and is due to report third-quarter earnings in mid-November.

Revenue continues to grow over 20% on a year-over-year basis and now stands at $5.7 billion over the last 12 months. Of that $5.7 billion, $5 billion comes from subscription revenue. What's more, back in August, management reiterated its long-term goal to reach $10 billion in annual sales.

WDAY data by YCharts

Workday continues to grow its customer base and has recently achieved FedRAMP-authorized status, meaning the company can now sell its products to U.S. government agencies.

It all adds up to a great environment for Workday in 2023 -- if the broader economy can get its act together. Next year the Federal Reserve is likely to pivot away from the massive interest rate hikes that have become the norm in 2022. Meanwhile, double-digit inflation will eventually moderate, relieving some pressure that has held back tech stocks this year.

And that's why I think Workday is poised to benefit. It's a name investors should get to know now -- before next year's catalysts take its stock significantly higher.

This internet company is cutting costs and gearing up for a big 2023

Justin Pope (Sea Limited): E-commerce, payments, and gaming company Sea Limited was among the big winners during the pandemic, soaring to a peak of roughly 1,000% from its pre-pandemic share price. But as they say, easy come, easy go. The stock has given up virtually all of those gains throughout 2022. Wall Street can be irrational sometimes, which means it can overshoot to both the upside and downside.

You saw the example of the upside when the stock ballooned to a price-to-sales ratio (P/S) of 30, a valuation showing how much the share price outran the business's growth during the pandemic. But today, you're seeing the opposite: The stock is trading at its lowest valuation ever, which might give someone the impression that Sea Limited is a struggling company.

SE PS Ratio data by YCharts

However, the data primarily disputes that. Sea Limited is generating more revenue than ever. The business saw a surge of growth during the pandemic, including 158% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2 of last year. But instead of declining after such a big leap, revenue increased another 29% in the second quarter of this year. Some may frown at what's technically a slower growth rate, but it signals that the COVID-19 boost was no fluke. One might even see growth pick back up next year as those tough growth comparables from 2021 pass.

The company isn't profitable, but invests heavily to fund growth. Fortunately, management has recognized the need to cut back some and did pull back on some of its expansion efforts in Latin America. Sea Limited is well funded, with $7.8 billion in cash, so the company is on solid financial footing.

Sea's seen some bumps in the road, but the car is still on the tracks. Investors can revisit this thought if the company burns through its cash reserves without making considerable progress toward turning a profit. It burned $1.4 billion over the past year, so that $7.4 billion should buy it time. Stocks like Shopify, Workday, and Sea Limited were losers in 2022, but here's why they could be big winners in 2023 and beyond.Stock up on this e-commerce stockWill Healy (Shopify): Most long-term Shopify investors probably want to forget 2022. This time last year, it had flirted with all-time highs. However, the bear market hit this one-time high-flyer hard. Since reaching its high, Shopify has lost almost 80% of its value.Admittedly, the stock price had probably moved ahead of its growth rate. Also, e-commerce growth slowed as consumers emerged from lockdowns, making its price unsustainable. However, the case for Shopify stock may have improved during that time from a competitive standpoint. It has built an ecosystem to address the direct needs (and many of the indirect needs) of e-commerce businesses.Shopify Plus, its software package designed to attract large and high-growth businesses, continues to gain traction. On the Q3 2022 earnings call, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein revealed that Plus claimed 35% of all point-of-sale pro sales in Q3, up from 14% in the year-ago quarter.Additionally, the Shopify Fulfillment Network (SFN) facilitates order fulfillment and returns for customers. With Shopify's purchase of Deliverr complete, it can now serve as a one-stop shop for all logistics needs. The fact that Amazon is its only competitor in this area will help Shopify stand out above software-oriented peers.Still, Shopify has returned to losses as the cost of building the fulfillment network weighs on the bottom line. Also, while Q3 revenue of $1.4 billion rose 22%, that lagged the three-year compound annual growth rate for revenue of 52%.Nonetheless, for the remainder of 2022, the company predicted slowing operating expense growth and a higher percentage of merchant solutions revenue. With the company positioned for increased growth, Shopify stock should experience a recovery in 2023.Shares of this workforce management company could bounce back in 2023Jake Lerch (Workday): If you think 2023 can be a bounce-back year for the stock market (and I do), it's worth pondering: Which stocks would benefit the most? For me, Workday is a name that jumps off the page. The company is a leading provider of cloud-based workplace solutions. It serves over 50% of Fortune 500 companies, supplying cloud enterprise solutions for human resources, financial planning, and analytics.Like many tech stocks, Workday has been hit hard in 2022, with its share price falling 48% year to date. However, the company's fundamentals remain solid. Workday reported strong second-quarter earnings back in August and is due to report third-quarter earnings in mid-November.Revenue continues to grow over 20% on a year-over-year basis and now stands at $5.7 billion over the last 12 months. Of that $5.7 billion, $5 billion comes from subscription revenue. What's more, back in August, management reiterated its long-term goal to reach $10 billion in annual sales.WDAY data by YChartsWorkday continues to grow its customer base and has recently achieved FedRAMP-authorized status, meaning the company can now sell its products to U.S. government agencies. This internet company is cutting costs and gearing up for a big 2023Justin Pope (Sea Limited): E-commerce, payments, and gaming company Sea Limited was among the big winners during the pandemic, soaring to a peak of roughly 1,000% from its pre-pandemic share price. But today, you're seeing the opposite: The stock is trading at its lowest valuation ever, which might give someone the impression that Sea Limited is a struggling company.SE PS Ratio data by YChartsHowever, the data primarily disputes that. Sea Limited is well funded, with $7.8 billion in cash, so the company is on solid financial footing.Sea's seen some bumps in the road, but the car is still on the tracks. Investors can revisit this thought if the company burns through its cash reserves without making considerable progress toward turning a profit. It burned $1.4 billion over the past year, so that $7.4 billion should buy it time. Assuming Sea Limited can continue growing while it reduces its cash burn, the dire valuation leaves room for an upside move once market sentiment improves.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":408,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9986389004,"gmtCreate":1666886513808,"gmtModify":1676537824985,"author":{"id":"3574206025913801","authorId":"3574206025913801","name":"DCkia","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8bf9b2f32b2b0c01d73ca8c38295717f","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574206025913801","idStr":"3574206025913801"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yolo","listText":"Yolo","text":"Yolo","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b54a71effe75e45e15fa23abd6462629","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9986389004","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":49,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9911236168,"gmtCreate":1664207028754,"gmtModify":1676537410290,"author":{"id":"3574206025913801","authorId":"3574206025913801","name":"DCkia","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8bf9b2f32b2b0c01d73ca8c38295717f","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574206025913801","idStr":"3574206025913801"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"🤑🤑🤑","listText":"🤑🤑🤑","text":"🤑🤑🤑","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9911236168","repostId":"2270505400","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2270505400","pubTimestamp":1664205741,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2270505400?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-09-26 23:22","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Investing in This ETF Right Now Could Make You a Millionaire Retiree","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2270505400","media":"MotleyFool","summary":"The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust is a low-cost index ETF that attempts to track the S&P 500 index, which is often used as a proxy for the overall US stock market. It's been a dramatic fall since then: Oil prices have crashed below $100 per barrel as of this writing. As prices continued to plunge, big institutions like hedge funds closed massive amounts of long position in crude last week, according to Bloomberg, and that's further added to the pressure on oil prices this week. A long position simply means investors bought commodity (crude oil) futures in a bid to profit from a rise in prices. As prices started to fall, they sold off their positions to book profits and minimize losses.

As China, the world's largest oil importer, puts several cities under a lockdown to combat rising coronavirus cases, the possibility of a fall in demand from China has further exacerbated the sell-off in oil and gas.

In its monthly oil report released today, OPEC reiterated its previous outlook for oil-demand growth but kept this year's consumption estimate under "assessment" given the geopolitical uncertainty. Just yesterday, Morgan Stanley analyst Devin McDermott downgraded Chevron stock's rating from "overweight" to "equal weight" as he believes the stock has started to look expensive after its recent rally, according to TheFly.com. It may not be a coincidence, then, that Chevron shares closed Monday at $166.72 a share and fell today.

Notably, McDermott prefers ExxonMobil over Chevron and sees the stock more attractively valued given Exxon's efforts to cut costs and boost cash flows. Exxon also has greater exposure to downstream oil and gas activities that are more resilient to fluctuations in oil prices.

McDermott also downgraded Occidental Petroleum given the stock's stunning rally, but bumped up his price target marginally to $52 a share, driven by the company's high-quality assets and "non-oil linked cash flow."

Now what

It's hard to predict where oil and gas prices could go next, so the stocks that tanked today could head in either direction tomorrow. (The contribution limits are even higher for workers ages 50 and up. )The bottom end of that savings rate -- $300 per month -- works out to around $10 per day. Even at that savings level, as long as you invest consistently throughout the length of a typical working career, you've got a decent shot at reaching millionaire status by the time you retire.Get started nowRegardless of where you are in your career, you'll never again have more time before you retire than you do right now. That makes today a great day to get your plan in place. The sooner you get started, the more of the cells in that table will be within your reach, improving your chances of retiring a millionaire.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":149,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9038363736,"gmtCreate":1646745417238,"gmtModify":1676534157255,"author":{"id":"3574206025913801","authorId":"3574206025913801","name":"DCkia","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8bf9b2f32b2b0c01d73ca8c38295717f","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574206025913801","authorIdStr":"3574206025913801"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Imperial Petroleum Inc(IMPP)$small gain but still something to gain [Heart] ","listText":"$Imperial Petroleum Inc(IMPP)$small gain but still something to gain [Heart] ","text":"$Imperial Petroleum Inc(IMPP)$small gain but still something to gain [Heart]","images":[{"img":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/6e19e5c27a2b3fa97c5f163334244de4","width":"1080","height":"2220"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9038363736","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":220,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9003890013,"gmtCreate":1640918861994,"gmtModify":1676533555160,"author":{"id":"3574206025913801","authorId":"3574206025913801","name":"DCkia","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8bf9b2f32b2b0c01d73ca8c38295717f","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574206025913801","authorIdStr":"3574206025913801"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9003890013","repostId":"2195349000","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2195349000","pubTimestamp":1640918160,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2195349000?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-12-31 10:36","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"Oil heads for biggest yearly gains since 2009","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2195349000","media":"StreetInsider","summary":"MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Oil prices fell 1% on Friday but were set to post their biggest annual gai","content":"

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Oil prices fell 1% on Friday but were set to post their biggest annual gains in 12 years, spurred by the global economic recovery from the COVID-19 slump and producer restraint, even as infections surged to record highs around the world.

On the last day of 2021, Brent crude futures were on track to end the year up 53%, while U.S. crude futures were headed for a 57% gain, the strongest performance for the two benchmark contracts since 2009, when prices soared more than 70%.

"We've had Delta and Omicron and all manner of lockdowns and travel restrictions, but demand for oil has remained relatively firm.
