on upbeat note

* Procter & Gamble gains after raising outlook

* Indexes down: Dow 0.96%, S&P 0.97%, Nasdaq 1.15%

Jan 19 (Reuters) - Wall Street's main indexes ended sharply lower on Wednesday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq confirming it was in a correction, after a diverse set of corporate earnings and as investors continued to worry about higher U.S. Treasury yields and the Federal Reserve tightening monetary policy.

The Nasdaq ended down 10.7% from its Nov. 19 closing record high, as stocks sold off into the market close. A correction is confirmed when an index closes 10% or more below its record closing level.

The Nasdaq's last correction was in early 2021, when the tech-heavy index fell more than 10% from Feb. 12 to March 8. It was the fourth time in the two years

since the coronavirus pandemic shook global markets that the index has found itself in a correction.

On Wednesday, Apple shares fell 2.1%, weighing most on the Nasdaq, while declines in Tesla and Amazon also dragged on the index.

Stocks have gotten off to a rocky start in 2022, as a fast rise in Treasury yields amid concerns the Fed will become aggressive in controlling inflation has particularly hit tech and growth shares. The benchmark S&P 500 is down about 5% so far this year.

“Any beginning of tightening often results in significant volatility and I think there is always that risk that there is a policy error and it ends the economic cycle," said Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco. "So we just have a lot of apprehension.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 339.82 points, or 0.96%, to 35,028.65, the S&P 500 lost 44.35 points, or 0.97%, to 4,532.76 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 166.64 points, or 1.15%, to 14,340.26.

Consumer discretionary fell most among S&P 500 sectors, dropping 1.8%, while financials dropped about 1.7% and technology slid 1.4%.

The small-cap Russell 2000 fell 1.6%.

Stocks had tumbled on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq falling 2.6%, after weak results from Goldman Sachs and a spike in Treasury yields. The bond market has delivered its worst year on record, the S&P 500 produced its worst first-half return in 52 years, and the nation's central bank is aggressively raising interest rates as the stock market plunges. There simply haven't been many safe havens for investors.

Yet in spite of these challenges, most Wall Street analysts maintain an optimistic tone. The reason being that recessions and bear markets tend to be short-lived. With the major U.S. indexes eventually erasing corrections, crashes, and bear markets over time, it generally pays to be an optimist.

However, some analysts are taking optimism to an extreme. Based on the highest price targets issued by Wall Street, the following three supercharged growth stocks offer upside ranging between 393% and 1,153% in 2023.

Plug Power: Implied upside of 393%

The first fast-paced company with serious upside is hydrogen fuel-cell solution provider Plug Power. According to analyst Amit Dayal of H.C. Wainwright, Plug Power can reach $78. For those of you keeping score at home, this would work out to a near-quintupling in the company's share price in 2023.

Dayal's optimism stems from a number of catalysts. First and foremost is the ongoing shift by most developed countries toward a renewable-energy-driven future. Plug expects to play a key role in supplying fuel cells for vehicles and industrial equipment (e.g., forklifts), as well as building the infrastructure needed to support fuel cell vehicle refueling.

Additionally, Dayal is excited about management's efforts to improve operating margin while continuing to rapidly growing sales. Earlier this year, Dayal cited the opening of the company's fuel cell gigafactory in New York (this occurred in mid-November) and the rollout of next-generation GenDrive units, which are less costly to service, as reasons the company's margin can improve.

But the biggest catalyst of all might just be Plug Power's ability to forge partnerships and joint ventures. It landed an equity investment from SK Group in early 2021 and is working with Renault via a joint venture to go after a significant portion of Europe's light commercial vehicle market. These partnerships should help lift Plug from just over $500 million in sales in 2021 to a company-forecast $3 billion in revenue by 2025.

However -- and this is the big "however" -- Plug Power isn't profitable, and the growing likelihood of a U.S. recession, coupled with high inflation in most developed countries, could coerce businesses and governments to postpone their green-energy transition/spending to a later date.

With Plug Power already valued at north of $9 billion, a lot of its future sales growth appears to be baked in. Until the company can plant its proverbial feet in the ground and deliver on the bottom line, a $78 price target will be hard to justify.

Bionano Genomics: Implied upside of 474%

A second supercharged growth stock with monumental upside, at least according to one Wall Street analyst, is small-cap genome analysis company Bionano Genomics. If Oppenheimer analyst Francois Brisebois is correct, Bionano shares will hit $12 in 2023, which would represent an upside of a cool 474%.

Although Brisebois is the current analyst covering Bionano for Oppenheimer, it was his predecessor, Kevin DeGeeter, who primarily laid out the case for Bionano Genomics running to $12. In DeGeeter's view, Bionano's optical genome mapping (OGM) system, known as Saphyr, has demonstrated that it's faster, less expensive, and in many ways more effective at identifying structural genome variations than other OGM systems.

One thing investors don't have to worry about with Bionano Genomics is a lack of data demonstrating Saphyr's efficacy. Over the past two years, the company has released numerous studies and data points extolling Saphyr's ability to recognize structural variations in everything from various types of cancer to genetic disorders and recurrent pregnancy loss. In theory, Saphyr can play a key role in helping researchers and drug developers fight hard-to-treat diseases.

Another positive for Bionano Genomics is its healthy cash position. After its share price went parabolic to begin 2021, management wisely chose to issue stock to raise plenty of capital. The company ended September with approximately $180 million in cash, cash equivalents, and available-for-sale securities. That's more than enough to offset quarterly losses as the company continues to innovate and look for ways to expand Saphyr's utility.

So, why is Bionano Genomics at $2.09 per share and not $12? The answer to that question largely has to do with Saphyr not being an approved diagnostic system by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Without this approval, Saphyr's utility is limited within the United States. It's not exactly clear if and when Saphyr might get the green light from the FDA, either.

Although Bionano's cash does provide a somewhat safe floor, the ceiling proposed by Brisebois and DeGeeter doesn't seem achievable without FDA support.

Novavax: Implied upside of 1,153%

The third supercharged growth stock with truly jaw-dropping upside potential, based on the price target of one analyst, is biotech stock Novavax. According to H.C. Wainwright analyst Vernon Bernardino, who last updated his firm's price target in March 2022, Novavax is poised to hit (drum roll) $207 per share. That represents a whopping 1,153% upside from where shares ended this past week.

Bernardino's price target, which sits as the high-water mark among covering analysts, was based on the idea that Novavax would receive authorization to sell its protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, NVX-CoV2373, worldwide. Whereas the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines rely on messenger-RNA (mRNA) technology, the Novavax vaccine is differentiated in that it relies on an older and more traditional application of introducing harmless pieces of spike protein to teach a person's immune system how to fight and/or prevent infection. The thinking here is that folks who were leery of getting an mRNA vaccine might be more willing to receive an initial series or booster shots from Novavax's protein-based COVID-19 vaccine.

Something else that's working in Novavax's favor is the efficacy of NVX-CoV2373. Only three COVID-19 vaccines have reached the highly coveted 90% vaccine efficacy (VE) level. Those being Moderna (94.1%), Pfizer/BioNTech (95%), and Novavax (90.4%) with its U.S./Mexico trial in 2021. Even though VE is just one measure of efficacy, it's a strong enough headline number to keep Novavax in the global rotation as a major initial series and booster vaccine player.

Similar to Bionano, Novavax is swimming with cash. The company ended the third quarter with $1.28 billion in cash and cash equivalents, which is more than enough to cover the future repayment of its convertible notes and fuel ongoing research. In particular, Novavax could be one of the first drug developers to bring a combination vaccine targeting COVID-19 and influenza to market.

But even being a shareholder, I don't in any way foresee $207 as a viable price target for Novavax in 2023. With the company enduring numerous emergency-use filing delays and production snafus, it missed out on most of the low-hanging fruit in developed markets in 2022. Moving forward, it'll primarily be focusing its attention on recurring booster shots in developed countries and initial series vaccinations in emerging markets.

While I believe Novavax is an amazing value at its current share price, it could take a couple of quarters before Wall Street realizes that as well. If sales growth continues, losses shrink, and the company advances its combination vaccines, it could certainly end 2023 on a much higher note than it'll finish 2022.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Supercharged Growth Stocks With 393% to 1,153% Upside in 2023, According to Wall Street
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Supercharged Growth Stocks With 393% to 1,153% Upside in 2023, According to Wall Street\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-12-07 23:32 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
This has been a historic year for all the wrong reasons. The reason being that recessions and bear markets tend to be short-lived. With the major U.S. indexes eventually erasing corrections, crashes, and bear markets over time, it generally pays to be an optimist. However, some analysts are taking optimism to an extreme. Based on the highest price targets issued by Wall Street, the following three supercharged growth stocks offer upside ranging between 393% and 1,153% in 2023.Plug Power: Implied upside of 393%The first fast-paced company with serious upside is hydrogen fuel-cell solution provider Plug Power. According to analyst Amit Dayal of H.C. Wainwright, Plug Power can reach $78. For those of you keeping score at home, this would work out to a near-quintupling in the company's share price in 2023.Dayal's optimism stems from a number of catalysts. First and foremost is the ongoing shift by most developed countries toward a renewable-energy-driven future. Plug expects to play a key role in supplying fuel cells for vehicles and industrial equipment (e.g., forklifts), as well as building the infrastructure needed to support fuel cell vehicle refueling.Additionally, Dayal is excited about management's efforts to improve operating margin while continuing to rapidly growing sales. These partnerships should help lift Plug from just over $500 million in sales in 2021 to a company-forecast $3 billion in revenue by 2025.However -- and this is the big \"however\" -- Plug Power isn't profitable, and the growing likelihood of a U.S. recession, coupled with high inflation in most developed countries, could coerce businesses and governments to postpone their green-energy transition/spending to a later date. With Plug Power already valued at north of $9 billion, a lot of its future sales growth appears to be baked in. Until the company can plant its proverbial feet in the ground and deliver on the bottom line, a $78 price target will be hard to justify.Bionano Genomics: Implied upside of 474%A second supercharged growth stock with monumental upside, at least according to one Wall Street analyst, is small-cap genome analysis company Bionano Genomics. If Oppenheimer analyst Francois Brisebois is correct, Bionano shares will hit $12 in 2023, which would represent an upside of a cool 474%.Although Brisebois is the current analyst covering Bionano for Oppenheimer, it was his predecessor, Kevin DeGeeter, who primarily laid out the case for Bionano Genomics running to $12. In theory, Saphyr can play a key role in helping researchers and drug developers fight hard-to-treat diseases.Another positive for Bionano Genomics is its healthy cash position. It's not exactly clear if and when Saphyr might get the green light from the FDA, either.Although Bionano's cash does provide a somewhat safe floor, the ceiling proposed by Brisebois and DeGeeter doesn't seem achievable without FDA support.Novavax: Implied upside of 1,153%The third supercharged growth stock with truly jaw-dropping upside potential, based on the price target of one analyst, is biotech stock Novavax. According to H.C. Wainwright analyst Vernon Bernardino, who last updated his firm's price target in March 2022, Novavax is poised to hit (drum roll) $207 per share. That represents a whopping 1,153% upside from where shares ended this past week.Bernardino's price target, which sits as the high-water mark among covering analysts, was based on the idea that Novavax would receive authorization to sell its protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, NVX-CoV2373, worldwide. The thinking here is that folks who were leery of getting an mRNA vaccine might be more willing to receive an initial series or booster shots from Novavax's protein-based COVID-19 vaccine.Something else that's working in Novavax's favor is the efficacy of NVX-CoV2373. Only three COVID-19 vaccines have reached the highly coveted 90% vaccine efficacy (VE) level. Those being Moderna (94.1%), Pfizer/BioNTech (95%), and Novavax (90.4%) with its U.S./Mexico trial in 2021. Even though VE is just one measure of efficacy, it's a strong enough headline number to keep Novavax in the global rotation as a major initial series and booster vaccine player.Similar to Bionano, Novavax is swimming with cash. If sales growth continues, losses shrink, and the company advances its combination vaccines, it could certainly end 2023 on a much higher note than it'll finish 2022.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":130,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":379889813,"gmtCreate":1618715149032,"gmtModify":1704714256099,"author":{"id":"3574260792698407","authorId":"3574260792698407","name":"darrenlsw","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/146979aca2cc98520f97f1472521789b","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574260792698407","idStr":"3574260792698407"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Going to burn more money before make money ","listText":"Going to burn more money before make money ","text":"Going to burn more money before make money","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/379889813","repostId":"1179330583","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1179330583","pubTimestamp":1618588042,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1179330583?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-16 23:47","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Airbnb CEO says company is going to need millions more hosts to meet surging demand","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1179330583","media":"cnbc","summary":"KEY POINTS\n\nAirbnb is going to need millions of new hosts to meet incoming demand as travel picks up","content":"
\n
KEY POINTS\n\nAirbnb is going to need millions of new hosts to meet incoming demand as travel picks up again, CEO Brian Chesky told CNBC.\n\"To meet the demand over the coming years, we're going to need ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"cnbc_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; And we are seeing a lot of interest,” he said.\nAs part of that, Chesky said the company has done things like launch its “made possible by hosts” ad campaign. One of the more prominent emerging technologies over the past several years has been augmented reality (AR). Put simply, AR is the ability to combine the real world with a digital one. Two prominent examples of this technology are the popular mobile game Pokémon Go and the app Snapchat.

Because there are already use cases for AR, it's easy to see this as more of an ongoing trend than a passing fad. Therefore, it's natural for future-minded investors to seek ways to invest in the space. There are two companies that I think are particularly well positioned to be at the center of AR for years to come: Apple and Nvidia. Let's see which is the better stock to own.

1. Apple

Already one of the largest companies in the world, Apple has made an indelible mark on our society with its line of consumer electronics like phones, tablets, smartwatches, and computers. Part of what has made Apple so successful is its ability to consistently innovate and enter new product lines. At any given time, there are numerous rumors swirling around about what might be Apple's next big product.

Apple has long been expected to release some kind of AR product, likely in the form of glasses or goggles. Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook made comments that seem to indicate something may be on the horizon, teasing, "I couldn't be more excited about the opportunities we've seen in this space. And sort of stay tuned and you'll see what we have to offer."

To be clear, rumors and vague interview comments are not an investing thesis, but Apple does have a track record of launching new products that go on to see great success. Additionally, Apple has been a player in this space for years, introducing AR capabilities on its iPhone and iPad starting in 2017.

Even without a confirmed AR product, Apple continues to be a good investment. In the second quarter of 2022, Apple posted a record $93.7 billion in quarterly revenue, a 9% year-over-year increase. That comes on top of 54% revenue growth in the year-ago quarter, and was driven by year-over-year growth in every product category other than the iPad. Additionally, Apple is trading for a price to earnings (P/E) multiple of 23, which is slightly below the S&P 500's average of 24.

2. Nvidia

From its start building PC graphics cards, Nvidia has grown to be a leading provider of chips for a variety of use cases, including gaming, data centers, and the automotive industry. As it pertains to AR, Nvidia's technology is already being used in a variety of ways by large enterprise customers. Nvidia's chips are powering virtual car showrooms, surgical training, and architectural walkthroughs, showing the everyday use cases for this technology.

One of the most commonly cited consumer uses for AR is in gaming, which comprises approximately 43% of Nvidia's sales. In Q1 of 2023, gaming revenue was a record $3.6 billion, good for a 31% year-over-year increase. One of the Nvidia products that led to this growth was its Nvidia RTX technology, which can help deliver AR experiences over 5G networks. As AR expands in the gaming space, Nvidia stands to benefit from the secular tailwinds.

Even after the tech sell-off we've seen this year, Nvidia trades at a premium, with its current P/E at 41. However, that is the lowest that multiple has been since late 2019. Nvidia grew its revenue more than 46%, is profitable, and generated more than $1 billion in free cash flow in Q1, so this premium price is to be expected.

Which is the better buy?

From a valuation standpoint, it could be argued that Apple is a bargain at its current valuation. That said, until we see an actual AR product, its role in this emerging technology is uncertain. For that reason, I think Nvidia is the better AR stock. It's already producing the chips that are powering AR technologies in a variety of industries and doesn't rely on one consumer product for its AR exposure. For investors who feel the premium valuation is worth it, Nvidia is my pick for the better augmented reality stock.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Better Augmented Reality Stock: Apple vs. Nvidia
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBetter Augmented Reality Stock: Apple vs. Nvidia\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-07-02 10:04 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
KEY POINTSApple's long-rumored AR device may be just around the corner.Nvidia is already powering AR across a variety of settings. In the technology sector, there are always new trends and fads, each ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AAPL":"苹果","NVDA":"英伟达"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2022/07/01/better-augmented-reality-stock-apple-vs-nvidia/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2248681169","content_text":"KEY POINTSApple's long-rumored AR device may be just around the corner.Nvidia is already powering AR across a variety of settings. In the technology sector, there are always new trends and fads, each with the promise of becoming \"the next big thing.\" One of the more prominent emerging technologies over the past several years has been augmented reality (AR). There are two companies that I think are particularly well positioned to be at the center of AR for years to come: Apple and Nvidia. Let's see which is the better stock to own.1. AppleAlready one of the largest companies in the world, Apple has made an indelible mark on our society with its line of consumer electronics like phones, tablets, smartwatches, and computers. Part of what has made Apple so successful is its ability to consistently innovate and enter new product lines. At any given time, there are numerous rumors swirling around about what might be Apple's next big product.Apple has long been expected to release some kind of AR product, likely in the form of glasses or goggles. Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook made comments that seem to indicate something may be on the horizon, teasing, \"I couldn't be more excited about the opportunities we've seen in this space. And sort of stay tuned and you'll see what we have to offer.\"To be clear, rumors and vague interview comments are not an investing thesis, but Apple does have a track record of launching new products that go on to see great success. Additionally, Apple has been a player in this space for years, introducing AR capabilities on its iPhone and iPad starting in 2017.Even without a confirmed AR product, Apple continues to be a good investment. In the second quarter of 2022, Apple posted a record $93.7 billion in quarterly revenue, a 9% year-over-year increase. That comes on top of 54% revenue growth in the year-ago quarter, and was driven by year-over-year growth in every product category other than the iPad. Additionally, Apple is trading for a price to earnings (P/E) multiple of 23, which is slightly below the S&P 500's average of 24.2. NvidiaFrom its start building PC graphics cards, Nvidia has grown to be a leading provider of chips for a variety of use cases, including gaming, data centers, and the automotive industry. As AR expands in the gaming space, Nvidia stands to benefit from the secular tailwinds.Even after the tech sell-off we've seen this year, Nvidia trades at a premium, with its current P/E at 41. However, that is the lowest that multiple has been since late 2019. Nvidia grew its revenue more than 46%, is profitable, and generated more than $1 billion in free cash flow in Q1, so this premium price is to be expected.Which is the better buy? From a valuation standpoint, it could be argued that Apple is a bargain at its current valuation. That said, until we see an actual AR product, its role in this emerging technology is uncertain. For that reason, I think Nvidia is the better AR stock. It's already producing the chips that are powering AR technologies in a variety of industries and doesn't rely on one consumer product for its AR exposure. For investors who feel the premium valuation is worth it, Nvidia is my pick for the better augmented reality stock.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":68,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":893624025,"gmtCreate":1628260461767,"gmtModify":1703504202612,"author":{"id":"3574260792698407","authorId":"3574260792698407","name":"darrenlsw","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/146979aca2cc98520f97f1472521789b","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574260792698407","idStr":"3574260792698407"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"So many choices to buy","listText":"So many choices to buy","text":"So many choices to buy","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":11,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/893624025","repostId":"1155656235","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1155656235","pubTimestamp":1628227304,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1155656235?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-06 13:21","market":"us","language":"en","title":"20 cloud stocks expected to increase sales the most over the next two years","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1155656235","media":"MarketWatch","summary":"Cloud ETFs are close to record highs, propelled by a rally in the sector\nAnalysts see stellar sales ","content":"
Cloud ETFs are close to record highs, propelled by a rally in the sector
\n
Analysts see stellar sales growth ahead for companies that provide cloud services. (Getty Images/iStockphoto)\nU.S. investors remain bullish, despite rumblings out of China and the spike in delta variant infections.\nCloud companies — those at the forefront of the shift in computing power to distributed models over the internet — are expected to grow at a rapid clip over the next several years, and four of the five largest exchange traded funds covering the space are close to hitting record highs.\nBelow is a screen of stocks held by those ETFs, showing which are expected to increase their sales the most through 2023. In an industry with many players at relatively early stages, increases in sales, rather than in earnings, might be the best driver of stock prices.\nTo begin the screen, we looked at the five largest cloud ETFs:\nSource: FactSet\nETFs might be your best way to take a broad approach for a long-term play on the cloud revolution. If you are interested in any ETF, you should review the fund manager’s website.\nHere’s a comparison of total returns through Aug. 4, along with those for the SPDR S&P 500 ETF and the Invesco QQQ Trust (which tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index) for comparison:\nSource: FactSet\nThe ETFs’ approaches differ. Investors might be fooled into thinking that this short-term downturn from stock sales represents an investment opportunity, however, as we'll see, Tesla still remains significantly overvalued.

Tesla Volume Ramp

Tesla's ability to continue succeeding is based on ramping volume and succeeding with new models.

Tesla Volume Ramp - Tesla Investor Presentation

The company has been ramping up volume although its Shanghai factory has suffered from COVID-19 volatility. However, it's worth noting that the company's factories and focused capacity for the Model S/X/3 are effectively done. The company could ramp up the Model Y or other future projects, however, it shows the company sees demand for other vehicles as peaked.

An example of this can be seen on Tesla's website. The cheapest Model 3 has an estimated delivery date of Aug-Nov 2022. The top end has a Jun-Aug 2022 delivery date. The top end Model Y is Jul-Sep 2022. The company's backlog has decreased substantially from its prior backlogs, and especially with the potential for a weaker market, we see that weakness continuing.

With competition increasing significantly, we view Tesla's volume ramp as slowing down. It's telling that the company doesn't have any new factories planned for its Model 3/S/X.

Tesla Energy Storage/Alternatives

Tesla has numerous alternative businesses including energy storage and other alternative businesses.

Tesla Alternative Businesses - Tesla Investor Presentation

The company's energy storage business is the bright spot in its alternatives business. The company has seen deployments increase 90% YoY. However, the company does have some risks to the business here. First, energy storage is a worse use of capital from a profit perspective versus building cars. Tesla itself has admitted that before.

That means that as long as there's volume demand for the company's cars, the company's energy storage will take a back seat. Second is the company's solar business. We've discussed this before, but this business is negligible. It's decreasing in size, has a single-digit market share and no competitive advantage.

Tesla Insurance

Another development for Tesla is the company's announcement that it's launching an insurance business.

Insurance Underwriting Results - PMR Law

Insurance isn't a high profit margin business. It relies on the generation of the float and the potential investments of the float to generate returns. A substantial insurance business can take advantage of a continuous float to invest and generate long-term returns without a significant negative impact to that float.

The takeaway here is that insurance companies operate off of scale. Travelers is the 10th largest insurance company in the world, insures more than 2 million vehicles. Even with 100% of U.S. Tesla owners getting insurance through Tesla, the company won't reach that number. More so, even if it did, the insurance business would only be valued at a few billion $ based on peers.

Warren Buffett whose Berkshire Hathaway owns GEICOrecently commented they don't expect Tesla to outperform here, given their data is mostly the same as the current insurers. Here, we believe the opposite is true. Not only will Tesla not outperform but the company could lose money or, in the event of a mistake, hurt a brand. We see three unique downsides for the company.

(1) Multi-line discount. Most major insurers offer to bundle home insurance with multiple cars, home insurance, umbrella insurance, etc. Tesla can't offer those discounts to customers meaning that offering competitively priced insurance will be more difficult.

(2) Reputation. It's no secret that Americans hate their insurance providers. Unfortunately, the premise of maximizing profits for the insurer is different from maximizing profits for the insuree. And oftentimes those competing interests come to clash at a tough time. Tesla will need to outperform its customers because of the reputational risk.

Someone who has a bad experience with Tesla insurance might leave Tesla overall. No one buys a different car because they dislike Progressive.

(3) Start Up Cost. Insurance is a crowded market without a high barrier to entry. However, Tesla will be spending substantial money to startup and join the industry. The company will be spending cost with no guarantee of returns, which is a risk for the company's future shareholder returns.

Tesla and Tech, A Unique Downside

We want to take the opportunity to highlight what we see as a unique risk for Tesla. The company is a massively popular car among tech industry employees. The carmaker has a >10% market share in California versus a 2% market share in the United States. It's well known in the hub of the technology industry how popular the company's cars are.

However, we see this as a unique potential downside for Tesla. The company's cheapest cars clock in at 2x the cheapest car from the traditional low-cost manufacturers (Honda and Toyota) as the company has struggled to meet expectations. Even versus luxury manufacturers such as BMW and Mercedes, the company's cheapest car is more expensive.

More so, the tech industry has suffered. After leading the bull market for the last 5 years, the market is now down roughly 25%. Given Tesla's unique positioning to tech industry employees, we expect the downturn will hurt the demand for the company's products, especially higher end products.

Tesla Isn't Recession Proof

Tesla has reasonably strong cash and cash equivalents at roughly $18 billion. However, the car industry is incredibly capitally intensive, and losses ramp up significantly during a market downturn.

Through the 2008 recession, U.S.carmakers lost $10s of billions. Capitol obligations can be difficult to avoid in the industry with factories needing to be kept running because the cost of shutting them off is even more expensive. However, that doesn't mean that they're making a profit. Tesla hasn't actually had to face a market downturn yet.

We expect there are two factors here that will again make Tesla less likely to survive a recession.

(1) People cut spending during a recession. Tesla is effectively a luxury brand at its pricing. In 2008, Toyota outperformed. During an upcoming recession, we expect Tesla to similarly underperform in line with luxury brands. They also might be less willing to try the uncertainty of an electric vehicle.

(2) Capital growth. Tesla is focused on growing substantially, and as we saw above, has numerous factories that it's planning to build. Those capital obligations without production could cause the company to have higher losses than companies only maintaining existing factories. That risk is worth paying close attention to.

Thesis Risk

The largest risk to our thesis is that Tesla is a unique company that has a proven ability to outperform. The company, in many ways, defined electric vehicles as a segment, especially luxury vehicles, and the company's competitors have struggled to compete. There's no guarantee that the company can't continue increasing market share and returns.

Conclusion

Tesla is now 40% below its 52-week highs. The company's weakness was exacerbated by Elon Musk's ownership and his pledging of the company's stock against his Twitter acquisition. That sell-off accelerated as a result of the general technology sell-off in the markets. Despite this underperformance, we see that as just the start.

The company is showing peak demand with no additional factories planned for the Model S/X/3. Most vehicle purchases can see delivery with is shorter delays than other manufacturers' vehicles such as Toyota's RAV4. We also view the company's position in the tech markets as a unique risk to its business model. As a result, we continue to recommend against investing in Tesla.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Twitter-Tesla Downturn Is Merely The Start
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe Twitter-Tesla Downturn Is Merely The Start\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-05-18 23:27 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryTesla's stock has suffered as a result of Elon Musk's planned Twitter acquisition and the potential for stock stales.Tesla has also been caught up with the overall tech stock sell-off, there's ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"TSLA":"特斯拉","TWTR":"Twitter"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4512479-twitter-tesla-downturn-is-merely-start","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1142044909","content_text":"SummaryTesla's stock has suffered as a result of Elon Musk's planned Twitter acquisition and the potential for stock stales.Tesla has also been caught up with the overall tech stock sell-off, there's a cost to be viewed as a tech company.Tesla has the risk of being popular among popular tech workers, which have suffered more heavily than other market workers. We see Tesla as grossly overvalued and more likely to underperform from the market downturn.Tesla's (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock has suffered recently with the company's market cap dropping to less than $900 billion, after pressure from Elon Musk's Twitter (TWTR)investment and potential stock sales. Investors might be fooled into thinking that this short-term downturn from stock sales represents an investment opportunity, however, as we'll see, Tesla still remains significantly overvalued.Tesla Volume RampTesla's ability to continue succeeding is based on ramping volume and succeeding with new models.Tesla Volume Ramp - Tesla Investor PresentationThe company has been ramping up volume although its Shanghai factory has suffered from COVID-19 volatility. It's telling that the company doesn't have any new factories planned for its Model 3/S/X.Tesla Energy Storage/AlternativesTesla has numerous alternative businesses including energy storage and other alternative businesses.Tesla Alternative Businesses - Tesla Investor PresentationThe company's energy storage business is the bright spot in its alternatives business. It's decreasing in size, has a single-digit market share and no competitive advantage.Tesla InsuranceAnother development for Tesla is the company's announcement that it's launching an insurance business.Insurance Underwriting Results - PMR LawInsurance isn't a high profit margin business. More so, even if it did, the insurance business would only be valued at a few billion $ based on peers.Warren Buffett whose Berkshire Hathaway owns GEICOrecently commented they don't expect Tesla to outperform here, given their data is mostly the same as the current insurers. Here, we believe the opposite is true. Not only will Tesla not outperform but the company could lose money or, in the event of a mistake, hurt a brand. We see three unique downsides for the company.(1) Multi-line discount. Most major insurers offer to bundle home insurance with multiple cars, home insurance, umbrella insurance, etc. Tesla can't offer those discounts to customers meaning that offering competitively priced insurance will be more difficult.(2) Reputation. It's no secret that Americans hate their insurance providers. Unfortunately, the premise of maximizing profits for the insurer is different from maximizing profits for the insuree. And oftentimes those competing interests come to clash at a tough time. Tesla will need to outperform its customers because of the reputational risk.Someone who has a bad experience with Tesla insurance might leave Tesla overall. No one buys a different car because they dislike Progressive.(3) Start Up Cost. Insurance is a crowded market without a high barrier to entry. However, Tesla will be spending substantial money to startup and join the industry. The company will be spending cost with no guarantee of returns, which is a risk for the company's future shareholder returns.Tesla and Tech, A Unique DownsideWe want to take the opportunity to highlight what we see as a unique risk for Tesla. Even versus luxury manufacturers such as BMW and Mercedes, the company's cheapest car is more expensive.More so, the tech industry has suffered. After leading the bull market for the last 5 years, the market is now down roughly 25%. Given Tesla's unique positioning to tech industry employees, we expect the downturn will hurt the demand for the company's products, especially higher end products.Tesla Isn't Recession ProofTesla has reasonably strong cash and cash equivalents at roughly $18 billion. However, the car industry is incredibly capitally intensive, and losses ramp up significantly during a market downturn.Through the 2008 recession, U.S.carmakers lost $10s of billions. Capitol obligations can be difficult to avoid in the industry with factories needing to be kept running because the cost of shutting them off is even more expensive. However, that doesn't mean that they're making a profit. Tesla hasn't actually had to face a market downturn yet.We expect there are two factors here that will again make Tesla less likely to survive a recession.(1) People cut spending during a recession. The famously successful moneyman's ability to identify businesses worth holding for the long haul has helped his company benefit from winners that kept on winning, translating into portfolio performance that has absolutely crushed the broader market.

With Buffett's incredible success in mind, taking some inspiration from the Oracle of Omaha could help take your portfolio to the next level. Here's a look at three stocks in the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio that are worth buying and holding for the long term.

1. Apple

Apple ( AAPL 0.18% ) has built one of the most valuable brands in the consumer electronics and software services spaces. The company is the far-and-away leader in the mobile hardware market, far exceeding the competition in terms of profitability in the category thanks to its top-tier pricing power and incredibly loyal customer base.

This brand strength and customer loyalty have also allowed it to become an early leader in emerging product categories and create a powerful, encompassing product ecosystem. The Oracle of Omaha has been absolutely effusive about his love for Apple, going so far as to describe it as "the best business" he knows and as one of the four pillars of Berkshire Hathaway.

The investment conglomerate's position in Apple is now worth roughly $157.5 billion. The tech company accounts for roughly 47% of Berkshire's stock portfolio, representing an absolutely massive vote of confidence from one of history's most successful investors. And with strong positions in mobile and computer hardware, software services, and untapped potential in unfolding categories such as augmented reality and smart cars, Apple looks poised to continue serving up more big wins.

2. Bank of America

The Federal Reserve recently announced a quarter-point interest rate increase and forecast six more rate hikes this year. The measures are being conducted with the intention of fighting high levels of inflation currently hitting the U.S. However, the downside to interest rate hikes is that they will create their own pressures on the economy by making it more expensive to borrow money to fund growth initiatives.

Banks are one of the few businesses that are positioned to directly benefit from rising interest rates, and Bank of America ( BAC 1.47% ) stands out as Buffett's favorite in the industry by far.

With roughly $45 billion of its stock holdings in its portfolio, Bank of America stands as Berkshire Hathaway's second-largest stock position. The business is in far better shape than it was when the pressures of the 2008-09 financial crisis brought it to the brink, and it looks positioned to benefit from the rising interest rate environment.

Bank of America also pays a substantial dividend, with its current yield sitting at roughly 2%. What's more, the company has been raising its payout at a rate that significantly exceeds the currently elevated rate of inflation. The company's last dividend hike represented a 17% increase, and favorable business trends could put the banking giant in a good position to deliver another substantial payout raise this year.

3. Amazon

Even more so than usual, Amazon ( AMZN 0.76% ) has been in the news lately. The tech giant is on track to carry out a 20-for-1 stock split in June, and the announcement has helped spur an uptick in bullish sentiment. The e-commerce and cloud computing giant has posted massive gains since its last stock split in 1999, and making its share price lower through a split would make buying the stock more accessible for many investors and open the door for inclusion in the Dow Jones Industrial Average index.

While the stock split won't do anything to alter the company's fundamental performance, it's worth noting that other growth stocks have seen stock gains correlate with split announcements and completions. Alphabet recently announced its own 20-for-1 stock split that corresponded with a surge in bullish momentum, and companies including Nvidia, Tesla, and Apple have also posted big valuation gains in windows of time shortly preceding and following splits.

However, while the potential for a near-term, split-related catalyst for gains may be appealing, it's Amazon's dominant positions in online retail and cloud infrastructure, as well as its fantastic penchant for innovation, that really stand out as reasons to own the stock for the long haul. In addition to its fast-growing digital ads business, the tech giant also has forefront positions in potentially revolutionary trends including artificial intelligence and robotics, and it looks poised to continue delivering wins for long-term shareholders.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The measures are being conducted with the intention of fighting high levels of inflation currently hitting the U.S. However, the downside to interest rate hikes is that they will create their own pressures on the economy by making it more expensive to borrow money to fund growth initiatives.Banks are one of the few businesses that are positioned to directly benefit from rising interest rates, and Bank of America ( BAC 1.47% ) stands out as Buffett's favorite in the industry by far. With roughly $45 billion of its stock holdings in its portfolio, Bank of America stands as Berkshire Hathaway's second-largest stock position. The business is in far better shape than it was when the pressures of the 2008-09 financial crisis brought it to the brink, and it looks positioned to benefit from the rising interest rate environment.Bank of America also pays a substantial dividend, with its current yield sitting at roughly 2%. What's more, the company has been raising its payout at a rate that significantly exceeds the currently elevated rate of inflation. The company's last dividend hike represented a 17% increase, and favorable business trends could put the banking giant in a good position to deliver another substantial payout raise this year.3. AmazonEven more so than usual, Amazon ( AMZN 0.76% ) has been in the news lately. In addition to its fast-growing digital ads business, the tech giant also has forefront positions in potentially revolutionary trends including artificial intelligence and robotics, and it looks poised to continue delivering wins for long-term shareholders.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":130,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192301809,"gmtCreate":1621141766801,"gmtModify":1704353323431,"author":{"id":"3574260792698407","authorId":"3574260792698407","name":"darrenlsw","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/146979aca2cc98520f97f1472521789b","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574260792698407","idStr":"3574260792698407"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Better be safe than sorry .
