Selling call options in a tough Feb

Just a short update this week. This week was a tough week. Last week I wrote that as the market started to turn and started going down, I decided to buy a few long term call options. These were the call options I bought, most with an expiry date in Jan 2025. $Procter & Gamble(PG)$ $Netflix(NFLX)$  $Pepsi(PEP)$ $Apple(AAPL)$ $Amazon.com(AMZN)$ $Alphabet(GOOG)$ $Microsoft(MSFT)$ This week, the market continued to go down. While on a whole I am quite confident in the quality of these companies and believe that they will do well in the next 1-2 years, it is still quite painful to see all these call options turning red. At this rate, Feb will not be a good month at all. I also think that the market will continue to struggle in the near term, so I decided to sell a corresponding

A choppy start to February

We are now in the midst of February. In fact with Feb being a short month, we are already more than halfway through. This month has seen a very volatile market. Earnings season continue to largely disappoint, CPI inflation numbers remain relatively high though showing some signs of tapering off, tech layoffs continue, and a big focus on AI because of ChatGPT. Last month, I mainly sold put options to collect premiums. This month, I continued to sell some put options , but I also bought several call options when prices dropped. Selling Put Once again, selling put options allowed me to generate profits of over $1,100 just in the first 2 weeks of Feb. Below are the put options I sold, and the reasons for doing so. 1. ‌$Alphabet(GOOG)$

January Review – A good start to 2023

In a blink of an eye, January is over, and we are deep into February already. I wanted to do a monthly review of how I did with my options, and of course reflect and see how I can do better. This comes a lotlater than I would have liked, but here it is. As this is the first time I am doing this, I will structure this monthly review in the following way: 1. Last month's performance 2. Reflections and learnings 3. Thoughts for the next month Performance for Jan 2023 January was a very good month for the stock market. With that, it was really easy to be profitable. A high level summary is given below. No of positions initiated: 27 No of positions closed or expired: 17 % of trades closed that were profitable: 82% ROI% for Jan: 4% The above summary only considers options, a

Stock Repair Options Strategy - What went wrong?

More recently, I learned about the repair strategy to accelerate the breakeven point of stocks that we are sitting on losses. I have several of those stocks, so I thought I will give it a try. The idea behind the repair strategy is to buy a call at a strike price close to the current price, and sell 2 calls at a higher strike price. The premium collected from the selling of 2 calls would typically cover the purchase of the 1 call option, so the position is "free". You can also read more about the repair strategy with example in the link below. https://www.investopedia.com/articles/trading/08/repair-strategy.asp Once you have established the positions, there are now a few scenarios: 1. Stock price remains at current price or go lower. In this case, the options expire worthless, and

First foray into options trading

First of all, wishing all a happy and prosperous lunar new year of the rabbit ahead! Last week i wrote how I decided to start optiosn trading this year to try and generate additional income.  Over the last few weeks, I have been learning as much as I can about options trading which I tried to summarize in my last post. In that post, I also put up a 2×2 matrix to summarize my understanding of the most basic ways one can trade options. That 2×2 matrix summarizes my understanding based on type of options, and action you can take. However, after thinking it through some more, I felt that presenting it this manner does not allow me to easily decide what to do and what kind of trades I should make. So, I put together another 2×2 matrix, but this time presenting it based on market sent

Getting started with Options Trading

This year I have decided to try using options to generate a new source of income. I have been learning as much as I can about options trading and I have also tried my hand in some simple trades. I will try to summarise what I have learned so far, and in the next post, will give a summary of some of the trades I have attempted and what I have learned. I will not go into the details of what is options trading here, there are many online resources that are available that can explain much better than I can. Just a couple useful ones that I benefitted from greatly can be found below: Options Trading for Beginners (Investopedia) - https://www.investopedia.com/articles/active-trading/040915/guide-option-trading-strategies-beginners.asp Options Trading in Singapore (Dr Wealth) - https://www.drwe
