Barronโs reports the government-supported Global Times says the plan is to โinvigorate the capital market and boost investor confidence.โAlong with the e-tailer shifting to sell more low-priced goods amid a difficult Chinese economy, and JD.com was able to report better than expected earnings.JD is one of the most popular platforms in China for online shopping, along with rival Alibaba (NYSE:BABA). It hosts some of the biggest shopping extravaganzas in the world between its midyear 618 event and the massive Singles Day shopping holiday in November.Expect JD.com to come roaring back to life sooner rather than later.Lockheed Martin (LMT)Source: Ken Wolter / Shutterstock.comThe largest U.S. defense contractor, Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) seems like a surefire winner. While there is risk to the investment from cuts to military spending, Defense Dept. budgets rarely see actual spending decline. Itโs just the rate of growth thatโs often cut.Lockheed Martin generated $66 billion in sales in 2022, virtually all of it from government contracts. Approximately three quarters of its business is with the U.S. government; some 26% is with international customers.Thatโs not to say Lockheed is without risk. The F-35 fighter jet is Lockheedโs biggest program, accounting for 27% of total sales last year. If Congress cuts the program or diverts money from it to other military priorities, it could obviously have an adverse impact on the contractorโs performance.Because Lockheed is involved in some of the most critical weapons systems designed today, the prospects for growth are enormous.Among its many programs, Lockheed contributes to the Patriot missile defense system, the Apache helicopter weapons-targeting system, the Javelin anti-tank missile program, building Black Hawk and other Sikorsky helicopters, the U.S. Navyโs Aegis air and missile defense systems, the Trident intercontinental ballistic missiles, and more.ย There are many valid critiques of U.S. military spending and priorities. There also seems little will in Washington to fundamentally alter the trajectory the current programs are on. That makes Lockheed Martin a solid investment choice for today and tomorrow.MercadoLibre (MELI)Source: rafapress / Shutterstock.comMercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI) is often referred to as the Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) of Latin America. It wholly focuses on e-commerce and fintech solutions in South and Central America. Growth seems unstoppable.ย Between 2017 and 2022, revenue grew from $1.4 billion to $9.4 billion. Thatโs a compounded annual growth rate of over 46%. Gross merchandise volume grew at a CAGR of 24% over the same time period while total payment volume surged 42% annually. Growth rates are accelerating this year.Analysts forecast Latin Americaโs e-commerce growth to rise 24% annually through 2030. In comparison, the more mature U.S. e-commerce is stalling at just a 14% or 15% share of the overall retail market. The experts say online retail is now in โslow growth mode.โWhile the hot Latin American market is attracting more competition (Alibaba and others are moving in) MercadoLibre will capture the bulk of the trade because of its first-mover status. The fintech trade is growing even faster. Financial technology is forecast to be a global $1.5 trillion industry by 2030. Latin Americaโs CAGR is pegged at 29%.MercadoLibreโs Mercado Pago payments platform is dominant in the region, preventing the likes of Amazon orย Sea Limitedโs (NYSE:SE) Shopee from gaining much share.Look for MercadoLibre itself to continue own the market and continue growing in the future.Microsoft (MSFT)Source: NYCStock / Shutterstock.comTech giant Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is a cash printing machine for investors. Over the past 10 years, the company generated a total return of over 1,000% compared to 230% for the S&P 500.A $10,000 investment in 2013 would be worth more than $117,000 today. You would have just $33,000 buying the benchmark index.Itโs one of the reasons Microsoft is considered one of the Magnificent 7 stocks. They are the seven companies propelling the S&P 500 into bull market territory. The driving force behind Microsoftโs out performance is really three-fold.Although PC sales are declining (Windows OEM licensing revenue dropped 25% last year) it still generated $21.5 billion in revenue. It also still carries enormous gross margins for Microsoft.Windows also drives commercial sales growth (that revenue jumped 5% in fiscal 2023), powers its cloud computing business, and will be behind its artificial intelligence services it develops. Itโs a huge brand opportunity.Speaking of the cloud, Microsoft Azure is the second largest cloud service provider behind Amazonโs AWS. It owns a 22% share of the market, well ahead of No. 3 Google at 10%.Financially, Microsoft is tops. The company has $111 billion in cash, equivalents, and short-term investments with long-term debt of only $42 billion. It generated free cash flow of around $60 billion a year and is as solid a business as you could want.On the date of publication, Rich Duprey did not hold (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article. Meta Platforms

Meta Platforms (META) is a social media behemoth that owns the social media site Facebook, chat program WhatsApp, and picture and video-sharing site Instagram. The company saw a surge in the number of users during the pandemic as digitalization and border closures pushed more people to communicate with one another via social media. Although growth has since normalized, CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared 2023 a "Year of Efficiency" as the company refocuses on profitability. This focus is showing in Meta Platforms' financial numbers as its second quarter of 2023 saw the company posting 11% year-over-year revenue growth to $32 billion, along with a 16% year-over-year jump in net income to $7.8 billion.ย

If you thought that Meta Platforms shifted its priority away from growth, then you would be wrong. Zuckerberg appears to be maintaining a good balance between growth and profitability, as evidenced by Facebook's daily and monthly active users and some of the company's other products. For starters, daily active users rose 4.9% year over year to 2.1 billion, while monthly active users recorded a 3.3% year-over-year increase to 3 billion. Its new video-sharing service Reels taps into artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver suitable content to users, with more than 200 billion Reels playing daily across both Facebook and Instagram. Monetization is accelerating for Reels, with annual revenue run-rate clocking in above $10 billion, more than triple the $3 billion last fall.

AI is also powering other monetization tools within Meta Platforms' portfolio of products through automated ads, with the latest AI Sandbox offering generative AI functions to generate backgrounds and crop images. Over at the business-to-business side, around 200 million Whatsapp Business users can now create click-to-WhatsApp ads without needing a Facebook account. These new features showcase the company's wide slate of products, including recently launched Threads, a Twitter-like service that can potentially be monetized in the future.ย

2. Lululemon

Lululemon (LULU) is the apparel brand of choice for yoga and fitness enthusiasts, with the company's patented material enjoying a cult following and strong loyalty.

Back in 2019, the company unveiled its five-year "Power of Three" strategy to double men's revenue, double digital revenue, and quadruple international revenue. The strategy was a resounding success -- Lululemon achieved all its targets earlier than anticipated. The yoga apparel specialist also posted strong revenue and net income growth over the past three fiscal years. For the fiscal years 2021 to 2023 (Lululemon has a Jan. 31 fiscal year-end), net revenue nearly doubled from $4.4 billion to $8.1 billion, while net income surged from $588.9 million to $854.8 million over the same period. Aside from this overarching target, the company once again intends to double men's revenue in 2021 within five years, double its digital revenue in the same period, and quadruple its international revenue. Lululemon will activate the same three pillars that helped it to achieve success in the first round -- product innovation by leveraging its Science of Feel, improving customer experience by building strong physical and digital connections, and expanding into new countries within Asia-Pacific and Europe, with plans to open its first stores in Spain and Italy. The company also launched a new initiative called Further, a new first-of-its-kind ultramarathon for women, to help build a larger customer base and endear more people to its brand. And in the past several years, the company's services segment has been posting strong growth, thanks to offerings like Music, TV+, and Pay. This successful history of innovation and focus on beautiful hardware and user-friendly software is exactly why Apple should remain one of the most valuable companies well into the future.ย

The powerful brand resonates with consumers, and it has created a business that seems to print money. Apple generated $111 billion of free cash flow in fiscal 2022 (ended Sept. 24). And as of July 1, the company had $166.5 billion of cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities on its balance sheet compared to $105.3 billion of debt. This financial strength means that Apple has the resources to invest in new ideas that could move the needle from a growth perspective, like augmented and virtual reality initiatives.ย

After producing a stellar return of 243% in the last five years and a 38% return this year alone (as of Aug. 14), Apple shares aren't cheap, trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 30. And that longevity has benefited the business in two ways. For starters, Nike's brand presence is unmatched. Its clothing and footwear products are in huge demand across the world, and customers are willing to pay premium prices for them. The company's quarterly gross margin has averaged 44.3% over the past five years.ย

Being successful for such a long period of time means that Nike has been forced to adapt to change in order to ensure its ultimate survival. The shift to digital and e-commerce and away from brick-and-mortar demonstrates management's ability to think about changes in consumer behavior. Nike is focused on relying less on wholesale distributors and instead leaning into its own channels.

The leadership team wants half of all revenue to eventually come from digital sales. This shouldn't be a problem considering that Nike's Consumer Direct Acceleration strategy, which started in 2020, prioritizes digitizing operations.ย

The next 20 years could look very different from the last 20. Consequently, the expansionary runway still looks to be very big, with a lot of the growth coming from China.ย

Like Apple and Nike, Starbucks' brand is the key to its success. And it will continue to play a huge part in how the company fares going forward. Starbucks has been able to sell a commoditized product at premium prices, leading to sizable growth and profitability, primarily because it has found a way to encourage consumers to spend more.ย

Starbucks' top-notch rewards program, with 31.4 million active accounts in the U.S., is incredibly valuable.
