Instead of pushing back against the recent easing of financial conditions, Powell made the same comments as he did at the November FOMC meeting and even stressed caution on overtightening.</p><p>This market has come to a point where anything that is not more hawkish than expected is dovish, leading to a big pop in the S&amp;P 500 following Powell&#39;s appearance. While Powell said almost nothing new, he didn&#39;t say enough to cause the market&#39;s recent easing of financial conditions to reverse.</p><p>It was shocking to hear because at every point before November 30, when financial conditions had eased too much, Powell would push back against the market. But this time, he didn&#39;t, and by not pushing back, he is telling the market he is okay with the recent easing of financial conditions.</p><p>The real question is why Powell would be okay with financial conditions easing. It is the exact opposite of what he has been saying about his desire to raise rates into restrictive territory.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b14e7287ef2ebde557c2c762382b6f3e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"268\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>What is even stranger than that is that the jobs data on Friday showed stronger-than-expected non-farm payroll numbers. But, wages rose by 0.6% month-over-month, the hottest reading since January 2022. They also increased by 5.1% year-over-year, while last month&#39;s numbers were all revised higher.</p><p>Meanwhile, the ISM manufacturing data was weaker than expected, suggesting the US economy is inching closer to recession. The ISM report noted that the reading of 49 indicated that the REAL GDP growth in the fourth quarter was around 0.1%.</p><p>The move in the ISM report indicates that S&amp;P 500 earnings growth could turn lower in 2023 and perhaps go negative. The relationship between the ISM manufacturing survey goes back a long time, and they, too, tend to track each other very well.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/34b4ece5032dcd46b930fc970e935b00\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"337\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>The slowing growth and higher wages suggest the recent changes in attitude from the bond market. The data suggest the economy could be very close to or is in a recession, which is likely to squeeze margins for companies and earnings. Earnings estimates do not reflect margin compression and are still pricing a lot of margin expansion.</p><p>Analysts&#39; estimates suggest that earnings in 2023 are expected to grow by around 7%, while sales are expected to rise by about 3%. Currently, analysts&#39; estimates are pricing in margin expansion in 2023. For there to be margin expansion, costs will need to be reduced; otherwise, earnings estimates are too high and need to be slashed.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c45e0b1141d0fecf0649dd89230770d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"369\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Cutting costs usually starts with letting workers go, and the best gauge for the unemployment rate may be the spread between the 10-year and 2-Year Treasury yield spread. In recent times the spread between the 10-year and 2-year yield tends to rise just before the unemployment rate starts to increase as the market anticipates the eventual rate-cutting cycle the Fed is about to embark on.</p><p>The current inversion is the deepest it has been since the early 1980s, and it tells us that unemployment is likely to stay low for some time longer. The current yield curve inversion has even stopped falling yet.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0e496080213d87b9baac15b6fab3f9aa\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"258\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>But the yield curve inversion that has started to turn higher is the 10-year minus 2-year 18-month forward curve. This forward curve tends to lead the 10-2 year nominal curve by 6 to 12 months, and currently, that forward curve has returned to a neutral level near 0% as the nominal 10-2 yield curve is trading well below the forward curve.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1859642fc4382c863b8d13598ed0c511\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"351\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>The forward curve suggests that the unemployment rate may be significantly higher over the next six months as companies look to shed the rising cost of wages as the economy slows. The data from Quant-Insight shows that the biggest drive in the recent move lower in the 10-year rate is risk aversion. To that end, the company is opening new factories; it started deliveries from its German factory on Tuesday and is expected to open its Texas factory soon. In short, Tesla is well on its way to becoming one of the largest automakers in the world.And the company has managed to distinguish itself from traditional automakers by generating high margins.TSLA profit margin (quarterly). It reported an adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) margin of 5.4% for the fourth quarter. So Tesla's profit margin in the latest quarter well exceeded that of traditional automakers.Those high margins can be attributed to several factors. The first one is high-margin services, including full self-driving (FSD) features and over-the-air software updates, which command higher profits than traditional vehicle sales. Other factors include high vertical integration, an absence of a dealer network, and low marketing expenses.Innovation is Tesla's key differentiatorDespite the high growth, at a $1 trillion market capitalization, value-focused investors are understandably wary of Tesla. But the stock has defied traditional valuation metrics so far. The big question is: Can it continue to do so?While no one can answer that question conclusively, I'm inclined toward a yes. Apart from high margins and scale, some other factors could support Tesla's valuation in the future. The top one is the automaker's FSD feature.Tesla already has nearly 60,000 vehicles in its FSD beta program. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the vision-only FSD version in certain Tesla models a score of \"superior\" in collision avoidance and has given it a Top Safety Pick+, the highest possible rating.The company could have significant potential to expand its margins if its FSD feature shapes up as the company is hoping. Though there are other companies working on autonomous driving -- such as Alphabet with its Waymo and General Motors with its Cruise -- Tesla could have an edge. With the large number of vehicles in use, it could have vastly more data to train its program than its competitors have. And FSD features developed in-house will again tap into the benefits of vertical integration. It could even offer the feature for a fee to other automakers. But this is just speculation and may not turn out as expected.Though it could be difficult to imagine what Tesla will do next, its growth hinges on innovation. As the company's sales rise, its profits should increase proportionally, if the company maintains its margins. When that happens, Tesla stock's current valuation will start to make sense in retrospect. That's because the stock price will have likely risen more, making valuation incomprehensible again at that point in future!In short, while Tesla stock might not generate the 10-bagger returns it did in the past two years, it looks well positioned to generate market-beating returns in the years to come. That means U.S. small-cap stocks often have exposure only to the U.S. economy.</p>\n<p>It's therefore troubling to see the<b>Russell 2000 Index</b>fall sharply over the past week. Looking back over the past week, even as the major large-cap indexes have stayed in a tight range, varying from being up slightly to down around 1%, the Russell has seen a big drop of nearly 6%. Higher borrowing costs could divert capital away from growth efforts at exactly the worst possible time.</p>\n<p>Some of the downward move also relates to the heavier concentration of energy stocks among small-caps. The ISM report noted that the reading of 49 indicated that the REAL GDP growth in the fourth quarter was around 0.1%.</p><p>The move in the ISM report indicates that S&amp;P 500 earnings growth could turn lower in 2023 and perhaps go negative. In recent times the spread between the 10-year and 2-year yield tends to rise just before the unemployment rate starts to increase as the market anticipates the eventual rate-cutting cycle the Fed is about to embark on.</p><p>The current inversion is the deepest it has been since the early 1980s, and it tells us that unemployment is likely to stay low for some time longer. Early Tesla investors are surely enjoying the stock's dramatic rise. But if you are among the ones who missed investing earlier, you must be wondering if it is already too late to invest in the electric vehicle (EV) pioneer.Let's discuss if it still makes sense to buy the stock.Tesla continues to growFounded in 2003, Tesla made its first annual profit, $721 million, in 2020. In 2021, the company's profit surged 665% to $5.5 billion. At the same time, its revenue grew 71% for the year. To that end, the company is opening new factories; it started deliveries from its German factory on Tuesday and is expected to open its Texas factory soon. In short, Tesla is well on its way to becoming one of the largest automakers in the world.And the company has managed to distinguish itself from traditional automakers by generating high margins.TSLA profit margin (quarterly). It reported an adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) margin of 5.4% for the fourth quarter. So Tesla's profit margin in the latest quarter well exceeded that of traditional automakers.Those high margins can be attributed to several factors. The first one is high-margin services, including full self-driving (FSD) features and over-the-air software updates, which command higher profits than traditional vehicle sales. Other factors include high vertical integration, an absence of a dealer network, and low marketing expenses.Innovation is Tesla's key differentiatorDespite the high growth, at a $1 trillion market capitalization, value-focused investors are understandably wary of Tesla. But the stock has defied traditional valuation metrics so far. The big question is: Can it continue to do so?While no one can answer that question conclusively, I'm inclined toward a yes. Apart from high margins and scale, some other factors could support Tesla's valuation in the future. The top one is the automaker's FSD feature.Tesla already has nearly 60,000 vehicles in its FSD beta program. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the vision-only FSD version in certain Tesla models a score of \"superior\" in collision avoidance and has given it a Top Safety Pick+, the highest possible rating.The company could have significant potential to expand its margins if its FSD feature shapes up as the company is hoping. Though there are other companies working on autonomous driving -- such as Alphabet with its Waymo and General Motors with its Cruise -- Tesla could have an edge. With the large number of vehicles in use, it could have vastly more data to train its program than its competitors have. And FSD features developed in-house will again tap into the benefits of vertical integration. It could even offer the feature for a fee to other automakers. But this is just speculation and may not turn out as expected.Though it could be difficult to imagine what Tesla will do next, its growth hinges on innovation. And the company seems to have no dearth of it so far.Should you buy Tesla stock now?Tesla's higher margins give some credibility to the reasoning that it should be valued as a technology stock.TSLA market cap. As the company's sales rise, its profits should increase proportionally, if the company maintains its margins. When that happens, Tesla stock's current valuation will start to make sense in retrospect. That's because the stock price will have likely risen more, making valuation incomprehensible again at that point in future!In short, while Tesla stock might not generate the 10-bagger returns it did in the past two years, it looks well positioned to generate market-beating returns in the years to come.
