For leisure and travel stocks like Airbnb that got slammed by pandemic shutdowns, the lifting of Covid curbs means adjusting to a whole new world.

Some tastes people acquired last year as they looked for escapes from lockdown are proving durable, like traveling to national parks by RV. Others, such as boating, grew out of surges in wealth that the stock market rally provided. As the summer travel season heats up, Americans are making new choices in where they go, when they go, how they get there and who joins them.

\"The world is never going back to the way it was,\" said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky on an earnings call in May. \"And that means that travel is never going back to the way it was either.\"

One major trend is travelers have become more flexible about when and where they go, especially as remote work allows people to blur when they are on and off the clock. Airbnb stock rose May 24, when the company updated booking features, including an option to search for listings without fixed dates or locations.

And consumers aren't the only ones changing their habits. While tourism-dependent destinations suffered last year, the less-packed streets also showed locals the benefits of quieter communities.

Residents and local officials in normally packed hot spots like Italy and Hawaii are considering limiting the number of tourists. Such a seismic change could make visiting these places prohibitively expensive for many people. If the mix of travelers tilts more heavily toward the wealthy, travel stocks will nudge further toward luxury.

Leisure, Travel Industry Stocks

Shares across the sector have rebounded from last year's pandemic lows. The stocks' recent chart action is mixed. But many travel stocks have outperformed the market the past week and could present buying opportunities for investors.

Airline stocks like American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines surged earlier this year on the Reddit stock short squeeze. Then they sold off because business and overseas travel remained weak. Since then, they've consolidated and are approaching buy points.

Cruise stocks like Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line are showing similar patterns.

Meanwhile, shares of boat makers MarineMax and Brunswick as well as RV makers Winnebago and Thor Industries need to regroup after some failed breakouts. They are no longer in buy zones but could form new bases if earnings and sales growth remain strong.

Hotel leader Marriott has been less volatile and is forming a base, though earnings and sales have yet to fully recover.

Airbnb stock has had a more difficult year. It surged after going public in December but began to slump in March as competition from Expedia rival Vrbo rental service reduced the availability of hosts. A mixed Q1 earnings report and the end of a post-IPO lockup period also weighed on Airbnb stock, which popped up 6% Thursday on higher volume but remained 35% off its 2021 high.

When Luxury Means More Privacy

Luxury travel, once the purview of only the ultrarich, may have won over those who might have had the means but not the need to travel lavishly. As travelers sought to avoid crowds during the pandemic, those with the means turned to options like private jets.

Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says the pandemic opened luxury travel to a wider customer base. \"Some people developed a taste for it, and it's likely to continue.\"

Kim-Marie Evans, who writes the blog \"Luxury Travel Moms\" and plans travel for high-net-worth clients, told IBD she booked a trip for a family to Anguilla.

They stayed in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons. And rather than flying commercially, they used a private jet service.

Private jet bookings are at or near their pre-pandemic highs, according to Elite Traveler, citing industry tracker FlightAware's data.

In May, private jet company Wheels Up said membership jumped 58% in Q1 to nearly 10,000. And VistaJet, another leading private jet company, said membership climbed 29% from a year ago.

Private jet leasing company NetJets, which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, says its flight volume dropped to as low as 10% of 2019 numbers at the start of the pandemic.

Now the company, which also offers fractional ownership of its jets, says it's operating at 85% of its 2019 volume. NetJets said in a statement that commercial airlines have reduced their schedules. Consumers also are prioritizing their health and safety, choosing the seclusion of a private jet over a packed jetliner.

Vacation Shift Favors These Travel Stocks

Hotel chains implemented stringent Covid-19 protocols to convince visitors their properties were clean and safe. Still, many travelers opted to rent private homes through Airbnb, where they could avoid mingling with strangers in hotel lobbies, Weismann says.

Travel trends favor Airbnb stock long term, though it currently is slumping. On May 27, analysts at RBC Capital Markets rated shares at outperform, citing secular tailwinds that have yet to be fully appreciated by the market such as its dominant customer engagement.

The pandemic also shed light on the market potential of travel stocks like Marriott, which operates home-rental service Homes & Villas by Marriott International, catering to ultra premium short- and long-term stays, CFRA Research analyst Tuna Amobi says.

The Homes & Villas platform, which offers professionally managed private homes, had around 2,000 units at launch less than two years ago. Today, it lists nearly 25,000 properties.

\"They're where we don't have hotels, and many of them are in more remote locations, which really was quite attractive during Covid,\" said Marriott International President Stephanie Linnartz in a recent call with investors.

Airbnb also finds that customers are visiting smaller cities, towns and rural communities โ not the same 20-30 cities that were most popular pre-pandemic. People are traveling outside the peak seasons and staying longer.

\"There is a mass shift from mass travel to meaningful travel,\" CEO Chesky said.

Seaworthy Travel Stocks

Luxury cruising should also come back with a bang. Nearly every cruise line's around-the-world luxury voyage is fully booked two years in advance.

One cruise line, Silversea, said its 139-day around-the-world cruise sold out in a single day. The Monaco-based cruise line is owned by Royal Caribbean. The cruise costs between $74,000 and $278,000 per guest, based on double occupancy. That compares with typical fares that start at $15,000-$20,000.

But others heading out to sea want to avoid crowded ships, which have seen outbreaks of coronavirus and other infections. The National Marine Manufacturers Association says new powerboat sales surged 34% in February compared to the same time period last year.

\"Inventory levels of new boats are the leanest they've ever been, and boats are being sold as soon as they hit the marketplace as manufacturers work to fulfill the backlog of orders,\" said Vicky Yu, senior director of business intelligence for NMMA. \"While new boat sales slowed in early 2021 following record sales last year, we are still seeing elevated levels as more Americans seek out boating as a way to spend quality time with loved ones.\"

The trend has pushed up leisure and travel stocks like boat retailers MarineMax and Brunswick as well as sport boat maker Malibu Boats.

\"It's really turning out to be a great alternative for people to stay close to home and with their family and friends and enjoy the boating lifestyle,\" MarineMax CFO Michael McLamb said in a conference call after reporting earnings April 22.

Travel Stocks For Being Alone Together

The desire to spend more time with friends and family is also spurring RV sales. They exploded in popularity during the pandemic, and sales data this year show demand remains high.

\"The rediscovery of America will continue this summer,\" Weissman said.

The pandemic accelerated long-term trends favoring the outdoors, Winnebago CEO Michael Happe said in a March earnings call. That includes power sports, boating and RVs.

Consumer priorities have changed, he added, toward a desire to invest in experiences vs. possessions.

\"We also believe the time (spent) recently with family and friends has reinforced that they'd like to do more of that in the future,\" Happe said. \"And families and individuals will be reevaluating how they spend their leisure time going forward.\"

Airbnb pointed to another sign of this trend among leisure and travel stocks. Instead of booking studio apartments in cities, more customers are booking entire homes with more bedrooms. As a result, the number of guests per reservation has increased.

Work-Life Rebalance

As people pay closer attention to their well-being post-Covid, another trend to watch is high-end wellness tourism with a focus on fitness, rejuvenation and health, Weissman says. That includes yoga and spa getaways as well as packages that offer cycling and hiking activities.

Meanwhile, the work-from-home shift allowed people to rethink other aspects of their lifestyle. In particular, they can try to balance work, leisure and travel differently.

Wedbush analyst James Hardiman says \"2020 was proof of concept that people can be productive, even more productive, while working remotely.\"

Airbnb says the share of bookings longer than 28 days jumped to 24% in Q1 from 14% in 2019. The company doesn't consider this travel.

\"People are not just traveling on Airbnb,\" Chesky said. \"They're now living on Airbnb.\"

Future Of Business Travel?

That also has implications for business travel, which is the most lucrative segment for travel stocks like airlines.

Experts say fewer workers may fly for one-day intracompany meetings. However, more crucial business will still require people to fly for in-person meetings.

When it's time to show up in person, Airbnb expects workers will travel together more often. That trend also has ramifications for Airbnb stock and others. Employees who work in different cities might stay in one house when they visit headquarters. They could share meals together at the kitchen table in the morning or evening.

That may be a welcome change for road warriors, who pop in an out of cities and squeeze in sightseeing along the way.

\"They don't miss business travel,\" Chesky said. \"They don't miss standing in line in front of a museum or a landmark โฆ getting a photo with a selfie stick.\"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Pandemic May Have Changed Vacations โ And Travel Stocks Like Airbnb, Marriott, Winnebago โ Forever
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe Pandemic May Have Changed Vacations โ And Travel Stocks Like Airbnb, Marriott, Winnebago โ Forever\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Investors
\n
2021-05-28 23:30
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
Your next vacation will likely be more private, luxurious or family oriented than your trips in the past, and business trips may never be the same. As the summer travel season heats up, Americans are making new choices in where they go, when they go, how they get there and who joins them.\"The world is never going back to the way it was,\" said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky on an earnings call in May. \"And that means that travel is never going back to the way it was either.\"One major trend is travelers have become more flexible about when and where they go, especially as remote work allows people to blur when they are on and off the clock. Airbnb stock rose May 24, when the company updated booking features, including an option to search for listings without fixed dates or locations. And consumers aren't the only ones changing their habits. While tourism-dependent destinations suffered last year, the less-packed streets also showed locals the benefits of quieter communities.Residents and local officials in normally packed hot spots like Italy and Hawaii are considering limiting the number of tourists. Such a seismic change could make visiting these places prohibitively expensive for many people. If the mix of travelers tilts more heavily toward the wealthy, travel stocks will nudge further toward luxury.Leisure, Travel Industry StocksShares across the sector have rebounded from last year's pandemic lows. The stocks' recent chart action is mixed. But many travel stocks have outperformed the market the past week and could present buying opportunities for investors.Airline stocksย like American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines surged earlier this year on the Reddit stock short squeeze. Then they sold off because business and overseas travel remained weak. Since then, they've consolidated and are approaching buy points.Cruise stocks like Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line are showing similar patterns.Meanwhile, shares of boat makers MarineMax and Brunswick as well as RV makers Winnebago and Thor Industries need to regroup after some failed breakouts. They are no longer in buy zones but could form new bases if earnings and sales growth remain strong.Hotel leader Marriott has been less volatile and is forming a base, though earnings and sales have yet to fully recover.Airbnb stock has had a more difficult year. When Luxury Means More PrivacyLuxury travel, once the purview of only the ultrarich, may have won over those who might have had the means but not the need to travel lavishly. As travelers sought to avoid crowds during the pandemic, those with the means turned to options like private jets.Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says the pandemic opened luxury travel to a wider customer base. \"Some people developed a taste for it, and it's likely to continue.\"Kim-Marie Evans, who writes the blog \"Luxury Travel Moms\" and plans travel for high-net-worth clients, told IBD she booked a trip for a family to Anguilla. They stayed in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons. And rather than flying commercially, they used a private jet service.Private jet bookings are at or near their pre-pandemic highs, according to Elite Traveler, citing industry tracker FlightAware's data.In May, private jet company Wheels Up said membership jumped 58% in Q1 to nearly 10,000. And VistaJet, another leading private jet company, said membership climbed 29% from a year ago.Private jet leasing company NetJets, which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, says its flight volume dropped to as low as 10% of 2019 numbers at the start of the pandemic. Now the company, which also offers fractional ownership of its jets, says it's operating at 85% of its 2019 volume. NetJets said in a statement that commercial airlines have reduced their schedules. Consumers also are prioritizing their health and safety, choosing the seclusion of a private jet over a packed jetliner.Vacation Shift Favors These Travel StocksHotel chains implemented stringent Covid-19 protocols to convince visitors their properties were clean and safe. Still, many travelers opted to rent private homes through Airbnb, where they could avoid mingling with strangers in hotel lobbies, Weismann says.Travel trends favor Airbnb stock long term, though it currently is slumping. Today, it lists nearly 25,000 properties.\"They're where we don't have hotels, and many of them are in more remote locations, which really was quite attractive during Covid,\" said Marriott International President Stephanie Linnartz in a recent call with investors.Airbnb also finds that customers are visiting smaller cities, towns and rural communities โ not the same 20-30 cities that were most popular pre-pandemic. People are traveling outside the peak seasons and staying longer.\"There is a mass shift from mass travel to meaningful travel,\" CEO Chesky said.Seaworthy Travel Stocks Luxury cruising should also come back with a bang. That compares with typical fares that start at $15,000-$20,000.But others heading out to sea want to avoid crowded ships, which have seen outbreaks of coronavirus and other infections. The National Marine Manufacturers Association says new powerboat sales surged 34% in February compared to the same time period last year.\"Inventory levels of new boats are the leanest they've ever been, and boats are being sold as soon as they hit the marketplace as manufacturers work to fulfill the backlog of orders,\" said Vicky Yu, senior director of business intelligence for NMMA. \"While new boat sales slowed in early 2021 following record sales last year, we are still seeing elevated levels as more Americans seek out boating as a way to spend quality time with loved ones.\"The trend has pushed up leisure and travel stocks like boat retailers MarineMax and Brunswickย as well as sport boat maker Malibu Boats.\"It's really turning out to be a great alternative for people to stay close to home and with their family and friends and enjoy the boating lifestyle,\" MarineMax CFO Michael McLamb said in a conference call after reporting earnings April 22.Travel Stocks For Being Alone TogetherThe desire to spend more time with friends and family is also spurring RV sales. They exploded in popularity during the pandemic, and sales data this year show demand remains high.\"The rediscovery of America will continue this summer,\" Weissman said. The pandemic accelerated long-term trends favoring the outdoors, Winnebago CEO Michael Happe said in a March earnings call. That includes power sports, boating and RVs.Consumer priorities have changed, he added, toward a desire to invest in experiences vs. possessions.\"We also believe the time (spent) recently with family and friends has reinforced that they'd like to do more of that in the future,\" Happe said. \"And families and individuals will be reevaluating how they spend their leisure time going forward.\"Airbnb pointed to another sign of this trend among leisure and travel stocks. Instead of booking studio apartments in cities, more customers are booking entire homes with more bedrooms. As a result, the number of guests per reservation has increased.Work-Life RebalanceAs people pay closer attention to their well-being post-Covid, another trend to watch is high-end wellness tourism with a focus on fitness, rejuvenation and health, Weissman says. That includes yoga and spa getaways as well as packages that offer cycling and hiking activities.Meanwhile, the work-from-home shift allowed people to rethink other aspects of their lifestyle. In particular, they can try to balance work, leisure and travel differently.Wedbush analyst James Hardiman says \"2020 was proof of concept that people can be productive, even more productive, while working remotely.\"Airbnb says the share of bookings longer than 28 days jumped to 24% in Q1 from 14% in 2019. The company doesn't consider this travel.\"People are not just traveling on Airbnb,\" Chesky said. \"They're now living on Airbnb.\"Future Of Business Travel? That also has implications for business travel, which is the most lucrative segment for travel stocks like airlines.Experts say fewer workers may fly for one-day intracompany meetings. That may be a welcome change for road warriors, who pop in an out of cities and squeeze in sightseeing along the way.\"They don't miss business travel,\" Chesky said. \"They don't miss standing in line in front of a museum or a landmark โฆ getting a photo with a selfie stick.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":61,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3575378956741249","authorId":"3575378956741249","name":"Kiattt","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/e6d09fa1316db5994a40917a273216eb","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1},"content":"Done. The movie theater chain has pivoted back to an offensive strategy on a bet that its retail investors will stick with the company long enough for it to recoup its pandemic losses. For months, new fans of the stock, who call themselves โapes,โ have been threatening analysts who have suggested that AMCโs stock is overvalued. The apes have remained bullish on traditionally heavily shorted stocks and have used their growing numbers to make waves on Wall Street. Some have verbally assaulted the analysts, who have been warning that the debt-burdened company could ultimately go bankrupt, rendering the stock worthless.Last week, AMC shares spiked more than 116% from Monday to Friday, closing at $26.12. The stock has surged more than 1,100% since January. But rather than seeing thestrong Memorial Day weekend box-office performanceas a signal that it could get its finances back on track or focus on paying down its massive debt, the company said it would double down on future investments. In doing so, AMCโs management is making a risky bet that these retail investors will continue to prop up the company.Shares of the stock surged Tuesdayafter the theater chain sold more than 8 million shares to Mudrick Capital Management. AMC said in a securities filing that it raised $230.5 million through the stock sale and would use those funds for potential acquisitions, upgrading its theaters and deleveraging its balance sheet. Mudrick alsoinvested in AMC in December. On Tuesday, Bloomberg reportedthat the firm had sold off all its shares.Representatives for Mudrick did not immediately respond to CNBCโs request for comment.โGiven our scale, experience and commitment to innovation and excellence, AMC is being presented with highly attractive theatre acquisition opportunities. We are in discussions, for example, with multiple landlords of superb theatres formerly operated byย Arclight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres,โ said CEO Adam Aron in the filing. In pre-Covid times, AMC focused heavily on growing its footprint and upgrading its theaters in order to generate revenue. But many would have expected the pandemic to have changed its position. The health crisis shuttered theaters for months. With no money coming in from ticket sales and concessions, AMC fell behind on its rent. It had to scurry to raise money just to get by. AMC had been on the brink, which drew in short sellers, who doubted the company would weather the storm. But it did, partially because of the apes, who swooped in and drove up the stock price. That allowed Aron to capitalize on the interest in the stock to raise funds. Tuesdayโs announcement shows heโs not flinching from being opportunistic again.Other companies in AMCโs situation would make debt repayment its top priority for the next year. But instead Aronโs turning back to M&A, which is how the company became the nationโs largest theater chain. Aron added Carmike, Odeon and Nordic shortly after taking the role of CEO in 2015.โThe retail investors seem to have an agenda, which is to keep AMC alive, while sticking it to the hedge funds, and hopefully make a lot of money in the process,โ said one Wall Street analyst, who asked not to be named. โThey want to democratize the stock market, and remove power from the wealthy.โAnd so far, the strategy is working. Short sellers areestimated to have lost $1.23 billion in AMC last week. The biggest question is: How long can it last? AMCโs bet is that the retail investors will stay interested in the stock long enough for its business to stabilize.Wall Street analysts have described these new investors as uneducated and emotional. Since the January stock surge, some have used social media to attack anyone who shares negative opinions of AMC. In particular, analysts who have โsellโ ratings or suggested AMCโs stock is overvalued have been fending off Twitter attacks and angry phone calls to their offices. These remarks have gone beyond mere criticism. In some cases, police have been notified about threats. CNBC has reviewed hundreds of messages sent to analysts that contain harassing language and graphic images.Representatives for AMC did not immediately respond to CNBCโs request for comment.Rise of the AMC โapesโRich Greenfield, partner at LightShed, a technology, media and telecommunications research firm, has borne the brunt of the ire both publicly on Twitter and Reddit forums and through private messages, phone calls and emails.โI hope you go bankrupt you self-serving little b----,โ one AMC investor messaged Greenfield.โIโm increasing my position by $10k tomorrow just because I donโt like Rich Greenfieldโs face,โ another wrote on Reddit last Tuesday. In another message shared with CNBC, an AMC investor sent Greenfield a photo of a gorilla having sex with another gorilla that had Greenfieldโs face photoshopped on it.To be sure, not all AMC retail investors are participating in this campaign. Many have discouraged this behavior, calling on those who are harassing analysts to stop. However, the continued deluge of messages has led Greenfield to involve the police and to make his account private.โItโs one thing to disagree and say โyou are wrong,โโ Greenfield said. โItโs another thing to attack everything about you.โThese messages are a response to Greenfieldโs March downgrade of AMC in which he gave a 12-month price target of just 1 cent.โIt will never generate cash again,โ Greenfield said on CNBCโs โSquawk Boxโ on Friday. โThatโs why we have a one-penny price target is that this company is headed for bankruptcy. The only choice it has is to issue hundreds of millions of shares.โOn Tuesday, AMC warned investors that the issuance of more shares is a strong possibility in the future. Each time AMC issues more stock, the value of current shares is diluted.CNBC reached out to a number of analysts who cover AMC and many refused to comment out of fear of repercussions from these retail investors. Some indicated that they had already received phone calls, emails and other messages in response to previous downgrades of the stock.โI would prefer to not comment for this article,โ one wrote in an email to CNBC. โSorry. I have no desire to engage in a war of words or mathematical analysis with the โapesโ ... And itโs not like anyone is going to change their minds. No flexibility in their line of thought.โThe apes have been emboldened by Aronโs support. During an earnings call in May, Aron said, โThey own AMC.We work for them. I work for them.โAron has tailored his actions to this shareholder base. Aron and AMC both plan to donate $50,000 to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund โ a clear nod to these new investors. The company also delayed its annual shareholders meeting by more than a month in order to give these investors an opportunity to attend the event and โmake their important voices heard.โAMC also has shifted its communication style to speak directly with shareholders via social media, including YouTube. Aron has taken a renewed interest in Twitter, โfollowingโ hundreds of accounts tied to the โape army.โAMC vs. the cinema industryIn his March note, Greenfield reiterated his confidence in the movie theater industry but his skepticism about the future of AMC.โThe future of movie-going is not in doubt,โ he wrote. โThe future of AMC Theaters, however, is very much in doubt, with its current stock price dramatically overvalued, in our view. There is a substantial disconnect between the future of aggregate movie theater attendance and in turn AMCโs earnings power relative to its current enterprise value and over-levered capital structure.โHis price target isnโt far off from the average, although it is the lowest of the bunch. On average, AMC has a target price of $5.11, according to FactSet. That would represent a more than 80%decline from the stockโs current level.Eric Wold, senior analyst at B. Riley Securities, said landlords have proven to be very amenable when it comes to rent, allowing repayments to be deferred over the course of 10 years.Wold has had an increasingly positive view on AMC based on its balance sheet position, its new terms with landlords and improved cash flow. This is what led Wold to issue a price target of $16 in mid-May.Woldโs price target of $16 was surpassed last Tuesday, leading him to downgrade the stock from โbuyโ to โneutral.โ At that time, Wold had been the sole analyst with a buy rating, according to FactSet.โGiven that we only recently increased our [price target] from $13 to $16 on [May 14], we are moving to the sidelines with an inability to justify taking that [price target] any higher at this point,โ he wrote in a research note to investors Wednesday.Even as the domestic box office gains momentum, it could take time for AMC to reap those revenue benefits. The company is saddled with around $5 billion in debt and needed to defer $450 million in lease repayments during the pandemic. Much of its debt came from previous acquisitions and investments in upgrading its theatersโ seating, all of which was done prior to Covid-related shutdowns.Though the company ended the first quarter with $1 billion in liquidity, the most itโs ever had in its 100-year history, that cash will only keep it afloat through 2022 unless audiences return in droves to make up for months of no revenue.Analysts such as Greenfield are skeptical that AMC can return to its pre-pandemic earnings in 2022.In the first quarter of 2021, AMC posted a loss of $294.7 million before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization and reported only $148.3 million in revenue, down 84.2% from the same period a year ago. While the company will see revenue gains as more moviegoers return to cinemas, it may not reach 2019 levels in the near term or the long term.Because of this, analysts are growing concerned that the companyโs valuation continues to rise. On the last day of 2019, AMC had an enterprise value of $5.8 billion. On Tuesday, that value stood at around $16.7 billion. The companyโs enterprise-value-to-EBITDA ratio has risen from a multiple of 7.6 times at the end of 2019 to a multiple of 25 times, Greenfield said Friday.โThis is now one of the most expensive stocks in the entire media universe,โ he said. For comparison,Discovery, which recently bought WarnerMedia fromAT&T, trades at a multiple of 9.1 times its EBITDA,ViacomCBStrades at 8.5 times, andComcasttrades at 9.4 times.AMC noted in its securities filing Tuesday that one risk factor for investors is that the stock could be considered overvalued.โOur market capitalization, as implied by various trading prices, currently reflects valuations that diverge significantly from those seen prior to recent volatility and that are significantly higher than our market capitalization immediately prior to the COVID-19 pandemic,โ AMC executives said in Tuesdayโs SEC filing.โAnd to the extent these valuations reflect trading dynamics unrelated to our financial performance or prospects, purchasers of our Class A common stock could incur substantial losses if there are declines in market prices driven by a return to earlier valuations,โ the filing said. This is all before the company makes any other big bets, such as an acquisition โ which can be a risky bet even in the best of circumstances.AMC is currently looking atDecurionโs Pacific Theatre and ArcLight Cinema chains.Decurion said in April that the two chainsโ combined 300 screens would not reopen after being shuttered during the pandemic. At that time, the company did not detail the reasons behind its decision to remain closed but did say that it had โexhausted all potential optionsโ and that it doesnโt have a โviable way forward.โItโs unclear if AMC will seek to purchase all of Decurionโs theater locations or only specific venues, such as the iconic Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles. When Decurion first announced that these locations were closing, many observers speculated that another movie chain would swoop in to buy out the properties but didnโt expect AMC to be a top contender.Still, AMC has defied skeptics before. It has stayed out of bankruptcy court by raising money and was able to repay some of its debt thanks to stock boosts from new investors.Of course, this investor frenzy is uncharted territory for the company. Even the success of other companies, such as GameStop, that have been bolstered by these kinds of retail investors arenโt a true comparison.GameStop has been able to overhaul its management team and raise money to invest in modernizing its business, potentially giving it new life. It has also been able to eliminate its long-term debt, something that AMC will continue to struggle with going forward.Itโs why most Wall Street pros say AMCโs apes are taking such a big risk.AMCโs new retail investors, who numberย 3.2 million, own about 80% of the companyโs 450 million outstanding shares as of March 11, AMC reported earlier this month. The cryptocurrency uses more energy than entire countries such as Sweden and Malaysia, according to theย Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.\nTo understand why bitcoin is so energy-intensive, you have to look at its underlying technology, the blockchain.\nBitcoin's public ledger is decentralized, meaning it isn't controlled by any single authority. It's constantly being updated by a network of computers around the world.\nSo-called miners run purpose-built computers to solve complex math puzzles in order to make a transaction go through. This is the only way to mint new bitcoins.\nMiners do not run this operation for free. They have to shell out huge sums on specialized equipment. A key incentive of bitcoin's model, known as \"proof of work,\" is the promise of being rewarded in some bitcoin if you manage to solve its complex hashing algorithm.\nIt's worth noting thatdogecoin, which has risen wildly in price lately on the back of support from Musk, also uses a proof-of-work mechanism.\nCarol Alexander, a professor at the University of Sussex Business School, explains that bitcoin's mining \"difficulty\" โ a measure of the computational effort it takes to mineย bitcoin โ has been going \"up and up\" over the last three years.\n\"More and more electricity is being used,\" Alexander told CNBC. \"That means that the network difficulty will also be going up (and) more miners are coming in because the hash rate's going up.\"\nBitcoin's price is up almost 70% so far this year. As it goes up in price,ย the revenue to miners also increases, incentivizing more participants to mine the cryptocurrency.\nMeanwhile, Musk isn't the only one who's worried about the environmental impact of bitcoin. In February, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the digital coin is \"extremely inefficient\" for making transactions and uses a \"staggering\" amount of power.\nDoes bitcoin actually harm the environment?\nIt's complicated. On the one hand, bitcoin's network uses anunfathomable amount of energy. Much of the mining of bitcoin is concentrated in China, whose economy is still heavily reliant on coal.\nLast month, a coal mine in the Xinjiang region flooded and shut down. This took nearly a quarter of bitcoin's hash rate โ or computing power โ offline, according to crypto industry publicationCoinDesk.\nIn March, China's Inner Mongolia region said it wouldshut down cryptocurrency mining operationsin the region due to concerns over energy consumption.\nOn the other side of the debate, bitcoin investors have attempted to push back on the narrative that it's harmful for the environment.\nWhile it's difficult to determine the energy mix that powers bitcoin, some in the crypto industry say miners are incentivized to use renewables as it's getting cheaper to produce them. In China, the province of Sichuan is known to attract miners due to its cheap electricity and rich hydropower resources.\nLast month,Jack Dorsey'sfintech companySquareand Cathie Wood's Ark Invest put out amemoclaiming that bitcoin will actually drive renewable energy innovation. However, critics said they had avested interestin doing so.\nAlexander said the debate around bitcoin's environmental impact was misguided as most transactions with the digital asset aren't happening on the blockchain.\n\"Almost all the trading is not done on the blockchain,\" she said. \"It'sย done on secondary markets, centralized exchanges. They're not even recorded on the blockchain.\"\nESG concerns\nRegardless of whether bitcoin is actually a polluter or not, the negative connotations around its energy consumption have worried investors conscious of companies' ethical and environmental responsibilities.\nESG, or environmental, social and corporate governance, has become agrowing trendin financial markets, with portfolio managers increasingly incorporating sustainable investments into their strategies.\nSome Tesla shareholders may be worried that the company is betting big on bitcoin while also claiming to be a green energy company.\n\"Bitcoin backers will be wondering where this leaves the future of the cryptocurrency,\" Laith Khalaf, a financial analyst at investment firm AJ Bell, said in a note Thursday.\n\"Environmental matters are an incredibly sensitive subject right now, and Tesla's move might serve as a wake-up call to businesses and consumers using Bitcoin, who hadn't hitherto considered its carbon footprint,\" Khalaf added.\n\"Tesla's decision certainly puts pressure on other big companies who accept Bitcoin to review their practices, because boardrooms will now be wary about getting it in the ear from ESG investors on the shareholder register.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":285,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3570099344379608","authorId":"3570099344379608","name":"ไธ่ฝฎ่ฝฆ่ทๅพๅฟซ","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"content":"Done. Details could still change as deliberations are ongoing, the people added. A spokeswoman for the Chinese carmaker declined to comment.
\n
A listing by Xpeng would end a brief hiatus in such share sales by U.S.-listed Chinese firms with online travel firmTrip.com Ltd.the last, raising about $1.25 billion in Hong Kong in April. Many U.S.-traded Chinese companies have flocked to the Asian financial hub since it eased rules in 2018 to allow the likes of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and gaming giant NetEase Inc. to list.
\n
A listing in Hong Kong gives stateside-traded Chinese firms a foothold that acts as a hedge against the risk of being kicked off U.S. exchanges, while allowing them to broaden their investor base closer to home. Under a bill passed in the U.S., Chinese public companiescould be kicked offU.S. stock bourses if American regulators arenโt allowed to review their audits.
\n
Unlike the other homecoming listings, however, Xpengโs isnโt a secondary listing -- which would have exempted it from some of the Asian hubโs listing rules -- but a dual primary one. That is because Xpeng, which only went public in New York last year, doesnโt have the two-year listing track record required for it to merit a secondary listing in Hong Kong. Itโs set to be the biggest dual primary listing in Hong Kong since biotech drugmakerBeiGene Ltd.raised $903 million in the city almost three years ago.
\n
Xpengโs U.S. presence has already helped the EV maker raise funds. After raising $1.72 billion in its August IPO in New York it fetched another $2.5 billion from investors by placing stock in December.
\n
EV Stocks
\n
That said, Xpeng will be coming to a market less enamored of EV makers. After a blistering rally in 2020, electric car-makers have seen their shares decline this yearamidincreasing competition from legacy automakers, the global semiconductor shortage and an increasing wariness by investors about holding onto riskier assets.
\n
Xpengโs stock surged 381% from its IPO price to a high of $72.17 in November, but has since fallen about 44%, giving the Guangzhou-based company a market capitalization of around $32 billion.
\n
The carmaker also faces intense competition at home. Details could still change as deliberations are ongoing, the people added. A spokeswoman for the Chinese carmaker declined to comment.\nA listing by Xpeng would end a brief hiatus in such share sales by U.S.-listed Chinese firms with online travel firmTrip.com Ltd.the last, raising about $1.25 billion in Hong Kong in April. Many U.S.-traded Chinese companies have flocked to the Asian financial hub since it eased rules in 2018 to allow the likes of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and gaming giant NetEase Inc. to list.\nA listing in Hong Kong gives stateside-traded Chinese firms a foothold that acts as a hedge against the risk of being kicked off U.S. exchanges, while allowing them to broaden their investor base closer to home. Under a bill passed in the U.S., Chinese public companiescould be kicked offU.S. stock bourses if American regulators arenโt allowed to review their audits.\nUnlike the other homecoming listings, however, Xpengโs isnโt a secondary listing -- which would have exempted it from some of the Asian hubโs listing rules -- but a dual primary one. That is because Xpeng, which only went public in New York last year, doesnโt have the two-year listing track record required for it to merit a secondary listing in Hong Kong. Itโs set to be the biggest dual primary listing in Hong Kong since biotech drugmakerBeiGene Ltd.raised $903 million in the city almost three years ago.\nXpengโs U.S. presence has already helped the EV maker raise funds. After raising $1.72 billion in its August IPO in New York it fetched another $2.5 billion from investors by placing stock in December.\nEV Stocks\nThat said, Xpeng will be coming to a market less enamored of EV makers. After a blistering rally in 2020, electric car-makers have seen their shares decline this yearamidincreasing competition from legacy automakers, the global semiconductor shortage and an increasing wariness by investors about holding onto riskier assets.\nXpengโs stock surged 381% from its IPO price to a high of $72.17 in November, but has since fallen about 44%, giving the Guangzhou-based company a market capitalization of around $32 billion.\nThe carmaker also faces intense competition at home. Rival Chinese EV companiesNio Inc.andLi Auto Inc.-- both traded in the U.S. -- are also planning listings in Hong Kong, Bloomberg News hasreported. The trio compete in an increasingly crowded market in China -- the worldโs largest for electric-vehicles -- as tech giants, traditional automakers and startups muscle into the sector.\nXpeng has yet to turn a profit and has pledged to break even by late 2023 or 2024. That is a milestone investors who are bullish on Tesla stock have been waiting for, but it isnโt the most important one.
\n
Beginning deliveries should help the stockโ-a little.
\n
Tesla(ticker: TSLA) stock rose 4.1% amid a broad market rally Thursday, but the gain still left shares down for the week. Tesla stock was up another 0.8% in Friday trading, a touch better than the 0.7% gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The S&P 500 was up 0.5%.
\n

\n
The Plaid is billed by Tesla as the fastest production car ever, going zero to 60 in under 2 seconds. A Bugatti Chiron, which costs about $2.3 million and is equipped with a 16-cylinder, four-turbocharger engine, can go zero to 60 in about 2.3 seconds.
\n
Electric motors have better torque at zero revolutions a minute, giving drivers an incredible jolt from their initial acceleration.
\n
The Plaid edition of the Model S wonโt cost anywhere near as much as a Chiron, but it will still run buyers $120,000 or more. Prices like that mean the car wonโt sell in the high volumes seen from the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. Those cars can be had for what a nicely equipped sedan from BMW (BMW.Germany) or evenToyota Motor (TM) or Honda (HMC) can cost.
\n
Still, the launch highlights Teslaโs ability to update its designs. The first Model S went into production almost a decade ago. Its performance shows Tesla is improving on its technologies for battery management and electric motors.
\n
All that is important for perceptions about Tesla, but there are bigger things on investorsโ minds. Tesla is building new capacity in Austin, Texas, andBerlin. Investors want to see both plants on line by the end of the year, giving Tesla the output capacity needed to increase sales.
\n
Investors also want updates about the companyโs autonomous driving programs. Musk has boasted the company is close to achieving fully autonomous cars with newer versions of its self-driving software. The new versions probably wonโt mean drivers can actually leave the driver seat, but better driver-assistance functions are a competitive advantage for auto makers.
\n
The next version of the Tesla software is due to roll out in coming weeks.
\n
Capacity and autonomous driving have the potential to lift the stock in coming years. That is a milestone investors who are bullish on Tesla stock have been waiting for, but it isnโt the most important one.\nBeginning deliveries should help the stockโ-a little.\nTesla(ticker: TSLA) stock rose 4.1% amid a broad market rally Thursday, but the gain still left shares down for the week. Tesla stock was up another 0.8% in Friday trading, a touch better than the 0.7% gain in theย Dow Jones Industrial Average.Theย S&P 500ย was up 0.5%.\n\nThe Plaid is billed by Tesla as the fastest production car ever, going zero to 60 in under 2 seconds. Aย Bugatti Chiron, which costs about $2.3 million and is equipped with a 16-cylinder, four-turbocharger engine, can go zero to 60 in about 2.3 seconds.\nElectric motors have better torque at zero revolutions a minute, giving drivers an incredible jolt from their initial acceleration.\nTheย Plaid editionย of the Model S wonโt cost anywhere near as much as a Chiron, but it will still run buyers $120,000 or more. Prices like that mean the car wonโt sell in the high volumes seen from the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. Those cars can be had for what a nicely equipped sedan fromย BMWย (BMW.Germany) or evenToyota Motorย (TM) orย Hondaย (HMC) can cost.\nStill, the launch highlights Teslaโs ability to update its designs. The first Model S went into production almost a decade ago. Its performance shows Tesla is improving on its technologies for battery management and electric motors.\nAll that is important for perceptions about Tesla, but there are bigger things on investorsโ minds. Tesla is building new capacity in Austin, Texas, andBerlin. Investors want to see both plants on line by the end of the year, giving Tesla the output capacity needed to increase sales.\nInvestors also want updates about the companyโs autonomous driving programs. Musk has boasted the company is close toย achieving fully autonomous carsย with newer versions of its self-driving software. The new versions probably wonโt mean drivers can actually leave the driver seat, but better driver-assistance functions are a competitive advantage for auto makers.\nThe next version of the Tesla software is due to roll out in coming weeks.\nCapacity and autonomous driving have the potential to lift the stock in coming years. The Model S Plaid can help it in coming quarters.\nTesla stock is in need of a lift. Shares are down about 35% from their 52-week high of more than $900, reached in January.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":95,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":112543489,"gmtCreate":1622892474241,"gmtModify":1704193058825,"author":{"id":"3577755113015461","authorId":"3577755113015461","name":"Romanliu","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/919350aa2daceaa6a1cad56ff38b268e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like and comment. That compares to shockingly large estimated increases in industrial sector profits of more than 570%, and energy industry profits, up 220%. Earnings for the financial and materials sectors are expected to be up more than 100% each.\nThose huge gains and expected earnings beats should be a positive for some cyclical stocks this quarter. Earnings season kicks off Tuesday with reports fromJPMorgan Chase,Goldman Sachs,andPepsiCo.\nThis earnings season will be the period where the tug of war thatโs been a factor in the stock market, between cyclical and growth trades, is due to play out very clearly in the earnings numbers. Inflationary pressures, negative for tech stock performance, are expected to help boost cyclical earnings growth in the rebound, as companies face rising input costs but also up their prices.\nโI think what youโre going to see is a very unusual kind of contradiction between the data and the narrative,โ said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at Credit Suisse. โWhat companies are going to say is they are facing shortages and rising input costs and other things which are constraints to their success. And then what youโre going to see is massive beats and the biggest portions coming from higher margins. Theyโre not going to try to reconcile it.โ\nGolub expects companies to provide detail on rising costs and supply shortages but not as much information on how much they are raising prices or how broadly.\nโIf you listen to what the CFOs are going to say, youโre going to think the earnings are terrible, but if you look at the results, theyโre going to be magnificent,โ he said.\nBut ultimately, itโs tech and growth that will prove to be the best performers profit-wise over the long haul. โTheir own earnings revisions for themselves are still good. Theyโre not deteriorating. Theyโre solid. Theyโre not getting worse. Theyโre not accelerating in this ridiculous way. Theyโre on the same solid trajectory theyโve been on,โ said Brian Rauscher, Fundstrat head of global portfolio strategy.\nRauscher expects the trend to revert back to tech as the better earnings performer in two quarters from now, when cyclical airline stocks or industrial stocks like Caterpillar will see earnings growth back in the single digits. โTech will keep growing at 25%,โ he said.\nHe says economic growth will have slowed to a more normalized and sustained pace. By then it will be more apparent whether inflation is temporary or not.\nโIf they are unable to pass along price increases, it will hit the earnings,โ he said.\nGolub points out that tech profits in last yearโs second quarter actually increased by 3.3% from 2019, as cyclical earnings plunged 85% in the same period. The 2021 second quarter earnings growth estimate for tech is 34.2%, while some cyclical earnings will rebound by more than 570% just to get back to even with 2019.\nโIt says one of these is a near term trade, and one of them is a long term trade,โ said Golub. โOnce the supply chain issues are gone, [cyclicals] are going to be unimpressive.โ\nEven with the push pull of tech and growth versus cyclical trades, strategists say the earning season should be good for the stock market.\nโI think the numbers will be very good, and itโll be supportive for markets,โ said Rauscher. He said some investors may be concerned that a peak period of earnings this quarter will lead to a market decline but he doesnโt expect that to be the case.\nโObviously, the numbers are going to be outsized because we have that weird comparison from last year. I think the important thing is going to be the return of guidance,โ Rauscher said. Both he and Golub say they expect earnings to beat to the upside.\nโI think the analysts have underestimated the improvement in operating leverage,โ Rauscher said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":234,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":183048967,"gmtCreate":1623296634859,"gmtModify":1704200326712,"author":{"id":"3577755113015461","authorId":"3577755113015461","name":"Romanliu","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/919350aa2daceaa6a1cad56ff38b268e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like and comment, thanks","listText":"Please like and comment, thanks","text":"Please like and comment, thanks","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/183048967","repostId":"1142408805","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1142408805","pubTimestamp":1623280126,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1142408805?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-10 07:08","market":"us","language":"en","title":"U.S. stocks end lower ahead of inflation report","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1142408805","media":"reuters","summary":"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street ended a see-saw session lower on Wednesday as market participants a","content":"
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street ended a see-saw session lower on Wednesday as market participants awaited inflation data for clues as to when the U.S. Federal Reserve might tighten its dovish monetary policy.
\n
The retail โmeme stockโ craze continued unabated.
\n
All three major U.S. stock indexes reversed earlier gains, but remained range-bound in the absence of any clear market catalysts.
\n
โThereโs a lull period in terms of news,โ said Chuck Carlson, chief executive at Horizon Investment Services in Hammond, Indiana. โWeโre through earnings period and people are waiting for inflation numbers tomorrow, so you have a mixed market where the major averages arenโt doing much of anything.โ
\n
Heavily shorted meme stocks extended their social media-driven rally, with Aethlon Medical soaring 388.2%.
\n
Reddit chatter also helped to lift shares of prison operator GEO Group and World Wrestling Entertainment 38.4% and 10.9%, respectively.
\n
However, other meme stocks such as Clover Health, AMC Entertainment and Bed Bath & Beyond closed lower.
\n
Retail volume has returned to its January peak, according to Vanda Research, as social media forums scramble to identify the next GameStop Corp, the stock that kicked off the phenomenon.
\n
โIt feels like alternative stock market,โ Carlson added.
