the S&P 500 gained 0.74 points, or 0.02%, at 4,227.26; and the Nasdaq Composite added 43.19 points, or 0.31%, at 13,924.91.Of the 11 major sectors in the S&P 500, consumer discretionary enjoyed the biggest percentage gain, and utilities suffered the largest loss.Sales of Tesla Inc’s China-made electric cars jumped in May by 29%, marking a 177% year-on-year increase, according to the China Passenger Car Association. The stock erased initial gains on the news to close down 0.3%.Boeing Co shares were boosted by Southwest Airlines’ announcement that it had ordered 34 new 737 MAX aircraft, but the planemaker’s shares pared gains to end the session flat.GameStop, the company most closely associated with the Reddit-driven short squeeze phenomenon, is expected to report quarterly results after markets close on Wednesday.Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by a 1.74-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.66-to-1 ratio favored advancers.The S&P 500 posted 54 new 52-week highs and one new low; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 172 new highs and 16 new lows.Volume on U.S. exchanges was 11.82 billion shares, compared with the 10.75 billion average over the last 20 trading days.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"CLOV":0.9,".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":630,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":133341467,"gmtCreate":1621718603059,"gmtModify":1704361630321,"author":{"id":"3581591015314710","authorId":"3581591015314710","name":"Ljoney","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8376cac12c1b661feac4d507eb1379e4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581591015314710","idStr":"3581591015314710"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice, like j comment","listText":"Nice, like j comment","text":"Nice, like j comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/133341467","repostId":"1174075999","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1174075999","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1621607834,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1174075999?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-21 22:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Crypto stocks tumbled again on China's crackdown on bitcoin mining and trading","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1174075999","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Cryptocurrencies have fallen,Bitcoin fell below $38000 per coin, down 6.65% in the day;while Ethereum fell below $2500 per coin, down more than 14%.In a statement from Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and the State Council, authorities said tighter regulation is needed to protect the financial system.The statement, released late Friday in China time, said it is necessary to \"crack down on Bitcoin mining and trading behavior, and resolutely prevent the transmission of individual risks to the social fi","content":"<p>Crypto stocks tumbled again on China's crackdown on bitcoin mining and trading.</p><p>Cryptocurrencies have fallen,Bitcoin fell below $38000 per coin, down 6.65% in the day;while Ethereum fell below $2500 per coin, down more than 14%.</p><p>In a statement from Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and the State Council, authorities said tighter regulation is needed to protect the financial system.</p><p>The statement, released late Friday in China time, said it is necessary to \"crack down on Bitcoin mining and trading behavior, and resolutely prevent the transmission of individual risks to the social field.\"</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d135c4771b39f0a7bc8af9a06844785e\" tg-width=\"840\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4448bb0f18a487f50bea1c8ba9816936\" tg-width=\"414\" tg-height=\"727\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Please note the risks.</i></p><h2>Thesis</h2><p>Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) heads into its highly-anticipated FQ2'23 (quarter ended September 30) earnings release on November 17, even as it held back from reporting actual sales figures for its 2022 Singles' Day (11.11) sales event for the first time.</p><p>Alibaba reported that its 11.11 event "[delivered GMV] for brands in line with [2021] despite economic and COVID-related headwinds." Notably, Alibaba reported a gross merchandise value (GMV) of RMB540.3B for 2021's 11.11 event.</p><p>Therefore, all eyes will be on CEO Daniel Zhang & team on November 17, as Bloomberg had reported earlier that Alibaba's 11.11 event "may suffer a decline unprecedented in the event's 14-year history."</p><p>Despite that, BABA has outperformed the S&P 500 (SPX) (SP500) since we upgraded it to Strong Buy in our previous article. Moreover, BABA's recent recovery was bolstered by the anticipation of a progressive easing of COVID policy. As such, the positive reaction by the market was not surprising.</p><p>We discuss why we glean that the mean reversion move for BABA remains attractive at the current levels. Despite the massive pessimism seen as investors further de-rated China's political risks, BABA's price action remains constructive. Coupled with a well-beaten-down valuation in line with its Hong Kong tech peers, we assess that BABA's reward/risk profile remains attractive.</p><p>Maintain Strong Buy with a medium-term price target (PT) of $90.</p><h2>Refinement Of China's COVID Policy Is Good Progress</h2><p>China lifted the market's sentiments last week as the newly installed Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) highlighted the need for "more decisive" measures, as Bloomberg reported:</p><blockquote>In a meeting of the new Politburo Standing Committee, the members called for more decisive measures to curb the spread of the virus so as to resume normal life and production as soon as possible, according to the Xinhua News Agency. - Bloomberg</blockquote><p>Therefore the "20 measures" rolled out by China's State Council and National Health Commission that reduced centralized quarantine time and flight suspension penalties were not expected by the market. Moreover, it occurred while COVID cases continued rising. Bloomberg reported that China's COVID cases increased to 11.3K on Friday (November 11), breaking above 10K for the first time since April on Thursday.</p><p>Furthermore, some cities actually reduced mass testing despite the rising cases. Hence, we believe the odds for a progressive ending in COVID zero are increasingly likely.</p><p>Still, investors should not rule out Beijing tightening its COVID policy again if COVID cases continue to rise higher, or even spike. China has maintained that the recent measures do not indicate that China has moved to living with the virus. Stamping out COVID expeditiously remains the guiding principle of its policy measures. As such, investors should expect near-term downside volatility if Beijing tightens further.</p><h2>What's Next For Alibaba?</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ddc437479ec434895135417dc6411936\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"396\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Alibaba Revenue change % and Adjusted EBITDA change % consensus estimates (S&P Cap IQ)</span></p><p>Therefore, we think the thesis for a bottoming in Alibaba's revenue and profitability growth by FY23 (year ending March 2023) is increasingly likely.</p><p>China's hand has likely been forced by the worsening global macroeconomic headwinds that has added significant stress to its domestic malaise. Moreover, China's trade surplus weakened further in October as exports fell for the first time since May 2020, down 0.3% YoY.</p><p>Furthermore, China's producer price index (PPI) declined 1.3% YoY in October, down for the first time in over two years. Hence, the disinflation signals are building up in China's economy, likely spurring policymakers to act more urgently to arrest China's economic malaise.</p><p>Therefore, while Alibaba may report a relatively tepid or even lower-than-project FQ2 earnings release, the market is already looking ahead. While still early, Goldman Sachs had previously highlighted that it expected a reopening in the "second quarter of [2023]." Therefore, we believe Wall Street's estimates have been predicated on such a possibility.</p><p>Given that China has already started to set the wheels in motion, despite the surge in COVID cases, we believe the reward/risk for an earlier exit is likely pointing to the upside.</p><h2>Is BABA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b99a8e7fe43e4b72d7e31dbf093f969e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"340\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>BABA price chart (weekly) (TradingView)</span></p><p>We emphasized in our previous update that BABA has two robust support zones that could see buyers defending vigorously against further selling pressure.</p><p>Therefore, even after the market forced sellers to give up after it broke below its March lows, buyers came in to defend its October 2015 levels ($57). That level appears to have been defended resolutely, which suggests that the market pulled the rug on weak holders who added the dips in March/May 2022.</p><p>Notwithstanding, we still need BABA to retake its March level and sit above it decisively for our thesis of a mean-reversion setup toward the $95 level to play out accordingly.</p><p>With China moving progressively away from its zero COVID strategy, we believe the potential for Alibaba to outperform the markedly downgraded consensus projections is looking increasingly likely.</p><p><i>Maintain Strong Buy with a medium-term PT of $90.</i></p></body></html>","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; As such, investors should expect near-term downside volatility if Beijing tightens further.What's Next For Alibaba?Alibaba Revenue change % and Adjusted EBITDA change % consensus estimates (S&P Cap IQ)Therefore, we think the thesis for a bottoming in Alibaba's revenue and profitability growth by FY23 (year ending March 2023) is increasingly likely.China's hand has likely been forced by the worsening global macroeconomic headwinds that has added significant stress to its domestic malaise. Moreover, China's trade surplus weakened further in October as exports fell for the first time since May 2020, down 0.3% YoY.Furthermore, China's producer price index (PPI) declined 1.3% YoY in October, down for the first time in over two years. Hence, the disinflation signals are building up in China's economy, likely spurring policymakers to act more urgently to arrest China's economic malaise.Therefore, while Alibaba may report a relatively tepid or even lower-than-project FQ2 earnings release, the market is already looking ahead. While still early, Goldman Sachs had previously highlighted that it expected a reopening in the \"second quarter of [2023].\" Therefore, we believe Wall Street's estimates have been predicated on such a possibility.Given that China has already started to set the wheels in motion, despite the surge in COVID cases, we believe the reward/risk for an earlier exit is likely pointing to the upside.Is BABA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?BABA price chart (weekly) (TradingView)We emphasized in our previous update that BABA has two robust support zones that could see buyers defending vigorously against further selling pressure.Therefore, even after the market forced sellers to give up after it broke below its March lows, buyers came in to defend its October 2015 levels ($57). That level appears to have been defended resolutely, which suggests that the market pulled the rug on weak holders who added the dips in March/May 2022.Notwithstanding, we still need BABA to retake its March level and sit above it decisively for our thesis of a mean-reversion setup toward the $95 level to play out accordingly.With China moving progressively away from its zero COVID strategy, we believe the potential for Alibaba to outperform the markedly downgraded consensus projections is looking increasingly likely.Maintain Strong Buy with a medium-term PT of $90.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"09988":0.6,"BABA":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":325,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9085370875,"gmtCreate":1650665231428,"gmtModify":1676534771333,"author":{"id":"3581591015314710","authorId":"3581591015314710","name":"Ljoney","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8376cac12c1b661feac4d507eb1379e4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581591015314710","idStr":"3581591015314710"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/ZEPP\">$Zepp Health Corporation(ZEPP)$</a>Let go","listText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/ZEPP\">$Zepp Health Corporation(ZEPP)$</a>Let go","text":"$Zepp Health Corporation(ZEPP)$Let go","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8555826a7529a3ad3d2c171dcc6ba262","width":"1125","height":"2674"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9085370875","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":621,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":139291672,"gmtCreate":1621634112796,"gmtModify":1704360710124,"author":{"id":"3581591015314710","authorId":"3581591015314710","name":"Ljoney","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8376cac12c1b661feac4d507eb1379e4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581591015314710","idStr":"3581591015314710"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like n comment ","listText":"Like n comment ","text":"Like n comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/139291672","repostId":"2137906121","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":464,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3568230509761996","authorId":"3568230509761996","name":"AndreR93","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/96d3de091542c3cf445343cfbe260aeb","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3568230509761996","idStr":"3568230509761996"},"content":"Reply pls","text":"Reply pls","html":"Reply pls"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":375326453,"gmtCreate":1619310806972,"gmtModify":1704722211647,"author":{"id":"3581591015314710","authorId":"3581591015314710","name":"Ljoney","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8376cac12c1b661feac4d507eb1379e4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581591015314710","idStr":"3581591015314710"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Comment n like","listText":"Comment n like","text":"Comment n like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/375326453","repostId":"1166519043","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":463,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3565174018553243","authorId":"3565174018553243","name":"Wilsonfusion","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/6de88fd82d0cd3dde5c611b9bad2c0df","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"authorIdStr":"3565174018553243","idStr":"3565174018553243"},"content":"Done. But if you know what to expect, signs of rising prices aren't always kryptonite to your portfolio. And that's if you should worry at all.</p>\n<p>It turns out S&P 500 sectors follow a fairly predictable playbook in times of rising prices. If you're worried about inflation, S&P 500 sectors like energy, materials and real estate provide some safety, analysts say. \"Investors have used the threat of a spike in inflation, and now the confirmation from ... surprise strength in headline and core Consumer Price Index readings, to take profits in stocks,\" said Sam Stovall, strategist at CFRA.</p>\n<p>But knowing the facts goes a long way in dealing with any potential market shocks, including inflation.</p>\n<h3>Know The Reality In Inflation Numbers</h3>\n<p>It's important to understand what inflation numbers are truly telling you before you panic. It seems like many S&P 500 investors calmed down after digging into inflation numbers more closely. The world's most popular index jumped more than 1.2% Thursday, making up the bulk of Wednesday's 2% freak-out sell-off.</p>\n<p>At first glance, inflation numbers looked scary. The 4.2% jump in headline inflation and 3% rise in core inflation was much more than anyone thought. Core inflation hasn't jumped that fast on a year-over-year basis since 2008, Stovall says.</p>\n<p>But a big piece of the rise is due to the 21% jump in annualized used vehicle prices, says Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research. And that jump is due to new vehicle shortages arising from a shortage in semiconductors. Backing out this short-term disruption, headline inflation was a much more normal 3.6%, he says. Meanwhile, the unusual 49.6% jump in April gasoline prices added to the distortion.</p>\n<p>The inflation number \"just doesn't hold up to scrutiny as a warning bell about inflation,\" Colas said.</p>\n<h3>Understand How The S&P 500 Reacts To Inflation</h3>\n<p>Out-of-control inflation is widely feared. But times of lingering 5%-plus annual inflation are rare. Only twice since 1928 has U.S. inflation lingered: 1941 through 1951 and 1969 to 1982, Colas found.</p>\n<p>Were these periods devastating for the S&P 500? Hardly. The S&P 500 jumped 310% from 1941 to 1951, that's 121.1% adjusted for inflation, Colas found. Even in the 1969-to-1982 period, seen as a terrible time for inflation, the S&P 500 actually rose 176%. Yes, that's a loss of 11.6% adjusted for inflation, but it's hardly catastrophic especially for those who enjoyed the 1980s bull.</p>\n<p>Inflation itself doesn't steer the S&P 500. The reason for inflation matters more. Prices rose in the 1940s for \"good reasons\" like an post-war boom, Colas said. But in the 1970s, energy price hikes were largely a tax on the economy.</p>\n<p>\"Markets are volatile because they're not sure which sort of inflation we have at present, or what (if anything) the Federal Reserve may do to bring inflation down,\" Colas said. \"That's enough uncertainty to create the volatility we're seeing, but not enough to say equities will necessarily underperform inflation in the years to come.\"</p>\n<h3>Look To The 1970s For S&P 500 Clues (But Not Gospel)</h3>\n<p>S&P 500 investors like to look back at the 1970s for a playbook for inflation. And it wasn't pretty, but it's not as devastating as many think either. And there were actually places to make big gains.</p>\n<p>During the 1970s, the S&P 500 posted an average monthly loss of 0.3%, Stovall says. But over the entire period, the S&P 500 rose 17.2%. That's just 1.6% annualized, or a fraction of the S&P 500's typical 10% yearly return. S&P sectors, though, hold clues or how markets can shift, Stovall says.</p>\n<p>It turns out even during the \"bad\" inflation of the 1970s, only <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the 11 S&P 500 sectors fell on an average monthly basis. That sole loser was financials, which lost 0.8% monthly on average during the 1970s.</p>\n<p>So where where the places to be? S&P 50 energy, materials and real estate all posted average monthly gains of 1% or higher during the 1970s, Stovall says. Materials company <b>Nucor</b> gained 2,830% during the 1970s. That's more than any current S&P 500 members did at the time. Meanwhile, energy firms <b>Schlumberger</b> and <b>Baker Hughes</b> jumped 1,032% and 856%, respectively, during the 1970s.</p>\n<table>\n <thead>\n <tr>\n <th>Sector</th>\n <th>Average monthly return during the 1970s</th>\n </tr>\n </thead>\n <tbody>\n <tr>\n <td>Energy</td>\n <td>1.6%</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Materials</td>\n <td>1.4</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Real Estate</td>\n <td>1.2</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Communications Services</td>\n <td>0.9</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Information Technology</td>\n <td>0.7</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Industrials</td>\n <td>0.6</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Consumer Discretionary</td>\n <td>0.3</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Utilities</td>\n <td>0.1</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Health Care</td>\n <td>0.1</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Consumer Staples</td>\n <td>0</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Financials</td>\n <td>-0.8</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>S&P 500</td>\n <td>-0.3</td>\n </tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<h5>Source: CFRA</h5>\n<h3>Don't Overlook S&P 500 Commodity Strength</h3>\n<p>Digging deeper still, Stovall found robust gains in many commodities markets, even in the inflation-plagued 1970s.</p>\n<p>Gold and precious metals companies in the S&P 500 posted average monthly gains of 3.9% in the 1970s. And aluminum companies rose 2% monthly followed by oil and gas drilling at 1.8%. And to some degree, investors are already nibbling on these areas. The Energy Select Sector SPDR is up 36.7% this year. That's the top run of any S&P 500 sector. Meanwhile, the Materials Select Sector SPDR is up 20% year to date.</p>\n<p>Know, too, simply owning the S&P 500 may not offer great exposure to areas that held up to inflation before. These sectors hold small weights in the S&P 500. Energy holds just a 2.9% weight in the S&P 500. Meanwhile, materials account for 2.9% and real estate 2.5%. ETFs can fill in the gaps.</p>\n<p>ETFs and exchange-traded notes, too, can offer inflation protection. The $60 billion in assets SPDR Gold Trust moves with the price of gold. The $3 billion in assets United States Oil Fund tracks the price of crude oil. And the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EEME\">iShares</a> TIPS Bond ETF tracks U.S. Treasuries, adjusted for inflation.</p>\n<p>But just know inflation, alone, doesn't determine S&P 500 returns. \"Inflation is just <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> input into equity prices and returns, and on its own it explains very little about how stocks will do over the longer term,\" Colas says.</p>\n<h3>Top S&P 500 Stocks In The 1970s</h3>\n<table>\n <thead>\n <tr>\n <th>Company</th>\n <th>Symbol</th>\n <th>70's % ch.</th>\n <th>Stock YTD % ch.</th>\n <th>Sector</th>\n <th>Composite Rating</th>\n </tr>\n </thead>\n <tbody>\n <tr>\n <td>Nucor</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>2,830.3%</td>\n <td>89.5%</td>\n <td>Materials</td>\n <td>99</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Schlumberger</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>1,031.7%</td>\n <td>45.5%</td>\n <td>Energy</td>\n <td>72</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Baker Hughes</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>856.4%</td>\n <td>16.8%</td>\n <td>Energy</td>\n <td>78</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Archer Daniels Midland</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>742.5%</td>\n <td>33.2%</td>\n <td>Consumer Staples</td>\n <td>90</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Teleflex</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>597.3%</td>\n <td>-4.7%</td>\n <td>Health Care</td>\n <td>45</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>General Dynamics</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>445.0%</td>\n <td>28.5%</td>\n <td>Industrials</td>\n <td>65</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Boeing</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>440.0%</td>\n <td>4.0%</td>\n <td>Industrials</td>\n <td>35</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HFC\">HollyFrontier</a></td>\n <td></td>\n <td>427.3%</td>\n <td>31.1%</td>\n <td>Energy</td>\n <td>42</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Halliburton</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>417.8%</td>\n <td>18.4%</td>\n <td>Energy</td>\n <td>63</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Tyler Technologies</td>\n <td></td>\n <td>347.3%</td>\n <td>-11.3%</td>\n <td>Information Technology</td>\n <td>45</td>\n </tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<h5>Sources: IBD, S&P Global Market Intelligence</h5>","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; charset=utf-8\" />\n<meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width,initial-scale=1.0,minimum-scale=1.0,maximum-scale=1.0,user-scalable=no\"/>\n<meta name=\"format-detection\" content=\"telephone=no,email=no,address=no\" />\n<title>Afraid Of Inflation? But if you know what to expect, signs of rising prices aren't always kryptonite to your portfolio. And that's if you should worry at all.\nIt turns out S&P 500 sectors follow a fairly predictable playbook in times of rising prices. If you're worried about inflation, S&P 500 sectors like energy, materials and real estate provide some safety, analysts say. \"Investors have used the threat of a spike in inflation, and now the confirmation from ... surprise strength in headline and core Consumer Price Index readings, to take profits in stocks,\" said Sam Stovall, strategist at CFRA.\nBut knowing the facts goes a long way in dealing with any potential market shocks, including inflation.\nKnow The Reality In Inflation Numbers\nIt's important to understand what inflation numbers are truly telling you before you panic. It seems like many S&P 500 investors calmed down after digging into inflation numbers more closely. The world's most popular index jumped more than 1.2% Thursday, making up the bulk of Wednesday's 2% freak-out sell-off.\nAt first glance, inflation numbers looked scary. The 4.2% jump in headline inflation and 3% rise in core inflation was much more than anyone thought. Core inflation hasn't jumped that fast on a year-over-year basis since 2008, Stovall says.\nBut a big piece of the rise is due to the 21% jump in annualized used vehicle prices, says Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research. And that jump is due to new vehicle shortages arising from a shortage in semiconductors. Backing out this short-term disruption, headline inflation was a much more normal 3.6%, he says. Meanwhile, the unusual 49.6% jump in April gasoline prices added to the distortion.\nThe inflation number \"just doesn't hold up to scrutiny as a warning bell about inflation,\" Colas said.\nUnderstand How The S&P 500 Reacts To Inflation\nOut-of-control inflation is widely feared. But times of lingering 5%-plus annual inflation are rare. Only twice since 1928 has U.S. inflation lingered: 1941 through 1951 and 1969 to 1982, Colas found.\nWere these periods devastating for the S&P 500? Hardly. The S&P 500 jumped 310% from 1941 to 1951, that's 121.1% adjusted for inflation, Colas found. Even in the 1969-to-1982 period, seen as a terrible time for inflation, the S&P 500 actually rose 176%. Yes, that's a loss of 11.6% adjusted for inflation, but it's hardly catastrophic especially for those who enjoyed the 1980s bull.\nInflation itself doesn't steer the S&P 500. The reason for inflation matters more. Prices rose in the 1940s for \"good reasons\" like an post-war boom, Colas said. But in the 1970s, energy price hikes were largely a tax on the economy.\n\"Markets are volatile because they're not sure which sort of inflation we have at present, or what (if anything) the Federal Reserve may do to bring inflation down,\" Colas said. \"That's enough uncertainty to create the volatility we're seeing, but not enough to say equities will necessarily underperform inflation in the years to come.\"\nLook To The 1970s For S&P 500 Clues (But Not Gospel)\nS&P 500 investors like to look back at the 1970s for a playbook for inflation. And it wasn't pretty, but it's not as devastating as many think either. And there were actually places to make big gains.\nDuring the 1970s, the S&P 500 posted an average monthly loss of 0.3%, Stovall says. But over the entire period, the S&P 500 rose 17.2%. That's just 1.6% annualized, or a fraction of the S&P 500's typical 10% yearly return. S&P sectors, though, hold clues or how markets can shift, Stovall says.\nIt turns out even during the \"bad\" inflation of the 1970s, only one of the 11 S&P 500 sectors fell on an average monthly basis. That sole loser was financials, which lost 0.8% monthly on average during the 1970s.\nSo where where the places to be? The comments, however, don’t appear to be matching up. While chip makers’ comments are setting off alarms, car makers—whose stocks are mostly off to a great start in 2021—are downplaying the problem.</p>\n<p>A lack of microchips that make modern cars function has resulted in unplanned downtime for many auto makers. Ford Motor (ticker: F), for instance, said it was extending outages at three assembly plants Thursday.Terrence Curtin, CEO of electrical component supplier TE Connectivity (TEL) told<i>Barron’s</i> this week that roughly 1 million cars weren’t built in the first quarter because of the shortage. That is about 5% of global auto output. And General Motors (GM) called the shortage a billion dollar headwind to 2021 operating profits when the company reported fourth quarter numbers earlier this year.</p>\n<p>Auto stocks, however, have been largely unaffected by the issue. GM and Ford shares, for instance, are both up 36% year to date. Parts suppliers TE and BorgWarner (BWA) are up 9% and 28%, respectively. Car dealer Auto Nation (AN) stock is also on fire as well, up about 38% so far in 2021.</p>\n<p>Demand is strong, rebounding from the 2020 pandemic-induced recession. The optimism for higher sales in 2021 and 2022 is trumping any concern about near term disruption. But the disruption might get worse before it gets better and auto investors will have to square that reality with their outlooks as more company report first quarter numbers.</p>\n<p>Ford is set to report earnings April 28. GM follows on May 5. Daimler (DAI.Germany), for its part, reported first quarter numbers Friday. Things still look good. Car sales rose, product mix was favorable and profitability improved. Management doesn’t sound too worried about microchips. “The impact from semiconductor shortage was not very material in the first quarter,” said CFO Harald Wilhelm on an investor call. Second quarter impacts are possible, but “we anticipate to recover part of the lost volumes by the end of the year.”</p>\n<p>Daimler stock is down 1.1% in overseas trading. Year to date, share are up about 28%.</p>\n<p>Stellantis (STLA) CEO Carlos Tavares sounded a little more cautious in an April 15 conference noting that production impacts would extend into the second half of 2021 and that “visibility on the speed at which this is going to be fixed is reasonably low right now.”</p>\n<p>Along with some auto makers, Intel (INTC) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) have also reported first quarter results. Taiwan Semi went first, saying the automotive shortage should be “greatly reduced” by the third quarter of 2021.</p>\n<p>Resolution is good news, but Q3 is a little later than auto companies expected at the beginning of the year. Intel management was a little more cautious on their earnings conference call. They said the shortage might stretch on for longer than investors currently expect. “The industry is now challenged by a shortage of foundry capacity, substrates and components,” commented CEO Patrick Gelsinger Thursday evening. “It will take a couple of years for the ecosystem to make the significant investments to address these shortages.”</p>\n<p>Investors should get ready to hear more about shortages extending deeper into 2021. The stocks won’t get a pass unless companies keep putting up good numbers like Diamler. Auto suppler Gentex (GNTX), for instance, missed first quarter sales estimates because of the shortage. The company reported $484 million in first quarter sales Friday. Wall Street was looking for $491 million. Gentex management estimated that $45 million in sales was lost due to the shortage.</p>\n<p>Gentex shares are down about 1% in early trading. That isn’t a big move, but it is a wobble with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively.</p>\n<p>The chip issue isn’t going away. And it will remain a watch item for auto investors, who aren’t use to thinking about foundries and substrates, as Intel’s Gelsinger put it.</p>","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; charset=utf-8\" />\n<meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width,initial-scale=1.0,minimum-scale=1.0,maximum-scale=1.0,user-scalable=no\"/>\n<meta name=\"format-detection\" content=\"telephone=no,email=no,address=no\" />\n<title>Why Car Stocks Aren’t Getting Crushed by the Chip Shortage</title>\n<style type=\"text/css\">\na,abbr,acronym,address,applet,article,aside,audio,b,big,blockquote,body,canvas,caption,center,cite,code,dd,del,details,dfn,div,dl,dt,\nem,embed,fieldset,figcaption,figure,footer,form,h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6,header,hgroup,html,i,iframe,img,ins,kbd,label,legend,li,mark,menu,nav,\nobject,ol,output,p,pre,q,ruby,s,samp,section,small,span,strike,strong,sub,summary,sup,table,tbody,td,tfoot,th,thead,time,tr,tt,u,ul,var,video{ font:inherit;margin:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;border:0 }\nbody{ font-size:16px; line-height:1.5; color:#999; background:transparent; }\n.wrapper{ overflow:hidden;word-break:break-all;padding:10px; }\nh1,h2{ font-weight:normal; line-height:1.35; margin-bottom:.6em; }\nh3,h4,h5,h6{ line-height:1.35; margin-bottom:1em; }\nh1{ font-size:24px; }\nh2{ font-size:20px; }\nh3{ font-size:18px; }\nh4{ font-size:16px; }\nh5{ font-size:14px; }\nh6{ font-size:12px; }\np,ul,ol,blockquote,dl,table{ margin:1.2em 0; }\nul,ol{ margin-left:2em; }\nul{ list-style:disc; }\nol{ list-style:decimal; }\nli,li p{ margin:10px 0;}\nimg{ max-width:100%;display:block;margin:0 auto 1em; }\nblockquote{ color:#B5B2B1; border-left:3px solid #aaa; padding:1em; }\nstrong,b{font-weight:bold;}\nem,i{font-style:italic;}\ntable{ width:100%;border-collapse:collapse;border-spacing:1px;margin:1em 0;font-size:.9em; }\nth,td{ padding:5px;text-align:left;border:1px solid #aaa; }\nth{ font-weight:bold;background:#5d5d5d; }\n.symbol-link{font-weight:bold;}\n/* header{ border-bottom:1px solid #494756; } */\n.title{ margin:0 0 8px;line-height:1.3;color:#ddd; }\n.meta {color:#5e5c6d;font-size:13px;margin:0 0 .5em; }\na{text-decoration:none; color:#2a4b87;}\n.meta .head { display: inline-block; overflow: hidden}\n.head .h-thumb { width: 30px; height: 30px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border-radius: 50%; float: left;}\n.head .h-content { margin: 0; padding: 0 0 0 9px; float: left;}\n.head .h-name {font-size: 13px; color: #eee; margin: 0;}\n.head .h-time {font-size: 11px; color: #7E829C; margin: 0;line-height: 11px;}\n.small {font-size: 12.5px; display: inline-block; transform: scale(0.9); -webkit-transform: scale(0.9); transform-origin: left; -webkit-transform-origin: left;}\n.smaller {font-size: 12.5px; display: inline-block; transform: scale(0.8); -webkit-transform: scale(0.8); transform-origin: left; -webkit-transform-origin: left;}\n.bt-text {font-size: 12px;margin: 1.5em 0 0 0}\n.bt-text p {margin: 0}\n</style>\n</head>\n<body>\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<header>\n<h2 class=\"title\">\nWhy Car Stocks Aren’t Getting Crushed by the Chip Shortage\n</h2>\n\n<h4 class=\"meta\">\n\n\n2021-04-23 23:13 GMT+8 <a href=https://www.barrons.com/articles/why-auto-stocks-arent-getting-crushed-by-the-chip-shortage-51619189064?mod=RTA><strong>Barrons</strong></a>\n\n\n</h4>\n\n</header>\n<article>\n<div>\n<p>Dreamstime\nWith first quarter results coming in, car and semiconductor companies are commenting on the microchip shortage which is hampering global auto production. Second quarter impacts are possible, but “we anticipate to recover part of the lost volumes by the end of the year.”\nDaimler stock is down 1.1% in overseas trading. Year to date, share are up about 28%.\nStellantis (STLA) CEO Carlos Tavares sounded a little more cautious in an April 15 conference noting that production impacts would extend into the second half of 2021 and that “visibility on the speed at which this is going to be fixed is reasonably low right now.”\nAlong with some auto makers, Intel (INTC) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) have also reported first quarter results. Taiwan Semi went first, saying the automotive shortage should be “greatly reduced” by the third quarter of 2021.\nResolution is good news, but Q3 is a little later than auto companies expected at the beginning of the year. Intel management was a little more cautious on their earnings conference call. They said the shortage might stretch on for longer than investors currently expect. “The industry is now challenged by a shortage of foundry capacity, substrates and components,” commented CEO Patrick Gelsinger Thursday evening. “It will take a couple of years for the ecosystem to make the significant investments to address these shortages.”\nInvestors should get ready to hear more about shortages extending deeper into 2021. The stocks won’t get a pass unless companies keep putting up good numbers like Diamler. Auto suppler Gentex (GNTX), for instance, missed first quarter sales estimates because of the shortage. The company reported $484 million in first quarter sales Friday. Wall Street was looking for $491 million. Gentex management estimated that $45 million in sales was lost due to the shortage.\nGentex shares are down about 1% in early trading. That isn’t a big move, but it is a wobble with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively.\nThe chip issue isn’t going away. And it will remain a watch item for auto investors, who aren’t use to thinking about foundries and substrates, as Intel’s Gelsinger put it.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"F":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,"GM":0.9,".SPX":0.9,".DJI":0.9,"TSLA":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":753,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9989351727,"gmtCreate":1665920497770,"gmtModify":1676537679428,"author":{"id":"3581591015314710","authorId":"3581591015314710","name":"Ljoney","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8376cac12c1b661feac4d507eb1379e4","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581591015314710","idStr":"3581591015314710"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/YF8.SI\">$YZJ Fin Hldg(YF8.SI)$</a>Come in","listText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/YF8.SI\">$YZJ Fin Hldg(YF8.SI)$</a>Come in","text":"$YZJ Fin Hldg(YF8.SI)$Come in","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/12facc0f1e33a8b786c0428f488cdb7e","width":"1125","height":"1896"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9989351727","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":824,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
