If you said Warren Buffett, you've identified one star stock picker at the top of the list.
\n
Buffett and his investment vehicle Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B) are huge on dividend stocks. So much so that the company stands to draw nearly $4 billion in such payouts alone this year.
\n
In that spirit, here's a look at two particularly attractive Buffett dividend stocks that can pump out a thick stream of regular income to your portfolio, too: Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and STORE Capital (NYSE:STOR).
\n
\n
Verizon
\n
Up until a few years ago, the old-fashioned Buffett basically eschewed tech stocks. That changed with the arrival of Ted Weschler and Todd Combs as investment managers at Berkshire Hathaway. Since then, the two relatively young men were instrumental in Berkshire taking a stake in Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Combs was likely the decision maker in its buying cloud-based data storage and analytics service provider Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW).
\n
It's probable that one or both were also the trigger-pullers on the company's largest telecom sector investment currently, rock-solid incumbent Verizon, which also happens to be a dependable dividend payer.
\n
Operating in a business with constant and heavy cash flow thanks to its nearly 95 million wireless retail connections, the company has plenty of dosh for a high dividend.
\n
Paying one is a long-standing Verizon habit. It and its corporate predecessors have dispensed a disbursement in every quarter since the mid-1980s. If you said Warren Buffett, you've identified one star stock picker at the top of the list.\nBuffett and his investment vehicle Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A)(NYSE:BRK.B) are huge on dividend stocks. So much so that the company stands to draw nearly $4 billion in such payouts alone this year.\nIn that spirit, here's a look at two particularly attractive Buffett dividend stocks that can pump out a thick stream of regular income to your portfolio, too: Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and STORE Capital (NYSE:STOR).\nImage source: The Motley Fool.\nVerizon\nUp until a few years ago, the old-fashioned Buffett basically eschewed tech stocks. That changed with the arrival of Ted Weschler and Todd Combs as investment managers at Berkshire Hathaway. Since then, the two relatively young men were instrumental in Berkshire taking a stake in Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Combs was likely the decision maker in its buying cloud-based data storage and analytics service provider Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW).\nIt's probable that one or both were also the trigger-pullers on the company's largest telecom sector investment currently, rock-solid incumbent Verizon, which also happens to be a dependable dividend payer.\nOperating in a business with constant and heavy cash flow thanks to its nearly 95 million wireless retail connections, the company has plenty of dosh for a high dividend.\nPaying one is a long-standing Verizon habit. It and its corporate predecessors have dispensed a disbursement in every quarter since the mid-1980s. Over the past 10 years, that's crept up from just under $0.49 per share to the current level of almost $0.63. That makes for a hearty dividend yield of 4.5% on the most recent closing share price.\nMeanwhile, Verizon is assertively building out its 5G network, which when fully broadened should deliver extremely fast internet connection speeds to its customers. Yes, that's an expensive undertaking, but with nearly $130 billion in revenue and free cash flow approaching $24 billion last year, the company has more than enough for that shareholder-pleasing dividend.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSTORE Capital\nOf the nearly 50 stocks in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio of publicly traded companies, there is but a single real estate investment trust (REIT): STORE Capital.\nThe company is focused on the retail sector, which was hit hard by the pandemic. But the damage was contained by the REIT's strategy of limiting exposure: No single one of its tenants contributes over 3% to the company's total rental income.\nThat, plus an aggressive expansion program that's seen the company grow its portfolio to more than 2,700 properties across the U.S., has kept it on a growth path. Rental revenue growth was stunted last year because of the pandemic, but still grew (by 3% compared to 2019).\nIf the company's recently released second-quarter figures are any indication, better times are ahead: Rental revenue increased by 15% on a year-over-year basis. Meanwhile, STORE Capital's adjusted funds from operations (AFFO, the most important profitability line item for REITs) leaped 25% across that one-year stretch.\nFor REITs, since they're required to pay out nearly all of their profits in the form of shareholder remuneration, higher profitability equals higher dividend. As STORE Capital continues to grow its business, so grows its payout. And I can’t stand it anymore.
\n
If you buy a stock purely because it’s gone up a lot, without doing any research on it whatsoever, you are not—as the Journal and its editors bizarrely insist on calling you—an “investor.” If you buy a cryptocurrency because, hey, that sounds like fun, you aren’t an investor either.
\n
Whenever you buy any financial asset becauseyou have a hunchorjust for kicks, or becausesomebody famous is hyping the heck out of itoreverybody else seems to be buying it too, you aren’t investing.
\n
You’re definitely a trader: someone who has just bought an asset. And you may bea speculator: someone who thinks other people will pay more for it than you did.
\n
Of course, some folkswho buy meme stocks likeGameStopCorp.GME5.88%areinvestors. They read the companies’ financial statements, study the health of the underlying businesses and learn who else is betting on or against the shares. Likewise, many buyers of digital coins have put in the time and effort to understand how cryptocurrency works and how it could reshape finance.
\n
An investor relies on internal sources of return: earnings, income, growth in the value of assets. A speculator counts on external sources of return: primarilywhether somebody else will pay more, regardless of fundamental value.
\n
The word investor comes from the Latin “investire,” to dress in or clothe oneself, surround or envelop. You would never wear clothes without knowing what color they are or what material they’re made of. Likewise, you can’t invest in an asset you know nothing about.
\n
Nevertheless, the Journal and its editors have long called almost everybody who buys just about anything an “investor.” On July 12, 1962, the Journal publisheda letter to the editorfrom Benjamin Graham, author of the classic books “Security Analysis” and “The Intelligent Investor.” That June, complained Graham, the Journal had run an article headlined “Many Small Investors Bet on Further Drops, Sell Odd Lots Short.”
\n
He wrote: “By what definition of ‘investment’ can one give the name ‘investors’ to small people who make bets on the stock market by selling odd lots short?” (To short an odd lot is to borrow and sell fewer than 100 shares in a wager that a stock will fall—an expensive and risky bet, then and now.)
\n
“If these people are investors,” asked Graham, “how should one define ‘speculation’ and ‘speculators’? Isn’t it possible that the currentfailure to distinguishbetweeninvestment and speculationmay do grave harm not only to individuals but to the whole financial community—as it did in the late 1920s?”
\n
Graham wasn’t a snob who thought that the markets should be the exclusive playground of the rich. He wrote “The Intelligent Investor” with the express purpose of helping less-wealthy people participate wisely in the stock market.
\n
In that book, after which this column is named, Graham said, “Outright speculation is neither illegal, immoral, nor (for most people) fattening to the pocketbook.”
\n
However, he warned, it creates three dangers: “(1) speculating when you think you are investing; (2) speculating seriously instead of as a pastime, when you lack proper knowledge and skill for it; and (3) risking more money in speculation than you can afford to lose.”
\n
Most investors speculate a bit every once in a while. Like a lottery ticket or an occasional visit to the racetrack or casino, a little is harmless fun. A lot isn’t.
\n
If you think you’re investing when you’re speculating, you’ll attribute even momentary success to skill even thoughluck is the likeliest explanation. That can lead you to take reckless risks.
\n
Take speculating too seriously, and it turns intoan obsessionandan addiction. You become incapable of accepting your losses or focusing on the future more than a few minutes ahead. Next thing you know, you’re throwing even more money onto the bonfire.
\n
I think calling traders and speculators “investors” shoves many newcomers farther down the slippery slope toward risks they shouldn’t take and losses they can’t afford. I fervently hope the Journal and its editors will finally stop using “investor” as the default term for anyone who makes a trade.
\n
“ ‘Investor’ has a long history in the English language as a catch-all term denoting people who commit capital with the expectation of a return, no matter how long or short, no matter how many or how few investing columns they read,” WSJ Financial Editor Charles Forelle said in response to my complaints. “Back at least to the mid-19th century, ‘invest’ has even been used to describe a wager on horses—an activity surely no less divorced from fundamental analysis than a purchase of dogecoin.”
\n
I hear you, Boss, but I still think you’re wrong. There’s no way the Journal would say a recreational gambler is “investing” at the racetrack just because a dictionary says we can.
\n
Calling novice speculators “investors” is one of the most powerful ways marketers fuel excessive trading.
\n
Ina recent Instagram post, a former porn star who goes by the name Lana Rhoades posed in—well, mostly in—a bikini, as she held up what appears to be Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor.” According to IMDb.com, she starred in such videos as “Tushy” and “Make Me Meow.”
\n
In her post, which was “liked” by nearly 1.8 million people, Ms. Rhoades announced that she will be promoting a cryptocurrency calledPAWGcoin.
\n
The currency’s website says the coin is meant for “those who pay homage to developed posteriors.” (PAWG, I’ve been reliably informed, stands for Phat Ass White Girl.)
\n
PAWGcoin is up roughly 900% since Ms. Rhoades began promoting it in early June, according to Poocoin.io, a website that tracks such digital currencies.
\n
Ms. Rhoades, who has tweeted “I also read the WSJ every morning,” couldn’t be reached for comment. PAWGcoin’s website encourages visitors to “invest now.”
\n
In Ms. Rhoades’s Instagram post, she is holding up an open copy of the “The Intelligent Investor,” whose cover is reversed. She appears to be reading it with her eyes closed.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Investor, Trader, Speculator: Which One Are You?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nInvestor, Trader, Speculator: Which One Are You?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-12 11:56 GMT+8 The Wall Street Journal\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Understanding the difference between speculation and investing is essential to avoiding reckless risk.\n\nI’ve had it.\nThe Wall Street Journal is wrong, and has remained wrong for decades, about one of ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"SPY":"标普500ETF",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite",".DJI":"道琼斯"},"source_url":"https://www.wsj.com/articles/you-cant-invest-without-trading-you-can-trade-without-investing-11623426213?mod=markets_lead_pos5","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1147474880","content_text":"Understanding the difference between speculation and investing is essential to avoiding reckless risk.\n\nI’ve had it.\nThe Wall Street Journal is wrong, and has remained wrong for decades, about one of the most basic distinctions in finance. Next thing you know, you’re throwing even more money onto the bonfire.\nI think calling traders and speculators “investors” shoves many newcomers farther down the slippery slope toward risks they shouldn’t take and losses they can’t afford. I fervently hope the Journal and its editors will finally stop using “investor” as the default term for anyone who makes a trade.\n“ ‘Investor’ has a long history in the English language as a catch-all term denoting people who commit capital with the expectation of a return, no matter how long or short, no matter how many or how few investing columns they read,” WSJ Financial Editor Charles Forelle said in response to my complaints. “Back at least to the mid-19th century, ‘invest’ has even been used to describe a wager on horses—an activity surely no less divorced from fundamental analysis than a purchase of dogecoin.”\nI hear you, Boss, but I still think you’re wrong. There’s no way the Journal would say a recreational gambler is “investing” at the racetrack just because a dictionary says we can.\nCalling novice speculators “investors” is one of the most powerful ways marketers fuel excessive trading.\nIna recent Instagram post, a former porn star who goes by the name Lana Rhoades posed in—well, mostly in—a bikini, as she held up what appears to be Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor.” According to IMDb.com, she starred in such videos as “Tushy” and “Make Me Meow.”\nIn her post, which was “liked” by nearly 1.8 million people, Ms. Rhoades announced that she will be promoting a cryptocurrency calledPAWGcoin.\nThe currency’s website says the coin is meant for “those who pay homage to developed posteriors.” (PAWG, I’ve been reliably informed, stands for Phat Ass White Girl.)\nPAWGcoin is up roughly 900% since Ms. Rhoades began promoting it in early June, according to Poocoin.io, a website that tracks such digital currencies.\nMs. Rhoades, who has tweeted “I also read the WSJ every morning,” couldn’t be reached for comment. PAWGcoin’s website encourages visitors to “invest now.”\nIn Ms. Rhoades’s Instagram post, she is holding up an open copy of the “The Intelligent Investor,” whose cover is reversed. She appears to be reading it with her eyes closed.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":72,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3575443999456708","authorId":"3575443999456708","name":"ponyinvestor","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/138d1ebc8820019726a687f0ffe45994","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3575443999456708","authorIdStr":"3575443999456708"},"content":"Like and response to this comment pls","text":"Like and response to this comment pls","html":"Like and response to this comment pls"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9965961570,"gmtCreate":1669873882190,"gmtModify":1676538261464,"author":{"id":"3581873279775743","authorId":"3581873279775743","name":"Onglie","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ee9a02d518986ab876ea3421b40a35ed","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581873279775743","authorIdStr":"3581873279775743"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Surprised] ","listText":"[Surprised] ","text":"[Surprised]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9965961570","repostId":"1100468786","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1100468786","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1669872868,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1100468786?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-12-01 13:34","market":"us","language":"en","title":"TSMC Plans to Make More Advanced Chips in US at Urging of Apple","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1100468786","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Arizona plant slated for 2024 will use 4-nanometer technologyChange is a win for Biden efforts to bo","content":"

Arizona plant slated for 2024 will use 4-nanometer technology

Change is a win for Biden efforts to bolster US manufacturing

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. will offer advanced 4-nanometer chips when its new $12 billion plant in Arizona opens in 2024, an upgrade from its previous public statements, after US customers such as Apple Inc. pushed the company to do so, according to people familiar with the matter.

TSMC is expected to announce the new plan when President Joe Biden and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo visit Phoenix for a ceremony next Tuesday, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.

The TSMC factory had been slated to make 5-nanometer semiconductors, a standard that will be far from the cutting edge by 2024. Unfortunately, there aren’t many investors looking for cryptos to buy in 2023. The ultra-loose monetary policy is long gone, and most cryptocurrency projects are finding it extraordinarily difficult to maintain their current price, let alone their uptrend.Nonetheless, there are still many projects that have good upside prospects. The crypto market is highly cyclical, and buying some of these projects right now could pay off in the long run, especially once the market turns a corner.

However, investors should also consider the risk-reward ratio they target when investing in crypto. A good rule of thumb is to put around 5% of your portfolio into highly speculative assets. While Bitcoin(BTC-USD) and Ethereum(ETH-USD) are solid long-term investments, their upside potential isn’t as great due to their high market capitalizations, and I don’t consider both of them as “highly speculative.” Almost everyone knows about the two big projects, and discussing them more in this article will be of little value.

Therefore, this article will feature the following five cryptos for investors looking for cryptos to buy with more upside potential. Naturally, this comes with more volatility, but these assets should fit the “highly speculative” criteria:

Cryptos to Buy: Qtum (QTUM-USD)

Qtum(QTUM-USD) deserves a much higher valuation due to its complexity and solutionist purpose. The project aims to combine the strengths of Bitcoin and Ethereum while addressing the problems on these blockchains. The most significant feature of the Qtum blockchain is that it allows “smart contracts to change the core parameters of the network such as block size and gas fees without ever needing to hard fork the blockchain.” This characteristic could boost the project’s value once it gains more recognition.

Moreover, the project could benefit disproportionately from the next crypto bull run for two reasons: One, its small market cap and cyclical nature. Two, the project could see more inflow of funds and developers as Bitcoin and Ethereum are heavily congested during such bull runs. The project’s flexibility regarding fees and support for various programming languages will also make it more appealing.

Cryptos to Buy: r/Cryptocurrency Moons (MOON-USD)

r/Cryptocurrency Moons(MOON-USD) are the community tokens for Reddit’s largest cryptocurrency subreddit. The token is supported by the subreddit’s growing members and will stay relevant despite its small size, as Reddit is among the most influential social media platforms.

On the contrary, the MOON token does not have developers and is entirely decentralized. Thus, this is not a utility token but rather an asset that relies primarily on crypto’s popularity. This token could surge once the crypto market turns a corner and the subreddit gains more activity. Most significantly, many big-name exchanges are active on the r/Cryptocurrency subreddit and are likely to list the token sometime in the future.

ALTAVA (TAVA-USD)

ALTAVA(TAVA-USD) is a project focusing on the metaverse and luxury non-fungible tokens. TAVA had a rough start in 2022 due to the broad-based decline in crypto-related assets last year, but there’s more to look forward to for this token. First, the TAVA token is resilient at its current valuation as all its cons are priced in. Moreover, Altava is an Asia-based company that is more resilient and less affected by the FTX crisis than most American projects. It is also a company with actual revenue. Altava is breaking even for 2022, which is rare for Web3 projects that usually burn capital and have zero revenue. The company also has partnerships with many blue-chip companies, which is another plus point.

Second, Meta Platforms(NASDAQ: META) has yet to give up on its metaverse segment and continues spending billions on marketing and developing the virtual world. If this does pay off in the long run, TAVA is set to be a major beneficiary.

XRP (XRP-USD)

Ripple’s XRP(XRP-USD) is among the high-risk, high-reward cryptos to buy ideas despite being among the market’s largest projects. Its blockchain technology is among the most successful and is among the rare few projects that managed to have a real-world impact. The company has partnered with 300+ financial institutions, including Bank of America(NYSE: BAC), Standard Chartered Bank(OTCMKTS: SCBFY), American Express(NYSE: AXP), and the Royal Bank of Canada(NYSE: RY).

In addition, Ripple is also the first choice for many countries that are considering central bank digital currencies (or CBDCs). Of course, one may think that such a project should be valued much higher. Why isn’t it, then? The biggest concern for Ripple is that it is under a Securities and Exchange Commission (or SEC)lawsuit. The SEC considers XRP as a security, and the ruling could have significant implications for the broader crypto market.

Conversely, Ripple has a strong case as XRP does not meet the definition of securities and has no investment contract, and the case is more in its favor. However, the SEC is a federal agency, which complicates the issue. If XRP does win the lawsuit, its upside could be massive.

Filecoin (FIL-USD)

Filecoin(FIL-USD) is a decentralized peer-to-peer storage system that could gain traction due to the fast-growing data center industry. The project offers can store data without a centralized authority and without any censorship for much lower costs than traditional data centers. Moreover, there’s no central server, so the project offers remarkable uptime.

I see the FIL token valued much more than it currently is in the future. Naturally, this comes with more volatility, but these assets should fit the “highly speculative” criteria:Cryptos to Buy: Qtum (QTUM-USD)Qtum(QTUM-USD) deserves a much higher valuation due to its complexity and solutionist purpose. The project’s flexibility regarding fees and support for various programming languages will also make it more appealing.Cryptos to Buy: r/Cryptocurrency Moons (MOON-USD)r/Cryptocurrency Moons(MOON-USD) are the community tokens for Reddit’s largest cryptocurrency subreddit. Most significantly, many big-name exchanges are active on the r/Cryptocurrency subreddit and are likely to list the token sometime in the future.ALTAVA (TAVA-USD)ALTAVA(TAVA-USD) is a project focusing on the metaverse and luxury non-fungible tokens. The company also has partnerships with many blue-chip companies, which is another plus point.Second, Meta Platforms(NASDAQ: META) has yet to give up on its metaverse segment and continues spending billions on marketing and developing the virtual world. If this does pay off in the long run, TAVA is set to be a major beneficiary.XRP (XRP-USD)Ripple’s XRP(XRP-USD) is among the high-risk, high-reward cryptos to buy ideas despite being among the market’s largest projects. Its blockchain technology is among the most successful and is among the rare few projects that managed to have a real-world impact. The company has partnered with 300+ financial institutions, including Bank of America(NYSE: BAC), Standard Chartered Bank(OTCMKTS: SCBFY), American Express(NYSE: AXP), and the Royal Bank of Canada(NYSE: RY).In addition, Ripple is also the first choice for many countries that are considering central bank digital currencies (or CBDCs). Of course, one may think that such a project should be valued much higher. Why isn’t it, then? The biggest concern for Ripple is that it is under a Securities and Exchange Commission (or SEC)lawsuit. The SEC considers XRP as a security, and the ruling could have significant implications for the broader crypto market.Conversely, Ripple has a strong case as XRP does not meet the definition of securities and has no investment contract, and the case is more in its favor. However, the SEC is a federal agency, which complicates the issue. If XRP does win the lawsuit, its upside could be massive.Filecoin (FIL-USD)Filecoin(FIL-USD) is a decentralized peer-to-peer storage system that could gain traction due to the fast-growing data center industry. The project offers can store data without a centralized authority and without any censorship for much lower costs than traditional data centers. Moreover, there’s no central server, so the project offers remarkable uptime.I see the FIL token valued much more than it currently is in the future. As Data centers and cloud businesses continue to grow, the demand for FIL will too. Blockchain storage is still an up-and-coming industry; if it goes mainstream, Filecoin will likely be a multibagger investment. Thus, it is among the top cryptos to buy.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":72,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9929215649,"gmtCreate":1670677169681,"gmtModify":1676538415688,"author":{"id":"3581873279775743","authorId":"3581873279775743","name":"Onglie","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ee9a02d518986ab876ea3421b40a35ed","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581873279775743","authorIdStr":"3581873279775743"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Bets","listText":"Bets","text":"Bets","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9929215649","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":45,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9964100846,"gmtCreate":1670092259285,"gmtModify":1676538301081,"author":{"id":"3581873279775743","authorId":"3581873279775743","name":"Onglie","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ee9a02d518986ab876ea3421b40a35ed","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581873279775743","authorIdStr":"3581873279775743"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Goal?","listText":"Goal?","text":"Goal?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9964100846","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":143,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9956633980,"gmtCreate":1673982463040,"gmtModify":1676538912112,"author":{"id":"3581873279775743","authorId":"3581873279775743","name":"Onglie","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ee9a02d518986ab876ea3421b40a35ed","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581873279775743","authorIdStr":"3581873279775743"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[What] ","listText":"[What] ","text":"[What]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9956633980","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":132,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9951428082,"gmtCreate":1673542090146,"gmtModify":1676538854107,"author":{"id":"3581873279775743","authorId":"3581873279775743","name":"Onglie","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ee9a02d518986ab876ea3421b40a35ed","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581873279775743","authorIdStr":"3581873279775743"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"1. Hackers pulled off the biggest ever cryptocurrency heist on Tuesday, ","content":"
WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Hackers pulled off the biggest ever cryptocurrency heist on Tuesday, stealing more than $600 million in digital coins from token-swapping platform Poly Network, only to return $342 million worth of tokens less than 48 hours later, the company said.
\n
Here is what we know so far about the heist.
\n
WHAT IS POLY NETWORK?
\n
A lesser-known name in the world of crypto, Poly Network is a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform that facilitates peer-to-peer transactions with a focus on allowing users to transfer or swap tokens across different blockchains.
\n
For example, a customer could use Poly Network to transfer tokens such as bitcoin from the Ethereum blockchain to the Binance Smart Chain.
\n
Poly Network was founded by Chinese entrepreneur Da Hongfei, who is currently chief executive of Neo, a blockchain platform.
\n
According to Neo's website, Poly Network was launched in August last year as a collaboration between Neo, crypto trading platform Switcheo and blockchain company Ontology.
\n
HOW DID HACKERS STEAL THE TOKENS?
\n
Poly Network operates on the Binance Smart Chain, Ethereum and Polygon blockchains. Tokens are swapped between the blockchains using a smart contract which contains instructions on when to release the assets to the counterparties.
\n
One of the smart contracts that Poly Network uses to transfer tokens between blockchains maintains large amounts of liquidity to allow users to efficiently swap tokens, according to crypto intelligence firm CipherTrace.
\n
Poly Network tweeted on Tuesday that a preliminary investigation found the hackers exploited a vulnerability in this smart contract.
\n
According to an analysis of the transactions tweeted by Kelvin Fichter, an Ethereum programmer, the hackers appeared to override the contract instructions for each of the three blockchains and diverted the funds to three wallet addresses, digital locations for storing tokens. These were later traced and published by Poly Network.
\n
The attackers stole funds in more than 12 different cryptocurrencies, including ether and a type of bitcoin, according to blockchain forensics company Chainalysis.
\n
A person claiming to have perpetrated the hack said they had spotted a \"bug,\" without specifying, and that they wanted to \"expose the vulnerability\" before others could exploit it, according to digital messages posted on the Ethereum network published by Chainalysis. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the messages.
\n
WHERE DID THE MONEY GO?
\n
Coindesk reported on Tuesday that the hackers had initially tried to transfer some of the assets from one of the three wallets into liquidity pool Curve.fi, but that transfer was rejected. About $100 million was moved out of another of the wallets and deposited into liquidity pool Ellipsis Finance, Coindesk also reported.
\n
Curve.fi. and Ellipsis Finance could not immediately be reached for comment.
\n
But early Wednesday the hackers started transferring assets back to Poly Network and by Thursday morning had returned $342 million worth of tokens, with $268 million stolen from the Ethereum chain outstanding, Poly Network said. Around 10 a.m. ET (1400 GMT) on Thursday, Poly Network said it was still communicating with the hackers, who were gradually transferring back the remaining assets.
\n
WHO IS THE HACKER?
\n
The hacker or hackers have not yet been identified.
\n
Cryptocurrency security firm SlowMist said on its website that it has identified the attacker's mailbox, internet protocol address, and device fingerprints, but the company has not yet named any individuals. Market corrections are par for the course when investing in stocks, but that same history shows these downturns lay the foundation for great returns afterward.
\n
If you've been thinking about buying shares of a video game stock, the next market pullback would be a great buying opportunity. Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI), Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), and Tencent (OTC:TCEHY) are cash-rich leaders in the burgeoning video game industry that can deliver market-beating returns over the long term. Let's find out a bit more about these three stocks.
\n
\n
1. Activision Blizzard
\n
Activision Blizzard owns eight franchises that have achieved at least $1 billion in lifetime bookings. It's best known for making one of the most-played first-person shooters on the market in Call of Duty. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first Call of Duty title was released, would be worth nearly $30,000 today.
\n
The Call of Duty franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter. With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.
\n
Making big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.
\n
It pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.
\n
Activision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet, which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.
\n
2. Electronic Arts
\n
Electronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably Madden and FIFA. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.
\n
Most importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter Apex Legends launched in 2019 and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings. EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous NCAA Football franchise under the new title EA Sports College Football, which should be released within the next few years.
\n
EA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work. So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic. These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's expansion into mobile.
\n
In fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year, which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%. The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.
\n
3. Tencent
\n
Tencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China. It owns Riot Games, the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in League of Legends. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.
\n
Gaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.
\n
Over the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow. It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet, in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter. That's a lot of firepower.
\n
Tencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s, and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Last year, management announced a deep pipeline of 40 new titles, including internally developed and licensed games in development. It's particularly focusing on where gamers are spending more time, which is with big-budget, immersive gaming experiences.
\n
\"The development speed, scale, range, and depth of information technology is much greater than the last Industrial Revolution,\" said Senior Vice President Steven Ma. \"This brings unimaginable opportunities for games and the space is almost limitless.\"
\n
However, investors should note the risks of investing in Chinese companies. Tencent has come under scrutiny by regulators that have cracked down on \"inappropriate\" content in the company's games, but Tencent has been able to navigate through these obstacles and deliver market-beating returns to investors. Market corrections are par for the course when investing in stocks, but that same history shows these downturns lay the foundation for great returns afterward.\nIf you've been thinking about buying shares of a video game stock, the next market pullback would be a great buying opportunity. Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI), Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), and Tencent (OTC:TCEHY) are cash-rich leaders in the burgeoning video game industry that can deliver market-beating returns over the long term. Let's find out a bit more about these three stocks.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Activision Blizzard\nActivision Blizzard owns eight franchises that have achieved at least $1 billion in lifetime bookings. It's best known for making one of the most-played first-person shooters on the market in Call of Duty. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first Call of Duty title was released, would be worth nearly $30,000 today.\nThe Call of Duty franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter. With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.\nMaking big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.\nIt pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.\nActivision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet, which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.\n2. Electronic Arts\nElectronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably Madden and FIFA. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.\nMost importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter Apex Legends launched in 2019 and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings. EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous NCAA Football franchise under the new title EA Sports College Football, which should be released within the next few years.\nEA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work. So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic. These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's expansion into mobile.\nIn fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year, which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%. The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.\n3. Tencent\nTencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China. It owns Riot Games, the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in League of Legends. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.\nGaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.\nOver the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow. It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet, in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter. That's a lot of firepower.\nTencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s, and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Last year, management announced a deep pipeline of 40 new titles, including internally developed and licensed games in development. It's particularly focusing on where gamers are spending more time, which is with big-budget, immersive gaming experiences.\n\"The development speed, scale, range, and depth of information technology is much greater than the last Industrial Revolution,\" said Senior Vice President Steven Ma. \"This brings unimaginable opportunities for games and the space is almost limitless.\"\nHowever, investors should note the risks of investing in Chinese companies. Tencent has come under scrutiny by regulators that have cracked down on \"inappropriate\" content in the company's games, but Tencent has been able to navigate through these obstacles and deliver market-beating returns to investors. The stock price has fallen recently, which can be chalked up to regulatory issues and near-term investments in the business that will pressure profitability this year. But I would look at the recent drop in share price as a buying opportunity.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":62,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
