Higher raw material costs could push the average price of a lithium-ion battery pack to $135 per kilowatt-hour this year, the first increase in prices in over a decade, according to BloombergNEF, a clean energy research group. San Jose, California-based QuantumScape is in the process of scaling production of its prototype cells, which start with no anode material and use a ceramic separator to help move ions back and forth to charge and discharge the battery. Batteries have three major components: two electrodes — an anode and a cathode — and an electrolyte that helps shuttle the charge between them. The materials used to make them determine how much energy batteries can store and at what cost.“On the cathode, we’re subject to the same supply chain constraints that everybody else is,” Jagdeep Singh, QuantumScape’s chief executive officer, said in an interview at the Bloomberg Green Summit in New York on Wednesday. “However we’re cathode-agnostic with our architecture, so we can switch from nickel to iron,’’ he said. “When you couple iron-based cathodes with our lithium-metal anode, you get a 50% increase’’ in energy density, he added, so that makes them a “viable alternative” to nickel. While its technology is promising, QuantumScape still has to demonstrate it can manufacture its new battery on a mass scale. The company went public in a reverse merger in late 2020. It’s since rocketed to a valuation of almost $50 billion on the promise of its next-generation technology, which could dramatically speed EV adoption by providing automakers with a safer, cheaper alternative to lithium-ion batteries. It has since come under pressure from short-sellers questioning its prospects, with shares plunging 89% from their peak in December 2020. The stock was up 2.6% at $14.74 at 1:16 p.m. in New York.Singh says despite the social media “trolls” and short-seller attacks, he doesn’t regret taking the company public because he’s been able to raise more than $1 billion to fund his efforts.“It’s absolutely been a positive, because we have access to much greater pools of capital than are available in private markets,” he said. “Battery production is capital intensive, building factories is not cheap.”\nMost Read from Bloomberg\n\nFour European Gas Buyers Made Ruble Payments to Russia\nRussia to Cut Gas to Poland and Bulgaria, Making Energy a Weapon\nRussia to Cut Gas to Poland, Bulgaria Until Pay Demands Met\nUkraine Latest: Russia Says It Cut Gas Flows to Poland, Bulgaria\nAmazon’s Twitch Seeks to Revamp Creator Pay With Focus on Profit\n\nMost Read from Bloomberg Businessweek\n\nThe 400 Airplanes That Russia Seized Have Become an Epic Insurance Struggle\nChina’s Biggest Covid Failure Is Not Deploying an mRNA Vaccine\nChina’s Campaign to Wipe Out Covid Is Crushing Its Economy\nElon Musk Stakes a $44 Billion Claim on the Future of Free Speech\nWe’re Fighting Covid With Faulty Data\n\n©2022 Bloomberg L.P.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":376,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9053859896,"gmtCreate":1654521229915,"gmtModify":1676535461312,"author":{"id":"3581912616398993","authorId":"3581912616398993","name":"tjhtjh","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581912616398993","authorIdStr":"3581912616398993"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"ohhh//@HelenJanet:Thank you very much @Tiger_Academy for explaining the following 5 types of orders for US stock trading:Limit OrderMarket OrderStop Loss OrderStop Limit OrderTrailing Stop OrderTo-date I have only used Limit Order to buy or sell a stock at a specific price, which is the most conventional way to place an order. The biggest feature of the limit order is that the price is flexible, we can trade according to the ideal price in our mind. The company introduced new versions of the MacBook laptop and several other interesting products. Despite the excitement these announcements always create, AAPL stock gained less than 1% on the day.

The reality is that tech isn’t on the minds of buyers at the moment. That award goes to the energy sector. Gas prices over $5 will do that.

Interestingly, Apple has a 6.5% weighting in the S&P 500, 170 basis points higher than the entire energy sector. At this point, Apple’s share price is trending lower. Meanwhile, the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund(NYSEARCA:XLE) is up 64.8% year-to-date (YTD).

For now, energy stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) remain the safer play. Here’s why.

AAPL Stock Trades at 22x Forward Earnings

Apple’s average 2023 earnings per share estimate is $6.58. That’s 22.2x its 2023 earnings. If you go by the median 12-month target price of $190, analysts expect its trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple to be closer to 29x next year. That compares to a trailing P/E ratio of just less than 24x today.

Even though it’s expensive, analysts seem to be saying that investors will continue to pay for quality. That makes sense.

In the meantime, the 21 stocks in XLE have an average trailing 12-month P/E ratio of17.3and a forward P/E of 10.3, less than half Apple’s forward P/E. That doesn’t make sense.

According to FactSet, energy stocks had an earnings growth rate of268%in Q1 2022, 6.4x higher than the materials sector, the second-highest sector for earnings growth. Despite a ton of money flowing into the energy sector, a company like Exxon Mobil(NYSE:XOM) still only trades at 10x its forward earnings. With XLE yielding 2.6% at the moment, you’re getting growth and income at a fraction of what you would pay for Apple.

Two Possible Ways to Play This

I’m the last person to suggest energy stocks are the way to go. I have been pessimistic about the oil and gas industry for many years. However, if the task at hand is getting blood from a stone — an apt description of the current equities markets — then XLE and the stocks held within this ETF are a smart bet right now.

Yes, you’ve missed substantial gains — XLE had a total return of 53.3% in 2021 and 62.6% YTD with dividends included. However, given that stocks like XOM are trading at half their five-year average P/E, I would be hard-pressed to come up with a single argument against betting on energy stocks through the remainder of 2022 and into 2023.

So, if you were thinking about placing a $5,000 bet on Apple, maybe you could put half of that into XLE and the remainder into AAPL stock. That’s one way to play this.

A second way is to buy Berkshire Hathaway(NYSE:BRK-B). It owns 911.3 million shares of Apple, accounting for 39% of Berkshire’s $346 billion equity portfolio. In addition, Chevron(NYSE:CVX) is Berkshire’s third-largest holding, while Occidental Petroleum(NYSE:OXY) is the holding company’s seventh-largest position.

The Bottom Line on AAPL Stock

If you add 83.86 million warrants, Berkshire has to buy OXY stock at $59.62 a share. Warren Buffett owns or controls 21.6% of the oil and gas producer. It’s also a top 10 holding of XLE.

Based on its current share price at the time of writing of $69.87, Berkshire’s OXY holdings would be worth $15.38 billion, which would vault it into the sixth spot, ahead of Kraft Heinz(NASDAQ:KHC).

Either of my two suggestions makes sense at the present time. If you’re a risk-averse investor, I’d go for the Berkshire option. The company introduced new versions of the MacBook laptop and several other interesting products. Despite the excitement these announcements always create, AAPL stock gained less than 1% on the day.The reality is that tech isn’t on the minds of buyers at the moment. That award goes to the energy sector. Gas prices over $5 will do that.Interestingly, Apple has a 6.5% weighting in the S&P 500, 170 basis points higher than the entire energy sector. At this point, Apple’s share price is trending lower. Meanwhile, the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund(NYSEARCA:XLE) is up 64.8% year-to-date (YTD).For now, energy stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) remain the safer play. Here’s why.AAPL Stock Trades at 22x Forward EarningsApple’s average 2023 earnings per share estimate is $6.58. That’s 22.2x its 2023 earnings. If you go by the median 12-month target price of $190, analysts expect its trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple to be closer to 29x next year. That compares to a trailing P/E ratio of just less than 24x today.Even though it’s expensive, analysts seem to be saying that investors will continue to pay for quality. That makes sense. In the meantime, the 21 stocks in XLE have an average trailing 12-month P/E ratio of17.3and a forward P/E of 10.3, less than half Apple’s forward P/E. That doesn’t make sense.According to FactSet, energy stocks had an earnings growth rate of268%in Q1 2022, 6.4x higher than the materials sector, the second-highest sector for earnings growth. Despite a ton of money flowing into the energy sector, a company like Exxon Mobil(NYSE:XOM) still only trades at 10x its forward earnings. With XLE yielding 2.6% at the moment, you’re getting growth and income at a fraction of what you would pay for Apple. Two Possible Ways to Play ThisI’m the last person to suggest energy stocks are the way to go. I have been pessimistic about the oil and gas industry for many years. However, if the task at hand is getting blood from a stone — an apt description of the current equities markets — then XLE and the stocks held within this ETF are a smart bet right now.Yes, you’ve missed substantial gains — XLE had a total return of 53.3% in 2021 and 62.6% YTD with dividends included. However, given that stocks like XOM are trading at half their five-year average P/E, I would be hard-pressed to come up with a single argument against betting on energy stocks through the remainder of 2022 and into 2023.So, if you were thinking about placing a $5,000 bet on Apple, maybe you could put half of that into XLE and the remainder into AAPL stock. That’s one way to play this.A second way is to buy Berkshire Hathaway(NYSE:BRK-B). The Bottom Line on AAPL StockIf you add 83.86 million warrants, Berkshire has to buy OXY stock at $59.62 a share. Warren Buffett owns or controls 21.6% of the oil and gas producer. It’s also a top 10 holding of XLE.Based on its current share price at the time of writing of $69.87, Berkshire’s OXY holdings would be worth $15.38 billion, which would vault it into the sixth spot, ahead of Kraft Heinz(NASDAQ:KHC).Either of my two suggestions makes sense at the present time. If you’re a risk-averse investor, I’d go for the Berkshire option. On the other hand, if you’re okay with a bit of risk, I’d consider doing the 50/50 AAPL/XLE split.Only aggressive investors ought to consider Apple stock at this point in the proceedings. I’m not sure we’ve seen the bottom just yet. Long-term, Apple remains a good core holding.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":201,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9086179424,"gmtCreate":1650426102168,"gmtModify":1676534722335,"author":{"id":"3581912616398993","authorId":"3581912616398993","name":"tjhtjh","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581912616398993","authorIdStr":"3581912616398993"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"yess//@ncyncy:wow//@Venus_M:$KEPPEL DC REIT(AJBU.SI)$\"Data centre-focused Keppel Data Centre (DC) Reit reported on Tuesday a marginal increase in first-quarter distribution per unit (DPU) of 0.2 per cent to S$0.02466, up from S$0.02462 a year earlier. In its business update for the first-quarter ended Mar 31, the real-estate investment trust (Reit) posted a 1.4 per cent decline in net property income to S$60.1 million, down from S$61.0 million a year earlier. While the company’s Saudi investors have already said they would vote against the takeover, it appears unlikely that enough investors will join them to block the deal, which provides a 38% premium to where Twitter was trading before Musk started buying shares.

Which leaves only regulatory bodies. Musk is still fighting with the Securities and Exchange Commission over market-moving statements he made in 2018 over Twitter, and has regularly tweeted vitriolic statements at the regulator. However, the SEC “will not and cannot interfere with the merger,” according to Stephen Diamond, associate professor at Santa Clara University School of Law.

“Their only role would be to police the disclosure sent to shareholders by the board and Musk for accuracy and completeness,” Diamond told MarketWatch. “The federal securities laws are disclosure rules, for the most part, not about providing reassurance about substance.”

Other regulatory bodies could conceivably jump in amid an antitrust crackdown on Big Tech, but that would be more likely if it was not Musk making the offer. Joshua White, assistant professor of finance at Vanderbilt University, who was also a financial economist for the SEC in the past, said he does not see any antitrust concerns because Musk’s other companies — Tesla Inc. TSLA, -0.70%, SpaceX and the Boring Co. — do not compete with Twitter.

Analysts believe Twitter received no other offers for the slow-growing social-media company because the regulatory environment in Washington would likely not allow any sort of deal from rivals such as Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc. FB, +1.56% or Google parent Alphabet Inc. GOOG, +3.04% GOOGL, +2.87%. White also noted that Twitter’s financial situation is not appealing to most typical private-equity investors, who take companies private and use their cash flow to pay down debt.

“Twitter’s cash flow doesn’t fit the profile of a private-equity buyer,” White said.

While it isn’t private equity making the bid, the deal is structured similarly. Last week, Musk said that he had lined up $25 billion in debt financing from Morgan Stanley MS, +0.37%, Bank of America BAC, -0.72%, Barclays BCS, +0.13% and others, with Musk’s Tesla shares providing collateral for $12.5 billion of those funds. The remaining $21 billion in equity, according to the Wall Street Journal, will come from Musk himself, likely through the sale of some of his Tesla shares or his other company investments.

Assuming that financing holds up, the deal should go through, as long as Twitter shareholders vote to approve it. It is Tesla investors, however, who could be the real losers in this deal.

“If Tesla’s stock declines, then the loan to value will decline,” White said, adding that Musk would potentially have to liquidate more Tesla shares, adding more pressure to the EV maker’s stock.

In addition, Musk will have the added distraction of his role in revamping Twitter, which could detract from the attention he gives Tesla. While the company’s Saudi investors have already said they would vote against the takeover, it appears unlikely that enough investors will join them to block the deal, which provides a 38% premium to where Twitter was trading before Musk started buying shares.Which leaves only regulatory bodies. Musk is still fighting with the Securities and Exchange Commission over market-moving statements he made in 2018 over Twitter, and has regularly tweeted vitriolic statements at the regulator. However, the SEC “will not and cannot interfere with the merger,” according to Stephen Diamond, associate professor at Santa Clara University School of Law.“Their only role would be to police the disclosure sent to shareholders by the board and Musk for accuracy and completeness,” Diamond told MarketWatch. “The federal securities laws are disclosure rules, for the most part, not about providing reassurance about substance.”Other regulatory bodies could conceivably jump in amid an antitrust crackdown on Big Tech, but that would be more likely if it was not Musk making the offer. Joshua White, assistant professor of finance at Vanderbilt University, who was also a financial economist for the SEC in the past, said he does not see any antitrust concerns because Musk’s other companies — Tesla Inc. TSLA, -0.70%, SpaceX and the Boring Co. — do not compete with Twitter.Analysts believe Twitter received no other offers for the slow-growing social-media company because the regulatory environment in Washington would likely not allow any sort of deal from rivals such as Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc. FB, +1.56% or Google parent Alphabet Inc. GOOG, +3.04% GOOGL, +2.87%. White also noted that Twitter’s financial situation is not appealing to most typical private-equity investors, who take companies private and use their cash flow to pay down debt.“Twitter’s cash flow doesn’t fit the profile of a private-equity buyer,” White said. The remaining $21 billion in equity, according to the Wall Street Journal, will come from Musk himself, likely through the sale of some of his Tesla shares or his other company investments.Assuming that financing holds up, the deal should go through, as long as Twitter shareholders vote to approve it. It is Tesla investors, however, who could be the real losers in this deal.“If Tesla’s stock declines, then the loan to value will decline,” White said, adding that Musk would potentially have to liquidate more Tesla shares, adding more pressure to the EV maker’s stock. In addition, Musk will have the added distraction of his role in revamping Twitter, which could detract from the attention he gives Tesla. Musk has stated many of his plans for Twitter on the platform itself, from making tweets available to edit and allowing for “free speech.” Musk also has outlined some cost-cutting measures for what he recently called the “de facto town square.”Barring an unseen change, this deal will go through, and Twitter will become a private company. What will happen then is the biggest question, but Musk also said in a recent TED Talk interview that he didn’t “care about the economics at all,” implying that he would not focus on Twitter’s profitability or revenue growth. If Musk is going to put economics aside, it’s a good thing for Twitter that he is taking it private, where the company can avoid Wall Street’s scrutiny of its slow-growing user base and revenue. In our last article, we covered the regulatory pressures on Alibaba and concluded things will eventually get better, but unfortunately, the decision by authorities to call a truce on the crackdown has taken much longer than we anticipated. In this article, we will discuss our thoughts on the potential future direction of the stock following a rerating in the market over the last few months.

The Chain Of Events

Alibaba stock has witnessed considerable volatility over the past couple of months and it is important to get an understanding of the sequence of events that have transpired to gauge a measure of what we are dealing with here. In our opinion, investors need to understand the sensitivity of Alibaba stock price to key developments (earnings, regulatory updates, etc.) to form a data-driven opinion of where the stock is headed in the future. In this segment, we will highlight the key developments briefly to help you quickly understand where we are at.

Exhibit 1: BABA stock price and daily percentage change

Author using Yahoo Finance data.Source: Author

Date

News

Market Reaction

February 24

Alibaba posts non-GAAP EPS of RMB 16.87, beating analyst estimates for earnings. Since its IPO, Alibaba was accustomed to a high level of revenue growth averaging 30-50% YoY with various new initiatives and innovations driving the company. Going forward, in the post-regulation era, we are now entering a subdued growth period for the company. This was evident in the most recent quarter as well, but to be fair, a slowdown in growth was always on the cards and it would have been irrational to expect Alibaba to grow at the same pace given the maturing nature of the company and the Chinese economy. That being said, investors were caught off-guard with the worse-than-expected deceleration of growth in the last quarter, and we believe it makes sense to determine whether Alibaba can reverse this trend or whether the company will continue to report lackluster revenue growth in the coming years, which does not bode well for growth investors.

Understanding The Revenue Drivers

For the quarter ended December 31, 2021, Alibaba reported revenue of $38 billion, an increase of 10% year-over-year. Below is a breakdown of revenue growth by segment.

China commerce segment: 7%

Cloud segment: 20%

Local consumer services segment: 27%

International commerce segment: 18%

Exhibit 2: Alibaba revenue growth by segment (last 4 quarters)

Company financials.Source: Author prepared based on company financials

**Note: "Other" Commerce in historical periods has been included under the Cainiao segment.

Nearly 70% of company revenue is contributed by the China Commerce segment and it is the weakness in this segment that had the biggest impact on revenue growth in the December quarter. The company management views this deceleration of growth as a result of slowing market conditions as well as competition. With a closer look at the overall revenue growth of the company and historical user growth trends, we can infer that there was a significant drop in average spending by customers in the December quarter. The weakness in consumption and elevated household savings are likely the result of prolonged uncertainty surrounding the virus and vaccine efficacy as well as a soft labor market as new urban job creation is still hovering below 2019 levels. Further, we believe the Zero-COVID approach adopted by the authorities has had a considerable impact on private consumption as it creates uncertainty about what the future holds for the Chinese economy. The strict measures imposed by the government from time to time have also created a stop-and-go business activity pattern, which is not ideal for economic growth.

Exhibit 4: Private consumption in China

The International Monetary Fund.Source: The International Monetary Fund

With lockdown measures imposed in Shenzhen and Shanghai in March and April, respectively, we remain cautious on the revenue prospects for Alibaba in the upcoming quarter, and we fear the company might once again disappoint investors with lackluster growth, and in the worst-case scenario, with a massive earnings miss.

Exhibit 5: China economic growth and outbreaks of COVID-19

The International Monetary Fund.Source: The International Monetary Fund

As a tool to spur economic growth, China’s Central bank has been resorting to decreasing its policy rates in the past. Today, we believe this is finally happening, aided by the Chinese regulators' positive comments toward tech companies. The shift in focus from the tech crackdown to the company's financials is a positive one, but then again, Alibaba is going through a difficult period financially, so this positive development will not yield positive results just yet. However, we believe Alibaba is deeply undervalued today and that handsome returns are in the cards for investors willing to stomach this volatility. For this reason, we remain invested in Alibaba.

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Thoughts On Alibaba Following A Rerating In The Market
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThoughts On Alibaba Following A Rerating In The Market\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-04-19 10:56 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryThe Chinese tech regulation might be coming to an end, which is not news anymore. In this article, we will try to shed some light on the reasons behind Alibaba's lackluster revenue growth in the...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"09988":"阿里巴巴-W","BABA":"阿里巴巴"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4501914-thoughts-on-alibaba-following-a-rerating-in-the-market","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/5a36db9d73b4222bc376d24ccc48c8a4","article_id":"1176682856","content_text":"SummaryThe Chinese tech regulation might be coming to an end, which is not news anymore. In this article, we will try to shed some light on the reasons behind Alibaba's lackluster revenue growth in the last quarter.Positive developments do not always lead to positive outcomes in the short run, which is exactly what is happening with Alibaba stock in our opinion.maybefalse/iStock Unreleased via Getty ImagesAlibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) stock has declined 34% since our last article, and over the last 12 months, the stock has declined a staggering 60% due to regulatory concerns and a host of negative narratives surrounding the company and the Chinese economy. The Chain Of EventsAlibaba stock has witnessed considerable volatility over the past couple of months and it is important to get an understanding of the sequence of events that have transpired to gauge a measure of what we are dealing with here. In our opinion, investors need to understand the sensitivity of Alibaba stock price to key developments (earnings, regulatory updates, etc.) to form a data-driven opinion of where the stock is headed in the future. In this segment, we will highlight the key developments briefly to help you quickly understand where we are at.Exhibit 1: BABA stock price and daily percentage changeAuthor using Yahoo Finance data.Source: AuthorDateNewsMarket ReactionFebruary 24Alibaba posts non-GAAP EPS of RMB 16.87, beating analyst estimates for earnings. The company, however, missed the revenue guidance by more than RMB 3 billion.Alibaba stock declined just 0.7% on the earnings release day, but the stock had already declined more than 12.3% in the 3 days leading up to the earnings report.March 10SEC hints at delisting actions.Alibaba stock declined 23.9% over 4 days.March 16Chinese authorities confirm their support for Chinese IPOs abroad, calling for closure on the tech crackdown.Shares gained 36.8% on March 16 and the rally continued in the days that followed.March 22Alibaba boosts its share buyback program to $25 billion from $15 billion.Shares gained 13% post announcement.Subsequent to the promising development with share buybacks, Alibaba shares yet again witnessed selling pressure due to strict lockdown measures imposed by the Chinese government to curb the spread of new COVID-19 cases and on the news that long-standing advocate of Alibaba, Charlie Munger, trimmed his position in half. What To Look Out For?Despite being plagued by a host of negative developments on the external front, the critical factor an investor needs to assess is the fundamental prospects for the company going forward. That being said, investors were caught off-guard with the worse-than-expected deceleration of growth in the last quarter, and we believe it makes sense to determine whether Alibaba can reverse this trend or whether the company will continue to report lackluster revenue growth in the coming years, which does not bode well for growth investors.Understanding The Revenue DriversFor the quarter ended December 31, 2021, Alibaba reported revenue of $38 billion, an increase of 10% year-over-year. Below is a breakdown of revenue growth by segment.China commerce segment: 7%Cloud segment: 20%Local consumer services segment: 27%International commerce segment: 18%Exhibit 2: Alibaba revenue growth by segment (last 4 quarters)Company financials.Source: Author prepared based on company financials**Note: \"Other\" Commerce in historical periods has been included under the Cainiao segment.Nearly 70% of company revenue is contributed by the China Commerce segment and it is the weakness in this segment that had the biggest impact on revenue growth in the December quarter. The company management views this deceleration of growth as a result of slowing market conditions as well as competition. With a closer look at the overall revenue growth of the company and historical user growth trends, we can infer that there was a significant drop in average spending by customers in the December quarter. This supports the above theory that revenue growth deceleration is a result of challenging market conditions.Exhibit 3: Alibaba quarterly revenue growth and user growth trendsCompany financials.Source: Author prepared based on company financialsIf we dig deeper, year-over-year growth rates of physical goods GMV for apparel and accessories and consumer electronic categories were slower than the overall average growth, while growth in the FMCG and home furnishing categories were better than the average. The weakness in consumption and elevated household savings are likely the result of prolonged uncertainty surrounding the virus and vaccine efficacy as well as a soft labor market as new urban job creation is still hovering below 2019 levels. The strict measures imposed by the government from time to time have also created a stop-and-go business activity pattern, which is not ideal for economic growth.Exhibit 4: Private consumption in ChinaThe International Monetary Fund.Source: The International Monetary FundWith lockdown measures imposed in Shenzhen and Shanghai in March and April, respectively, we remain cautious on the revenue prospects for Alibaba in the upcoming quarter, and we fear the company might once again disappoint investors with lackluster growth, and in the worst-case scenario, with a massive earnings miss.Exhibit 5: China economic growth and outbreaks of COVID-19The International Monetary Fund.Source: The International Monetary FundAs a tool to spur economic growth, China’s Central bank has been resorting to decreasing its policy rates in the past. There's a lot of content fat to trim

Netflix plans to spend $18 billion on programming this year. To put that in perspective, that's roughly equal to the budgets for the 60 most expensive movies ever made.

Netflix makes more than movies, of course, but $18 billion seems excessive, especially for content that lives almost entirely on Netflix itself, rather than in movie theaters or cable networks. The company ramped up content spending for years, arguing that more content drove subscription growth, but that strategy now appears to have reached its endpoint.

Netflix recognizes it needs to spend more efficiently on content, something that never seemed to be a priority before, and the company is already taking steps to do that. According to The Wall Street Journal, it's now prioritizing return on investment instead of reach, and plans to focus on quality rather than quantity.

As the success of other streaming platforms has shown, you only need one or two hits to attract subscribers, and much of the content on Netflix gets lost as there's no easy way to view the full catalog. While management hasn't said it will slash content spending, it did indicate on the earnings call that it would hold it back, at least until it reaccelerates revenue growth.

Improving ROI in content should be low-hanging fruit for the company, as there appear to be plenty of flops on the service -- like "He's Expecting," a Japanese show about a man who gets pregnant, which gets just a 1.1 out of 10 on IMDB.

2. Advertising is coming

Netflix has long resisted advertising, as co-CEO Reed Hastings has said he prefers the simplicity of the company's subscriber model. But with subscriber growth stagnating, the company looks ready to change course. On the earnings call, Hastings said, "Allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant [to] get what they want makes a lot of sense. So that's something we're looking at now. We're trying to figure out over the next year or two. But think of us as quite open to offering even lower prices with advertising as a consumer choice."

A lower-tier advertising plan makes sense for Netflix. It would help the company combat the challenge it's facing with password sharing, and the ad-tier model has been proven to work elsewhere. Hulu, for example, makes about the same in revenue from its ad subscriptions that it does from ad-free subscriptions. Diversifying revenue streams also seems like a smart move, especially as subscriber growth no longer seems reliable. Advertisers are likely eager to get on Netflix, which has a unique reach with more than 200 million global subscribers and in-depth knowledge of their viewing habits.

Offering an ad tier will likely give Netflix another high-margin revenue stream.

3. Fixing recommendations

One longtime challenge for Netflix has been its recommendation engine. Every user gets a different set of movies and TV shows displayed to them when they log in, but Netflix isn't always so good at finding something you want to watch. Users regularly complain that there's nothing good on the service, and its massive library tends to get lost in a menu that shows comparatively few choices.

In the letter to shareholders, management said it was focused in particular on improving the "quality of programming and recommendations." The company also said it was introducing a feature called "double thumbs up" to help users tell them what their favorite shows and movies are.

It's been years since Netflix introduced a major product change, and it seems long overdue. Improving recommendations may not be easy, but it's a problem well worth tackling. In order for Netflix to provide value, the only two things it really needs to do is create content users want to watch and make it easy for them to find it.

Management seemed to think that it would take a year or two to get these changes in place to reaccelerate subscriber growth -- so a turnaround won't be sudden, but Netflix clearly isn't standing still.

The good news is that the streaming stock trades for less than 20 times trailing earnings. If management executes, the stock could reclaim its previous heights in a few years.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Ways Netflix Can Bounce Back After the Crash
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Ways Netflix Can Bounce Back After the Crash\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-04-27 20:14 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
KEY POINTSNetflix's $18 billion content budget is much too bloated.Advertising could be a major revenue stream.Improving its recommendation system would improve customer satisfaction and subscriber ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"NFLX":"奈飞"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2022/04/27/3-ways-netflix-can-bounce-back/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1115718610","content_text":"KEY POINTSNetflix's $18 billion content budget is much too bloated.Advertising could be a major revenue stream.Improving its recommendation system would improve customer satisfaction and subscriber growth.Netflix shares are reeling after last week's big flop in its earnings report.The stock is down about 40% in just a few days, and is off about 70% from its peak last November. Users regularly complain that there's nothing good on the service, and its massive library tends to get lost in a menu that shows comparatively few choices.In the letter to shareholders, management said it was focused in particular on improving the \"quality of programming and recommendations.\" The company also said it was introducing a feature called \"double thumbs up\" to help users tell them what their favorite shows and movies are.It's been years since Netflix introduced a major product change, and it seems long overdue. Improving recommendations may not be easy, but it's a problem well worth tackling. In order for Netflix to provide value, the only two things it really needs to do is create content users want to watch and make it easy for them to find it.Management seemed to think that it would take a year or two to get these changes in place to reaccelerate subscriber growth -- so a turnaround won't be sudden, but Netflix clearly isn't standing still.The good news is that the streaming stock trades for less than 20 times trailing earnings. If management executes, the stock could reclaim its previous heights in a few years.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":48,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9084586698,"gmtCreate":1650891339749,"gmtModify":1676534809811,"author":{"id":"3581912616398993","authorId":"3581912616398993","name":"tjhtjh","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581912616398993","authorIdStr":"3581912616398993"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$yaaa","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$yaaa","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$yaaa","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9084586698","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":76,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
