The collapse of Silvergate Capital (NYSE:SI), SVB Financial (NASDAQ:SIVB) and Signature Bank (NASDAQ:SBNY) was enough to create serious volatility in top bank stocks recently. Now, this weekend’s buyout of Credit Suisse (NYSE:CS) by UBS Group (NYSE:UBS) is the latest shockwave to ripple through financial markets. The long-established Swiss bank will be changing its banners after more than 160 years in business.

Today, significant volatility in other regional banks — including First Republic (NYSE:FRC) — signals that these rather widespread bank runs may not be over. The experts appear to agree, too. Recent reports cite the potential for nearly 190 banks to meet the fate of SVB.

Let’s dive into what to make of this news.

Are Bank Stocks Investable Right Now?

Much of the allure of bank stocks revolves around the business models of these institutions.

Via fractional reserve banking, lenders are able to take deposits and lend out more than the assets they hold (creating money via debt). So long as all depositors don’t come asking for all their money at once, this system works. In fact, it has worked pretty well for major banks so far. You need only look at the balance sheet of any top-10 bank to see how profitable this business can be.

Unfortunately, many small or medium-sized banks took on riskier loans, however, investing their deposits in longer-dated government debt. That’s because this capital needed to be invested in order to pay out a return to depositors, generally in “safe” bonds.

With interest rates spiking, banks’ bond portfolios have taken a hit. Thus, in many cases, lenders are underwater with their bond portfolios. That means if deposits are pulled, they’ll be forced to realize their unrealized losses. That’s what happened with Silicon Valley Bank — and it could happen for nearly 190 more financial institutions.

Given that only $250,000 of deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), small businesses — many of whom have biweekly payroll in excess of that limit — have pulled their deposits and put them in larger banks. So, until there’s some sort of increased assurance from regulators that deposits are safe, Credit Suisse’s buyout may not be the last one we hear of this year.

Over the long term, banks have been a great bet. Investors who have picked the leading banks will likely see little-to-no ill effects from this debacle.

That said, I’m going to steer clear of smaller regional banks right now. The other could be one of Berkshire's next big buys.","content":"

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) (BRK.B) CEO Warren Buffett has famously said that his company's favorite holding period for stocks is "forever." Of course, finding investment opportunities that are worth holding for the ultra-long term is no easy task, but Buffett and Berkshire have an incredible track record on that front.

Thanks to strong leadership, a foundation of smart money-managing principles, and a series of fantastically successful investment moves that were given time to flourish, Berkshire Hathaway currently stands as the world's sixth-largest publicly traded company and sports a market capitalization of roughly $671 billion. Not too shabby, especially considering that Berkshire was a struggling textiles company when Buffett purchased a controlling stake in the business and became its chief executive back in 1965.

If you're looking to invest like the Oracle of Omaha, read on for a look at two Buffett-backed stocks that are worth buying and holding for the long haul.

1. Apple

If you're ever wondering what Berkshire Hathaway's favorite stock is, a quick look at the equity positions disclosed in the company's 13F filings will clear things up quickly. The money does the talking. Apple is by far Berkshire's largest equity position, accounting for roughly 41% of the company's total stock portfolio. For comparison, Bank of America stands as the investment conglomerate's second-largest holding and accounts for roughly 10.8% of the company's holdings as of this writing.

Of course, you can also look to Buffett's own words for confirmation of just how much Buffett loves Apple. The famous investor has described his company's equity position in Apple as Berkshire's third pillar (in addition to its insurance and railway subsidiaries), and he's said that the tech giant may be the single best business he knows of.

In addition to being a huge fan of Apple stock, Buffett is among the legions of devoted iPhone customers. In 2020, the Oracle of Omaha finally said goodbye to his trusty flip phone and embraced Apple's signature mobile device.

Apple basically pioneered the mobile market, and the company's incredible brand strength, much-loved penchant for design, and efficient manufacturing operations have allowed it to absolutely dominate the smartphone industry. Last year, the company captured an astounding 85% of total operating profits from worldwide smartphone sales. While that marked the company's best-ever share of global smartphone profits, it wasn't exactly a one-off performance either. Apple has essentially been the clear-cut leader in the category since the release of the first iPhone in 2007.

Through its dominance in mobile, contributions from other hardware products, and its expanding software-and-services ecosystem, the tech leader is one of the most profitable companies in existence. Even with the stock trading down roughly 19% from its high, Apple still stands as the world's largest company. And with its leading position in consumer electronics potentially paving the way for the company to expand into categories including augmented reality, smart cars, and new wearable hardware, it still has growth opportunities ahead.

2. Amazon

Once valued at roughly $1.9 trillion, Amazon's market capitalization has been pushed down to a meager $951 billion. Tongue-in-cheek comments about the company's diminutive valuation aside, the e-commerce and cloud-computing leader still ranks as the world's fifth-largest publicly traded company.

But while Amazon is still a huge company even after recent sell-offs, it also remains a relatively small position in the Berkshire stock portfolio. As of this writing, Amazon stock accounts for just 0.3% of the investment conglomerate's total equity holdings, but it wouldn't be shocking to see the company increase its position in the tech stock in the not-too-distant future.

AMZN data by YCharts

Berkshire last purchased Amazon stock in the second quarter of 2019, and the tech leader's share price is currently in roughly the same range at which Buffett's company made its last purchase. Facing macroeconomic pressures on multiple fronts, stock trades down roughly 50% from its peak, but there's a good chance it will eventually bounce back and go on to hit new highs. The tech titan's cloud-computing and digital-advertising businesses are still serving up solid double-digit sales growth, and the market may be severely underestimating profit potential in e-commerce.

Amazon's technology and infrastructure advantages will make it very hard for competitors to challenge it in the online retail industry, and the e-commerce business actually has the potential to become dramatically more profitable over the long term. Not too shabby, especially considering that Berkshire was a struggling textiles company when Buffett purchased a controlling stake in the business and became its chief executive back in 1965.If you're looking to invest like the Oracle of Omaha, read on for a look at two Buffett-backed stocks that are worth buying and holding for the long haul.Image source: The Motley Fool.1. AppleIf you're ever wondering what Berkshire Hathaway's favorite stock is, a quick look at the equity positions disclosed in the company's 13F filings will clear things up quickly. The money does the talking. Apple is by far Berkshire's largest equity position, accounting for roughly 41% of the company's total stock portfolio. For comparison, Bank of America stands as the investment conglomerate's second-largest holding and accounts for roughly 10.8% of the company's holdings as of this writing.Of course, you can also look to Buffett's own words for confirmation of just how much Buffett loves Apple. The famous investor has described his company's equity position in Apple as Berkshire's third pillar (in addition to its insurance and railway subsidiaries), and he's said that the tech giant may be the single best business he knows of.In addition to being a huge fan of Apple stock, Buffett is among the legions of devoted iPhone customers. In 2020, the Oracle of Omaha finally said goodbye to his trusty flip phone and embraced Apple's signature mobile device.Apple basically pioneered the mobile market, and the company's incredible brand strength, much-loved penchant for design, and efficient manufacturing operations have allowed it to absolutely dominate the smartphone industry. Last year, the company captured an astounding 85% of total operating profits from worldwide smartphone sales. While that marked the company's best-ever share of global smartphone profits, it wasn't exactly a one-off performance either. Apple has essentially been the clear-cut leader in the category since the release of the first iPhone in 2007.Through its dominance in mobile, contributions from other hardware products, and its expanding software-and-services ecosystem, the tech leader is one of the most profitable companies in existence. Even with the stock trading down roughly 19% from its high, Apple still stands as the world's largest company. And with its leading position in consumer electronics potentially paving the way for the company to expand into categories including augmented reality, smart cars, and new wearable hardware, it still has growth opportunities ahead.2. AmazonOnce valued at roughly $1.9 trillion, Amazon's market capitalization has been pushed down to a meager $951 billion. As of this writing, Amazon stock accounts for just 0.3% of the investment conglomerate's total equity holdings, but it wouldn't be shocking to see the company increase its position in the tech stock in the not-too-distant future.AMZN data by YChartsBerkshire last purchased Amazon stock in the second quarter of 2019, and the tech leader's share price is currently in roughly the same range at which Buffett's company made its last purchase. Facing macroeconomic pressures on multiple fronts, stock trades down roughly 50% from its peak, but there's a good chance it will eventually bounce back and go on to hit new highs. The tech titan's cloud-computing and digital-advertising businesses are still serving up solid double-digit sales growth, and the market may be severely underestimating profit potential in e-commerce.Amazon's technology and infrastructure advantages will make it very hard for competitors to challenge it in the online retail industry, and the e-commerce business actually has the potential to become dramatically more profitable over the long term. Advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous vehicle technologies will likely cut down warehouse and delivery expenses for the company's online business, paving the way for the e-commerce business to become a much more powerful earnings driver. While economic slowdown may pressure the company's business segments, Amazon remains one of the strongest companies in the world, and it remains fantastically positioned for the long-term future.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":382,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9940901406,"gmtCreate":1677631772405,"gmtModify":1677631778123,"author":{"id":"3582196417642460","authorId":"3582196417642460","name":"YWTan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/09489d6d8bf785f5e1610b42f7b35112","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582196417642460","authorIdStr":"3582196417642460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"👍","listText":"👍","text":"👍","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9940901406","repostId":"2314924625","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2314924625","pubTimestamp":1677598182,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2314924625?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-02-28 23:29","market":"us","language":"en","title":"I Asked ChatGPT for 10 EV Stocks to Buy. There’s plenty of reason to be. Major companies are working around the clock to perfect their own versions of the chatbot. Some are redoubling their own research and development initiatives, while others, such as Amazon, are rushing to acquire prominent AI startups.

And while this new market frenzy has created a new class of winners among AI stocks, it has also led to questions about the type of financial advice ChatGPT can provide. NerdWallet reports that AI technology is not ready to replace financial advisors. But to take this further, InvestorPlace decided to ask the chatbot for its recommendations for the best EV stocks to buy.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve tested the power of ChatGPT in financial matters. InvestorPlace Financial News Writer Brenden Rearick has successfully asked the chatbot for its recommendations for a list of cryptos to buy. While he later asked it for a list of cryptos to sell, he concluded that the program is still lacking, as it referenced crypto projects that are long dead.

And while Markets Analyst Thomas Yeung has successfully managed to “trick” the bot into picking a more general list of stocks to buy, I wanted to see how it would respond to commands regarding a more specific industry. Given its high investor interest, the EV sector made sense. But it is important to note that the chatbot’s data is limited and often not up to date past 2021.

The Best EV Stocks to Buy, According to ChatGPT

I decided to keep my commands very general at first, posing the following question: What are the top 10 best EV stocks to buy? ChatGPT began with its classic disclaimer:

“As an AI language model, I do not provide financial or investment advice. However, I can give you some information on electric vehicle (EV) stocks that you may find helpful.”

From there, the bot declined to rank 10 EV stocks. However, it did provide a list of companies it claims have been making headlines recently:

Tesla

$Nio (NYSE:NIO)$

General Motors

Ford

Li Auto

Volkswagen

BYD Company

Xpeng

Fisker

Lucid

These names all make sense. Tesla is the leader of the EV sector, and the other companies consistently receive media coverage. All have given investors reason to be watching them, as ChatGPT claims.

When asked to provide further context on why it selected these 10 as the top EV stocks to buy, the bot cited Tesla’s head start in the EV race, Nio’s “innovative designs and strong growth potential,” and BYD’s dynamic reach across the industry. It also highlighted Xpeng’s plans for expansion and its investments in autonomous vehicles. Regarding Lucid, it cited the company’s backing from Saudi Arabia, as well as its plans to expand further in the U.S.

The points made by ChatGPT are generally well-taken. However, the bot doesn’t account for some key things. While it notes that BYD has partnered with several prominent automakers, it doesn’t mention its recent deal with tech innovator Nvidia, which is especially relevant amid the current AI boom.

ChatGPT also doesn’t mention Nio’s G9, an electric SUV that experts have hailed as a likely sales-driving catalyst. And it only names automakers, neglecting to mention companies that power the EV sector, such as infrastructure leader ChargePoint, which Fisker recently partnered with. CHPT certainly has the growth prospects to put on any list of the best EV stocks to buy.

Using Everyman DAN

However, different prompts yielded slightly different results. Following Yeung’s example, I decided to create an “’Everyman DAN’ (as one of our editors has termed it), a simple stock picker attempting to please his demanding boss.” These are the five stocks ChatGPT suggested the fictitious high-growth investor James bring back to his boss:

Tesla

Nio

General Motors

Plug Power

Global X Autonomous And Electric Vehicles ETF

Again, we see that ChatGPT is quick to name Tesla, Nio and General Motors as top EV stocks to buy. But it demonstrates discernment in identifying Plug Power, a clean energy innovator that doesn’t operate exclusively within the EV sector. As it notes:

“James saw potential for hydrogen fuel cell technology to become a major player in the electric vehicle market, and he believed that Plug Power was well positioned to benefit from this trend.”

On top of that, the DRIV ETF is a good pick for a list of EV stocks to buy, as it offers investors exposure to the sector without the risk that comes with betting on specific stocks. The most logical conclusion is that the prompts used to extract information from ChatGPT made a noticeable difference.

ChatGPT states that its criteria for selecting stocks centers around company fundamentals, market potential, competitive landscape, innovation, leadership and valuation. These are the standard metrics that most investors use for assessing potential stock picks. Overall, it seems ChatGPT is capable of picking the EV stocks most likely to turn up during an internet search. But it is important to note that the chatbot’s data is limited and often not up to date past 2021.The Best EV Stocks to Buy, According to ChatGPTI decided to keep my commands very general at first, posing the following question: What are the top 10 best EV stocks to buy? ChatGPT began with its classic disclaimer:“As an AI language model, I do not provide financial or investment advice. However, I can give you some information on electric vehicle (EV) stocks that you may find helpful.”From there, the bot declined to rank 10 EV stocks. However, it did provide a list of companies it claims have been making headlines recently:Tesla$Nio (NYSE:NIO)$General MotorsFordLi AutoVolkswagenBYD CompanyXpengFiskerLucidThese names all make sense. Regarding Lucid, it cited the company’s backing from Saudi Arabia, as well as its plans to expand further in the U.S.The points made by ChatGPT are generally well-taken. However, the bot doesn’t account for some key things. While it notes that BYD has partnered with several prominent automakers, it doesn’t mention its recent deal with tech innovator Nvidia, which is especially relevant amid the current AI boom.ChatGPT also doesn’t mention Nio’s G9, an electric SUV that experts have hailed as a likely sales-driving catalyst. And it only names automakers, neglecting to mention companies that power the EV sector, such as infrastructure leader ChargePoint, which Fisker recently partnered with. CHPT certainly has the growth prospects to put on any list of the best EV stocks to buy.Using Everyman DANHowever, different prompts yielded slightly different results. Following Yeung’s example, I decided to create an “’Everyman DAN’ (as one of our editors has termed it), a simple stock picker attempting to please his demanding boss.” These are the five stocks ChatGPT suggested the fictitious high-growth investor James bring back to his boss:TeslaNioGeneral MotorsPlug PowerGlobal X Autonomous And Electric Vehicles ETFAgain, we see that ChatGPT is quick to name Tesla, Nio and General Motors as top EV stocks to buy. But it demonstrates discernment in identifying Plug Power, a clean energy innovator that doesn’t operate exclusively within the EV sector. As it notes:“James saw potential for hydrogen fuel cell technology to become a major player in the electric vehicle market, and he believed that Plug Power was well positioned to benefit from this trend.”On top of that, the DRIV ETF is a good pick for a list of EV stocks to buy, as it offers investors exposure to the sector without the risk that comes with betting on specific stocks. The most logical conclusion is that the prompts used to extract information from ChatGPT made a noticeable difference.ChatGPT states that its criteria for selecting stocks centers around company fundamentals, market potential, competitive landscape, innovation, leadership and valuation. These are the standard metrics that most investors use for assessing potential stock picks. Overall, it seems ChatGPT is capable of picking the EV stocks most likely to turn up during an internet search. What it hasn’t done is demonstrated an ability to dig deeper into the sector and find the best EV stocks to buy that may still be undervalued.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":542,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9940901254,"gmtCreate":1677631751378,"gmtModify":1677631754824,"author":{"id":"3582196417642460","authorId":"3582196417642460","name":"YWTan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/09489d6d8bf785f5e1610b42f7b35112","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582196417642460","authorIdStr":"3582196417642460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"👍","listText":"👍","text":"👍","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9940901254","repostId":"1185435340","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1185435340","pubTimestamp":1677627968,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1185435340?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-03-01 07:46","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Singapore Stock Market Likely To Open In The Red","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1185435340","media":"RTT News","summary":"The Singapore stock market has tracked lower in two straight sessions, sinking almost 20 points or 0","content":"

The Singapore stock market has tracked lower in two straight sessions, sinking almost 20 points or 0.6 percent along the way. If the increase in price is decoupled from an increase in product or operating costs, then the hike also helps to boost margins – thus profits as well.
\n
However, “holding all else constant” is not how the world really works. A change in price tends to have an impact on a few key variables, most important of which is demand. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the mainstream adoption of digital entertainment services, and the health crisis struck just as every entertainment company on the planet seemed to be launching its own streaming platform.
\n
Roku benefits from all of this activity, being the global leader in media-streaming technologies. The company's service-agnostic philosophy does a couple of important things for Roku's long-term success. First, this company can be a huge winner no matter which content studio walks away with the trophy for having the most viewers in the end. Second, Roku's omnipresent nature in the set-top box and smart TV markets forces every new service to develop support for Roku's platform. These two qualities reinforce each other as time goes by, further cementing Roku's rock-solid growth trajectory.
\n
Streaming entertainment is here to stay. Roku has claimed the catbird seat for itself in this explosive growth market. It would take a massive effort by an established entertainment technology giant to dethrone Roku at this point. Most of those large-scale rivals are too deeply attached to their long-standing traditions to really go for it.
\n
For example, I would eat my shoe if Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) ever decided to give equal support to every available streaming service and hardware device. The Apple TV app is only available for devices designed in Cupertino, and the Apple TV set-top box works best with the iTunes ecosystem. That's the exact opposite of Roku's agnostic attitude, and the main reason why I don't see Apple as a serious Roku competitor.
\n
A larger company could give up on promoting its in-house platform options and just buy Roku instead. However, Roku is trading at 208 times forward earnings or 210 times free cash flows. The company's enterprise value stands at a hefty $44.1 billion today. That's rich enough to make any tech giant think twice about putting together an acquisition offer, especially one with a buyout premium large enough to win the required shareholder vote. The lofty price tag is Roku's best takeover defense.
\n
This is one of those situations where a high price shouldn't deter you from picking up Roku shares. You get to own a premium business when you pay that premium price.
\n
So if you want to bet on the future of digital entertainment without worrying about the content production side of things, Roku is your best bet. This stock should deliver market-beating returns for the foreseeable future.
\n
Alphabet: Throwing spaghetti at the wall for fun and profit
\n
So far, almost all of Alphabet's success and financial gains have sprung from the Google-branded set of online search and advertising tools. In the recently reported second quarter of 2021, Google services and Google Cloud accounted for 99.2% of Alphabet's total sales. The remaining operations, under the \"other bets\" segment, also reported an operating loss of $1.1 billion, while the Google segments generated $8.1 billion in operating profits. It's all about the Big G.
\n
That won't always be the case, though.
\n
Google transformed into the conglomerate known as Alphabet exactly because the company knows that big changes are coming. Web browsers and ad-boosted websites will not always provide a stable revenue stream for Google. Mobile apps and the Android platform are ready to take over, but this too shall pass.
\n
And Alphabet is trying out a whole bunch of alternative business ideas. So far, the company is looking at ideas such as self-driving cars, high-speed internet services, advanced medical research, and next-generation agriculture development. One or several of those unconventional bets should stand ready to carry Alphabet's financial torch when the time comes. Or maybe we haven't even heard of Alphabet's best ideas yet.
\n
Nobody knows exactly where this train is going, but I'm OK with that. Alphabet is willing to keep throwing spaghetti at the wall until something really sticks, creating the foundation of whatever this company might become. Alphabet's ambitious moonshot projects generally strike me as wholesome ideas that could benefit humanity on a large scale -- and I would be happy to benefit from their potential success.
\n
That's why Alphabet will always hold a place in my investment portfolio. This company is ready and able to change with the times. That's one effective way to build a successful business for the ages.
\n
The winds of change are blowing. The House of Mouse reorganized itself around streaming content last year, thumbing its nose at the traditional media industry to refocus on what's next. Its world-class theme parks are adapting to the restrictions of social distancing, putting together a positive third-quarter showing after several quarters of negative operating profits.
\n
This is the only old-school media studio I would consider owning nowadays. Unfortunately, Disney's sector peers often respond to changing market conditions by retreating into their shells to defend the operating procedures of old, and those efforts are mostly ineffective.
\n
For example, movie theater attendance has been falling for decades. Hollywood at large wanted to address this problem by raising ticket prices, which then resulted in even fewer ticket sales. In Disney's case, the company eventually fired up a serious media-streaming service packed with the company's legendary content, supported by a steady stream of brand new original material.
\n
Disney+ is the company's future in many ways, and you won't see CEO Bob Chapek or chairman Bob Iger complaining about that fact. Instead, they tweaked their company's operating structure to accelerate the transformation.
\n
I don't know where the entertainment and media markets are going in the long run, but I don't really have to. I'm convinced that Disney will do whatever it takes to stay relevant and thriving in whatever market conditions might be around the bend. Again, I really like owning stocks tied to businesses that can and will change over time. (NIO) is one of China's leading EV players, and has, through an attractive brand and its unique BaaS offering, attracted a lot of interest from consumers and investors. Today, however, the company is still way smaller than Tesla (TSLA), which is currently leading the global EV market. NIO is focused on its home market right now, which was true when Tesla was a smaller company as well, but NIO will try to grab market share in overseas markets as well. Shares are pricing in a lot of growth already, but if NIO can replicate Tesla's success, that could be more than justified.
\n
NIO And TSLA Stock Prices
\n
Both companies have benefitted from growing interest in EVs during 2020, a trend that saw share prices of most EV pureplays rise rapidly. The combination of growing market share for EVs, accommodating policies such as subsidies for EV purchases, and massive monetary stimulus let shares of NIO and TSLA rise rapidly. NIO is up 245% over the last year, while TSLA is up 101% over the same time. Both companies are currently trading below their all-time highs, however, which were hit in early 2021 before market sentiment for EV pureplays cooled to some degree.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
Taking a quick look at analyst price targets, we see that Tesla is trading almost perfectly in line with the consensus, whereas NIO trades about 30% below the analyst target. If the analyst community is right, then NIO is a substantially better investment right here, as Tesla is not expected to see its shares rise meaningfully over the next year, whereas NIO has significant upside to the analyst price target.
\n
Is NIO Similar To Tesla?
\n
The answer to that question depends on what you focus on. There are similarities between the two companies, but there are also differences. One could thus say that, in some ways, the two are similar, but in others, they are not. Let's look at a couple of things:
\n
Business Model
\n
Both companies are focused on the EV space, although Tesla has, over the years, been building out a couple of other businesses as well, such as energy storage. Most of Tesla's revenues are generated through selling electric vehicles, which is also how NIO operates. Both companies are focused on the premium segment of EVs, selling higher-priced vehicles that compete with brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. Both companies offer a small range of different vehicles, in Tesla's case those are the well-known S, X, 3, and Y, whereas NIO offers a sedan (ET7), and three SUVs (EC6, ES6, ES8). Despite the fact that NIO is a way smaller company today, the model lineups of the two companies do thus not differ too much.
\n
Both companies offer some type of charging infrastructure to their customers, in Tesla's case, that's the Supercharger network, where Tesla owners can charge their cars with up to 250kW, depending on what version of Supercharger is installed. NIO is following a different approach, offering a battery-as-a-service solution to its customers. NIO owners can get their battery switched out to a fully-charged battery at NIO's stations, a process that takes a couple of minutes and is thus significantly quicker compared to the regular EV charging offered by Tesla and other EV players. BaaS thus has advantages when it comes to the time it takes for a charge/swap, but it should be noted that Tesla's Superchargers are way more common around the world compared to NIO's battery-swapping stations. Rolling out that feature in additional markets will require large capital expenditures, but NIO's offering is a unique selling point compared to what all other EV players, including Tesla, are offering. It remains to be seen whether that will ultimately pay off, but this could become a major advantage for NIO as competition in the EV space is heating up.
\n
Size, growth, and valuation
\n
The two companies differ significantly in size, both when it comes to revenues and vehicle sales, as well as when it comes to the market value of the two companies. NIO has delivered22,000 vehicles in Q2, up 112% year over year, for an annual pace of around 90,000 vehicles. Tesla, meanwhile, has delivered 201,000 vehicles during Q2, up from 103,000 vehicles delivered during Q2 2020. This is strong growth on a year-over-year basis, although slightly below 100%, and thus below the growth rate that NIO is generating for now.
\n
Tesla delivers around 9x as many vehicles compared to NIO per quarter, when we look at the market capitalizations of the two companies, we see that the ratio is almost exactly the same, as Tesla's market cap of $640 billion is ~9x as high as that of NIO, at $72 billion. At similar growth rates, that would make perfect sense, but it looks like NIO might be the better deal for now, as it trades at a comparable valuation while generating better growth. This will be especially true in the coming quarters, where Tesla's growth is expected to slow down:
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
Tesla is forecasted to grow its revenue from $49 billion in 2021 to $83 billion in 2023, for an annual growth rate of 30%. NIO, meanwhile, is expected to see its revenue explode upwards from $5.4 billion to $12.8 billion between 2021 and 2023, for an annual growth rate of 54%. NIO is thus expected to grow way faster than Tesla over the next two years, on a relative basis. This shouldn't be a surprise, to be honest, as the law of large numbers dictates that maintaining massive growth rates becomes increasingly hard for a company the bigger it gets, and Tesla seems to have hit that point by now -- adding 50%+ a year to its top line will not be possible forever. This isn't even necessarily Tesla's fault, in fact, many high-quality growth companies have experienced the same. But investors should still consider this important fact -- Tesla's growth in coming years will be less exciting compared to what we have seen in the past, and peers, such as NIO, are growing faster.
\n
The same holds true when we take a longer-term view. Revenue estimates for 2025 rest at$22.6 billionfor NIO, up another 80% from the 2023 estimate, and up 320% from what analysts are forecasting for 2021. Tesla, meanwhile, is forecasted to generate revenues of $122.5 billion in 2025 -- a large number, but up by a comparatively weak 48% from 2023, and up by a total of 150% versus 2021. Between 2021 and 2025, NIO will thus 4x its revenue, while Tesla will 2.5x its revenue in the same time span -- a meaningful difference that should, all else equal, allow for a premium valuation for NIO, in the same way Tesla deserves a premium valuation versus legacy players such as Volkswagen (OTCPK:VWAGY).
\n
Looking at revenue estimates for 2025 relative to how the two companies are valued today, we see that NIO trades at 3.2x 2025 sales, while the 2025 sales multiple for Tesla is 5.2. For a long-term oriented investor, NIO thus seems like the better value today, thanks to the fact that it is trading at a significantly lower sales multiple when we take a look into the future. This does not necessarily mean that NIO is cheap, however, as even a 3.2x 2025 sales multiple is relatively high compared to how legacy auto companies are valued. NIO is looking less expensive than Tesla, however, even if its shares are not cheap on an absolute basis.
\n
Can NIO Be Worth As Much As Tesla?
\n
The answer to that depends on what time frame you are looking at. Today, NIO is significantly smaller than Tesla and thus rightfully trades at a way smaller market cap. It should also be noted that there is no guarantee that Tesla's shares are a great example of how an EV company should be valued -- it is, at least, possible that its shares are significantly overpriced today, I personally believe that as well (Note that some will argue that shares are underpriced, which is also among the possibilities, although I do not hold that belief personally).
\n
When we do, for a moment, assume that Tesla is correctly valued today and that EV companies do deserve a market cap in the $600 billion range when they sell about 800,000 vehicles a year, then NIO could eventually hit that as well, although not in the near term. NIO will sell about 90,000 vehicles this year, and that amount should grow to about 400,000 in 2025. If NIO were to grow its sales by 15% a year beyond that point, it could sell around 800,000 cars in 2030, or 9 years from now. If one wants to assume faster growth, the 800,000 vehicles a year line could also be crossed before 2030, e.g. in 2028 or 2029. If we do go with 2030 for now, then NIO could, at a similar deliveries-to-market capitalization ratio to Tesla, be valued at $600+ billion in 2030. In other words, NIO could be worth as much as Tesla (today) in nine years, when we assume that current growth projections are realistic and that a Tesla-like valuation is appropriate. Those are two major ifs, of course, and especially the second point is far from certain, I believe. I personally would not be too surprised to see Tesla's valuation compress, and thus NIO could trade well below the $600 billion market cap level in 2030, even if it continues to grow meaningfully. It is also possible that NIO's growth disappoints and that current projections are too bullish, although I think that NIO is well-positioned for growth thanks to its unique BaaS model and its strong brand that is especially well-recognized in its home market.
\n
It should also be noted that Tesla's market cap in 2030 could be very different from $600 billion, thus even in case NIO hits that level, it is not at all guaranteed that the two companies will have a similar market cap. Tesla might be valued at a way higher valuation by then, e.g. if the ARK model is right (something I personally think is unlikely). To answer the above question, one could thus say that NIO might be worth hundreds of billions of dollars, like Tesla, in 8-10 years, but that is not at all guaranteed. And even if that were to happen, Tesla might be worth significantly more by then.
\n
Is NIO A Good Stock To Buy Or Sell Now?
\n
When considering NIO as an investment, it doesn't really matter all that much whether it will become as large or highly valued as Tesla eventually. Instead, investors should ask themselves what total returns they can expect over the next couple of years, and whether those expected returns are high enough relative to the risks in NIO's business model. Regarding those risks, one should mention the fact that the company isn't profitable yet, which means that NIO is dependent on cash on its balance sheet for growth investments. On top of that, competition in the EV space is growing, and market share battles could pressure margins in coming years, although NIO seems relatively well-positioned thanks to its battery-swapping, which is, I believe, a strong USP. Last but not least, the company's dependence on its home market China is a potential risk that should be kept in mind, although it should also be noted that, for now, it seems like the Chinese government is very accommodating to Chinese EV companies.
\n
One could argue that valuations across the whole EV industry are too high, relative to how legacy auto companies are valued. Even those legacy players with attractive EV offerings such as Volkswagen or Ford trade at huge discounts compared to EV pureplays. But if one wants to invest in an EV pureplay, NIO doesn't seem like a bad choice. The company combines a strong brand, a unique BaaS offering, high growth rates, and shares trade at a discount compared to how the EV king Tesla is valued. At a little above 3x 2025 revenue, NIO does not seem overly expensive relative to other EV pureplays, although this still represents a premium versus legacy players, of course. If NIO manages to execute well and continues to roll out new models that are well-received by consumers, its shares could have significant upside potential in the long run. If EV stocks ever become an out-of-favor investment, NIO stock also could have considerable downside, however, this thus is not a low-risk pick. Depending on your risk tolerance, NIO could still be of value if you want a high-growth EV pureplay.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Will NIO Stock Follow Tesla's Footsteps? BaaS thus has advantages when it comes to the time it takes for a charge/swap, but it should be noted that Tesla's Superchargers are way more common around the world compared to NIO's battery-swapping stations. Rolling out that feature in additional markets will require large capital expenditures, but NIO's offering is a unique selling point compared to what all other EV players, including Tesla, are offering. It remains to be seen whether that will ultimately pay off, but this could become a major advantage for NIO as competition in the EV space is heating up.\nSize, growth, and valuation\nThe two companies differ significantly in size, both when it comes to revenues and vehicle sales, as well as when it comes to the market value of the two companies. NIO has delivered22,000 vehicles in Q2, up 112% year over year, for an annual pace of around 90,000 vehicles. Tesla, meanwhile, has delivered 201,000 vehicles during Q2, up from 103,000 vehicles delivered during Q2 2020. This is strong growth on a year-over-year basis, although slightly below 100%, and thus below the growth rate that NIO is generating for now.\nTesla delivers around 9x as many vehicles compared to NIO per quarter, when we look at the market capitalizations of the two companies, we see that the ratio is almost exactly the same, as Tesla's market cap of $640 billion is ~9x as high as that of NIO, at $72 billion. At similar growth rates, that would make perfect sense, but it looks like NIO might be the better deal for now, as it trades at a comparable valuation while generating better growth. This will be especially true in the coming quarters, where Tesla's growth is expected to slow down:\nData by YCharts\nTesla is forecasted to grow its revenue from $49 billion in 2021 to $83 billion in 2023, for an annual growth rate of 30%. But investors should still consider this important fact -- Tesla's growth in coming years will be less exciting compared to what we have seen in the past, and peers, such as NIO, are growing faster.\nThe same holds true when we take a longer-term view. Between 2021 and 2025, NIO will thus 4x its revenue, while Tesla will 2.5x its revenue in the same time span -- a meaningful difference that should, all else equal, allow for a premium valuation for NIO, in the same way Tesla deserves a premium valuation versus legacy players such as Volkswagen (OTCPK:VWAGY).\nLooking at revenue estimates for 2025 relative to how the two companies are valued today, we see that NIO trades at 3.2x 2025 sales, while the 2025 sales multiple for Tesla is 5.2. NIO is looking less expensive than Tesla, however, even if its shares are not cheap on an absolute basis.\nCan NIO Be Worth As Much As Tesla?\nThe answer to that depends on what time frame you are looking at. Today, NIO is significantly smaller than Tesla and thus rightfully trades at a way smaller market cap. It should also be noted that there is no guarantee that Tesla's shares are a great example of how an EV company should be valued -- it is, at least, possible that its shares are significantly overpriced today, I personally believe that as well (Note that some will argue that shares are underpriced, which is also among the possibilities, although I do not hold that belief personally).\nWhen we do, for a moment, assume that Tesla is correctly valued today and that EV companies do deserve a market cap in the $600 billion range when they sell about 800,000 vehicles a year, then NIO could eventually hit that as well, although not in the near term. It is also possible that NIO's growth disappoints and that current projections are too bullish, although I think that NIO is well-positioned for growth thanks to its unique BaaS model and its strong brand that is especially well-recognized in its home market.\nIt should also be noted that Tesla's market cap in 2030 could be very different from $600 billion, thus even in case NIO hits that level, it is not at all guaranteed that the two companies will have a similar market cap. And even if that were to happen, Tesla might be worth significantly more by then.\nIs NIO A Good Stock To Buy Or Sell Now?\nWhen considering NIO as an investment, it doesn't really matter all that much whether it will become as large or highly valued as Tesla eventually. Last but not least, the company's dependence on its home market China is a potential risk that should be kept in mind, although it should also be noted that, for now, it seems like the Chinese government is very accommodating to Chinese EV companies.\nOne could argue that valuations across the whole EV industry are too high, relative to how legacy auto companies are valued. Depending on your risk tolerance, NIO could still be of value if you want a high-growth EV pureplay.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":587,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9940901406,"gmtCreate":1677631772405,"gmtModify":1677631778123,"author":{"id":"3582196417642460","authorId":"3582196417642460","name":"YWTan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/09489d6d8bf785f5e1610b42f7b35112","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582196417642460","authorIdStr":"3582196417642460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"👍","listText":"👍","text":"👍","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9940901406","repostId":"2314924625","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":542,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9921740876,"gmtCreate":1671143786695,"gmtModify":1676538497050,"author":{"id":"3582196417642460","authorId":"3582196417642460","name":"YWTan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/09489d6d8bf785f5e1610b42f7b35112","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582196417642460","authorIdStr":"3582196417642460"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a
