And the firm can access a huge liquidity line from the central bank.</p><p>While UBS will suspend its share buybacks for now, it said it’s still committed to a progressive dividend.</p><p>The (Many) Losers:</p><p>Credit Suisse’s Top Shareholders</p><p>Gulf investors old and new are hurting. Saudi National Bank’s investment was stunning in its brevity: the lender lost 1.1 billion francs less than 15 weeks from when it finished buying its stake in Credit Suisse’s latest capital raise. The firm thought it was buying at a bargain when it became the Swiss bank’s largest shareholder just a few months ago. Saudi National Bank’s chairman helped fuel the panic this week when he ruled out raising its stake in Credit Suisse.</p><p>The Qatar Investment Authority’s pain came over a much longer period, as it first invested in the last financial crisis, but it likely lost an even greater amount. In addition to being the bank’s second-biggest holder, it had owned in the past the firm’s AT1 bonds that were written to zero in the deal, though it’s unclear if QIA still held that debt. Shareholders won’t even get to vote on this deal after Switzerland changed its rules to rush the merger through.</p><p>Ulrich Koerner</p><p>Credit Suisse’s chief executive officer is expected to depart, having inherited a broken lender that he was unable to revive. Ulrich Koerner, who only took the top job last summer, had already mapped out a plan to cut back risk after a torrent of scandals and losses to focus more on wealth management. Bolder still was a plan to break out the bank’s best-performing investment banking businesses. But the firm was unable to recover from a crisis of confidence that caused billions of dollars to exit in October. In recent days, the pressure intensified until the Swiss government was forced to step in.</p><p>Michael Klein</p><p>The former Citigroup Inc. investment bank head’s grand plan to revive the First Boston brand and build it into a Wall Street advisory powerhouse now looks in ashes. Michael Klein, who had been tapped to lead the CSFB spinoff, was already in the process of selling his advisory boutique to Credit Suisse for a consideration of about $210 million when the bank’s fortunes suddenly unraveled in recent weeks. While UBS Chairman Colm Kelleher didn’t directly address CSFB at a press conference late Sunday, he did indicate that the firm was happy with its own investment bank and planned to cut back Credit Suisse’s substantially as well as pare back risk.</p><p>AT1 Bondholders</p><p>Bond investors are typically better protected from losses than shareholders, but not in this case. The Swiss regulator will impose losses on $17 billion of high-risk debt known as Additional Tier 1 bonds that make up part of a buffer of debt and equity intended to prevent taxpayers from having to shoulder the bill for a bank’s collapse. The total writedown marked the biggest loss yet for Europe’s $275 billion AT1 market. For one, fewer people are applying for loans right now, particularly with interest rates being so high. And because interest rates are so high, the cost that Upstart&#39;s institutional partners -- who, in the past, have bought the lion&#39;s share of all loans processed through the platform -- incur to fund these loans has led many to reduce or pause originations altogether. Upstart&#39;s model, which continues to learn and attune to the economic environment at hand, is also approving fewer loans.</p><p>So with loan volume depressed and Upstart being forced to carry far more loans on its balance sheet than usual, revenue has dropped, the company is currently unprofitable, and it&#39;s had to aggressively scale back costs, including in the form of layoffs.</p><p>While this is a tough moment for Upstart and its investors, I think it&#39;s far too soon to say all is lost. Case in point: Even though lending volume dropped 14% in 2022 compared to 2021, Upstart&#39;s contribution profit actually rose by almost the same amount (13%) from the prior year. Moreover, the underlying technology behind Upstart&#39;s platform -- which remains its greatest competitive advantage -- is continuing to prove its efficacy, with management noting that its model accuracy improved more in the seven months leading up to the end of 2022 than in the entire 30 months before that.</p><p>Even now, with institutions scaling back loan originations, more lending partners are continuing to jump on the Upstart bandwagon, its cohort of bank and credit union partners skyrocketing 120% in the 12-month period alone. With a growing network of lending partners and Upstart&#39;s platform rapidly learning and calibrating to the current environment, this could lay the groundwork for a robust recovery in conditions where the risk of default and interest rates are lower.</p><p>For risk-tolerant investors with cash to put to work right now, Upstart&#39;s current discounted price could present a timely opportunity to buy shares of a highly promising business in the early stages of growth while it&#39;s still beaten down.</p><h2>2. The company also now sells another surgical system, called the Ion, used in lung biopsies.</p><p>The adoption of surgical robotic systems within the medical community continues to increase, and it&#39;s estimated that this industry will surpass a valuation of nearly $20 billion by the year 2030. Meanwhile, as of 2021, Intuitive Surgical controlled about 80% of this global industry. Although the company is not without competition, no competitor has even come close to snagging this level of market share.</p><p>Beyond the company&#39;s first-mover advantage in its industry, however, the way in which Intuitive Surgical&#39;s business is designed has enabled the company to grow revenue and profits in a wide range of business and economic environments. Beyond the initial sales of its surgical systems, the company makes recurring revenue from services such as medical provider training on how to use its products, customer support, and replacement tools and instruments that accompany its systems.</p><p>Over the past 10 years, Intuitive Surgical has witnessed its revenue and earnings grow by respective clips of 175% and 97%. During that same time, the company improved its cash from operations by 70%.</p><p>And investors who stayed with the stock that entire time have benefited from a total return of over 300%. For most of my articles I try to stick to a general outline: a brief introduction followed by the investment thesis into some information on the company, wrapping up with valuation, dividends and/or buybacks, and a conclusion. I try to keep articles under 1500 words because those are the articles I prefer as a reader. Today I’m going to ramble a bit and wrap up after talking some more about the valuation.</p><p><b>Painting a Hypothetical Picture</b></p><p>Imagine there is a stock with a market cap of $232B, which is down over 70% from its peak. There is political risk and the complexity of an ADR structure, but shares are dual listed on the Hong Kong exchange, and the ADRs can be exchanged for Hong Kong shares through your brokerage. While the company’s home country overreacted to the beer bug with harsh lockdowns, they have started to open up their economy in the last couple of months. Their Q3 results were better than the first two quarters of the year, and I think we will see tailwinds in 2023 as their home country gets back to normal.</p><p>Approximately 90% of their revenue comes from China. While this creates uncertainty for American investors due to the so-called “China Discount”, I think that is why the valuation is so compelling today. Shares trade hands for just under $90 as I write this, which is up about 50% from the lows in October. The company has a cash rich balance sheet with $28.3B in cash and $45.8B in short term investments. They also have $33B in equity securities and $30.2B in equity method investments. This includes a 1/3 stake in Ant Group, which is one half of China’s fintech duopoly.</p><p>I’m curious to see what happens with Ant Group, which was pursuing a massive IPO a couple years ago. I don’t want to blow smoke, but I think the company’s stake is probably worth more than $30B. A quick peek at the liabilities side of the balance sheet shows approximately $23B in debt, which I don’t have any worries about given the amount of cash and equivalents on the balance sheet. The company has also taken advantage of the selloff to buy back a huge number of shares in the last couple years.</p><p>They repurchased 45.4M ADRs in Q3 for $3.3B, which is over 1% of the current market cap. The company earned $2.60 per share in Q3, a much better result than the first two quarters of the year. If you think like I do that this is sustainable, the company could earn $10 (or more) per share over the next 12 months. The buyback could also provide a nice tailwind for EPS and the current authorization has $21.3B remaining for the company to use over the next two years.</p><p>Another prominent investor has also recently taken a stake in the company. Michael Burry of Big Short fame recently bought the stock, which was approximately 10% of his portfolio at the time of the 13F filing at year end. Say what you want about the eccentric investor, but he has a history of identifying opportunities in the market with favorable risk/reward profiles. I don’t typically bury the lede like this, but that’s the position that Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) is in right now.</p><p><b>More on The Valuation</b></p><p>Alibaba stock is about as cheap as it has been since going public in the second half of 2014. Shares currently have earnings multiple of 11.5x, which is far too cheap even when you factor in the China discount if you ask me. If you factor in the company’s balance sheet, Alibaba looks even cheaper. If you just look at the cash and equivalents of $74.1B, the company has over 30% of its market cap in cash alone.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bf38a838c37d91a637134a62f51a46fb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"298\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Price/Earnings(fastgraphs.com)</p><p>If you want to pull the $74.1B in cash out of the $232B market cap, that leaves us with a valuation of $158B on the rest of the company. That would put the P/E in the single digits, which I think gives long-term investors a lot of potential for multiple expansion in the next couple of years. I don’t know if Alibaba will catch up to American tech companies as far as valuation, but I think today’s valuation is far too cheap. I don’t know what the short-term price action will be like, but I would be surprised if Alibaba is still trading below $100 in a year.</p><p><b>Conclusion</b></p><p>While I keep an eye on earnings when they come out for all the companies I own, sometimes I choose to wait a bit to write on a company to see how the market reacts and read some of the articles written by other authors. I thought there was a lot to like about the most recent quarterly report, and I think the risk/reward is very attractive for investors willing to stomach the volatility and risks that come with owning shares. If you told me that Alibaba would be down about 20% after the most recent earnings report, I would have been surprised to say the least. For most of my articles I try to stick to a general outline: a brief introduction followed by the investment thesis into some information on the company, wrapping up with valuation, dividends and/or buybacks, and a conclusion. I try to keep articles under 1500 words because those are the articles I prefer as a reader. Today I’m going to ramble a bit and wrap up after talking some more about the valuation.Painting a Hypothetical PictureImagine there is a stock with a market cap of $232B, which is down over 70% from its peak. There is political risk and the complexity of an ADR structure, but shares are dual listed on the Hong Kong exchange, and the ADRs can be exchanged for Hong Kong shares through your brokerage. While the company’s home country overreacted to the beer bug with harsh lockdowns, they have started to open up their economy in the last couple of months. Their Q3 results were better than the first two quarters of the year, and I think we will see tailwinds in 2023 as their home country gets back to normal.Approximately 90% of their revenue comes from China. While this creates uncertainty for American investors due to the so-called “China Discount”, I think that is why the valuation is so compelling today. Shares trade hands for just under $90 as I write this, which is up about 50% from the lows in October. The company has a cash rich balance sheet with $28.3B in cash and $45.8B in short term investments. They also have $33B in equity securities and $30.2B in equity method investments. This includes a 1/3 stake in Ant Group, which is one half of China’s fintech duopoly.I’m curious to see what happens with Ant Group, which was pursuing a massive IPO a couple years ago. I don’t want to blow smoke, but I think the company’s stake is probably worth more than $30B. A quick peek at the liabilities side of the balance sheet shows approximately $23B in debt, which I don’t have any worries about given the amount of cash and equivalents on the balance sheet. The company has also taken advantage of the selloff to buy back a huge number of shares in the last couple years.They repurchased 45.4M ADRs in Q3 for $3.3B, which is over 1% of the current market cap. The company earned $2.60 per share in Q3, a much better result than the first two quarters of the year. If you think like I do that this is sustainable, the company could earn $10 (or more) per share over the next 12 months. The buyback could also provide a nice tailwind for EPS and the current authorization has $21.3B remaining for the company to use over the next two years.Another prominent investor has also recently taken a stake in the company. Michael Burry of Big Short fame recently bought the stock, which was approximately 10% of his portfolio at the time of the 13F filing at year end. Say what you want about the eccentric investor, but he has a history of identifying opportunities in the market with favorable risk/reward profiles. I don’t typically bury the lede like this, but that’s the position that Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) is in right now.More on The ValuationAlibaba stock is about as cheap as it has been since going public in the second half of 2014. Shares currently have earnings multiple of 11.5x, which is far too cheap even when you factor in the China discount if you ask me. If you factor in the company’s balance sheet, Alibaba looks even cheaper. If you just look at the cash and equivalents of $74.1B, the company has over 30% of its market cap in cash alone.Price/Earnings(fastgraphs.com)If you want to pull the $74.1B in cash out of the $232B market cap, that leaves us with a valuation of $158B on the rest of the company. That would put the P/E in the single digits, which I think gives long-term investors a lot of potential for multiple expansion in the next couple of years. I don’t know if Alibaba will catch up to American tech companies as far as valuation, but I think today’s valuation is far too cheap. I don’t know what the short-term price action will be like, but I would be surprised if Alibaba is still trading below $100 in a year.ConclusionWhile I keep an eye on earnings when they come out for all the companies I own, sometimes I choose to wait a bit to write on a company to see how the market reacts and read some of the articles written by other authors. I thought there was a lot to like about the most recent quarterly report, and I think the risk/reward is very attractive for investors willing to stomach the volatility and risks that come with owning shares. If you told me that Alibaba would be down about 20% after the most recent earnings report, I would have been surprised to say the least.
