Investors see the banking woes forcing the Fed to pause the rate-hike cycle or even begin cutting as early as June, she noted. An end to the yearlong rise in rates will remove a source of pressure on stock-market valuations.

But gains last week, which came amid volatile trading, aren't sending an all-clear signal, stock-market analysts and investors said.

Banking worries haven't gone away after the failure of three U.S. institutions earlier this month and UBS Group AG's (UBS) agreement to acquire troubled Swiss rival Credit Suisse (CSGN.EB) in a merger forced by regulators. Jitters were on display Friday when shares of German financial giant Deutsche Bank (DBK.XE)got drubbed.

It's the fear of runs on U.S. regional banks that still keep investors up at night. Markets might face a test Monday if investors react to Federal Reserve data released after Friday's closing bell showed deposits at small U.S. banks dropped by a record $119 billion in the weekly period ended Wednesday, March 15, following Silicon Valley Bank's collapse the preceding Friday.

That sensitivity to deposits was on display last week. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was blamed for a late Wednesday selloff that saw the Dow end over 500 points lower after she told lawmakers that her department hadn't considered or discussed a blanket guarantee for deposits. On Thursday, she told House lawmakers that, "we would be prepared to take additional actions if warranted."

Deposits are "the epicenter of the crisis of confidence" in U.S. banks, said Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco, in a phone interview. He talked about his plans in the company's first-ever earnings call on Dec. 17.
\n
Rivian Has Ambitions Beyond Profit
\n
Like Tesla(TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, Scaringe sees EVs as more than just a way to earn a profit. He's pretty passionate, or at least he appears to be, about the impact his company can make on the environment.
\n
\n Our generation will have profound impact on the planet and the world our kid's kid's kids will inherit. We can spend a lot of time on the specifics of climate change, but the reality is we as society are rapidly changing the composition of the atmosphere. If we want life as we know it to thrive for many generations, for now we must change. This is what inspired me to start Rivian and this is what drives the decisions we made as an organization including the decision to become a public company. The challenge of shifting on fossil fuels is as big as it comes, and it's going to require people, companies and entire industries to come together in ways we never had before. From day one, our focus has always been to maximize impact, to keep the world adventurous forever.\n
\n
Those are bold statements, but people who buy EVs often do so because they feel as if they're doing right by the planet.
\n
Amazon Plays a Big Part in Rivian's Plans
\n
Amazon(AMZN) backed Rivian early and has placed a huge order for vans, but it can back out of taking delivery if the EV company can't deliver on its promises. Scaringe made clear that he understands the stakes.
\n
\n In the commercial market, we are bringing to market the Rivian Commercial Van platform. Our first vehicle on this platform will be our 700-cubic-foot electric delivery van, or EDV 700. We designed these vehicles working closely with Amazon, who has placed an initial order of 100,000 EDVs. Our commercial vehicles are designed with a focus on safety, comfort and ease of operation. They offer a step change in driver experience while also delivering a lower total cost of ownership. Every commercial vehicle sold to Amazon is complemented by FleetOS, our proprietary end-to-end centralized fleet management platform with a recurring monthly subscription fee. The 700-cubic-foot EDV has achieved a range of 201 miles based on internal testing using official EPA test procedures.\n
\n
Basically, Rivian succeeds or fails based on its ability to keep Amazon happy. The online giant won't be the only customer for its vans, but it will be the biggest and will serve as a bellwether for any other company that considers buying one (or many) for its fleet.
\n
Manufacturing May Be the Biggest Challenge
\n
Rivian has ambitious plans and it has to move quickly to achieve its goals and not see its market cap plummet. Scaringe laid out one of the biggest hurdles facing his company.
\n
\n Launching and ramping production of three different vehicles within a few months is an incredibly tough challenge. This production ramp requires the simultaneous ramp of our supply chain, hiring and training of our product workforce, equipment bring-up, and rapid iterations through production quality loops. These challenges have been exacerbated, given the state of our global supply chain, tight labor market, and of course the complications from Covid.\n
\n
The company, he said, will fall a few vehicles short of its stated goal to produce 1,200 cars and vans by the end of 2021. He says that the company should be able to ramp up quickly in the new year.
\n
\n Just as we're scaling our manufacturing facility, hundreds of our suppliers are also scaling their production to match our vehicle ramp rate. Our procurement team has remained nimble and continues to work with our supplier partners across all tiers to mitigate issues stemming from our supply chain delay of market delay to market and the Covid pandemic. He talked about his plans in the company's first-ever earnings call on Dec. 17.\nRivian Has Ambitions Beyond Profit\nLike Tesla(TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, Scaringe sees EVs as more than just a way to earn a profit. He's pretty passionate, or at least he appears to be, about the impact his company can make on the environment.\n\n Our generation will have profound impact on the planet and the world our kid's kid's kids will inherit. From day one, our focus has always been to maximize impact, to keep the world adventurous forever.\n\nThose are bold statements, but people who buy EVs often do so because they feel as if they're doing right by the planet.\nAmazon Plays a Big Part in Rivian's Plans\nAmazon(AMZN) backed Rivian early and has placed a huge order for vans, but it can back out of taking delivery if the EV company can't deliver on its promises. Scaringe made clear that he understands the stakes.\n\n In the commercial market, we are bringing to market the Rivian Commercial Van platform. The 700-cubic-foot EDV has achieved a range of 201 miles based on internal testing using official EPA test procedures.\n\nBasically, Rivian succeeds or fails based on its ability to keep Amazon happy. The online giant won't be the only customer for its vans, but it will be the biggest and will serve as a bellwether for any other company that considers buying one (or many) for its fleet.\nManufacturing May Be the Biggest Challenge\nRivian has ambitious plans and it has to move quickly to achieve its goals and not see its market cap plummet. Scaringe laid out one of the biggest hurdles facing his company.\n\n Launching and ramping production of three different vehicles within a few months is an incredibly tough challenge. This production ramp requires the simultaneous ramp of our supply chain, hiring and training of our product workforce, equipment bring-up, and rapid iterations through production quality loops. These challenges have been exacerbated, given the state of our global supply chain, tight labor market, and of course the complications from Covid.\n\nThe company, he said, will fall a few vehicles short of its stated goal to produce 1,200 cars and vans by the end of 2021. He says that the company should be able to ramp up quickly in the new year.\n\n Just as we're scaling our manufacturing facility, hundreds of our suppliers are also scaling their production to match our vehicle ramp rate. Our procurement team has remained nimble and continues to work with our supplier partners across all tiers to mitigate issues stemming from our supply chain delay of market delay to market and the Covid pandemic. Given the uncertainty within the supply chain, we decide to carry higher inventory levels than presumably assumed to help ensure we consistently have parts to build. The good news is we do not believe any of our supply chain challenges represent long-term systemic issues.\n\nRivian in 2022 also plans to begin building a second U.S. factory, in Georgia. That factory, however, won't produce saleable vehicles until 2024.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":116,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9955675437,"gmtCreate":1675421223329,"gmtModify":1676539001664,"author":{"id":"4091287517223550","authorId":"4091287517223550","name":"aceralvin","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/008eed5fba8061ff8355aa7e99bf06b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4091287517223550","idStr":"4091287517223550"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I read investment books and crypto books. Since November, investors of TWLO stock faced downward selling pressure after investors shunned high valuation stocks. Despite the volatility, why is Twilio a compelling worthwhile long-term investment?
\n
TWLO Stock Under Pressure
\n
Twilio announced third-quarter revenue of $740.2 million. Losses almost doubled from $112.3 million last year to $232.3 million. Still, on a non-GAAP EPS basis, it earned a penny, or $8.2 million. Even after losing 10% of its value in the month and 40% from 52-week highs, the market capitalization is almost $50 billion. Investors are nervous that the small profit will not rise in the coming quarters.
\n
Fortunately, Twilio’s quarter revenue is growing consistently in the low 60% range. Revenue growthof 46% in Q2/2020(slide 5) is a low point. Given the increasing uncertainties from Covid-19, markets are worried that Twilio’s business growth may lose momentum. It will get there by following its product roadmap in the next few years. It has plenty of cash on hand ($1.497 billion as of Sept. 30, 2021) for mergers in acquisitions. After a few big purchases in the last year, Twilio will take its time to acquire other firms to fuel growth.
\n
Since company targets still trade at premiums, Twilio will be selective about its opportunities. So far in December, three SPACs a day are being created. While that is below the first quarter’s record pace, it brings the total amount held by the hundreds of SPACs seeking private companies to take public in the next two years to roughly $160 billion.
\n
The cash committed to venture-capital firms and private-equity firms focused on rapidly growing companies but not yet spent also is ballooning. So-called dry powder hit about $440 billion for venture capitalists and roughly $310 billion for growth-focused PE firms earlier this month, according to Preqin.
\n
Despite billions of dollars in lost market value for publicly listed startups, the cash hoards represent buoyant demand from investors with interest rates near zero and stock indexes at or near records. They show how SPACs and private markets have been more resilient than many analysts expected, particularly with regulators ratcheting up scrutiny of so-called blank-check companies. Many analysts also expect interest rates to climb in the years ahead, potentially making moonshot bets on early-stage companies less attractive.
\n
Startups currently have several paths to access the cash, investors and executives say, particularly because a large chunk is flooding to companies working to decarbonize the economy. SPACs and other financiers often engage in bidding duels known on Wall Street as “SPAC-offs,” helping keep money flowing into startups.
\n
“There’s just so much money in the world chasing growth and returns,” said Bill Gross, who founded startup incubator Idealab.
\n
Sometimes confused with the famous bond investor Bill Gross, Idealab’s Mr. Gross is chief executive of concentrated solar power startup Heliogen Inc. Heliogen, which doesn’t expect substantial revenue until 2023, is going public in a$2 billion SPAC deal. Another Idealab company, Energy Vault Inc.,unveiled a $1.6 billion SPAC merger in September.
\n
Outside of SPACs, cash is piling into startups at unprecedented rates from venture-capital firms and hedge funds such as Tiger Global Management LLC that traditionally were more focused on public companies. Nearly 340 new unicorn startups—or about one each day—have privately raised money at valuations north of $1 billion this year, more than triple the total from last year, PitchBook data show.
\n
In the late summer, Mike Xu, CEO of food-distribution startup GrubMarket, began looking for $50 million of new funding for his business, which he said is profitable. By November, demand proved so high he ended up securing $240 million from investors—which itself was lower than what many wanted to commit. That included a $40 million commitment from Tiger Global that came together about a week after he began discussions with the New York-based investor.
\n
“It just moved extremely fast,” he said of the investment round valuing the firm at over $1.2 billion. “It was way more than we expected.” GrubMarket also secured funds managed by BlackRock Inc.
\n
Carbon Capture Inc., a startup working to remove carbon emissions directly from the atmosphere that also is backed by Mr. Gross’s Idealab, recently raised $35 million in its first round from investors including Salesforce Inc. co-CEO Marc Benioff’s venture firm.
\n
Many startups also have found excited investors at large technology companies, pension funds, and sovereign-wealth funds.
\n
The fundraising frenzy is continuing even though sentiment toward newly public startups has cooled. An exchange-traded fund that tracks companies that went public through SPACs is down about 25% for the year. Meanwhile, an ETF of companies that recently did traditional initial public offerings has slumped roughly 15% in the past three months.
\n

\n
SPACs are in focus for many investors because they have taken Wall Street and Silicon Valley by storm as a new way to quickly raise cash and go public. A SPAC is a shell firm that raises money and lists on a stock exchange with the sole intent of merging with a private firm to take it public. After regulators approve the deal, the private firm replaces the SPAC in the stock market.
\n
One reason for SPACs’ sudden ubiquity is that startups are allowed to make business projections when going public that aren’t allowed in traditional IPOs.
\n
Many have struggled to meet those targets or have hit business snags, sending shares tumbling.Of the nearly 200 companies that have gone public through SPAC deals this year, about 75% have share prices below the SPAC’s listing price, according to SPAC Research. Nearly 40 companies have lost more than 50% of their value.
\n
Regulators have investigated several companies that went public this way after short sellers alleged wrongdoing, while multiple CEOs of newly listed electric-vehicle startups have resigned. Many analysts say SPACs allow startups to go public before they are ready.
\n
Yet investors continue to pour money into emerging companies in any way they can, in search of the next DoorDash Inc.or Airbnb Inc., whose early backers have been well rewarded. Many deals are tied to fighting climate change, with investors also riding the momentum inTeslaInc.and others linked to the energy transition.
\n
“I would expect valuations will continue being driven up,” said John Carrington, CEO of clean-energy storage firm Stem Inc. “It’s an industry that needs a lot of capital, for better or worse.” Stem’s market value has roughly doubled to $2.8 billion after it completed a SPAC deal earlier this year. The company had about $40 million in sales in the third quarter.
\n
Moving forward, some analysts expect a large gap between the winners and losers from the boom.
\n
“The availability of SPAC capital and of private capital gives companies options, but ultimately, the problems are caused by bringing the wrong company public or the wrong valuation,” said Mike Ryan, CEO of Bullet Point Network, a financial analytics company.
