Renewed selling on fears of a recession dragged the Dow Jones Industrial Average  lower on Friday and pushed the S&P 500  into correction territory. The 30-stock Dow fell 366.71 points, or 1.12% to close at 32,417.59. The S&P 500  slipped 0.48% to finish the session at 4,117.37, closing 10.3% lower from this year’s peak on July 31. The Dow was pressured by declines in JPMorgan Chase after CEO Jamie Dimon said he planned to sell 1 million shares next year.

TSMC to up Arizona investment to $40 billion with second semiconductor chip plant. The investment by TSMC is one of the largest foreign investments in U.S. history, and the largest in the state of Arizona. Semiconductor chips are used in everything from computers and smartphones to cars, microwaves and health-care devices. Once the plants open, they will produce enough chips to meet the U.S. annual demand. The announcement comes in wake of the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act which was signed into law in early August. Asia-Pacific markets mixed; Beijing eases some Covid measures. Shares in the Asia-Pacific were mixed on Tuesday after Wall Street sold off overnight on fears that the Fed will keep increasing interest rates. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was 0.75% lower in the final hour of trade, with the Hang Seng Tech index declining 2.04% – despite Beijing easing some Covid test requirements for the city. Trump snubs Twitter after Musk announces reactivation of ex-president’s account. Donald Trump on Saturday said he had no interest in returning to Twitter even as a slim majority voted in favor of reinstating the former U.S. President, who was banned from the social media service for inciting violence, in a poll organized by new owner Elon Musk. FTX will sell or restructure global empire, CEO says. FTX’s new CEO said on Saturday that the bankrupt crypto exchange is looking to sell or restructure its global empire. “Based on our review over the past week, we are pleased to learn that many regulated or licensed subsidiaries of FTX, within and outside of the United States, have solvent balance sheets, responsible management and valuable franchises,” FTX chief John Ray, said in a statement. Ray’s statement came with a flurry of Saturday morning filings in Delaware bankruptcy court. The major averages ticked higher in afternoon trading Friday to end the day on an upbeat note as investors assessed tougher language from Federal Reserve speakers and pored over the latest earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.59%, to 33,745.69, while the S&P 500 climbed 0.48% to 3,965.34. The Nasdaq Composite finished just 0.01% above the flat line at 11,146.06.
