While optimism that the Fed would slow the pace of rate increases had stoked a 14% rally since mid-October, investor moods have now darkened with worries that such a move, when it does come, will be the mark of an economy laid low.</p><p>Already signs are emerging that the growth is buckling under the Fed’s aggressive tightening. The US services sector contracted last month. Although the labor market remains sturdy, some weakness has appeared, most recently in another rise in continuing claims for jobless benefits. At the same time, inflation may have peaked but it’s still elevated enough to keep the Fed vigilant, raising the risk it will overtighten.</p><p>“We will shift from seeing ‘bad data’ as being ‘good’ to bad data being bad because it is a signal the economy is weakening faster and worse than most expected,” said Peter Tchir, head of macro strategy at Academy Securities.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a05fedefafb78c09c5d8ea58583fc9b8\" tg-width=\"930\" tg-height=\"523\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Markets have started trading the stream of gloomy economic news as bad, rather than a reason to rally on the prospect for easier Fed policy. At the same time, inflation remains elevated — evidenced by an unexpectedly rapid rise in producer prices last month — and the central bank will render its final policy verdict of the year Wednesday. Taken together, it was enough to squash the fall rally.</p><p>Since equities peaked on the final day of November, energy shares have led the retreat, a departure from all three previous selloffs of 2022 when raging inflation spurred demand for materials producers. Companies that are more sensitive to the economy, like financial firms and makers of consumer products, are among the laggards in December.</p><p>The shift in narrative is also obvious in fixed income. Earlier in 2022 when the inflation scare was raging, bonds tumbled in each of the three instances when the S&amp;P 500 fell at least 10% from a peak. Now bonds have begun to reclaim their place as a recession hedge. On Wednesday, a rally in long-dated debt pulled 30-year yields below 3.5%, a level last seen in September. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond exchange-traded fund (ticker TLT) has climbed 9% in the last three weeks.</p><p>“If you’re buying stocks based on the idea that lower interest rates are coming at some point in the future, unfortunately that implies that a weaker economy is also coming at some point in the future,” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. “So be very careful what you wish for.”</p><p>The message was endorsed at the highest echelons of Wall Street in recent days, where bank chiefs had a uniformly grim outlook for slowing growth and corporate earnings. Even sellside analysts, predisposed to talk up assets they sell, have been sounding notably downbeat, predicting a decline in 2023. The average projection of strategists tracked by Bloomberg is for the S&amp;P 500 to end next year at just 4,009 — their most pessimistic call since at least 1999.</p><p>Positioning and trading patterns also showed a shift away from risk assets. Investors exited global stocks at the fastest pace in five months, dumping $35 billion in the last three weeks after they’d amassed $23 billion just a week earlier, according to EPFR data. Signals in the breadth of moves also reinforced the fleeting nature of recent gains, mirroring conditions that presaged the end of rallies in March and August.</p><p>Technical levels that had spurred buying in November buckled in the week. The S&amp;P 500 failed to hold above its 200-day moving average and then slid through a retracement level that had given succor to bulls.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b81c71a46de6cc7f194a42728b18eebc\" tg-width=\"930\" tg-height=\"523\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>What complicates things further is that the November’s equity rally has triggered the fastest easing in financial conditions since March 2020, according to a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. gauge, casting doubts on the Fed’s ability to switch to looser policy starting next year.</p><p>Fed policymakers appear determined to see their tightening campaign through to peak of about 5%, after being caught out by the intensity and staying power of price pressures. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond exchange-traded fund (ticker TLT) has climbed 9% in the last three weeks.“If you’re buying stocks based on the idea that lower interest rates are coming at some point in the future, unfortunately that implies that a weaker economy is also coming at some point in the future,” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. “So be very careful what you wish for.”The message was endorsed at the highest echelons of Wall Street in recent days, where bank chiefs had a uniformly grim outlook for slowing growth and corporate earnings. There is no minimum market capitalization requirement to be eligible for inclusion, but stocks must have an average daily trading volume of at least 200,000 shares, among other criteria, to be listed.</p><p>Joining the index can benefit a company by providing increased equity trading liquidity, a lower cost of capital and heightened visibility from investors. The analyst believes “sentiment-driven fund flow is the current key share price driver and revenue recovery is the key determinant of market sentiment.”That is a bit of problem, then. Because Yao expects weak China consumption in the September quarter (F2Q23) to impact the revenue outlook.Since late August, Covid has once again been a disruptive force in a host of cities across China, and as such, Yao expects “limited improvement” in Alibaba’s core-core CMR (customer-management revenue) compared to the June quarter.The analyst sees the September quarter’s CMR falling by 4% from the same period last year, hardly any better than the June quarter’s 5% drop. On account of “low visibility of consumer sentiment improvement” or any relaxion of the Covid policies, the decline will continue in the December quarter, albeit at a slower pace (Yao expects a 2% year-over-year decline vs. anticipation of a positive turn previously).In contrast, given Alibaba’s firm commitment to cost-cutting and efficiency-improving measures, Yao sees “potential upside to consensus bottom-line projections.”However, that might not have enough of a positive effect right now. “Alibaba’s weakening revenue outlook in the near term could continue to weigh on the share price despite an unchanged, or even potentially better, profit outlook,” the analyst said, before summing up, “Nonetheless, we believe Alibaba’s share price is attractive on a 12-month view on 1) profit growth recovery to 20%+ in FY2024, 2) current consensus FY2024 PE of only 9x.”To this end, Yao rates BABA shares an Overweight (i.e., Buy) along with a $135 price target. This figure leaves room for 12-month share appreciation of ~69%. announced its maiden acquisition since its IPO last November.</p><p>The data centre REIT has agreed to purchase a 25% stake in a freehold data centre in Frankfurt, Germany, for around US$558 million from its sponsor, Digital Realty Trust (NYSE: DLR).</p><p>In addition, Digital Core REIT will have the option to acquire up to an 89.9% interest in the aforementioned Frankfurt data centre and a 90% interest in a data centre in Dallas, US.</p><p>Whether the REIT manager will take up the option will depend on its ability to raise capital successfully to partially finance the transaction.</p><p>Should the fundraising not take place, the transaction will be purely debt-funded and only involve the 25% stake in the Frankfurt data centre.</p><p>The Frankfurt facility has a weighted average lease expiry (WALE) of 4.7 years and is 91% occupied, while the Dallas data centre has a WALE of 15.4 years and is fully occupied.</p><p>Should both transactions go through, Digital Core REIT’s portfolio will increase from US$1.4 billion to US$2 billion.</p><p>The debt-funded scenario will result in a 2% increase in Digital Core REIT’s fiscal 2022’s first half (1H2022) distribution per unit (DPU).</p><p>With equity fundraising, the accretion to DPU will be 3.1%, raising 1H2022’s DPU from US$0.0206 to US$0.0212.</p><p>Aggregate leverage stands at 25.7% currently and will increase to 33% under the debt-funded scenario and 37.5% under the equity fundraising option.</p><p>Either way, the deal appears to be within Digital Core REIT’s financial means.</p><h3>US Federal Reserve</h3><p>The US Federal Reserve has hiked the federal funds rate once again during its recent meeting, raising it by 0.75 percentage points.</p><p>It was the third consecutive 0.75 percentage point increase and takes the policy rate to a range of between 3% to 3.25%.</p><p>This move was a widely-anticipated one as the central bank vowed to push on in its fight against the highest inflation the country has seen in four decades.</p><p>Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell made it clear that “some pain” was necessary to bring inflation down to the central bank’s target of 2%.</p><p>These hawkish remarks imply that there are more rate hikes necessary for months to come if inflation does not decline.</p><p>This latest statement suggests that the central bank now sees the need for a more prolonged monetary tightening cycle that will not let up easily, contrary to what many had expected.</p><p>Back in the 1980s, it took numerous rate hikes and a recession to finally bring inflation under control.</p><p>Economists now project that the Federal Reserve will hike rates by another 1.25 percentage points this year with more next year.</p><p>They also expect that no Flight Services for as much as US$3 billion.</p><p>The latter was founded in 1971 and operates in more than 160 major airports in over 20 countries.</p><p>The report also claimed that the Singaporean airline food caterer had sounded out financing options from Worldwide Flight Services’ private equity owner, Cerberus Capital Management.</p><p>In response, SATS released a terse statement about this potential acquisition, stating that no definitive terms or formal legal documentation have been agreed upon.</p><p>It also pointed out that the Bloomberg report contained “materially inaccurate facts”.</p><p>Meanwhile, shares of the ground handler fell sharply on the news, dipping by 5.1% from S$4.09 to S$3.88.</p><p>Investors should note that the transaction price mentioned by Bloomberg is equivalent to around S$4.26 billion.</p><p>SATS’ market capitalisation is now close to S$4.3 billion.</p><p>Assuming that the transaction takes place, SATS will be purchasing a company at a price that
