That, in turn, might allow Apple to better compete for a broader customer demographic and adapt to changing economic conditions that grow out of a shrinking money supply. With a market cap near 2.4 trillion dollars, there is a lot that has to go right for Apple to continue growing at a meaningful rate. There are only so many people in the world with enough cash, enough internet access, enough electricity, and enough interest to buy the next iPhone. Google search trends for the term “iPhone” reveal a long and steady decline in interest, and shows a similar trend measuring searches for “iPad”. If the recent burst in profitability was tied to a rare bump in the money stock, Apple could be in danger of returning to a slower growth, lower margin, and lower net income environment. hunt for bargains, while the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished well above their session lows.

After falling almost 3% earlier in the day and as much as 10.37% below its intraday record level reached on Nov. 22, the technology-heavy Nasdaq pointed sharply higher to regain all its losses for the day in afternoon trading.

While investors spent the morning fretting about rising bond yields and what this week's inflation data might mean for U.S. Federal Reserve monetary policy tightening, others took advantage of earlier nerves to buy the dip.

"We've gotten to the point where you wonder if the roller coaster has peaked and is heading straight down. But fundamentally there's a lot of buyers in this market buying on the dip," said Rick Meckler, a partner of Cherry Lane Investments, a family investment office in New Vernon, New Jersey who attributed much of the afternoon strength to retail investors buying favorite stocks such as Tesla .

Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Investment Management in Chicago also attributed the late session comeback to dip-buyers looking at U.S. Treasury yields fall from their peaks of the day.

"Some of the tech names are off 5 to 10 percent or more, and people are looking at that and going that looks pretty good - time to snap them up," said Nolte.

"The other thing though to keep an eye on is what happens to interest rates because that has really been what's been dragging technology. We saw little bit of a reversal late in the day in (Treasury yields). OXY stock has plenty of runway.

Source: Pavel Kapysh / Shutterstock.com

So far in June, like most stocks, Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) has moved lower, even as the price of crude oil remains at elevated levels. Granted, crude oil has pulled back since climbing above $120 per barrel earlier this month, but the double-digit drop in OXY stock appears to be an overreaction to this and to other market uncertainties.

Instead of being a sign that things are topping out and it’s time to sell, you should view its latest price action a different way: as an opportunity to start building, or add to, a position in this oil and gas company.

Why? The market right now is focusing too much on the future price of oil and not enough on other catalysts that will help send it to higher prices. While up 100% so far this year at the time of writing, it has plenty more runway.

OXY Stock and the Next Move for Oil Prices

More bullish predictions of $150 or even $200 for oil prove remain to be seen. Having said that, there’s much to suggest oil prices could stay elevated over the next year. For instance, the current forecast from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) calls for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil to trade for an average of $93.24 per barrel in 2023. It may be a while before oil falls back to levels last seen at the start of 2022, which were around $75 per barrel. So, what could this mean for OXY stock?

For one, the company’s profitability stands to remain at levels well above its reported earnings in the preceding years, even if oil moves slightly lower. This is likely to enable it to maintain a valuation at or near current levels. The market has already heavily discounted future earnings, as seen in the stock’s low forward multiple of 5.9x.

That’s not all. Occidental Petroleum has two places it can put these elevated earnings to work. By doing so, it would give the stock long-term upside potential that doesn’t hinge completely on oil prices hitting new highs.

Two Non Oil-Price Catalysts for Occidental

OXY stock has two catalysts beyond just the possibility of crude oil prices continuing to surge. First, something that’s already playing out: the deleveraging of this company’s balance sheet.

Per FitchRatings,in the recent upgrade of its debt, Occidental Petroleum reduced long-term debt by $8.1 billion year-to-date. That’s on top of the $6.4 billion in debt reduction achieved in 2021. This reduces interest costs and increases cash flow. It also opens the door for increased dividends and share repurchases. All of this will have a positive impact on its stock price performance.

Second, something that could help move the needle in the long-term:its big move into carbon capture. The company plans to spend up to $1 billion to build a direct air capture (DAC) facility. OXY stock has plenty of runway.Source: Pavel Kapysh / Shutterstock.comSo far in June, like most stocks, Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) has moved lower, even as the price of crude oil remains at elevated levels. Granted, crude oil has pulled back since climbing above $120 per barrel earlier this month, but the double-digit drop in OXY stock appears to be an overreaction to this and to other market uncertainties.Instead of being a sign that things are topping out and it’s time to sell, you should view its latest price action a different way: as an opportunity to start building, or add to, a position in this oil and gas company. Why? The market right now is focusing too much on the future price of oil and not enough on other catalysts that will help send it to higher prices. While up 100% so far this year at the time of writing, it has plenty more runway.OXY Stock and the Next Move for Oil PricesMore bullish predictions of $150 or even $200 for oil prove remain to be seen. The market has already heavily discounted future earnings, as seen in the stock’s low forward multiple of 5.9x.That’s not all. Occidental Petroleum has two places it can put these elevated earnings to work. By doing so, it would give the stock long-term upside potential that doesn’t hinge completely on oil prices hitting new highs. Two Non Oil-Price Catalysts for OccidentalOXY stock has two catalysts beyond just the possibility of crude oil prices continuing to surge. First, something that’s already playing out: the deleveraging of this company’s balance sheet.Per FitchRatings,in the recent upgrade of its debt, Occidental Petroleum reduced long-term debt by $8.1 billion year-to-date. That’s on top of the $6.4 billion in debt reduction achieved in 2021. This reduces interest costs and increases cash flow. It also opens the door for increased dividends and share repurchases. All of this will have a positive impact on its stock price performance.Second, something that could help move the needle in the long-term:its big move into carbon capture. The company plans to spend up to $1 billion to build a direct air capture (DAC) facility. Monetizing this technology through the sale of carbon credits, Occidental Petroleum Chief Executive Officer Vicki Hollub has said it “can […] be another value-adding business” for the energy giant.Moving into DAC decarbonization provides it with another benefit: the ability to sell “net zero oil.” Like I discussed back in March, net zero oil could end up being in high demand as businesses look to stay in compliance with carbon neutrality regulations. The Verdict on OXY StockOccidental Petroleum currently earns an “A” rating in myPortfolio Grader. Among the scores of stocks that have gone on sale lately, this is a key one to consider. The shares have clearly been hit by shifting levels of concern over the pandemic. Yet the stock is still up about 12% in the past year, and the company commands a sizable market cap of $105 billion.

Investors might have some pause to buy the stock right now since it still sells at 63 times free cash flow. Yet, the company has a leading position in the travel industry, a history of robust growth, and results are rebounding strongly with revenue up 67% year over year in the third quarter.

Plus, it's got a large and expanding addressable market and is already showing signs of building a tremendously powerful brand. So even at these high levels, Airbnb could still turn a small investment into a big one. Let's dive deeper.

Breaking down the numbers

If you invested $10,000 in Airbnb stock, it would need to climb 100 times in value to reach $1 million. That's too much to ask for the next 10 years, but it's not unreasonable to expect Airbnb to deliver this amount if you could hold its shares over the next 30 years. That would represent an annualized return of about 16.5%. Not many companies can grow at this rate for that long, but if Airbnb can cement itself as the top brand in travel, it could be one of the few great businesses that make early investors into millionaires.

It's certainly addressing a large market -- an estimated $3.4 trillion globally each year. Short-term stays, like business trips and weekend getaways, make up about $1.8 trillion of the market with long-term stays and other experiences representing the balance. Long-term stays are a huge growth opportunity, given the increasing interest in remote work. This is why management expects the demand for long-term stays to accelerate coming out of the pandemic.

Airbnb still has just a fraction of that addressable market, giving it plenty of room for growth. Over the past year, the company's gross booking value came to $41 billion, or just a little over 1% of the total market. Moreover, the market is going to expand. Over the past decade, excluding the blip from the pandemic, travel spending has increased about 3% to 5% annually. If it continues to grow around 4% annually over the next 30 years, that would put Airbnb's addressable market at around $10 trillion.

Airbnb would need to capture more than a third of that opportunity to grow its gross booking value 100 times, and therefore also see a proportionate increase in revenue and profits, which is what ultimately makes a stock go up.

Keys to future growth

While it's nearly impossible to forecast exactly what a business will look like way out in the future, here are a few things that should build confidence in Airbnb's growth trajectory.

For one thing, it has a strong brand. Even if you have never used Airbnb, you likely know a friend or family member who has. After all, there were nearly 80 million nights and experiences booked on Airbnb in the third quarter. A strong brand will be key to capturing a sizable chunk of its addressable market.

Another good sign: management has been shifting its marketing strategy to be more brand-centric and less dependent on search engines. During the first quarter of 2021, over 90% of Airbnb's traffic came from customers seeking Airbnb directly as opposed to finding it through a marketing channel. That's a sign of growing brand awareness.

Competition is always a risk since new entrants might emerge down the road, forcing Airbnb to lower service fees to maintain demand and revenue growth. The shares have clearly been hit by shifting levels of concern over the pandemic. Yet the stock is still up about 12% in the past year, and the company commands a sizable market cap of $105 billion.Investors might have some pause to buy the stock right now since it still sells at 63 times free cash flow. Yet, the company has a leading position in the travel industry, a history of robust growth, and results are rebounding strongly with revenue up 67% year over year in the third quarter.Plus, it's got a large and expanding addressable market and is already showing signs of building a tremendously powerful brand. So even at these high levels, Airbnb could still turn a small investment into a big one. Let's dive deeper.Image source: Getty Images.Breaking down the numbersIf you invested $10,000 in Airbnb stock, it would need to climb 100 times in value to reach $1 million. This is why management expects the demand for long-term stays to accelerate coming out of the pandemic.Airbnb still has just a fraction of that addressable market, giving it plenty of room for growth. Over the past year, the company's gross booking value came to $41 billion, or just a little over 1% of the total market. Moreover, the market is going to expand. Over the past decade, excluding the blip from the pandemic, travel spending has increased about 3% to 5% annually. If it continues to grow around 4% annually over the next 30 years, that would put Airbnb's addressable market at around $10 trillion.Airbnb would need to capture more than a third of that opportunity to grow its gross booking value 100 times, and therefore also see a proportionate increase in revenue and profits, which is what ultimately makes a stock go up.Keys to future growthWhile it's nearly impossible to forecast exactly what a business will look like way out in the future, here are a few things that should build confidence in Airbnb's growth trajectory. For one thing, it has a strong brand. Even if you have never used Airbnb, you likely know a friend or family member who has. After all, there were nearly 80 million nights and experiences booked on Airbnb in the third quarter. A strong brand will be key to capturing a sizable chunk of its addressable market.Another good sign: management has been shifting its marketing strategy to be more brand-centric and less dependent on search engines. During the first quarter of 2021, over 90% of Airbnb's traffic came from customers seeking Airbnb directly as opposed to finding it through a marketing channel. That's a sign of growing brand awareness.Competition is always a risk since new entrants might emerge down the road, forcing Airbnb to lower service fees to maintain demand and revenue growth. But Airbnb is already widely recognized, which is a competitive advantage. Its name has nearly become a synonym for a place to stay -- similar to how \"Google\" replaced \"search.\"I believe Airbnb's record of growth from its humble beginnings in the co-founders' San Francisco apartment in 2007, the size of the travel opportunity, and its growing brand power point to a long-term winner.
