Investors, analysts, journalists, and legislators poke, prod, test, and study the companies down to a microscopic level. And yet this quarter, each one of them managed to surprise. Facebook parent Meta Platforms tanked the entire market on Thursday after its weak report, only to see stocks rescued a day later by Amazon’s impressive growth.

Now that we’ve had a few minutes to breathe, here are some thoughts on tech’s crazy week:

Amazon’s strategy of diversification is paying off: This was the quarter that Amazon clearly demonstrated that it’s far more than an e-tailer. Its Amazon Web Services cloud business is on fire—it’s arguably a more valuable (and far less cyclical) business than the company’s legacy e-commerce arm. It is no accident that founder Jeff Bezos chose Andy Jassy—who built and ran AWS—to be his successor as CEO.

But there’s more to the quarter. Amazon’s advertising business generated $10 billion in sales in the latest period, having doubled in a bit more than a year. It now generates more ad dollars than Google’s YouTube. People come to the Amazon store with intent—no matter what you search for, you will see an assortment of sponsored listings, i.e., advertising. I did a search for “staple gun,” just to prove the point, and the results included more than a dozen sponsored listings.

Amazon’s third-party services business, meanwhile, now has an annual run rate of more than $120 billion. The business has become an indispensable channel for vendors of every variety, thanks to its warehousing and delivery services.

Amazon has built one of the most effective logistics networks on Earth—some analyst estimates have Amazon delivering more packages this year than $200 billion market-value United Parcel Service (UPS). Even after Friday’s 14% rally, Amazon shares are still down year to date, following just a minimal gain in 2021. The stock looks like a bargain.

You can’t overstate the importance of cloud computing: One of the most important themes from the last two weeks is that the cloud businesses at Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet just continue to get better. All three turned in better-than-expected results. Microsoft reported 46% growth for its Azure business in the December quarter—and projected even faster growth in the March quarter. Google Cloud revenue grew 45% for the second straight quarter. And AWS helped offset softness in Amazon’s core e-commerce business, with revenue growth improving to 40% from 39%, accelerating for the fourth-straight quarter. The cloud arms of these three giants are the best enterprise computing businesses in the market.

Raising the stakes: Amazon last week raised the monthly rate on Amazon Prime by 15% for monthly payers to $15.99; annual subscription will see a 17% increase to $139. The company last increased the Prime subscription rate in 2018, and costs for labor and delivery are rising, so a price bump seems rational.

The move comes just weeks after Netflix (NFLX) instituted a price increase for its subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. It will be interesting to see the consumer reaction, but my suspicion is that elasticity is high—the services are valuable, and there aren’t easy substitutions.

The price hikes indicate just how confident Amazon and Netflix are about their subscriptions. Here’s a little perspective: the New York Times (NYT), which in recent weeks announced deals to acquire the sports news site the Athletic and the popular word game Wordle, has set a goal of 15 million total subscribers by 2027. Both Amazon and Netflix have more than 200 million subscribers apiece.

Spend wisely: Alphabet last week declared a 20-for-1 stock split, which will bring the share price down to around the $150 range. But what they aren’t doing is paying actual dividends. They should. The company has $140 billion in cash and equivalents; it generated $18.6 billion in free cash flow in the latest quarter.

Meta just highlighted the risks of choosing buybacks over dividends. The Facebook parent bought back $33 billion of stock over just the last two quarters. Given the Meta selloff last week, that cash was basically set on fire. Had the company instead declared a special dividend, it could have paid holders close to $14 a share.

The shakeout isn’t over: The underlying issues that have plagued tech stocks for months are still in place. Interest rates are going to head higher still. Chips remain in short supply. Inflation is uncomfortably high. The market’s appetite for speculative names is low. There’s a reason the best performing tech stocks so far this year are cheap—old school names like VMware (VMW), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Dell Technologies (DELL), and IBM (IBM).

In the past two weeks we’ve learned that more than ever the market likes consistency. That’s what made Meta’s earnings and outlook this past week so troubling: Facebook is no longer the reliable performer investors have come to expect. But the rest of Big Tech still fits the bill. Apple and Microsoft consistently beat expectations with products customers want. And you can say the same for Google and Amazon. Once again, Big Tech was the earnings season winner.

","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Here Are the Tech Stocks to Buy After a Crazy Week of Earnings
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHere Are the Tech Stocks to Buy After a Crazy Week of Earnings \n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-02-05 16:00 GMT+8 Barrons\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Tech investors just survived what could be the most tumultuous stretch of earnings we’ve ever seen. The tech megacaps— Alphabet (ticker: GOOGL), Amazon.com (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Meta Platforms (FB), ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMZN":"亚马逊","GOOGL":"谷歌A","NFLX":"奈飞","AAPL":"苹果"},"source_url":"https://www.barrons.com/articles/tech-stocks-to-buy-after-a-crazy-week-of-earnings-51644019511?mod=hp_LATEST","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1105297016","content_text":"Tech investors just survived what could be the most tumultuous stretch of earnings we’ve ever seen. The tech megacaps— Alphabet (ticker: GOOGL), Amazon.com (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Meta Platforms (FB), and Microsoft (MSFT)—are some of the most widely scrutinized institutions on Earth. Meanwhile the consumer discretionary

also put pressure on major indexes after morning data showed a December decline in retail sales and a souring of consumer sentiment.

JPMorgan Chase & Co tumbled after reporting weaker performance at its trading arm. The bellwether lender also warned that soaring inflation, the looming threat of Omicron and trading revenues would challenge industry growth in coming months.

Along with JPMorgan, big decliners putting pressure on the Dow included Goldman Sachs, American Express and Home Depot.

$Citigroup Inc(C-N)$ shares fell after it reported a 26% drop in fourth-quarter profit, while asset manager BlackRock Inc

fell after missing quarterly revenue expectations.

The earnings kick-off had investors taking profits in the S&P 500 bank subsector after it had hit an intraday high in the previous session. Financial stocks had been outperforming the S&P recently as investors bet that the Federal Reserve's expected interest rate hikes will boost bank profits.

"The bar was very high going into (JPMorgan) results. This year’s show is a step forward, and we believe it’s a necessary and meaningful one,\" NRF chief executive Matthew Shay said in a LinkedIn post.Executives from Walmart , Chewy , Best Buyand cloud-based retail platform NewStore are pressing on with plans to attend the 15,000-person retail trade show.NewStore is hosting a booth but dialing back external activities for the retail show, according to chief marketing officer Phil Granof. The company is canceling networking dinners, one-on-one meetings and halving the number of employees at the conference to 20 from 40 in previous years.Granof said that as larger companies pull out, there is less competition for attention. Still, big corporations are not the only ones canceling plans. Gaming platform Unity said it dropped out \"after taking into account the current case numbers and employee and vendor comfort level.\"\"I cancelled my plans last week. Missing it two years in a row after 15 yrs. [This year] would have been my 17th,\" ShiSh Shridhar, global retail head of Microsoft for Startups, said on Twitter.NRF in December released its updated COVID protocols, ensuring the conference had the green light to go on with 25,000 planned attendees and 900 exhibitors. By Jan. 12, the NRF said there were 15,000 confirmed attendees and 750 vendors.\"The irony, of course, is as the attendance drops, the conference becomes safer,\" Granof said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":139,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9062768550,"gmtCreate":1652108760071,"gmtModify":1676535031348,"author":{"id":"4104765823183690","authorId":"4104765823183690","name":"sowtat","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/1c2abc8f3ecd4392cc44d5f95b78d70a","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4104765823183690","idStr":"4104765823183690"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$YZJ Fin Hldg(YF8.SI)$no change","listText":"$YZJ Fin Hldg(YF8.SI)$no change","text":"$YZJ Fin Hldg(YF8.SI)$no change","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3994ce7343a8ac24b36b453d8a36e696","width":"720","height":"1280"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9062768550","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":210,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9004362449,"gmtCreate":1642512150690,"gmtModify":1676533717043,"author":{"id":"4104765823183690","authorId":"4104765823183690","name":"sowtat","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/1c2abc8f3ecd4392cc44d5f95b78d70a","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4104765823183690","idStr":"4104765823183690"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"ok","listText":"ok","text":"ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9004362449","repostId":"1153111621","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1153111621","pubTimestamp":1642508076,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1153111621?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-18 20:14","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Clover Health Stock Investors Will Need to Buy Into Tech Chief’s Vision","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1153111621","media":"InvestorPlace","summary":"Bigger competitors are already copying the innovations of software and Medicare Advantage plans","content":"

I remain of two minds regarding Clover Health Investments(NASDAQ:CLOV). Including the nearly 30% gain in Berkshire's Class A shares in 2021, Buffett has overseen the creation of more than $600 billion in market value, averaged an annual return on Berkshire's stock of over 20%, and delivered an aggregate return on shares in excess of 3,600,000% since the beginning of 1965.

In other words, riding the Oracle of Omaha's coattails can be quite profitable. In 2022, five Buffett stocks, among Berkshire Hathaway's 43 holdings, stand out as exceptional values that can be bought hand over fist.

Berkshire Hathaway CEO, Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.

Amazon

Though Buffett's portfolio is predominantly built around the idea of owning value stocks, e-commerce giant Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is the perfect example of a growth stock that's still an incredible deal.

As many people are likely aware, Amazon is the kingpin of online retail. Last year, eMarketer estimated the company would draw a 41.4% share of all online spending in the United States. The next-closest competitor is Walmart, more than 34 percentage points behind Amazon.

But what's made Amazon's marketplace special is the company's 200 million Prime subscribers. Prime members receive shipping, price, and content perks. Meanwhile, Amazon nets subscriber fees from these 200 million global members that help lift margins and allow it to undercut traditional brick-and-mortar retailers on price.

Amazon also benefits from its leading position in cloud infrastructure services. As of the third quarter, Amazon Web Services (AWS) held a 32% share of global cloud infrastructure spending. More importantly, cloud profit margins are considerably higher than the e-commerce segment. In the third quarter, Amazon generated 62% of its $21.4 billion in operating income from AWS, yet AWS only accounted for 13% of net sales.

With rapidly expanding operating cash flow in Amazon's future, it's a good bet to head higher in 2022 and beyond.

Bristol Myers Squibb

With inflation rising and the Federal Reserve not subtly hinting that it plans to begin raising rates this year, pharmaceutical stock Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) is a Buffett stock value investors can buy hand over fist.

Bristol Myers' success is built on both organic and acquisitive growth. In terms of the former, the company developed oral anticoagulant blockbuster Eliquis in cooperation with Pfizer. The expectation is for Bristol Myers to recognize more than $10 billion in sales from its leading blood thinner in 2021.

Perhaps the more exciting drug is cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which has been approved in 10 indications by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and likely brought in close to $7 billion last year. With Opdivo being examined in dozens of additional clinical studies as both a monotherapy and combination treatment, there are multiple avenues for label expansion and new revenue streams.

In terms of acquisitions, Bristol Myers Squibb made a genius move buying immunology and cancer-drug developer Celgene in late 2019. Though this deal added numerous blockbusters, it's the addition of multiple myeloma drug Revlimid that's most important. Revlimid has a long history of growing sales annually by a double-digit percentage, and looked to be on track for $13 billion in net sales last year.

At only eight times Wall Street's estimated 2022 earnings, and sporting a dividend yield well over 3%, Bristol Myers looks like a steal.

The all-electric Hummer is one of 30 electric vehicles GM plans to launch by 2025. Image source: General Motors.

General Motors

Another Warren Buffett stock that'll get investors' engines revving in 2022 is auto stock General Motors (NYSE:GM).

Despite the auto industry being a slow grower for decades, GM has a multi-decade massive growth opportunity on its doorstep with electric vehicles (EVs). Pretty much every developed country worldwide is coercing or incentivizing automakers to switch production to EVs in an effort to combat climate change. This vehicle replacement cycle will take decades and provide General Motors with steady sales and profit growth potential.

For its part, GM upped its spending forecast on EVs, autonomous vehicles, and batteries in June. The company anticipates spending $35 billion through 2025 to roll out 30 new EVs worldwide. It'll also have two battery production plants up and running by 2023.

Keep in mind that while all eyes are on the domestic market, General Motors has become a brand name in China, too, with annual deliveries nearing the 3 million mark. China is the No. 1 auto market globally. Considering GM's brand name and existing infrastructure, it should have a path to gobble up market share.

Although auto stocks trading at single-digit price-to-earnings ratios are nothing new, it's perhaps no longer warranted given GM's growth prospects.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries

For deep-discount value stock investors, brand-name and generic-drug producer Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA) is the Buffett stock to buy hand over fist in 2022. By "deep discount," I mean a company valued at close to three times forecasted earnings per share this year.

To be clear, Teva has had its fair share of troubles. The company grossly overpaid to acquire generic drugmaker Actavis, shelved its dividend, settled bribery charges, and is facing a number of state-level lawsuits over its role in the opioid crisis. There are valid reasons the stock is inexpensive.

However, Teva has a turnaround specialist as CEO who has a track record of success. Since Kåre Schultz took the reins in late 2017, Teva has shed billions in annual operating expenses, and the company's net debt has been reduced from more than $34 billion to around $22 billion. Schultz has jettisoned noncore assets, as well as used the company's operating cash flow, which usually tops $2 billion annually, to reduce the company's debt and improve its financial flexibility.

Schultz could also play a key role in resolving Teva's litigation. If he's able to orchestrate a deal that involves free or reduced-price medication and a minimal cash component, Teva could soar overnight.

In other words, even though Teva is incredibly profitable, what you're really investing in is turnaround specialist Kåre Schultz continuing to better the company.

Bank of America

A fifth and final Buffett stock to buy hand over fist in 2022 is Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). BofA is Berkshire Hathaway's second-largest holding.

The first thing to understand about bank stocks is they're highly cyclical. This is to say that they perform well when the economy is growing and struggle when recessions rear their head. However, recessions and economic contractions typically last no longer than a couple of quarters. Comparatively, periods of economic expansion are measured in years. Buying Bank of America and simply allowing time to be your ally is often a smart strategy.

Something else to know about Bank of America is that it's the most interest-sensitive of the big banks. In the third quarter, BofA noted that a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would bring in an estimated $7.2 billion in added net interest income. Including the nearly 30% gain in Berkshire's Class A shares in 2021, Buffett has overseen the creation of more than $600 billion in market value, averaged an annual return on Berkshire's stock of over 20%, and delivered an aggregate return on shares in excess of 3,600,000% since the beginning of 1965.In other words, riding the Oracle of Omaha's coattails can be quite profitable. In 2022, five Buffett stocks, among Berkshire Hathaway's 43 holdings, stand out as exceptional values that can be bought hand over fist.Berkshire Hathaway CEO, Warren Buffett. Image source: The Motley Fool.AmazonThough Buffett's portfolio is predominantly built around the idea of owning value stocks, e-commerce giant Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is the perfect example of a growth stock that's still an incredible deal.As many people are likely aware, Amazon is the kingpin of online retail. Meanwhile, Amazon nets subscriber fees from these 200 million global members that help lift margins and allow it to undercut traditional brick-and-mortar retailers on price.Amazon also benefits from its leading position in cloud infrastructure services. With rapidly expanding operating cash flow in Amazon's future, it's a good bet to head higher in 2022 and beyond.Image source: Getty Images.Bristol Myers SquibbWith inflation rising and the Federal Reserve not subtly hinting that it plans to begin raising rates this year, pharmaceutical stock Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) is a Buffett stock value investors can buy hand over fist.Bristol Myers' success is built on both organic and acquisitive growth. In terms of the former, the company developed oral anticoagulant blockbuster Eliquis in cooperation with Pfizer. The expectation is for Bristol Myers to recognize more than $10 billion in sales from its leading blood thinner in 2021.Perhaps the more exciting drug is cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which has been approved in 10 indications by the U.S. Revlimid has a long history of growing sales annually by a double-digit percentage, and looked to be on track for $13 billion in net sales last year.At only eight times Wall Street's estimated 2022 earnings, and sporting a dividend yield well over 3%, Bristol Myers looks like a steal. The all-electric Hummer is one of 30 electric vehicles GM plans to launch by 2025. Image source: General Motors.General MotorsAnother Warren Buffett stock that'll get investors' engines revving in 2022 is auto stock General Motors (NYSE:GM).Despite the auto industry being a slow grower for decades, GM has a multi-decade massive growth opportunity on its doorstep with electric vehicles (EVs). It'll also have two battery production plants up and running by 2023.Keep in mind that while all eyes are on the domestic market, General Motors has become a brand name in China, too, with annual deliveries nearing the 3 million mark. China is the No. 1 auto market globally. Considering GM's brand name and existing infrastructure, it should have a path to gobble up market share.Although auto stocks trading at single-digit price-to-earnings ratios are nothing new, it's perhaps no longer warranted given GM's growth prospects.Image source: Getty Images.Teva Pharmaceutical IndustriesFor deep-discount value stock investors, brand-name and generic-drug producer Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA) is the Buffett stock to buy hand over fist in 2022. By \"deep discount,\" I mean a company valued at close to three times forecasted earnings per share this year.To be clear, Teva has had its fair share of troubles. Schultz has jettisoned noncore assets, as well as used the company's operating cash flow, which usually tops $2 billion annually, to reduce the company's debt and improve its financial flexibility.Schultz could also play a key role in resolving Teva's litigation. If he's able to orchestrate a deal that involves free or reduced-price medication and a minimal cash component, Teva could soar overnight. In other words, even though Teva is incredibly profitable, what you're really investing in is turnaround specialist Kåre Schultz continuing to better the company.Image source: Getty Images.Bank of AmericaA fifth and final Buffett stock to buy hand over fist in 2022 is Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). Buying Bank of America and simply allowing time to be your ally is often a smart strategy.Something else to know about Bank of America is that it's the most interest-sensitive of the big banks. In the third quarter, BofA noted that a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would bring in an estimated $7.2 billion in added net interest income. If the Fed does begin raising rates this year, BofA should reap the biggest rewards on its variable-rate outstanding loans.Bank of America deserves credit for its digitization campaign, too. Nearly 41 million people were banking digitally with BofA at the end of September, with 43% of all sales being completed digitally. That's up from 27% in the comparable quarter three years prior. Digital transactions are considerably cheaper for BoA than in-person or phone-based interactions. With Bank of America on the cusp of an earnings growth explosion, it looks like a solid buy for 2022.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":176,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9007354289,"gmtCreate":1642780265101,"gmtModify":1676533745995,"author":{"id":"4104765823183690","authorId":"4104765823183690","name":"sowtat","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/1c2abc8f3ecd4392cc44d5f95b78d70a","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4104765823183690","idStr":"4104765823183690"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"beware!!!!","listText":"beware!!!!","text":"beware!!!!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9007354289","repostId":"1194174623","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1194174623","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1642778869,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1194174623?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-21 23:27","market":"us","language":"en","title":"U.S. Stocks Continued to Decline, and Big Tech Stocks Slid","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1194174623","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"U.S. stocks continued to decline in morning trading Friday.Nasdaq and S&P 500 both fell more than 1%","content":"

U.S. stocks continued to decline in morning trading Friday.Nasdaq and S&P 500 both fell more than 1%, and big tech stocks slid.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; And while the jury is out on whether all that sound and fury will signify anything, for the first time there are signs that the big-tech backlash could have a substantive impact.

New laws under consideration in Europe, Asia and the U.S. could put sharp limits on how big tech companies can treat smaller competitors and restrict their use of artificial intelligence like facial recognition. Some proposals could ban common practices such as companies giving their own products a boost in their own rankings, something that could have an operational impact, executives and analysts say.

At the same time, regulators globally are advancing dozens of investigations related to competition and privacy that could lead to more than just speeding tickets for tech giants. Under consideration, according to regulators and executives, are orders or settlements that could cut off trans-Atlantic data flows, kneecap some kinds of digital advertising, delay major product changes or force ongoing oversight of activities.

Meta Platforms’ Facebook said in November that it would shut down its facial-recognition system in part because of potential regulations.

Tougher to cash in

To be sure, regulation so far has had little effect on Silicon Valley’s bottom line or valuations. The market value of five of the world’s largest tech companies is $9.31 trillion, up close to fourfold from five years ago, nearly double the growth for the S&P 500 index in that time.

But that could be changing. The fresh wave of scrutiny has already made it more difficult for the companies to cash in on potential growth from acquisitions, says Mark Mahaney, head of internet research at EvercoreInc.’s research arm. In November, the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority directed Meta Platforms Inc.’s Facebookto sell animated-images company Giphy, saying the acquisition would limit competition among platforms and U.K. advertisers.Facebooksays the deal benefits consumers, and it has appealed.

Tech companies are making other changes, too. Facebook announced in November that it would shut down its facial-recognition system in part because of potential regulations.

“There’s definitely a sense of there being a new momentum” for regulation, says Sinead McSweeney,Twitter Inc.’s global vice president for public policy, noting that in recent weeks the company has had to implement new legislative requirements in at least six countries. “It’s on a whole new level.”

Alphabet Inc.’s Google, for instance, has agreed to work closely with the Competition and Markets Authority on its plan to remove cookies, which track online activity, from its Chrome browser. Now Google executives are looking at how to build new appeals processes for content removals on the YouTube video service, and reworking how it handles user and partner information internally, says Kent Walker, senior vice president of global affairs.

“There’s an awful lot on the table right now,” Mr. Walker says. “It’s a challenging exercise because, in many cases, the compliance times are short, and we actually have to start to prepare now for rules before the ink is dried.”

While tech companies say they agree that their industry needs new regulation, they are pushing back against some specific proposals—in part because of the impact they might have. Some tech executives, such as Twitter’s Ms. McSweeney, say they worry requirements in proposed online-content rules could encourage companies to remove content they merely disagree with, chilling free speech.

Google’s Mr. Walker says he is concerned that the definition of an online marketplace in one bill could force the company to notify websites each time their ranking changed in the search engine, a virtually impossible task.

Google offices in New York. The company is reworking how it handles user and partner information internally, an executive says.

What’s the effect?

For their part, advocates for more regulation worry that the big tech companies could emerge unscathed from the newest wave of regulation. And while the jury is out on whether all that sound and fury will signify anything, for the first time there are signs that the big-tech backlash could have a substantive impact.New laws under consideration in Europe, Asia and the U.S. could put sharp limits on how big tech companies can treat smaller competitors and restrict their use of artificial intelligence like facial recognition. Some proposals could ban common practices such as companies giving their own products a boost in their own rankings, something that could have an operational impact, executives and analysts say.At the same time, regulators globally are advancing dozens of investigations related to competition and privacy that could lead to more than just speeding tickets for tech giants. Under consideration, according to regulators and executives, are orders or settlements that could cut off trans-Atlantic data flows, kneecap some kinds of digital advertising, delay major product changes or force ongoing oversight of activities.Meta Platforms’ Facebook said in November that it would shut down its facial-recognition system in part because of potential regulations.Tougher to cash inTo be sure, regulation so far has had little effect on Silicon Valley’s bottom line or valuations. In November, the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority directed Meta Platforms Inc.’s Facebookto sell animated-images company Giphy, saying the acquisition would limit competition among platforms and U.K. advertisers.Facebooksays the deal benefits consumers, and it has appealed.Tech companies are making other changes, too. Facebook announced in November that it would shut down its facial-recognition system in part because of potential regulations.“There’s definitely a sense of there being a new momentum” for regulation, says Sinead McSweeney,Twitter Inc.’s global vice president for public policy, noting that in recent weeks the company has had to implement new legislative requirements in at least six countries. “It’s on a whole new level.”Alphabet Inc.’s Google, for instance, has agreed to work closely with the Competition and Markets Authority on its plan to remove cookies, which track online activity, from its Chrome browser. Now Google executives are looking at how to build new appeals processes for content removals on the YouTube video service, and reworking how it handles user and partner information internally, says Kent Walker, senior vice president of global affairs.“There’s an awful lot on the table right now,” Mr. Walker says. “It’s a challenging exercise because, in many cases, the compliance times are short, and we actually have to start to prepare now for rules before the ink is dried.”While tech companies say they agree that their industry needs new regulation, they are pushing back against some specific proposals—in part because of the impact they might have. Some tech executives, such as Twitter’s Ms. McSweeney, say they worry requirements in proposed online-content rules could encourage companies to remove content they merely disagree with, chilling free speech.Google’s Mr. Walker says he is concerned that the definition of an online marketplace in one bill could force the company to notify websites each time their ranking changed in the search engine, a virtually impossible task.Google offices in New York. The company is reworking how it handles user and partner information internally, an executive says. What’s the effect? For their part, advocates for more regulation worry that the big tech companies could emerge unscathed from the newest wave of regulation. Gabriel Weinberg, founder and chief executive of DuckDuckGo, maker of a privacy-centric search engine, says that three EU antitrust decisions against Google, and more than $9 billion in fines, have done little to pare the search leader’s market position. I’m pretty hopeful it will,” Mr. Weinberg says. “But it looks like the devil’s in the details of actually moving the market.”Frances Haugen, Facebook whistleblower, at a House hearing in Washington in December.Policy makers say they are confident they can make it work. That negative trend accelerated in the first trading week of the new year. The tech-heavy Nasdaq started 2022 with a 5% dive, and many Wall Street favorites fell even harder.

These declines were sparked by worries about stretched valuations, slowing growth, and a financial drag from rising interest rates. But there are some companies that are much better positioned to navigate these challenges than others. With that in mind, let's look at why you might want to consider adding Netflix and Garmin to your watch list for 2022.

1. Netflix doesn't need to borrow

Netflix stock is down over 10% in the last three months while the broader market has gained 6%. The streaming video giant is well below the all-time highs it set of nearly $700 per share back in late November.

Investors shouldn't ignore that price cut.

Yes, Netflix is on track to addfewer subscribersthis fiscal year compared to booming results in 2020. But management is still projecting over 8 million additions in the fourth quarter thanks to a flood of exclusive TV and film releases. Executives back in October described the schedule as "our strongest Q4 content offering yet," packed with new movies likeDon't Look Upand returning franchises likeThe WitcherandCobra Kai.

While a surprisingly strong finish to fiscal 2021 might quickly energize Netflix stock, bigger-picture trends are even brighter. The company is enjoying soaring profitability, with operating margin headed toward 25% of sales. And its positive cash flow position insulates it from any sharp rise in interest rates. Netflix's next earnings report is set for Jan. 20, and these financial wins will likely be obvious in that announcement.

2. Garmin sees far ahead

Garmin will announce its fiscal Q4 results in mid-February, but investors don't have to wait until then to snap up shares of this underperforming, yet impressive, stock. The tech producer's last operating update contained all the great news that shareholders have been seeing for several years now.

Sales trends were strong across its wide portfolio that spans smartwatches, fitness trackers, and aviation and marine navigation devices. Sales are up 27% in the three months ended in late September, in fact, and earnings have jumped 25%.

Garmin likely had a good finish to its 2021 year thanks to solid demand and just modest supply chain issues. But investors have more to look forward to in the years to come. That negative trend accelerated in the first trading week of the new year. The tech-heavy Nasdaq started 2022 with a 5% dive, and many Wall Street favorites fell even harder.These declines were sparked by worries about stretched valuations, slowing growth, and a financial drag from rising interest rates. But there are some companies that are much better positioned to navigate these challenges than others. With that in mind, let's look at why you might want to consider adding Netflix and Garmin to your watch list for 2022.1. Netflix doesn't need to borrowNetflix stock is down over 10% in the last three months while the broader market has gained 6%. The streaming video giant is well below the all-time highs it set of nearly $700 per share back in late November.Investors shouldn't ignore that price cut.Yes, Netflix is on track to addfewer subscribersthis fiscal year compared to booming results in 2020. But management is still projecting over 8 million additions in the fourth quarter thanks to a flood of exclusive TV and film releases. Executives back in October described the schedule as \"our strongest Q4 content offering yet,\" packed with new movies likeDon't Look Upand returning franchises likeThe WitcherandCobra Kai.While a surprisingly strong finish to fiscal 2021 might quickly energize Netflix stock, bigger-picture trends are even brighter. The company is enjoying soaring profitability, with operating margin headed toward 25% of sales. And its positive cash flow position insulates it from any sharp rise in interest rates. Netflix's next earnings report is set for Jan. 20, and these financial wins will likely be obvious in that announcement.2. Garmin sees far aheadGarmin will announce its fiscal Q4 results in mid-February, but investors don't have to wait until then to snap up shares of this underperforming, yet impressive, stock. The tech producer's last operating update contained all the great news that shareholders have been seeing for several years now.Sales trends were strong across its wide portfolio that spans smartwatches, fitness trackers, and aviation and marine navigation devices. Sales are up 27% in the three months ended in late September, in fact, and earnings have jumped 25%.Garmin likely had a good finish to its 2021 year thanks to solid demand and just modest supply chain issues. But investors have more to look forward to in the years to come. Garmin has a chance to boost its profit margin to a market-trouncing 25% of sales with help from rising prices overall and a tilt toward premium products like aviation platforms. It's an attractive way forgrowth investorsto gain access to the wearables space, too.Despite that bright future, the tech specialist's stock has fallen in the last three months even as the wider market moved higher. Now might be the right time to capitalize on that weakness if you're happy to endure some volatility on the way toward market-beating investor returns.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":101,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
