mortgage loan offerings.</p><p>The latest increase is in line withrising interest ratesas the US Federal Reserve hikes its benchmark policy rate to deal withsurging inflation.</p><p>Singapore’s largest bank, DBS, is raising its fixed-rate housing loan interest rate to 3.5% from the earlier 2.75%.</p><p>This new rate now applies to all four of the lender’s packages with tenors of between two to five years.</p><p>Meanwhile, UOB announced that its two-year and three-year fixed-rate home loans bear interest rates of 3.75% and 3.85%, respectively.</p><p>Not to be outdone, OCBC has revised its two-year fixed rate to 3.5%, up from 2.98% just a fortnight ago.</p><p>The bank is also re-launching its one-year fixed rate package at 3.35%.</p><p>With higher rates across the board, homeowners should be prepared to fork out more in interest payments when they refinance their housing loans.</p><h2><b>Singapore retail sales</b></h2><p>Retail sales continued to rise in Singapore in August, continuing the trend seen in July.</p><p>Sales increased 13% year on year in August, slightly lower than the 13.9% year on year chalked up in the previous month.</p><p>The latest increase did fall below the 15.4% that analysts had expected.</p><p>The estimated total retail sales value for August came in at S$3.8 billion, of which online sales took up a 12.5% share.</p><p>Despite the slightly weaker numbers, August’s retail sales still represented a fifth consecutive month of double-digit year on year growth.</p><p>At the same time, elevated core inflation could dampen consumer demand in the months to come.</p><p>Along with higher interest rates, more households may tighten their belts and cut back on spending to service higher mortgage payments.</p><h2><b>SATS Ltd (SGX: S58)</b></h2><p>SATS has seen its share price lose a fifth of its value since it announced theacquisition of Worldwide Flight Servicesfor almost S$1.64 billion.</p><p>Investors were concerned that the ground handler will finance the deal with a potential rights issue to raise the required S$1.7 billion to finance the purchase.</p><p>CEO Kerry Mok has come out to assure investors that the group is looking out for their interests and that a rights issue is one of four funding sources for the mega-deal.</p><p>He also acknowledged that SATS will have to scale down the size of the rights issue as in his own words: “the market does not like rights issues”.</p><p>In its original announcement for the acquisition, SATS had presented a funding plan that will involve the issuance of 609 million new shares at S$2.79 apiece.</p><p>The rights issue price was a steep discount of 28% to the food caterer’s then-closing price of S$3.87.</p><p>Other funding sources put forward include an acquisition bridge facility of €1.2 billion (around S$1.7 billion), internal cash resources, and new strategic investors.</p><p>The group may also tap into a mixture of the four sources to come up with an optimal plan to fund the acquisition.</p><p>Mok reiterated that investors should take a medium to long-term view of this deal as it will bring about tremendous benefits to worth $17 million as of Tuesday’s close.</p><h2>Wood&#39;s Underperformance</h2><p>Ark funds have tumbled in recent months, as their technology stock holdings suffered from weak earnings. Wood has noted that she has a five-year investment horizon.</p><p>The five-year track record of Ark Innovation ETF beat that of the S&amp;P 500 until May 9. But the five-year annualized return of Ark Innovation totaled 6.39% through Sept. 13, behind the S&amp;P 500’s 11.46% return.</p><p>Ark Innovation has dropped 55% this year, and it’s down 73% from its February 2021 peak. Raging inflation and soaring interest rates helped put the kibosh on tech earnings.</p><p>Investors started moving out of the $8.3 billion Ark Innovation in August, and it had a net outflow of $154.2 million over the three months through Sept. 13, according to VettaFi, an ETF research firm.</p><p>Over the past month, however, the fund enjoyed a net inflow of $10.5 million.</p><h2>Deflation and Recession</h2><p>Meanwhile, the 8.3% surge in consumer prices reported for the 12 months through August did nothing to change Wood’s economic views. She still believes we’re suffering deflation and are in the midst of a recession.</p><p>Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has misread the environment in comparing this period to the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Wood said in a webinar. That’s when then-Fed Chairman Paul Volcker pushed interest rates way higher to quell inflation.</p><p>“Powell believes that he too is slaying the inflation dragon,” Wood said. “But we don’t believe the Fed’s task is anything like the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.”</p><p>Back then, the economy took 15 years to “work up an inflation frenzy,” she said. “This is more like a 15-month problem.”</p><p>So, “to use the same resolve this time will prove to be a mistake,” Wood said. “We think we’re already in a recession.”</p><p>She considers consumer-price gauges a lagging indicator. Gold is the best leading indicator for inflation, she said. ProShares says the following about their VIXY ETF:</p><p>Investment Objective: ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF seeks investment results, before fees and expenses, that track the performance of the S&amp;P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Index</p><p>Designed for knowledgeable investors:</p><p>Who seek to profit from increases in the expected volatility of the S&amp;P 500, as measured by the prices of VIX futures contracts.</p><p>Who seek to reduce U.S. equity portfolio risk, since changes in the VIX Short-Term Futures Index have historically been negatively correlated to S&amp;P 500 returns.</p><p>It is intended for short-term use; investors should actively manage and monitor their investments, as frequently as daily.</p><p>It does not track the performance of the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) and can be expected to perform very differently from the VIX.</p><p>We very much agree with these points.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4f450fc90be36f004ca91888b14a51cc\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"291\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>The Price History of VIXY (Michael McDonald)</p><p>This graph shows the entire price history of VIXY since inception. It started with an adjusted price of $32,000 in 2011 and it’s currently at $14.75. The red circles highlight times when sudden market declines can advance the price from 200% to 400%. Timing these moments, however, is very difficult; one loses money just waiting around.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4cc67c4ca38c54e220fcc74b78f716ed\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"430\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>VIX versus Assets in VIXY (Michael McDonald)</p><p>This chart plots the VIX against total assets in VIXY from 2011 to present. I’ve included it to show an important fact; that assets in VIXY have been rising the last two months and are near record levels. This normally indicates a growing number of bearish investors and occurs as stock prices begin a long-term price rise.</p><p>In other words, rising assets in VIXY is a positive indicator for higher stock prices. This is also confirmed by average daily buying in VIXY, which is shown in the next graph. Notice the large surges in purchases of VIXY that have historically occurred just prior to major advances in stock prices.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/653097aecff80bde34ed270c2bf0c62e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"411\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Buying Activity in VIXY and Market Lows (Michael McDonald)</p><p><b>We Still Have Extreme Levels of Bearish Sentiment</b></p><p>Well-tested metrics still show extreme levels of bearish sentiment. This is very important because, while the economic picture is always different during a decline, extremely negative sentiment is the one, common denominator at the end. Many investors don’t know this and get lost in the arguments and alarming economic picture of the moment. Because of this, we are highlighting the data and theory that supports this at the end of every article.</p><p><b>The Master Sentiment Indicator Continues to Point to Higher Stock Prices</b></p><p>We combine seven classic sentiment indicators to form one Master Sentiment Indicator. The seven indictors that make up the composite are:</p><ol><li>The CBOE equity puts and calls ratio</li><li>The CBOE total puts and calls ratio</li><li>The Commitment of Trader data on the E-mini S&amp;P Futures</li><li>The Buying Level in the SH ProShares ETF</li><li>The Exposure Level of the National Association of Active Investment Managers</li><li>The daily Hulbert Stock and Nasdaq Sentiment readings</li><li>The AAII Sentiment Survey</li></ol><p>The MSI is designed to locate major market lows. It&#39;s shown in the next two charts - one is a long-term view from 2007, the other starts in 2018 and shows more detail. The indicator is currently -4.4, which is still relatively low after a two-month rally and, in our opinion, points to higher prices.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6f9932ca78cf38cac8acafa6ed99fd90\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"382\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Long Term Master Sentiment Indicator(Michael McDonald)</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/564c047b5a64f56f8ada85d67403c751\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"376\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Shorter Term View of the MSI(Michael McDonald)</p><p><b>Forming the Master Sentiment Indicator</b></p><p>Combining multiple indicators to form one sentiment indicator is not easy. How do you combine a puts and calls ratio of 1.0 with a 40% Investor&#39;s Intelligence bearish percent? When forming a composite everything has to be mathematically consistent. We accomplished it in the following way.</p><p>We took each indicator back as far as history allowed (the smallest time period being 17 years) and determined the range of values that contained the highest 5% of its values. Then we determined the range of values that contained the next highest 5%. This procedure was continued in 5% increments down to the 5% band that contained the smallest values. This activity allowed us to put every indicator on the same 21 range scale which was labeled 10 to -10.</p><p>We then added each indicator&#39;s position number (10 to -10), which determines where it is historically, and divided the total by the number of indicators in the composite. Out came a composite number between 10 and -10 that represented the average bracket value of all the sentiment indicators.</p><p><b>The MSI Red and Green Zones</b></p><p>As you can see the MSI oscillates between 10 and -10. The large, grey area in the middle represents periods when there is no extreme opinion. The red area shows when the indicator is getting into the &#34;extremely bullish&#34; range. The lower green band shows when it&#39;s getting into the &#34;extremely bearish&#34; range. There is no sudden demarcation but graduated numbers that shows greater or lesser degrees of sentiment. The chart clearly shows how recent levels compare to readings at major lows over the last 16 years.</p><p><b>The MSI Table</b></p><p>The table shows the ranking of each of the seven components that make up the composite, as well as the composite itself.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/803fad9f81d0c516e4d8672717930dec\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"461\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>MSI and Indicator Component Table (Michael McDonald)</p><p>The first column in the table lists the 21 rankings that go from +10 to -10. This is followed by the names of the seven indicators used in the composite with an X showing the current ranking of each.</p><p>The final column displays the ranking of the MSI index, which on August 26 was -4.4.</p><p><b>Conclusion</b></p><p>We recommend investors avoid VIXY unless they have a proven track record of correctly timing market declines. But since the market only declines 33% of the time, finding the start of a sudden decline is very difficult. We also don&#39;t think this is the time to time a decline due to our belief the market is ready to begin a major advance.</p><p>However, purchasing VIXY at this time to hedge against possible catastrophic events does make sense for a small portion of one&#39;s assets. That&#39;s because the gains versus losses at moments like this are asymmetrical in favor of the downside. We&#39;re specifically thinking of possible catastrophic events coming out of Ukraine. How do you combine a puts and calls ratio of 1.0 with a 40% Investor's Intelligence bearish percent? When forming a composite everything has to be mathematically consistent. We accomplished it in the following way.We took each indicator back as far as history allowed (the smallest time period being 17 years) and determined the range of values that contained the highest 5% of its values. Then we determined the range of values that contained the next highest 5%. This procedure was continued in 5% increments down to the 5% band that contained the smallest values. This activity allowed us to put every indicator on the same 21 range scale which was labeled 10 to -10.We then added each indicator's position number (10 to -10), which determines where it is historically, and divided the total by the number of indicators in the composite. Out came a composite number between 10 and -10 that represented the average bracket value of all the sentiment indicators.The MSI Red and Green ZonesAs you can see the MSI oscillates between 10 and -10. The large, grey area in the middle represents periods when there is no extreme opinion. The red area shows when the indicator is getting into the \"extremely bullish\" range. But since the market only declines 33% of the time, finding the start of a sudden decline is very difficult. We also don't think this is the time to time a decline due to our belief the market is ready to begin a major advance.However, purchasing VIXY at this time to hedge against possible catastrophic events does make sense for a small portion of one's assets. While global investors offload stocks and bonds, ETF customers have been buyers,” she noted. “ETF inflows have likely come from long-term investors, also known as the buy-and-hold crowd. Tactical investors have shifted their attention to bond ETFs. continuing the trend seen in July.</p><p>Sales increased 13% year on year in August, slightly lower than the 13.9% year on year chalked up in the previous month.</p><p>The latest increase did fall below the 15.4% that analysts had expected.</p><p>The estimated total retail sales value for August came in at S$3.8 billion, of which online sales took up a 12.5% share.</p><p>Despite the slightly weaker numbers, August’s retail sales still represented a fifth consecutive month of double-digit year on year growth.</p><p>At the same time, elevated core inflation could dampen consumer demand in the months to come.</p><p>Along with higher interest rates, more households may tighten their belts and cut back on spending to service higher mortgage payments.</p><h2><b>SATS Ltd (SGX: S58)</b></h2><p>SATS has seen its share price lose a fifth of its value since it announced theacquisition of Worldwide Flight Servicesfor almost S$1.64 billion.</p><p>Investors were concerned that the ground handler will finance the deal with a potential rights issue to raise the required S$1.7 billion to finance the purchase.</p><p>CEO Kerry Mok has come out to assure investors that the group is looking out for their interests and that a rights issue is one of four funding sources for the mega-deal.</p><p>He also acknowledged that SATS will have to scale down the size of the rights issue as in his own words: “the market does not like rights issues”.</p><p>In its original announcement for the acquisition, SATS had presented a funding plan that will involve the issuance of 609 million new shares at S$2.79 apiece.</p><p>The rights issue price was a steep discount of 28% to the food caterer’s then-closing price of S$3.87.</p><p>Other funding sources put forward include an acquisition bridge facility of €1.2 billion (around S$1.7 billion), internal cash resources, and new strategic investors.</p><p>The group may also tap into a mixture of the four sources to come up with an optimal the 10-year Treasury note rose again sharply as traders reassessed their positions based on how aggressively they expect the Federal Reserve will raise rates.</p><p>Adding to the boost, ADP data its rate hike stance.</p><p>&#34;It&#39;s a little bit more jobs being created or opened than the market was expecting and that leads to the belief that the Fed is not going to be pivoting in With interest rate hikes set to continue and the economy seemingly on edge that would seem to imply Tesla share prices ought to fall further, right? I’m not so sure because I see multiple signs that indicate reason for optimism.</p><p><b>Entering Part 3</b></p><p>CEO Elon Musk is a bold, ambitious entrepreneur with grand plans. Those plans include running multiple businesses at once and plans for each of those businesses individually. In the case of Tesla, that means enacting Part 3 of his master plan for the EV company.</p><p>That means greater scale and increased production. When we say greater scale, we mean scaling up to a degree such that the energy infrastructure of the earth favors EVs, and thus Tesla.</p><p>Musk puts an actual number on that scale: 300 terawatt-hours of installed capacity as measured by vehicles and battery packs. In order to achieve that Tesla has been increasing its partnership activity with mining companies. So, one part of Part 3 of the master plan is simply scaling up.</p><p>Another important factor for the company is increasing the volume of production of its vehicles.</p><p>Investors want Tesla to produce more of its vehicles. The more it produces, the more it can deliver. The more it can deliver, the higher its stock should go.</p><p>That may seem at odds with recent comments Musk made about headcount, though.</p><p><b>Headcount Meets Ambition</b></p><p>Tesla sales increased 85% in 2021. That increase in sales was made possible by a 40% increase in headcount at the company. All other factors remaining unchanged, that means Tesla increased its efficiency during 2021.</p><p>That’s a big plus for TSLA stock. There’s reason to believe that increased efficiency could get even better in 2022. After waffling about potentially cutting headcount by 10% this year Musk changed course, stating that total headcount will increase, but salaried headcount should remain fairly flat.</p><p>Reading between the lines, that means Tesla should be relying heavily on temporary employees to achieve its goal to increase sales 50% in 2022. In other words, Tesla should be hiring lots of non-salaried employees to reach that goal. For investors that means Tesla is planning to keep salary expenses flat and hire cheaper labor to reach that goal of a 50% sales increase. In other words, a lot more revenue without the added expense of more expensive salaried employees.</p><p><b>Other Positive News for TSLA Stock</b></p><p>The other positive news to report related to Tesla is that Chinese EV demand is roaring back following lockdowns.  Officials from the Chinese Passenger Car Association expect June EV volume to be 50% greater than that in May.</p><p>They also expect quarter-over-quarter growth to reach 20%. With interest rate hikes set to continue and the economy seemingly on edge that would seem to imply Tesla share prices ought to fall further, right? I’m not so sure because I see multiple signs that indicate reason for optimism.Entering Part 3CEO Elon Musk is a bold, ambitious entrepreneur with grand plans. Those plans include running multiple businesses at once and plans for each of those businesses individually. In the case of Tesla, that means enacting Part 3 of his master plan for the EV company.That means greater scale and increased production. When we say greater scale, we mean scaling up to a degree such that the energy infrastructure of the earth favors EVs, and thus Tesla.Musk puts an actual number on that scale: 300 terawatt-hours of installed capacity as measured by vehicles and battery packs. In order to achieve that Tesla has been increasing its partnership activity with mining companies. So, one part of Part 3 of the master plan is simply scaling up.Another important factor for the company is increasing the volume of production of its vehicles.Investors want Tesla to produce more of its vehicles. The more it produces, the more it can deliver. The more it can deliver, the higher its stock should go.That may seem at odds with recent comments Musk made about headcount, though.Headcount Meets AmbitionTesla sales increased 85% in 2021. That increase in sales was made possible by a 40% increase in headcount at the company. All other factors remaining unchanged, that means Tesla increased its efficiency during 2021.That’s a big plus for TSLA stock. There’s reason to believe that increased efficiency could get even better in 2022. After waffling about potentially cutting headcount by 10% this year Musk changed course, stating that total headcount will increase, but salaried headcount should remain fairly flat.Reading between the lines, that means Tesla should be relying heavily on temporary employees to achieve its goal to increase sales 50% in 2022. In other words, Tesla should be hiring lots of non-salaried employees to reach that goal. For investors that means Tesla is planning to keep salary expenses flat and hire cheaper labor to reach that goal of a 50% sales increase. In other words, a lot more revenue without the added expense of more expensive salaried employees.Other Positive News for TSLA StockThe other positive news to report related to Tesla is that Chinese EV demand is roaring back following lockdowns.  Officials from the Chinese Passenger Car Association expect June EV volume to be 50% greater than that in May.They also expect quarter-over-quarter growth to reach 20%.
