Vance Addresses Iran's Snub of Photo Op, Urges Caution on Social Media Claims

Deep News06-23

US Vice President Vance stated on the 22nd that, while Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi appeared to avoid a photo opportunity with him during talks in Switzerland on the 21st, he did not feel snubbed.

Vance told reporters, "Believe me, I've spent a lot of time with the Iranians over the past few months. Sometimes I find them as negotiators to be very inscrutable."

Vance noted that at the time, "a storm erupted on social media," suggesting Iran was about to withdraw from the negotiations.

"Then we went on to talk with them for about another nine hours. So I want to remind the media to maintain a degree of skepticism towards information on Iranian social media. The Iranian negotiators' way of operating is inscrutable, but we feel we are making progress," Vance said.

Previously, a source close to the negotiating team indicated that the US side and the meeting organizers had originally planned for the Iranian and American delegations to shake hands and take a group photo before the start of quadrilateral talks, but the Iranian delegation refused this arrangement.
