Skilled workers from advanced manufacturing hubs including Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai gathered in Foshan on October 25 to compete and showcase their talents at the 2026 Guangdong Provincial Vocational Skills Competition for Smart Robotics and Digital Manufacturing Applied Technology, painting scenes of human-machine collaboration in intelligent manufacturing.

The competition, held at the event site with images provided by the organizers, closely aligns with the direction of developing new quality productive forces and attracted more than 100 contestants. As a two-person team event, it combines theoretical knowledge assessment with practical skills evaluation. The hands-on segment relies on an integrated smart robotics system platform, focusing on four key capabilities: data collection and processing, human-machine interaction, intelligent equipment assembly and commissioning, and basic PLC applications. It comprehensively covers core processes including fixture assembly and adjustment, electrical and pneumatic connections, vision debugging, large model voice interaction debugging, and PLC programming and debugging, truly realizing the concept of "the competition floor as the production line, the exam question as the work order."

After intense competition, one first prize, three second prizes and five third prizes were awarded. Among them, contestants Zhang Shuishan and Zhang Yunsong from Nanhai, Foshan, won the first prize.

"During the competition, we encountered things we had never dealt with before. It was a rare opportunity that helped us grow a great deal," said Zhang Shuishan. He noted that the competition events are closely tied to actual production. Going forward, he will bring the valuable experience gained on the competition floor back to his post, which will help design better and more technical solutions.

The ultimate goal of skills competitions is to drive skills training and industrial upgrading in tandem, and to create resonance between talent development and regional growth. In recent years, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has adhered to a manufacturing-first strategy, treating smart robotics as one of its key emerging industries. Currently, Nanhai in Foshan alone has gathered more than 100 enterprises in the robotics sector and is rapidly becoming an "industrial testing ground" for robotics technology validation and innovation iteration.
