Amazon is set to open its largest retail store ever, planning a new massive physical location in a Chicago suburb with a footprint large enough to surpass a typical Walmart store. The company stated that approximately half of the planned large-format store in Orland Park, Illinois, will be dedicated to selling groceries, diapers, paper towels, and other daily necessities, along with freshly prepared meals. The other half will be utilized for fulfilling both online and in-store orders.
This e-commerce giant has spent years attempting to extend its online dominance into the physical retail space but has yet to find a consistently successful formula. Amazon has shuttered dozens of its own branded stores and more than half of its Amazon Go cashier-less convenience stores. Now, Amazon is setting its sights even higher, planning to create a massive store spanning approximately 230,000 square feet—a size substantial enough to accommodate nearly two average-sized Target stores. Amazon is already the largest online retailer in the United States. However, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, even after two decades of rapid online shopping growth, in-store purchases still account for over 80% of total retail sales. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that, in addition to this Illinois location, Amazon also plans to open other large-format stores across the United States.
