The head of applications at OpenAI, Fidji Simo, announced on Thursday that she will be stepping down from her full-time position following an extended medical leave, transitioning instead to a part-time advisory role with the ChatGPT developer.
In a post on the social media platform X, Simo wrote, "Three months ago, I had to take medical leave due to a severe worsening of a chronic condition I have been living with for seven years. During this time, I have come to realize that my path to recovery will be much longer and more complex than I had anticipated—and it will require my full focus."
Simo was one of three directors appointed to the OpenAI board in March 2024, following the return of Sam Altman to the role of CEO.
"I'm very sad about this, and incredibly grateful for everything Fidji has done for OpenAI, and even for her friendship and the quality of her as a person," Altman stated in a separate post on X.
