New Zealand Foreign Minister Criticizes Central Bank Governor's Involvement in Powell Support Statement

Deep News01-14

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters has criticized the country's new central bank governor, Anna Breaman, for becoming involved in U.S. domestic politics. This comes after Breaman joined other global central bank governors in signing a statement expressing support for U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

Peters wrote on the social media platform X: "The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has no role in U.S. domestic politics and should not be involved. We remind the Governor to stay in her New Zealand lane and focus on domestic monetary policy." He further added that if the Governor had sought advice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade would have offered the same counsel, but she did not do so.
