On August 3, the eighth unit of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, invested and controlled by CNNC's subsidiary China National Nuclear Power, successfully completed the cold functional test (cold test). This milestone marks the unit's transition from the installation phase to the commissioning phase, laying a solid foundation for subsequent hot functional tests and fuel loading.
The cold test is a major comprehensive commissioning test for nuclear power plants. Its primary purpose is to verify the performance of the primary circuit system, equipment, and auxiliary pipelines under high pressure, and to conduct related tests on the main and auxiliary systems at various pressure levels. It serves as the first comprehensive "health check" of the entire reactor's performance.
The Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant's seventh and eighth units represent the largest strategic cooperation project between China and Russia in the nuclear energy sector to date. The eighth unit has already completed key milestones, including dome lifting, main pipeline welding, and the cold functional test. Subsequent work will include the containment building pressure test, hot functional test, fuel loading, criticality test, turbine startup and grid connection, as well as various power platform tests after grid connection.
Once fully operational, the seventh and eighth units of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant will generate approximately 18.8 billion kilowatt-hours annually. This will significantly drive deep decarbonization in Jiangsu Province's high-energy-consumption industries and support the stability and energy supply security of the East China Power Grid and the regional energy market.
