OpenAI is launching an early version of an artificial intelligence (AI) model designed to accelerate drug discovery, joining the race among technology companies to demonstrate AI's potential in driving further scientific breakthroughs.
The developer of ChatGPT announced on Thursday that the model, named GPT-Rosalind, is targeted at life sciences research. It can assist in extracting insights from vast datasets and translating scientific research into patient-facing medical applications. OpenAI stated that the model will initially be available as a research preview to select enterprise clients. Early users include pharmaceutical company Amgen, vaccine manufacturer Moderna, and the nonprofit Allen Institute for bioscience research.
OpenAI, Anthropic, and Alphabet's Google are increasingly focusing on AI applications in science and healthcare, including aiding new drug development and analyzing personal medical data.
Following the announcement, shares of companies involved in drug discovery experienced significant declines. IQVIA Holdings dropped as much as 3.2%, Charles River Laboratories International Inc. fell 2.6%, while Recursion Pharmaceuticals and Schrodinger both saw declines exceeding 5%.
