[Click to register] On October 16, the main venue launch ceremony for Lanzhou City's 2026 World Food Day and National Food Security Awareness Week was held at the square outside Jincheng Park in Xigu District. The event was jointly hosted by the Lanzhou Municipal Bureau of Food and Strategic Reserves, the Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Municipal Education Bureau, the Municipal Government Offices Administration, the Communist Youth League Lanzhou Municipal Committee, and the Municipal Women's Federation, with the Xigu District People's Government as co-organizer. It adopted a format of government leadership, expert science popularization, enterprise participation, public experience, and media coordination to create an immersive, interactive, and widely participatory food security themed awareness campaign.
The launch ceremony opened with a public performance. A themed promotional video was shown on the large screen at the venue, displaying whole grain scenes from field to table and data on food saving and loss reduction, visually presenting the entire food production chain. Experts from the College of Agronomy at Gansu Agricultural University gave presentations on whole grain nutrition and knowledge about saving food and reducing losses. Combining Lanzhou's dietary characteristics, they answered questions such as what whole grains are, why people should eat whole grains, and how to scientifically consume grains, guiding residents to establish a scientific dietary concept of eating coarse grains, whole grains, healthy foods, and cherishing food.
The organizers awarded honor flags as "Lanzhou City 2026 World Food Day and National Food Security Awareness Week Volunteer Promotional Enterprises" to 18 grain and oil processing, grain reserve, and whole grain production enterprises across the city. A representative of Heheng Agriculture stated that since its establishment in 2003, the company has focused on the breeding, testing, and promotion of new corn varieties. The first barrier to food security lies in seeds, and source enterprises must firmly hold seed resources in their own hands. A representative of Xigu Grain and Oil Purchase and Sales Company introduced that the company was established in 1992 and undertakes grain and oil purchase and sales as well as supply and market stabilization tasks for Xigu District and even Lanzhou City. It will earnestly shoulder its responsibilities and do a good job in supplying assured grain and oil and promoting whole grains.
After the ceremony, the venue transitioned into public welfare sales, science consultation, and interactive experience activities. Coarse grain noodles, oats, buckwheat, millet, highland barley, and whole grain foods were showcased together. Residents read science exhibition boards and consulted about whole grain cultivation, purchasing, storage, and cooking techniques. Many residents said that Lanzhou table favorites such as hemp pea gray beans, naked oat sweet fermented grain, buckwheat jelly, stirred paste, buckwheat noodles, and coarse grain noodle slices are whole grains right around them. Xigu Grain and Oil Purchase and Sales Company brought rice, flour, edible oil, and coarse grains to the site, introduced whole grain products commonly sold in its stores, and guided residents to "buy small amounts frequently and eat new while storing old," making the best use of every grain.
It is reported that the theme of 2026 World Food Day is "Innovate Now, Secure Food for the Future," and the theme of the National Food Security Awareness Week is "Implement the Whole Grain Action Plan, Promote Food Saving and Loss Reduction and Nutrition and Health," highlighting "whole grains, good nutrition, better health." In December 2024, seven departments including the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration jointly issued the National Whole Grain Action Plan (2024-2035), proposing to continuously increase whole grain supply and consumption, help save food and reduce losses, promote balanced nutrition, and enhance food security and public health. It clearly stated that by 2035, public awareness of whole grains will be significantly improved, the proportion of whole grains in residents' dietary consumption will steadily increase, the supply of high-quality whole grain products will be more abundant, and a whole grain industry development pattern with a complete chain, reasonable structure, matched supply and demand, and continuous upgrading will be built.
A representative of Heheng Agriculture stated that the company will adjust breeding targets, improve nutritional indicators such as grain protein and dietary fiber, enhance disease resistance, lodging resistance, and drought tolerance, and improve processing adaptability, providing "seed strength" for the whole grain action. During the awareness week, the co-hosting units carried out distinctive activities based on their functions: the Municipal Education Bureau launched the "Beautiful Food Moments - You Clear Your Plate, I Give a Gift" campus series; the Municipal Government Offices Administration organized municipal departments' canteens to carry out "strict economy, oppose waste" publicity; the Communist Youth League Lanzhou Municipal Committee carried out the "Youth Guards China's Grain" themed practice; the Municipal Women's Federation promoted the "Women Revitalize Grain and Save Grain" activity; and Xigu District simultaneously carried out supporting publicity to promote the concepts of cherishing grain, saving grain, and healthy diets into schools, government offices, communities, and families.
The organizers also built an all-media publicity matrix, organizing media reporters to go to the front lines and carry out a series of interviews such as assured grain purchases in supermarkets, food saving and loss reduction in markets, agricultural science experts in fields, assured grain and oil in communities, opposing waste in canteens, and the virtue of cherishing grain in schools, telling Lanzhou's food security story well. The hosting units stated that they will promote the implementation of the National Whole Grain Action Plan (2024-2035) in Lanzhou, carry out normalized food security publicity and education, deeply implement the whole grain promotion action, strengthen saving and loss reduction governance across the entire chain of grain production, purchase, storage, processing, and sales, guide the public to establish a sense of diligence and thrift and develop scientific dietary habits, continuously consolidate the public foundation for food security, and build a solid regional food security barrier.
