AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. announced its second-quarter results on Monday, revealing record-high revenue and core profit in the company's 106-year history. This positive news drove AMC Entertainment shares to surge 26.8% on the day, closing at $2.46, with trading volume skyrocketing to more than four times the three-month average.
The financial report indicates that AMC's second-quarter revenue grew by 14.2% year-over-year to approximately $1.6 billion, while its adjusted EBITDA surged 70% to $321.4 million, surpassing the $300 million mark for the first time. The company achieved free cash flow of $190.1 million and held approximately $778 million in cash, excluding restricted funds, at the end of the quarter.
This performance growth was fueled by a wave of moviegoers drawn by a strong summer blockbuster lineup. Global attendance in the second quarter exceeded 71 million, a 13.5% increase from the prior year. North American box office revenue grew by 11.4%, outpacing the industry's overall growth of 10.7%. The European market performed particularly well, with attendance up 18% and adjusted EBITDA soaring 337% year-over-year. The premiumization strategy proved effective, with food, beverage, and merchandise sales growing 15.3%, and premium large-format screens contributing over half of the opening weekend box office for the film "Odyssey".
AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron stated on the earnings call, "In AMC's 106-year history, there has never been a quarter like this one." He also countered long-term pessimists in the cinema industry, whom he referred to as "doomsayers," stating they have consistently "grossly underestimated the will and the ability of AMC."
Financially, the company continues to improve its balance sheet. Since the end of 2020, it has reduced its debt by approximately $1.7 billion. Through refinancing and equity issuance measures, it has pushed the next significant debt maturity date beyond 2029. This improvement in leverage is expected to save about $51 million in annual interest expenses.
Aron expressed an optimistic outlook for the full year, noting that 2026 is shaping up to be the strongest post-pandemic year for box office performance. Upcoming blockbusters such as "Spider-Man: Fresh Start," "Dune: Part Three," and "Avengers: Doomsday" are expected to support continued growth.
