Referred to as the “news media bargaining code,” it would require digital platforms to pay local media outlets and publishers to link their content in news feeds or search results. If both sides are unable to reach a commercial deal, government-appointed arbitrators can decide on the price.\nBoth Google and Facebook have threatened to limit their services in Australia if the law is passed.\nGoogle said it could pull its search engine from the country, where it holds a staggering 94.5% market share. For its part, Facebook has threatened to stop allowing Australians to share local and international news on the social network and on Instagram if the law is passed.\nAustralia doesn’t want to see Google leave\nFletcher was part of an Australian delegation that held a conversation with Google CEO Sundar Pichaito discuss the contentious bill and its implications. That’s the argument from both the government andthe competition watch dog.\n“We’d expect that the market would respond and other providers of search services would come into the market, and of course,
