Brain-Computer Interface Stocks Surge as Key Breakthroughs Emerge; Nanjing Panda Gains Over 9%, BrainAurora-B Rises Nearly 8%

Several brain-computer interface (BCI) concept stocks are climbing higher in Hong Kong trading. NANJING PANDA (00553) is up 9.26% to HK$3.54, while BRAINAURORA-B (06681) has risen 7.88% to HK$1.78. MICROPORT NEURO (02172) is also trading 3.67% higher at HK$9.05.

The rally follows a significant development from US startup Science Corp., which has received regulatory approval to sell a retinal chip in the European Union. This device is designed to help patients with geographic atrophy (GA) regain partial vision. This marks the first instance of a US BCI company bringing such a device to a broad patient market, representing a major milestone toward commercializing brain implants. The company's long-term goal is to bring brain-implanted devices to market.

On the domestic front, a Chinese research team unveiled a new type of EEG signal acquisition device on July 22. This device achieved, for the first time globally, the simultaneous collection of EEG signals from over a thousand participants across different regions. This breakthrough is a critical step forward in training neural models and developing general-purpose BCI technology.

Since the beginning of this year, China has introduced a series of supportive policies for the BCI sector. The State Council's "National Health 15th Five-Year Plan" emphasizes strengthening scientific and technological breakthroughs in areas like brain-computer interfaces. Additionally, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and 13 other departments issued a three-year plan for rehabilitation aids, which highlights the need to strengthen and expand key industries, including BCI. According to Everbright Securities, with the acceleration of industry policies and technological iterations, this year could be a pivotal year for BCI to move from technical verification to commercialization and delivery.
