Guangxi authorities convened a press conference on the 10th to announce that, in order to facilitate the transition of outstanding competition achievements from the arena to the marketplace and to accelerate the formation of viable, convertible, and effective industrial pathways, the region has formally issued the "Action Plan for Promoting the Transformation and Application of Achievements from the National Medical Insurance Imaging AI Image Recognition Competition (2026-2028)". This initiative aims to deepen medical cooperation with ASEAN and extend the benefits of high-quality AI medical technology to ASEAN countries.
The National Medical Insurance Imaging AI Image Recognition Competition is a national-level professional event jointly organized by China's National Healthcare Security Administration and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Its purpose is to advance the establishment of standards for medical insurance imaging AI technology, foster industrial cluster development, and empower grassroots healthcare services.
According to the action plan, Guangxi will adhere to the principles of promoting innovation, application, and production through competition. This will be achieved by implementing several key actions: cultivating a medical imaging data ecosystem; validating and transforming medical imaging AI products; incubating industrial clusters for "AI + medical imaging"; opening up and nurturing application scenarios; and empowering applications targeted at ASEAN. These measures are designed to propel top competition results from the contest stage into the commercial market.
A focal point will be constructing standardized imaging datasets for prevalent diseases such as lung cancer, thyroid cancer, and breast cancer. These datasets will provide foundational support for the research and development, testing, and validation of AI products.
As a frontier for China's opening-up and cooperation with ASEAN, Guangxi has in recent years established substantive medical cooperation relationships with multiple ASEAN nations including Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Moving forward, premium AI medical technology is set to become a key emphasis in Guangxi's efforts to deepen medical collaboration with ASEAN.
Song Jianyuan, Vice Director of the Guangxi Department of Science and Technology, elaborated at the conference that Guangxi will establish a special cross-border joint application research program. This program will concentrate on the imaging diagnostic needs of ASEAN countries in areas like cardiovascular diseases and oncology, conducting joint adaptive technology research with ASEAN medical institutions.
Leveraging the Fangchenggang International Medical Open Pilot Zone, Guangxi will explore the establishment of regularized mechanisms for imaging consultation and case studies with ASEAN hospitals. It will promote the pilot application of AI-assisted diagnostic models and coordinate science and technology plans to support breakthroughs in key technologies and products.
Furthermore, by building on the data field international cooperation pilot in Nanning City, Guangxi will methodically advance the secure cross-border flow of medical imaging data between China and ASEAN nations. This effort aims to facilitate the deployment of high-quality large medical models in Guangxi, enabling the provision of cross-border remote diagnostic services to ASEAN.
