Samsung Group Invests $1 Billion in KKR-Backed Helix Digital Infrastructure to Expand AI Infrastructure Presence

Stock News09:18

Samsung Group companies, including Samsung Electronics, have agreed to invest a combined $1 billion in U.S. company Helix Digital Infrastructure, which is backed by private equity giant KKR & Co. Inc. (NYSE: KKR), further expanding the South Korean conglomerate's footprint in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence infrastructure market.

According to a statement released by Samsung on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Samsung C&T Corp., Samsung SDS Co. Ltd., Samsung SDI Co. Ltd., Samsung Life Insurance Co. Ltd., and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co. Ltd. will all participate in this investment. The investment will give South Korea's largest industrial group a stake in a company whose operations span multiple sectors where Samsung already maintains significant business presence, including semiconductors, construction, data centers, cloud computing, and finance.

Helix was jointly established in June by KKR & Co. Inc. (NYSE: KKR), the Kuwait Investment Authority, NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA), and U.S. power producer Vistra Corp. (NYSE: VST), and has already secured more than $10 billion in long-term capital commitments. The company is led by Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services. NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) serves as its strategic partner, while Vistra Corp. (NYSE: VST) is Helix's preferred power partner.

Rather than being content with operating as just another data center developer, Helix aims to integrate all the infrastructure needed to bring large-scale computing facilities into operation quickly. Helix stated that its business focus is on investing in, delivering, and managing infrastructure that supports artificial intelligence (AI), covering hyperscale data centers, power generation and transmission facilities, as well as fiber optic and connectivity assets.

Helix plans to leverage NVIDIA Corp.'s (NASDAQ: NVDA) full-stack technology, combined with Samsung's technology and energy storage capabilities, to accelerate the development and delivery of AI infrastructure.
