Shanghai and Xinjiang have long been key tourist destinations and source markets for each other. Shanghai International Airport Co.,Ltd. has teamed up with Xinjiang Airport Group, along with carriers including China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, and Spring Airlines, to launch the "Shanghai-Urumqi Air Shuttle". Starting today, passengers flying this route between the two cities will enjoy a smoother, faster experience from check-in, security screening, and boarding at departure, all the way through to baggage claim upon arrival.
The new shuttle service comes as Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao airports now connect to 14 destinations within Xinjiang, including Urumqi, Kashgar, Altay, Yining, Korla, Aksu, and Turpan, covering many of the region's most popular tourist spots. From January to July, passenger traffic between Shanghai and Xinjiang reached 1.388 million, with over 40 daily round-trip flights during the peak summer travel season.
Airport shuttles are high-frequency routes that operate like "airborne public transit", designed for travelers who expect to "show up and go". To meet this demand, airports and airlines provide dedicated perks. The newly introduced "Shanghai-Urumqi Air Shuttle" focuses on efficient travel, offering a "2+2+2" service package: two exclusive benefits—dedicated check-in counters and security lanes; two priority services—priority boarding and priority gate assignment; and two upgrades—a fixed baggage carousel and faster delivery of the last piece of luggage.
In recent years, Shanghai International Airport Co.,Ltd. has consistently expanded its domestic shuttle network, which now totals 25 routes. Hongqiao Airport operates 15 of these, with the heaviest capacity on routes to Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, where flights run roughly every 30 minutes during peak periods. Other covered routes include Xiamen, Qingdao, Kunming, Chongqing, and Wuhan. Pudong Airport adds 10 more shuttle routes, spanning northeast, south, southwest, and northwest directions, including services to Harbin, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Xi'an.
