From September 17 to 20, a series of cultural exchange events titled "Harmonious Opera, United Beijing-Macau" took place in Macau, supported by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission's Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau University Exchange Program. The initiative was jointly organized by the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, City University of Macau, and the Macau Cultural and Creative Industries Promotion Association, with the goal of fostering deeper connections between young people from mainland China and Macau in the fields of opera arts, cultural creativity, and heritage preservation.
During the events, a delegation of teachers and students from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts visited City University of Macau to conduct opera workshops and academic salons. Faculty members offered detailed explanations of the defining characteristics of Chinese opera, while live demonstrations of stage movements and techniques gave Macau youth a direct encounter with the aesthetic elegance of this traditional Eastern art form. Discussions between Beijing and Macau participants centered on integrating traditional arts with contemporary design, exploring perspectives such as creative product development, digital media, and youth-focused communication to chart pathways for innovation that stays true to opera's roots.
A themed concert titled "Zheng Opera Macau: Dialogue Between Opera and Chinese Music" was held concurrently at the Newman Cardinal Art Gallery in Macau. Young artists from both cities performed classic selections from Kunqu and Peking opera, including "The Peony Pavilion" and "Battle at Jinshan," as well as several Cantonese music masterpieces such as "Thunder in a Dry Season" and "Interlocking Rings." Huang Yiwen, the event's chief planner, noted that "Zheng Opera Macau" is built on the principles of "revitalizing classics, promoting aesthetic education, and providing a stage," aiming to break down the conventional boundaries of traditional arts so that more residents, especially younger audiences, can appreciate their enduring appeal.
