Shares of video conferencing company Zoom (ZM.US) surged more than 11% on Monday. This followed a report from investment firm Baird, which highlighted Zoom's investment in the generative artificial intelligence (AI) newcomer Anthropic.
Baird analyst William Power stated in a research note to clients, "While our and the market's focus has primarily been on Zoom's ability to gradually regain revenue growth momentum and capitalize on AI opportunities, the company's $51 million investment in Anthropic may be an underappreciated 'hidden gem'."
Power also reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating on Zoom and maintained a $95 price target. It is understood that Zoom's venture capital arm completed the investment in Anthropic in 2023; Anthropic is the developer of the popular Claude series of large AI models.
Earlier this month, reports indicated that Anthropic is in talks to secure $10 billion in funding at a valuation of $350 billion. Baird stated that, based on this valuation, Zoom's stake would be worth between $2 billion and $4 billion.
The latest data shows that Anthropic's recent annualized revenue has surpassed $9 billion.
