Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ryosei Akazawa, announced on Friday that the Japanese government will provide Sony with a subsidy of up to 60 billion yen (approximately $380 million USD) for the construction of an image sensor factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, located in western Japan.
At a press conference, Minister Akazawa stated that image sensors are "essential for autonomous driving and physical artificial intelligence," adding, "We hope to ensure a stable supply of image sensors."
Sony is a leading manufacturer of image sensors for smartphones and also holds a strong position in the entertainment sector, including gaming, film, music, and anime.
