Sony Secures 60 Billion Yen Government Subsidy for Image Sensor Plant

Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ryosei Akazawa, announced on Friday that the Japanese government will provide Sony with a subsidy of up to 60 billion yen (approximately $380 million USD) for the construction of an image sensor factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, located in western Japan.

At a press conference, Minister Akazawa stated that image sensors are "essential for autonomous driving and physical artificial intelligence," adding, "We hope to ensure a stable supply of image sensors."

Sony is a leading manufacturer of image sensors for smartphones and also holds a strong position in the entertainment sector, including gaming, film, music, and anime.
