Deep News03-28 22:20

Gold and silver prices surged sharply during late trading hours on March 27, Eastern Time, with spot gold breaking above $4,555 per ounce. On March 28, the price of gold jewelry from several domestic brands approached 1,400 yuan per gram. Gold has now become a popular DIY craft, with many young people choosing to create gold items at home. Experts warn that aside from safety risks, financial loss is the most common pitfall for at-home gold crafters, as operational errors often lead to significantly higher gold wastage than anticipated.

Domestic gold jewelry prices from several brands are nearing 1,400 yuan per gram. A comparison of domestic gold jewelry prices on March 28 showed that many gold and jewelry brands had raised their prices for pure gold jewelry compared to the previous day.

Lao Feng Xiang quoted 1,396 yuan per gram, up 28 yuan from the previous day's 1,368 yuan; Lao Miao Gold quoted 1,397 yuan per gram, an increase of 32 yuan from 1,365 yuan; and Chow Sang Sang quoted 1,391 yuan per gram, rising 27 yuan from 1,364 yuan.

Young people are increasingly drawn to gold crafting. Gold crafting involves processes such as melting, molding, shaping, and polishing to transform gold into items like rings, bracelets, and necklaces. Recently, this ancient craft has regained popularity, with topics related to gold crafting garnering over 1.3 billion views on social media platforms.

Gold crafters note that creating a piece of gold jewelry typically takes between one to three hours, including steps like melting, molding, shaping, grinding, and polishing. The labor cost for basic gold jewelry ranges from 10 to 40 yuan per gram, while more intricate designs, such as非遗花丝 (filigree) or hand-chasing, can cost anywhere from several dozen to over a hundred yuan per gram. Compared to the high brand premiums and craftsmanship fees at jewelry stores, this more cost-effective and personalized way of consuming gold has won favor among many young consumers.

Many consumers report that refurbishing older gold jewelry not only preserves the intrinsic value and sentimental memories of the gold but also aligns with contemporary trends, making it a "new national trend" that combines aesthetics, emotion, and financial utility.

The resurgence of gold crafting has also given rise to a new generation of young gold crafters. These individuals bring fresh creativity and aesthetics to traditional craftsmanship, while also forging new career paths with their skills.

A gold crafting shop owner mentioned that after noticing the growing popularity of gold crafting three years ago, she opened her shop. She now operates two stores with 20 employees, including 10 gold crafters, most of whom are born after 2000, with the oldest being only 28 years old. In her view, the greatest strength of a young team lies in their strong innovation capabilities and ability to accurately understand customer needs.

Interviews reveal that the gold crafting industry currently imposes no significant age or educational restrictions on crafters. Whether recent graduates or professionals seeking a career change, many have opportunities to enter this field.

As gold becomes a popular hands-on activity, many young people looking to revitalize old jewelry are opting for the more affordable and highly personalized approach of "at-home gold crafting." A quick search on social platforms reveals numerous posts and video tutorials on this topic. To save on labor costs, some purchase tools like crucible tongs, torch nozzles, and molding clay to try their hand at gold crafting at home.

How exactly does at-home gold crafting work? Can it save money and yield more gold? Behind this seemingly "cost-effective and fun" trend, what safety risks should be aware?

A search on social platforms yields many video tutorials on at-home gold crafting, most of which share successful experiences, creating the misconception that the process is straightforward. However, a closer look at videos from bloggers who document the process in detail reveals that at-home gold crafting involves strict procedures.

A full set of tools for at-home gold crafting is easily available on e-commerce platforms. Searching for "gold crafting kit" brings up options ranging from just over 100 yuan to around 200 yuan. According to tutorial creators, a basic toolkit typically includes long-nose pliers, a toothbrush, a file, an agate burnisher, borax, a torch, short-nose pliers, an electronic scale, old gold material, molding clay, some plaster molds, a gas canister, and a fireproof board.

The process involves laying a fireproof board in an iron pan to prevent gold splatter and loss when pressing the molding clay; assembling the torch used for melting gold; removing the outer packaging of the mold and heating it with the torch; then pressing the molding clay vertically, steadily, and evenly, cooling it for about ten seconds before quickly transferring it into cold water.

Although some bloggers provide highly detailed video tutorials, professional gold crafters point out that even following the steps exactly can lead to failure.

Staff at an offline gold crafting shop in Beijing also noted that while more people are attempting at-home gold crafting, successful cases are few, and many end up seeking help at shops after failed attempts.

An expert from the Ningbo Product Quality Inspection Institute believes that, in theory, at-home gold crafting is not entirely unfeasible. Individuals with good manual skills can potentially complete the process if they master the correct methods. However, uncertainties during operation and the quality of the molds themselves can lead to various issues.

The expert highlighted that gold melts at over 1,000 degrees Celsius, and working with high temperatures at home inevitably carries risks. He recommended performing the work in a well-ventilated area with protective measures, such as wearing thick gloves and using long tongs to maintain distance from the heat source, to reduce risks. Those with strong manual dexterity and learning ability might succeed on their first try, but individuals with weaker skills are more likely to fail. Additionally, molds may not be perfect and could have defects that only become apparent after the piece is made.

While at-home gold crafting is somewhat feasible, the expert also pointed out specific risks. The purity of the metal used is crucial; if it contains other metals, especially volatile ones, inferior metals with lower melting points may vaporize when the gold melts. For example, if mercury is present, it can turn into vapor, posing a poisoning risk in poorly ventilated spaces.

Beyond safety hazards, financial loss is the most common issue for at-home gold crafters. Operational errors often result in gold wastage far exceeding expectations. Common mistakes include improper preparation of plaster molds leading to cast fractures, or metal melting and breaking during soldering. These errors cause gold residue or loss that is difficult to reclaim, ultimately requiring professional repair and incurring additional costs.

The expert emphasized that at-home gold crafting is not as simple as following a tutorial and advised a rational assessment of its possibilities and limitations.
