Elon Musk has lashed out at the European Union's decision to impose a €120 million fine on his social media platform X, vowing to respond to senior EU officials involved in the penalty.
"The EU not only imposed this absurd fine on X but also fined me personally—this is utterly ridiculous!" Musk wrote on X. "Therefore, we must respond not just to the EU but also to those who took such actions against me." He later posted, "The EU should be abolished."
According to local reports, the U.S. government has condemned the EU's fine on social media company X, viewing it as specifically targeting American firms. Former U.S. President Donald Trump warned that if the EU continues penalizing U.S. tech companies, the U.S. will impose tariffs on the bloc.
On the 5th, the European Commission issued a statement announcing its first "non-compliance decision" under the Digital Services Act, fining X, owned by Musk, €120 million.
This year, the EU has launched a series of enforcement actions against U.S. tech companies under the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act. The U.S. has accused the EU of unfair regulations targeting American firms and has used steel and aluminum tariffs as leverage to pressure the EU for concessions. The EU, in turn, has criticized the U.S. move as "blackmail," insisting that its digital regulations are a matter of sovereignty and non-negotiable.
