At Least Six Prosecutors Resign from Minnesota U.S. Attorney's Office Amid ICE Shooting Investigation

Deep News01-14

According to informed sources, at least six prosecutors have resigned from the Minnesota U.S. Attorney's Office due to dissatisfaction with the Trump administration's handling of the federal investigation into the killing of a woman by an agent from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). One source indicated that a primary concern among the departing prosecutors was pressure they faced to investigate the deceased's wife. An ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good during an operation in Minneapolis last week.

The departures include the office's former Acting U.S. Attorney, Joe Thompson, who had led a wide-ranging benefits fraud investigation that resulted in convictions for approximately 60 defendants, most of whom were of Somali descent.

Thompson was temporarily appointed by President Trump in the spring of 2025 as Minnesota's top federal prosecutor and served until his successor, Daniel Rosen, took over in October 2025.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described Thompson as a "principled public servant" and stated that his decision to leave was a "tremendous loss." According to a person familiar with the matter, an Assistant U.S. Attorney who served as Thompson's deputy on the fraud investigation is also among the prosecutors who have resigned.
