GMC Sierra 1500 Pickup for 2027 Unveiled by General Motors with New V8 Engine and Comprehensive Redesign

Deep News00:20

General Motors has officially launched the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup, offering a new V8 engine option and featuring a complete redesign of both its interior and exterior.

The automaker has streamlined the new Sierra's model lineup, retaining only six core trims: Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and the top-tier Denali Ultimate.

This announcement comes just one week after the Detroit-based company revealed the refreshed Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which shares the same platform.

The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 represents a full redesign, incorporating a new V8 powertrain and significant updates to its styling and cabin.

General Motors has identified this new pickup as a crucial pillar for its sales and profitability, noting that the high-margin Denali and AT4 series together account for roughly half of the current model's sales. These trims feature exclusive parts, custom accessories, and premium comfort features, which help elevate the brand's transaction prices and profit margins.

In revamping the Sierra lineup, General Motors has eliminated the SLE and SLT mid-level trims, which currently have starting prices around $51,500 and $57,900, respectively. The company stated that specific pricing and detailed performance specifications for the new models will be announced closer to their launch later this year. The current Sierra 1500 range starts at approximately $41,000 for the Pro base model and exceeds $86,000 for the Denali Ultimate.

Michael McPhee, Vice President of GMC and Buick, commented in the official release, "The next-generation Sierra 1500 delivers a new generation of small-block V8 power, formidable and precise off-road capability, and our most immersive cabin experience to date. This new pickup will set the benchmark for the industry."

While sharing its technical architecture with the recently updated Chevrolet Silverado, the GMC version features distinct exterior styling. Its design cues are inspired by the brand's all-electric Sierra EV, and the interior adopts a new layout.

Significant improvements have been made to interior storage, including a sliding center console and a fold-out in-vehicle work surface. These enhancements were achieved by relocating the gear shifter from the center console to a steering-column-mounted position. The truck also debuts new technology features, with an available curved display spanning over 60 inches, which includes an 11.5-inch front passenger screen dedicated to entertainment.

Under the hood, the 2027 Sierra receives a major upgrade, mirroring the Silverado by offering General Motors' new generation of small-block V8 gasoline engines in 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter displacements.

In addition to the V8 options, the new truck will be available with two V6 engine choices, including a brand-exclusive diesel variant.

Separately, Cox Automotive forecasted on Wednesday that General Motors' U.S. sales for the first half of this year could decline by approximately 7%, against an expected overall market decline of 3%.

In the first quarter, General Motors' sales fell 9.7% year-over-year. GMC brand sales remained largely flat, with Sierra 1500 sales dipping slightly by 2% to nearly 51,900 units. Sales of heavy-duty pickup models dropped about 8% to around 24,500 units, while sales of the all-electric Sierra EV saw a modest 3% increase, though total volume remained below 1,300 units.
