A traveler recently took to social media to report an alarming incident at a JI Hotel branch in Guangzhou. Upon returning to the hotel in the early hours, they were shocked to discover their room door wide open, later confirming via surveillance footage that a housekeeper had forgotten to close it after cleaning.
The door remained ajar from roughly 4 p.m. that afternoon until just after midnight the next day, leaving the room exposed for more than eight hours. On the evening of August 17, the guest, Mr. Wang, recounted that he had left the room around 11 a.m. on August 14 for work. When he returned at approximately 12:35 a.m. on August 15, he was stunned. “As soon as the elevator doors opened, I saw my room door open. I could hardly believe it,” he said.
When Mr. Wang contacted the front desk, a staff member explained that the door had been deliberately opened for ventilation due to the humid weather in Guangzhou. Skeptical of this reasoning, Mr. Wang asked to speak with a manager, but was told the manager had already left for the day and that they would need to check on the matter. Unsatisfied with the response, he decided to call the police.
After police arrived, a review of the hotel’s surveillance footage revealed that the housekeeper had left in a hurry following the cleaning and had failed to close the door. From 4 p.m. on August 14 until Mr. Wang’s return in the early hours of August 15, the door had been open for over eight hours. Accompanied by police, Mr. Wang then inspected the room and found that his belongings, valued at nearly 200,000 yuan in total, were fortunately all intact.
“I believe the hotel’s management is highly unprofessional,” Mr. Wang said. He emphasized that he does not seek any compensation but hopes the hotel will take his complaint seriously and address the underlying issues. In a response on the morning of August 18, staff at the involved branch stated that upon receiving the guest’s feedback, they immediately went to the scene and accompanied him to file a police report. Police later confirmed through surveillance that no one had entered the room during the period, and nothing was missing. The hotel has also taken disciplinary action against the responsible employee and launched a special service safety inspection and rectification at the branch.
