Trump's Action-Packed 24 Hours: Fuel Talks, Renaming a Lake, and Iran Tensions | Key Moves on August 27

Deep News18:23

Former President Donald Trump's schedule over the past day has been packed with significant political and business developments, ranging from domestic economic initiatives to international diplomatic maneuvers.

Trump is reportedly planning to meet with US oil refiners and fuel retailers next week, according to sources familiar with the matter. The White House meeting is expected to focus on strategies aimed at reducing gasoline prices for American consumers.

In a notable symbolic gesture, Trump signed an executive order on Thursday officially renaming Canada's Lake Ontario to "Lake America." This move represents his latest action against Canada amid the escalating trade dispute between the two nations. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump remarked, "I've been thinking about the name 'Lake America' for a long time. We have a gulf — and now we have a lake. All we need next is an ocean."

Trump also took to social media to praise NVIDIA (NVDA.O) for its strong earnings performance and the company's projected revenue growth for fiscal year 2028. Additionally, he lauded Micron Technology (MU.O), referring to the chipmaker as one of the "hottest" companies globally.

On the personnel front, Trump announced via social media on August 27 that Ben Moss will assume the role of presidential assistant and White House staff secretary starting September 2. Moss will succeed Will Scharf, who has transitioned to the position of White House counsel.

Regarding Iran, Trump claimed that Tehran is eager to negotiate with Washington, pushing back against what he described as inaccurate media reporting. He stated, "Fox News' Jonathan Hunt did a particularly inaccurate report on the 'faltering Islamic Republic of Iran.' I don't want to meet with them, but they want to meet with me. In fact, they are begging for a deal."

On the business front, AAFS Infrastructure & Energy, a company affiliated with Trump, is planning to expand new projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina, increasing its investment footprint in the country to over 2 billion euros.

The Trump administration is considering raising biofuel quotas for 2027 by approximately 500 million gallons, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter. This potential increase is intended to offset an anticipated larger-than-expected issuance of small refinery exemptions.

Iran has denied allegations of plotting to assassinate Trump's youngest son. In an interview aired by Lebanon's Al Manar TV on the evening of August 27, Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Rezaei dismissed reports suggesting Iran intended to target Barron Trump, calling them "lies."

According to the Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources, the Trump administration has repeatedly signaled to mediators that it has no intention of returning to the terms of the memorandum of understanding reached with Iran in June of this year.

On security matters, Trump expressed complete confidence regarding potential Russian military provocations against NATO countries. Speaking via Axios, the former president said he is "not worried at all" about such prospects, adding "no problem there."

Finally, citing two US officials, Axios reported that the Trump administration is negotiating with Venezuela's interim government to acquire ownership stakes in select oil fields. The potential deal would cover more than a dozen fields with productive capacity, rather than Venezuela's entire proven reserve base of approximately 300 billion barrels of oil.
