The Defense Department's top technology officer, Emil Michael, has voiced concerns over recent security lapses involving major artificial intelligence players, suggesting the industry is not allocating enough resources to protect its systems.
In an interview, Michael pointed to vulnerabilities linked to OpenAI and Hugging Face, calling them "worrying" and adding that they indicate a clear lack of adequate investment in security measures. He emphasized that AI developers must train their models to avoid engaging in illegal or destructive activities.
"This is fundamentally an engineering, research, and investment challenge," Michael said. "I'm not sure what kind of regulation could effectively prevent such issues from arising."
