Qingdao's Universities Release Freshman Stats: A Wave of "Zihan" Students and Top Surnames Revealed

As the new academic year kicks off, universities across Qingdao are welcoming a fresh batch of students, and their recently released enrollment data is packed with intriguing insights. Among the highlights are the dominance of students born in 2008 and the emergence of "Wang" as the most common surname among newcomers. These statistics paint a vivid picture of the new faces arriving on campus, marking the start of an exciting new semester.



China University of Petroleum (East China) Welcomes a 2008-Born Majority

The China University of Petroleum (East China) has enrolled 5,146 undergraduate students this year, with the top six majors by enrollment being Petroleum Engineering (352 students), Mechanical Engineering (331), Materials Science (327), Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering (282), Software Engineering (240), and Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation (180). The colleges with the highest number of male students are the Department of Physical Education, the School of Petroleum Engineering, and the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, while the female-dominated colleges include the School of Humanities and Law, the School of Foreign Languages, and the School of Economics and Management. Students hail from all 34 provincial-level regions across China, with Shandong contributing the most at 1,364 students, followed by Henan (365), Xinjiang (350), Hebei (334), Anhui (229), and Sichuan (209). The top five high schools for undergraduate admissions are Shandong Experimental High School, Licheng No. 2 High School, Qingdao West Coast New Area No. 1 High School, Dongying Shengli No. 1 High School, and Heze No. 1 High School. Notably, students born in 2008 form the largest cohort at 3,084 individuals, and among the newcomers, four share the name Li Xiang, while another four are named Wang Pengxiang.



Qingdao University of Technology's 2026 Class Includes 40 Students Named "Zihan"

The Qingdao University of Technology has welcomed a total of 10,626 new students for the 2026 academic year, including 8,949 undergraduates. Among these, 4,654 undergraduates are at the Huangdao Campus, alongside 1,340 master's students and 130 doctoral students; 888 undergraduates and 207 graduate students are at the Shibei Campus; and 3,407 undergraduates are at the Linyi Campus. Shandong Province leads in enrollment with 6,525 students, followed by Hebei (218) and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (144). High schools such as Liaocheng No. 1 High School, Heze No. 1 High School, Jiaxiang No. 1 High School, Tengzhou No. 1 High School East Campus, Cao County No. 1 High School, Linyi No. 4 High School, Linyi No. 1 High School North Campus, Yuncheng No. 1 High School, Rizhao No. 1 High School, and Xiajin No. 1 High School each have over 50 students enrolled. The surname Wang tops the list with 971 students, followed by Zhang (927), Li (904), and Liu (729). Interestingly, seven new students share the full name Zhang Zihan, six are named Wang Chenyu, and five each are called Li Ao and Liu Sitong. A staggering 40 students are named Zihan, 30 are Haoran, 29 are Haoyu, 22 are Yinuo, and 21 each are named Jiaqi, Junjie, and Wenbo.



Qingdao Agricultural University Sees "Wang" as the Most Common Surname

Qingdao Agricultural University has enrolled 7,675 undergraduate students this year, comprising 3,380 males and 4,295 females for a gender ratio of 1:1.27. The College of Science and Information has the highest male enrollment, while the College of Economics and Management leads in female enrollment. The top five majors by recruitment are Animal Science (236 students), Electronic Information Engineering (210), Veterinary Medicine (210), Computer Science and Technology (210), and Civil Engineering (180). The largest number of freshmen come from Liaocheng No. 1 High School (77), followed by Jiaxiang No. 1 High School (69), Laiwu No. 1 High School (60), Ju County No. 2 High School (51), and Heze No. 1 High School (46). Born in 2008, the incoming class is overwhelmingly led by 4,184 students. The oldest student was born on May 10, 2000, 26 students celebrate their birthdays on National Day (October 1), and 36 students mark their special day on the university's anniversary, October 6. The surname Wang is again the most prevalent with 838 students, followed by Zhang (677), Li (644), Liu (547), Sun (248), Yang (208), Zhao (196), Chen (191), Xu (145), and Gao (121). Eight new students share the name Wang Zihan, seven are named Wang Yinuo, six are Wang Zihan, and five are Wang Rui.
