On August 1st, the first Hualong One nuclear power project in Hainan Province, the Phase II project of the Huaneng Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant, successfully connected its Unit 3 to the grid for power generation. This milestone signifies that the unit has officially gained the capability to deliver electricity to the grid, marking a critical step towards its commercial operation target.
The project is planned to feature two 1,200-megawatt nuclear power units. It utilizes the Hualong One third-generation pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology, which holds independent intellectual property rights. The project is strongly promoting the independent design of the nuclear power system and the domestic manufacturing of its equipment. By adopting a safety design concept that integrates both active and passive systems, it can significantly enhance the reliability and safety of the nuclear power plant.
Once the project is fully completed, it is expected to generate up to 18 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This will save more than 6.32 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 11.6 million tons each year. The project will provide clean, safe, and efficient energy support for the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port and contribute to the achievement of China's dual carbon goals.
