During the extended 2026 Spring Festival holiday, Taian radiated vitality and bustling energy. From dense passenger flows at high-speed rail stations and expressways to vigorous commercial activity in urban and rural areas, and booming tourist traffic at cultural and tourism sites, a series of dynamic data points highlighted the robust vitality of Taian's holiday market, sketching a new panorama of the city's thriving economic development.
Passenger flow—the visible sign of livelihood and activity—serves as a core driver stimulating business, activating tourism, and empowering the economy. Shifts in Spring Festival travel habits have injected strong market dynamism into Taian, a well-known tourism city. According to Taian Transportation Bureau statistics, in the first four days of the holiday, exits from 40 expressway toll stations recorded 717,000 vehicles with seven seats or fewer entering Taian, a year-on-year increase of 9.66%.
Taian Railway Station also reported impressive numbers. Staff noted that on the first day of the Lunar New Year, February 17, the station dispatched over 8,000 passengers—an increase of more than 3,000 compared to the same day the previous year—with 81 train trips, 14 more than last year, including new services to popular destinations like Xiamen and Weihai.
The traditional notion of “returning home for the New Year, regardless of wealth” is quietly evolving among younger generations. The nine-day “super-long Spring Festival holiday” in 2026, combined with free expressway travel policies, made self-driving tours a popular choice. Mr. Guo from Henan visited Taian with his family on New Year’s Eve to climb Mount Tai. “Taking advantage of the long holiday, we traveled together to experience Taian’s natural scenery and local culture. As long as the family is together, anywhere can be New Year’s,” he said.
While the forms of reunion are changing, the essence of family bonds remains. “With more people choosing self-driving trips this year, we implemented scientific traffic control, with coordinated efforts from transport, traffic police, and expressway management personnel to guide vehicle flow, temporarily opening emergency lanes during peak hours or sudden congestion,” explained a Taian Transportation Bureau staff member.
To alleviate parking challenges, Taishan District has offered shared parking at government institutions during holidays for three consecutive years, providing 726 free parking spaces. These lots are strategically located, allowing tourists to walk easily to nearby attractions and commercial areas. Citywide measures also included opening many institutional parking areas to tourists, setting up temporary roadside parking, and integrating 74,000 parking spots into the “Taishan Easy Parking” mini-program, with over 15,000 shared spaces around Mount Tai Scenic Area.
The shift from “returning home” to “diverse travel,” coupled with continuous expressway network improvements and open public facilities, reflects both the refinement of Taian’s integrated transport system and the warmth of its urban governance. The surging passenger flow has become a vital engine for high-quality economic growth at the start of the year.
Where people gather, commerce thrives. The dense travel flow directly boosted the consumer market during the Spring Festival holiday. Taian organized 11 major promotional events, such as “Lucky Horse Welcomes the New Year—Family Stocking Up” and “Daizong Greets the New Year—Happy Shopping,” covering business complexes,特色街区, cultural-tourism sites, and rural markets, sustaining a wave of consumer enthusiasm.
From the first to the eighth day of the lunar year, room occupancy rates remained at 100% at Taian Xiangshe·Shanshuijian Homestay in Taishan District’s Taiqian Subdistrict. Thanks to its prime location, thoughtful service, and comfortable environment, it became a preferred choice for many mountain climbers. “This year, we noticed a clear rise in self-driving tourists, with a wider geographical reach—the farthest visitors came from Heilongjiang,” said Yao Meng, the homestay’s manager. He added that the extended holiday and warmer weather made family trips the norm, with stays typically lasting two to three days.
Amid strong demand, improved cultural and tourism facilities around Shanshuijian enhanced the homestay’s appeal. “Nearby Baimashi Village launched a multi-format combination of ‘intangible cultural heritage lanterns + rural markets + snow play parks,’ effectively extending visitors’ stay. Many guests visited, improving the overall experience,” Yao noted.
As one of Taian’s upscale hotels, Taian Dongzun Huameida Plaza Hotel explored a deep integration of “hotel + cultural tourism” during the holiday. With the theme “Mount Tai Blessings·Dongzun’s Steeds,” the hotel blended Mount Tai culture into its offerings, turning a hotel stay into part of the “Mount Tai experience.” “By incorporating folk activities like lion dances, rubbing prints, and God of Wealth parades, we created an immersive New Year atmosphere for guests,” said Zhao Yingying, the hotel’s revenue manager. During the holiday, the hotel hosted over 5,000 guests, generating revenue exceeding 1.1 million yuan.
Holiday office data showed that from the evening of February 14 to February 22, 2026, 11 monitored tourist accommodation facilities in Taian received 17,600 visitors, a 34.63% year-on-year increase, with revenue of 8.4394 million yuan, up 28.33%. Taian’s hospitality industry is rapidly transitioning from merely providing lodging to serving as a comprehensive cultural-tourism experience carrier.
The catering market was equally lively. New Year’s Eve dinner tables were fully booked, queues formed outside restaurant chains, and some establishments achieved a table turnover rate as high as 471%. Data from the Municipal Commerce Bureau indicated that 20 monitored retail enterprises achieved sales of 151 million yuan, up 19.51% year-on-year. Taian Wanda Plaza saw a 6.7% increase in footfall and a 15.5% rise in sales during the holiday.
The performance boost stemmed partly from sustained release of consumers’ “one-stop” shopping demand. As an integrated commercial complex, Taian Wanda Plaza aligned perfectly with this trend, offering not only dining and shopping but also diverse leisure options like cinemas and亲子互动. Additionally, the longer holiday extended the stay of returning residents,集中迸发 family gatherings and offline social needs, while the growing number of tourists injected strong vitality into the mall’s consumer market.
Taishan Wuyue Plaza also delivered a satisfactory performance during the holiday. By focusing on immersive消费活动, the mall created diverse new消费场景, effectively attracting young customers. Experiential消费 featuring cultural elements like “intangible cultural heritage” and “国潮” were particularly popular. Data showed that footfall lasting one to two hours in the Taishan Wuyue business circle increased by 0.8% year-on-year, while group purchase orders for experiences like glassblowing, pottery making, and iron flower displays rose by 114% to 270% month-on-month.
A representative from Taishan Wuyue Plaza noted that the mall also attracted long-distance tourists during the holiday. Today’s consumers are no longer satisfied with单纯购物; they are more willing to spend for “a meaningful experience.”
The良性联动 of commercial flow, passenger flow, and tourist flow effectively drives economic growth. During the longest Spring Festival holiday on record, Taian’s cultural tourism market saw significant热度高涨. Statistics showed that from February 15 to February 23, 25 monitored tourist attractions—including A-grade scenic spots, new-format tourism sites, rural tourism areas, and red tourism spots—received 3.0958 million visits, a 19.18% year-on-year increase.
Among them, Mount Tai Scenic Area welcomed 481,000 visitors during the same period, up 36.18% year-on-year, setting a record for statutory holidays. Behind these impressive figures lies Taian’s upgrade in cultural tourism supply, centered on “format integration + immersive experience.” The city策划推出 81 cultural tourism activities and preferential policies, covering five themes—欣赏泰安好风景, listening to Mount Tai’s voice, savoring local delicacies, chasing trendy玩法, and experiencing Qilu’s ancient charm—as well as three categories: scenic spot discounts, accommodation benefits, and travel福利. These efforts spurred diversified tourism growth across the region.
Wanglinpo Village’s Mount Tai炊烟巷 in Qiujiadian Town, Taishan District, became a网红打卡地 with its authentic rural scenes, receiving over 80,000 visitors during the holiday. What transformed this once-overlooked village into a hotspot? “We avoided uniform ancient streets and instead restored genuine rural life,” said Wang Hongjun, the village’s Party secretary. Mount Tai炊烟巷 features 17 formats, including old-fashioned steamed bun workshops and handmade noodle shops, using traditional tools and ingredients to recreate a 1980s central Shandong countryside atmosphere, evoking nostalgia in every corner.
Additionally, the village introduced traditional cultural experiences like Mount Tai incense burning and plant dyeing, effectively meeting urban residents’ desire to experience traditional rural life. “The continuous visitor flow brought economic growth. During the holiday, Mount Tai炊烟巷’s comprehensive income reached 278,000 yuan. The most popular snack shop, for example, saw daily revenue exceed 5,000 yuan,” Wang Hongjun said happily.
Across the city, new cultural tourism scenes emerged: Hongmen Kaoshan Garden’s “Rural Good Times·Art in the Countryside” event featured fish lantern parades, face-changing performances, ancient costume dance parties, and bonfire nights, offering “folk customs by day,狂欢 by night.” Daibei Cultural Plaza dazzled with lantern displays and wall light shows, blending ancient and modern visuals. Dongping County’s New Great Song Dynasty不夜城, themed “Be a Song ‘Trendsetter,’ Celebrate a Song ‘Trendy’ Year,” built a “1+4+N” performance matrix, with实景演出 like “A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains” boosting night消费. “Climb Mount Tai by day, explore the不夜城 by night” became a popular New Year activity.
From traditional villages to immersive streets, cultural venues to scenic landscapes, Taian is converting “流量” into “留量” through rich product offerings, deep experiential design, and sincere service guarantees, continuously enhancing the city’s cultural tourism appeal.
Diverse cultural tourism scenes not only highlight Taian’s attractiveness but also raise a key question: How can Taian leverage the “Mount Tai+” strategy to turn holiday traffic into long-term economic growth for the city? “Holiday流量 only becomes true economic增量 when it transforms into sustained消费力,” noted Liu Yang, associate professor and deputy director of the Social Education Department at the Municipal Party School. He suggested linking消费链条 through “ticket stub economy.” “In 2026, ‘ticket stub economy’ was首次写入 the provincial government work report. Taian can use high-speed rail ticket linkages to convert transport客流 into文旅消费, shifting from ticket economy to industry economy,” Liu said.
He emphasized that culture, as the soul and core competitiveness of tourism, can turn trips from superficial tours into deep experiences, extending industrial chains, creating jobs, and stimulating consumption, ultimately boosting the local economy. He recommended transforming intangible cultural heritage like Mount Tai shadow puppetry into experiential cultural products, using culture to create immersive scenes that make visitors “come for the mountain, stay for the city.”
To achieve “unwilling to leave when here, eager to return after leaving,” Taian must strengthen its internal capabilities. Zhang Ruoyang, professor at Taishan University and young expert under the Shandong Taishan Scholars Program, proposed continuously upgrading hardware around scenic spots—such as transport links, restrooms,休息设施, and urban environment—while refining soft services like smart guides, emergency response, and complaint handling to enhance visitor loyalty with warm service.
Technology empowerment is becoming a new engine for high-quality supply. Taishan Cultural Tourism Group has launched an AI-based “smart travel companion” service, enabling over 40 historical figures, including Confucius and Shi Ganjun, to “speak,” integrating culture and technology deeply. Zhang Ruoyang suggested that future efforts should focus on emerging needs like cultural exploration, wellness stays, and deep experiences, continually enriching the cultural tourism product system centered on Mount Tai culture. When products are high-quality, diverse, and attractive, visitors will naturally open their wallets.
Globally, Taian needs to expand inbound tourism. Zhang noted that measures introduced in 2025 to promote inbound tourism have shown initial results in areas like signage, payment convenience, and foreign language services, leading to significant growth in international visitors. However, compared to benchmark cities like Zhangjiajie and Guilin, gaps remain. Zhang recommended learning from Chongqing’s “internet celebrity marketing,” Guilin’s “landscape + folklore,” and Zhangjiajie’s targeted overseas promotions. Customized routes for key markets like Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, along with全面提升国际化接待能力—including multilingual services, smooth foreign card payments, and internationally recognized signage—can ensure international tourists “can enter, stay, and spend.”
The Spring Festival surge is not an endpoint but a new starting point. Zhang Ruoyang stated that as流量 continues to pour in, only by delivering quality service, offering rich cultural tourism products, and expanding international perspectives can Taian truly transition from a “major tourism city” to a “tourism powerhouse,” transforming the auspicious meaning of “Climb Mount Tai, Ensure Peace” into a vivid practice of high-quality development.
