Yunnan Germanium Wins 1.3 Billion Yuan Indium Phosphide Long-Term Order as AI Optical Communications Drive High-End Material Volume Growth

Deep News17:50

On the evening of November 3, Yunnan Lincang Xinyuan Germanium Industry Co.,Ltd. (ASX: 002428) issued an announcement that its controlling subsidiary Yunnan Xinyao signed a long-term supply agreement with US optical communications company Applied Optoelectronics AOI.

From 2027 to 2031, AOI is expected to purchase 180,000 4-inch N-type indium phosphide substrates per year, totaling 900,000 units over five years. The 2027 contract amount of approximately 1.305 billion yuan is equivalent to 122.46% of Yunnan Germanium's total operating revenue in 2025.

For a materials company with 2025 revenue of only 1.066 billion yuan, this is not ordinary order growth. More notably, the previously limited compound semiconductor business is beginning to directly absorb large-scale procurement demand from overseas high-speed optical communications manufacturers. Behind this change is the fact that AI infrastructure construction is redistributing value across the optical communications industry chain.

From Material Price Increases to High-End Product Volume Growth

Yunnan Germanium's past revenue mainly came from material-grade germanium, photovoltaic-grade germanium, fiber-optic-grade germanium, and infrared-grade germanium products. The compound semiconductor materials business, which includes indium phosphide and gallium arsenide, generated only 138 million yuan in 2025, accounting for 12.93% of annual revenue.

But by 2026, the driving force behind business growth had already changed. The company's third-quarter report showed that revenue for the first three quarters reached 1.364 billion yuan, up 70.71% year-on-year, while net profit attributable to shareholders reached 176 million yuan, up 869.79% year-on-year. Third-quarter revenue alone was 632 million yuan, up 134.61% year-on-year.

The company attributed the improvement to multiple factors, including AI data centers and optical communications demand driving higher indium phosphide sales volume, higher average selling prices for indium phosphide, and improved gross margins for compound semiconductor materials.

This means the newly signed order is not built entirely on future demand forecasts. Downstream demand expansion has already begun to show up in sales volume, product pricing, and the income statement.

This point is especially important. For semiconductor materials companies, the early stage of a market boom often manifests as price increases, but if subsequent orders can continue to scale, the growth logic may shift from a price cycle to capacity expansion and product mix upgrading.

Indium phosphide is an important substrate material for manufacturing optical communications lasers and detectors. High-speed optical modules need to complete the conversion between electrical and optical signals at higher transmission rates, and high-quality indium phosphide substrates suitable for related optoelectronic devices are one of the key upstream materials.

As 800G optical modules accelerate deployment and even higher-speed products move toward industrialization, market demand is no longer limited to whether materials can be obtained, but is gradually shifting to whether high-specification substrates meeting size, defect control, and batch consistency requirements can be stably obtained.

The 4-inch product long-term order obtained by Yunnan Xinyao this time precisely reflects this change.

Customer Locks in Supply Five Years Ahead

The other side of this contract is equally worth studying. AOI's second-quarter 2026 performance materials filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission showed quarterly revenue of 192 million US dollars, the fifth consecutive quarter of record revenue, with 800G product shipments more than doubling quarter-on-quarter.

AOI at the time expected that demand for its high-speed optical communications products could continue to exceed production capacity until mid-2027. Capacity pressure among downstream equipment manufacturers is being transmitted upward to upstream material procurement.

Particularly noteworthy is that AOI did not lock in supply for just one quarter or one year, but arranged expected procurement scale five years in advance. This indicates that in its capacity planning, continuous supply of key substrate materials has become a variable that needs to be managed ahead of time.

Based on the 2027 contract amount of 194 million US dollars and the quantity of 180,000 units, the average price per unit is 1,080 US dollars. However, this cannot be taken as proof that Yunnan Xinyao obtained a large premium. The announcement did not disclose corresponding yield rates, manufacturing costs, or comparable prices for products of the same specification, and the unit price alone is insufficient to prove excess profit.

What truly has research value is the customer's willingness to establish certainty for upstream supply through a long-term agreement. For indium phosphide suppliers, this may improve the visibility of future expansion plans and also help strengthen customer certification, process collaboration, and long-term supply relationships. If products can be delivered stably, the supplier's position in the customer's procurement system is expected to rise further.

Orders May Drive Capacity Structure Reorganization

A noteworthy contrast is that Yunnan Germanium's previous indium phosphide business was not large in scale. The company disclosed that as of the end of 2025, annual indium phosphide chip capacity was 150,000 units, covering 2-inch to 4-inch products, with actual output that year of 100,100 units. Planned output for 2026 is 180,000 units, covering 2-inch to 6-inch products.

Yet the procurement plan of this single overseas customer for 2027 alone reaches 180,000 units, all of which are 4-inch products. This shows a significant gap between the company's existing capacity and the new demand.

But this gap is also precisely why expansion has a commercial basis. In April 2026, Yunnan Xinyao already launched a high-quality indium phosphide single-chip project, planning to invest 189 million yuan and add 300,000 units per year of equivalent 4-inch capacity. After completion, total capacity will reach 450,000 units, with a construction period of 18 months.

The expansion plan preceded disclosure of this long-term order, indicating that the company had already made investment arrangements based on market demand. The new contract further provides a clear customer demand basis for future capacity.

According to the plan, after the project is completed, AOI's expected annual procurement volume of 180,000 units would equal 40.00% of total designed annual capacity. For upstream material companies, this linkage between customer procurement and expansion planning is more important than simply increasing production scale.

However, nominal production line capacity does not equal effective delivery capability. Production configuration for products of different sizes, customer certification progress, and finished product yield rates will still determine actual sellable output. The project's originally planned 18-month construction period also means that 2027 contract deliveries may proceed in parallel with the ramp-up of the new production line.

The Ultimate Value of the Order Depends on Upgrading the Profit Model

Yunnan Germanium's compound semiconductor materials business had a gross margin of 23.33% in 2025, while the expansion project previously disclosed by the company had a calculated internal rate of return of 49.51%. The latter is a forecast based on project assumptions, not a realized operating return. The two indicators have different bases and cannot be directly compared.

But together the two sets of data point to one research focus. Whether Yunnan Germanium can use the volume growth of larger-size and higher-specification products to improve an operating structure in which the materials business previously had limited revenue scale and profitability was affected by price cycles.

In the first three quarters of 2026, the company's compound semiconductor business has already shown positive changes of rising volume and price alongside improved gross margin. If this trend continues, indium phosphide is expected to develop from an auxiliary revenue source into an important profit-contributing segment.

At the same time, the company still needs to obtain and maintain relevant dual-use item export licenses. The 2027 contract amount will depend on approved quantities, purchase orders, and actual performance, and cannot be fully recognized as revenue in advance.

Another factor easily overlooked is that Yunnan Germanium holds a 55.83% equity stake in Yunnan Xinyao. Operating revenue contributed by a subsidiary is not equal to net profit ultimately attributable to shareholders of the listed company. Therefore, the actual value of this order needs to be assessed by looking simultaneously at effective delivery scale, product gross margin, and attributable profit contribution.

Yunnan Germanium's past business advantages were more reflected in germanium resources and material processing capabilities, while AI optical communications demand is pushing it into a semiconductor materials market with higher technical specifications and deeper customer cooperation.
