Czech PM Indicates NATO Defense Spending Target May Not Be Met This Year

Deep News05-31

The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic stated in an interview published on Sunday that the country will most likely fail to meet the NATO target of increasing defense spending to 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year.

The Czech Prime Minister noted that the government will "do its utmost" to fulfill its commitment. However, the current administration is facing a budget shortfall due to excessive spending by the previous government.

There is a disagreement between the Czech President and the Prime Minister regarding plans to cut defense spending in the 2026 budget.

The Prime Minister told the media that the country is committed to reaching NATO's new target of 3.5% of GDP by 2035. However, he believes that NATO allies should focus more on enhancing actual military capabilities rather than merely pursuing spending figures that can be easily manipulated.
